September 1999
Lyminge Association News
1. The Next Committee Meeting of the Lyminge Association
.....is on Monday 6 September at Everist Court, Station Road (not as given
last month - sorry!).
2. The Annual General Meeting - Wednesday 29 September at the
Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm.
The Speaker at the Annual General Meeting will be Peter Eustace, the Site
Co-ordinator of Sibton Park Development (Holiday Property Bond Management
Ltd), whose talk will be illustrated by slides. HPB started to convert the
house into 13 apartments create 28 cottages in the ground at the end of
last October and Bondholders should be able to start holidaying at Sibton
Park in January 2000. Leisure facilities planned on the site include the
existing swimming pool, tennis courts, a grass bowling green and a pitch
and putt course. This will be your opportunity to gain advance information
and to quiz Mr. Eustace on any points of concern. Refreshments will be
served. .). There will only be a short amount of business before the talk.
3. Bulb Planting
The Lyminge Association is masterminding a bulb-planting day on Saturday
11 September. If we plant bulbs then, they will flower for the first time
in the Millennium year! We would be delighted to receive donations of
bulbs. Please meet at Yew Tree Cross (the Elham end of the village) at
10.00am. Please give Debbie Marsh (863192) or Liz Coleman (863197) a ring
if you can help.
The Bus Service - a Note from the Editor
During July I wrote a letter to the Operations Manager of Stage Coach
because a number of our Senior Citizens had informed me that the number 17
bus sometimes did not stop at the Post Office stop when prospective
passengers were waiting within the bus shelter. We felt that the bus
drivers should be aware that some passengers are not so nimble on their
feet these days and cannot shot out as soon as a bus appears around the
corner. The letter from Mr. D. Roles said that he would alert the drivers
and ask them to be more vigilant in future. Mr Roles also says that if
there are any future occurrences that we should let him know, including as
much details as possible, so that he can track the driver and take the
necessary action - so you know what to do!! Write to Mr. Roles at the Bus
Station, Bouverie Square, Folkestone, Kent, CT20 1BA.
Parish Council News
The Parish Council is currently investigating suitable litter bins for
the path alongside Tayne Field in order to replace the bins kindly donated
by a parishioner and which are now decaying. Mr. (Chad) Chadwick kindly
empties them (voluntarily) once a week on bin day and the Parish Council
is very grateful to him for doing this. Chad and people living nearby are
disappointed that the bins are used for household refuse (including
chicken carcasses!). Please use them for the purpose intended! The Parish
Council also hopes to install a dedicated dog "refuse" bin, but
is currently negotiating for the Council Dog Warden to empty it.
Congratulations to the Traders in Lyminge whose floral
displays have been wonderful this year - they really help beautify our
"Best Kent Village". The display at the Coach and Horses in
particular is a credit to Sarah and Andy. Thank you everyone!
Dogs
Two notes have been sent to the Editor this month about dogs - or
rather, their owners. It would be nice if the perpetrators read this
Newsletter and took note! If you do not want to accost a wayward dog
owner, but can identify them, please inform our local Special Constable -
owners who allow their dogs to foul the footpaths may be liable to a
substantial fine.
1. "Please mention that people are still letting their dogs
........ on the pathway from Silverlands to Brandy Road". This is a
notorious "black spot" - Ed.
2. "For the first time in twenty five years, I am writing to
complain about dog owners in Etchinghill. I have always been a dog owner,
but never have my dogs been allowed to foul the village. Newcomers to the
village evidently do not have my high standards of hygiene. There are
footpaths and Downland all around the village. Do as we do, if you have a
car, and take the dog to those dog-friendly zones, especially if he is old
and can't walk long distances. Do not use the footpath which runs from the
chapel to the crossroads; children run there.
"One man with an old dog allowed it to leave a large deposit at the
bus stop the other day. He watched the dog perform and left it there.
Another lady allowed her dog to do the same on the grass verge at the
cross roads. Please Madam, walk up the hill to the Downs. If your dog
can't be car-lifted to dog-friendly area, please carry bags in your pocket
and CLEAR IT UP.
"Today I cleared a large deposit from the footpath the other side of
the road from my home - not because I wanted to, but because the elderly
and children use that footpath to and from the bus stop - and I'm a 64
year old arthritic. Please, Each End Hill-ites, speak to those who are
intent on spoiling our village, and shame them into clearing their mess
up.
Joanne I. Ralph (Mrs.)
P.S. Could we have some notices and red bins? We've never needed them
before, but obviously do now."
Planning Application, Skeete Road
The following letter has been received from "Concerned
Locals": "Most readers will have approached Lyminge at some time
via Brady Road, coming down from Farthing Common, and could not have
failed to observe the beautiful view across the valley to the left,
looking across what is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Imagine
looking across the same scene and seeing twelve caravans, twelve tents,
twenty four cars, two additional residential properties, a toilet block
and numerous people. This could be the scene if the development being
planned by the occupants of Little Valley Cottage, Skeete Road under
planning application 99/0673/SH gains approval. In the interest of
preserving our beautiful valley we would strongly urge readers to voice
their objections to the Planning department of Shepway District Council
before 3rd September and to their local councillor as soon as
possible."

