I am also interested in the history of Hill House. It is named on the death certificate of my husband's 3 x great grandfather who lived and had worked in Folkestone at the harbour. I am wondering how he ended up in Lyminge when the Royal Victoria Hospital was nearer to home. I would be grateful for any information on Hill House including the location in Lyminge.

I would also be grateful for any information on Hill House. My Great Grandmother died there in 1934 and I can not find out why she was there

I have found out that Hill House was the name given to the Elham Union Workhouse. The workhouse site became the Elham Poor Law Institution, and was also known as Hill House. Under the NHS it became St Mary's hospital and provided geratric care. Can anyone add to this?

With thanks to Derek Boughton of the Lyminge Historical Society:

Hill House was the Sanatorium attached to the what became the hospital in Westfield Lane at Etchinghill, a lot of births took place there. You should be aware that the sanatorium was originally part of the local workhouse and therefore, it may be possible that the mother was an inmate of the workhouse at the time of the birth. The workhouse formed part of the Union whose registration district was know a Elham District. As can be verified on an Ordnance Survey map, Etchinghill is a village some 4 - 5 miles south of Elham and forms part of Lyminge Parish not Elham Parish.

Many thanks for the information. Do you know if an admission and discharge record is available and if so where are they kept?
