NEWS FLASH

Lyminge has won the Kent Village of the Year competition.

Lyminge also came first in the 'Young People' section of the competition, and was a runner up in the 'Environmental Action' and 'Community Life' sections.

Community Matters

The St. Ethelburga's Well Centenary

The back page spread* gives full details of the event on Saturday 26 September, which is the centenary celebration for the wellhead. As with other parties, a lot of preparation is being put in beforehand!

The General Purposes Committee of the Parish Council are renovating and repairing the wellhead. A new grill is to be fitted at the base and all other ironwork is to be cleaned and painted. The handrail of the path from Mayfield Road into Well Field by the Well will also be repaired and replaced as necessary.

Rather than decorating the well with flowers and so on, which is done to great effect elsewhere in the country, our well will make a bold statement with banners and "people" made of pipe-lagging and kite fabric (yes, really!) under the guidance of Liz Bailey of "The Whole Hog", celebratory arts organisation. Already most of the clubs, societies and organisations in the village have returned their "wish" pennants (and what a variety of wishes!). If you still have a pennant to return, please do so soon.

The biggest banners are to be created at two workshops to be held on Saturday 5 September and Saturday 12 September at the Methodist Church Hall from 10.00am to 5.00pm (bring a packed lunch). The workshops are free and are open to anyone of any age (but under 8's must be accompanied by an adult). After they have been used for decorating the Well, the banners will be a decorative resource for use at other village functions. For further information please contact Liz Bailey on 862236.

* Unfortunately this was not available for Lyminge Online.

Community Policing

The recent hot weather has resulted in animals suffering inside cars. Irresponsible owners have left them without shade, ventilation or water, so please be aware of this problem.

The Police Surgery at Lyminge Library contin-ues to be visited by the public and is well supported in general terms. It offers you the chance to talk to your local community police officer in private without having to go to Folkestone Police Station. The Surgery is open 3.00-4.00pm Mondays and 6.00-7.00pm Thursdays.

Road checks will continue in September. Drivers without documents and those driving defective vehicles will be targeted.

Kent Air Ambulance

The Parish Council, like everyone in the community, was very saddened to learn of the tragedy which befell the Kent Air Ambulance and a two minute silence was observed at the last meeting, our thoughts going to the crew, their families and colleagues. The Council has arranged for the distribution of collection pots for the Kent Air Ambulance charity around the local shops and businesses. Councillors started the Lyminge appeal with a personal £10.00 donation each. The funds raised will help the current appeal for a second ambulance.

Reports

Sibton Park Cricket Club Report

Colts Report
Much good cricket has been played by both our sides this year. The Under 14s, under the fast-maturing captaincy of Oliver Hodgman, have won 6 and lost 6 of their games - an outstanding record. Five matches remain to complete a successful season.

Top performances with the bat have included Jamie Mears (52), Robbie Waite (48n.o.27.), Oliver Hodgman (43.34.31.), James Francis (43n.o.), Tom Guy (43.35.) and Mark Towse (41.36.34.) - all for the senior side. Among the bowlers, Patrick Osborne has bowled his left-arm spinners with distinction, ably supported by seamers Oliver Hodgman, Ben Sims, Glyn Williams and leg-spinner, Jamie Mears.

In the Under 12s, captain and highly promising wicket-keeper John Osborne (34n.o.25n.o.), William Purcell (21.17) and Nicholas Goldup (24n.o.) have batted well. Other players of note have been Bryan Washer, Richard Port and Tom Hunnisett.

The Sunday morning 'Kwik Kricket' session for even younger players has maintained its popularity and we were pleased to see several of its members moving up to the hard ball game with the Under 12s. There appears to be every reason to be confident of the future of SPCC.

Our Matchball Sponsors for August were Lyminge Bakery and Frederic Hall and Co.
We thank them both for their continuing support.

100 Club winners for August were: £25, W. Morgan; £10, W. Hewson; £5, J. Verrier.

For bookings of the pavilion contact Bob Williams on 863170. For other information contact the Secretary, Peter McKen on 862697.

Ring Janet Turner on 862158 or Doug Furminger on 862006 to register your team.

Tuesday 27 October
The October meeting will be at Lanfranc at 7.30pm and will be a talk on bee keeping by Frank Kent. Non members will be most welcome to come along.

Report
On Tuesday 18 August 26 members enjoyed a gentle stroll around Goodnestone park Gardens on a fine, warm, summer's evening. The Lady Fitzwalter joined a few members walking around the arboretum and imp-ressed us with her love and knowledge of the trees. The Gardener gave some very useful tips on plant propagation and pest control. Some even managed to find their way to the local hostelry and rounded off the evening with a drink.

Editor's Own Gardening Tip!
Whenever you are on holiday and you are likely to come back with some plants as souvenirs of your trip, take with you six bottles of wine in one of those cardboard wine-carriers with a handle which you get from a super-market. Drink the wine (!) and then, having discarded the bottles, you will have an ideal plant carrier. Personally, I have found that six small plants travel home well protected from all the clutter in the boot of the car - and they are easy to carry. Hic!

Elham Gardening Society
Wednesday 16 September