Thoroughly Lyminge
The boxes for the contributions to a trust fund to help the young staff
members replace their tools lost in the fire at Thoroughly Wood were
opened at the end of August and their contents counted. Already there is
the magnificent sum of £166.00! Thank you to everyone who has put money
in one of the boxes so far. The tools which it is hoped to replace were
not covered by the firm's insurance and so their loss has been felt by
each individual member. Some tools had been 18th/21st birthday presents.
If you have not already done so, there will still be an opportunity to
contribute to the fund, as the boxes are still available in the local
shops.
Lyminge Senior Citizens' Club
On the 28th July the Club was closed for the afternoon so that we could
attend the W.I. Garden Party held at 28 Station Road. The sun shone, we
had a lovely tea and in all, a lovely afternoon. On August 3rd thirty
members and friends enjoyed the show, "South Pacific" put on by
F.D.O.S. A most enjoyable afternoon.

Sibton Park Cricket Club

The Royal British Legion - Elham Valley Branch
The Branch has had an active and successful summer, with members
enjoying a lunch in the Peggy Pike Room of Elham Village Hall on 17th
June. A great time was had by all, added to which £138.50 was raised to
help boost our Poppy Appeal for the year. Congratulations to Pat Neumark
for the original idea and for making the event such a success with her
enthusiasm and organisation.
On Saturday 31st July, forty members attended "The Last Run"
of the Royal Tournament at Earls Court. Despite the hot and steamy
conditions, everyone enjoyed this spectacular event. To add to the
significance of it all, I was honoured and privileged to be amongst some
450 Standard Bearers parading their Branch Standards on this memorable
occasion. The reception given to the appearance of the standards by the
20,000 strong audience as something that will remain in the memories of
all those taking part, including myself. It prompts the question,
"Why does such a large part of our heritage have to go" ?
Don't forget our Quiz Night in aid of the Poppy Appeal - full details
at the end of the Dates for the Diary section.
The Lyminge Gardeners' Society
A fun quiz will be held on Tuesday 28 September beginning at 7.30pm in

each team. Other societies and clubs are cordially invited to join in.

Gardening Tips for September
Plant and divide hardy perennials. Prepare tender perennials, such as
fuschias and dahlias for over-wintering. Plant outdoor bulbs for next
spring and summer, remembering the ideal planting depth for any bulb is
roughly three times its own depth from tip to base. Prepare onions for
lifting and plant new sets. Sew spring cabbages. Save money next year by
collecting seeds and taking cuttings of annuals.

Horses

from acting, e.g. directing, producing, set building, lighting,

prompting, front of house, making refreshments! Everyone is
welcome, especially if you would like to act and are in the 20-40
year age group.
Your local society needs you!
