Free Party, with Food and Drink
7.30 pm Wednesday 28th September 2005
Village Hall Club Room
Has that got your attention? Good. Each year the Lyminge
Association holds an Annual General Meeting in which officials
are elected to various positions and new committee members are
sought.
The Lyminge Association produces this Newsletter and uses
the profits from it to fund events and causes in our villages.
The Association also organises such events as Santa's visits to
children at Christmas, the Charities' Trade Fair and, most
recently, the Lyminge Festival and Garden Safari.
Apart from being a functioning committee that takes some of
the decisions that affects our village life, committee meetings
are a good place to meet people and contribute something to our
village community. So if you have considered giving two or three
hours per month, do come along and think about it a little more.
We are always looking for new people and new ideas.
After the main part of the meeting, which should take less
than an hour, there will be a slide show of gardens displayed in
the garden safari. I visited a number of these gardens and was
impressed by the way people opened up their back gates and
weeded so we could all steal ideas for our own gardens
-fantastic! Apparently the pictures are quite good too.
So, everyone, come along to the Lyminge Association AGM.
Also, consider offering just a couple of hours of your time if
you can.
Lyminge Library News - We Are Now Live!
By Jane Pace (The Librarian)
Thank you to everyone for being so patient over
the last couple of weeks since we have become computerised. Many
thanks to Gill and Beverly for doing all the hard work while
I've been on leave!
Everyone now has one ticket and can take out 12 books (8 for
children). They can be taken back to any computer library in
Kent and if you borrow a book from elsewhere, eg Folkestone or
Canterbury, they can be brought back to Lyminge.
For the free public computers you need to be a member and
are given a pin number to use. For children to use the computer,
one parent needs to come in with the child on the first visit to
give permission for them to use the internet. It is then ok for
the child to come in on their own.
Baby and Toddier Rhyme Time starts on September 8th Thursday
morning 10.00 - 10.30 every week in term time. All babies,
toddlers, mums, dads, grannies and granddads are welcome.
A free taster session for complete beginners on computers
is being held on Wednesday 12th October. One hour sessions
wilUbe held on a one to one basis. Places are limited so please
give your name and phone number to me if you are interested.
Happy Reading!
Friends of Kent Churches
Sponsored Bike Ride
This takes place on Saturday 10th September, and
involves hundreds of cyclists (and walkers) throughout Kent
visiting churches in their area, with a view to raising money
through sponsorship for the maintenance and repair of Kent
churches. Last year almost £100,000 was raised, and as usual
distributed to needy Kent churches
St Ethelburga Church in our village benefited from the charity
to the tune of £4,000 towards our roof repairs. It's not too
late to join our enthusiastic, friendly, some slightly crazy,
group of cyclists who follow a cunning course which covers about
25 churches in 25 miles. If you are even slightly tempted to
find out what the day holds in store for us cyclists, do not
hesitate - give me a call for more information and I'm sure we
can fit you in.
Equally important, if you know someone who is participating,
please sponsor them. If you do not know anyone, you can sponsor
me if you like!

Review
The Fairy Queen
On the 7th August The Rude Mechanical Theatre
Company returned to Tyne Field to present a frenetic new play
entitled The Fairy Queen.
The story chopped and changed with song, and revolved around a
prince and his captor who wake in the magical world of a fairy
community in the forest. Loosely based on stock standard
characters from commedia dell'arte - an Italian form of theatre
not too dissimilar to our own Pantomime - this play conjured up
names like Oberon and Titania that we are familiar with from
Shakespeare; although Puck wasn't there, we had enough of his
style of mayhem.
This was a suggestive and energetic production, big, open air
theatre with loud costumes and painted faces. As darkness fell,
gas lamps gave the evening a mystical feel. When the actors run
among the audience they were lit by all the small candles people
were asked to bring.
But what makes the Rude Mechanical Theatre's ; plays such fun is
the relaxed atmosphere. How many other theatre events can you
take your own picnic and wine? Some people came really prepared
with home made quiches and table-cloths set over picnic baskets.
Next year, a if this company comes again, make a point of
attending. |
National Competition
Congratulations to four Elham Valley British Legion members
of the Lyminge Bowls Club.
Bill Morgan (Captain), Sid Jacobs, Eva Williams and John
Williams reached the All England Final Bowls Competition held
recently at Melton Mowbray.
The competition has taken place over three years - firstly
winning Kent and then Southern England and then losing to
Northern Ireland in a very close game.
Well done!
Grateful Thanks
We must with great regret say a fond farewell to Lyminge. We
have lived here very happily for nearly fifty years, and during
this time we have made so many good friends. May we offer our
grateful thanks for so much happiness and friendship with our
very best wishes to you all for the future.

Etchinghill Villiage Hall
Annual General Meeting
Monday 26th September 2005
At 7.30pm
Come along to hear about the latest developments and to have
your say about what goes on at your Village Hall.
Have you got any ideas for new activities? Could we be doing
something for the youngsters in the area?
The formal part of the meeting is usually quite short and
there will be plenty of time for an informal chat with Committee
members over some free wine and cheese afterwards.
Holiday Havens
A Review by Daphne Marsh
In June of this year, my family and I travelled to France for
two weeks, staying in two very different properties in different
areas.
The reason for this review is because both homes were
previously advertised in The Lyminge Newsletter over many
months. With permission from the owners, I wish to recommend
both properties for couples and families alike.
Close to 'San Tropez' in the south, a garden flat with
secluded garden, very clean, comfortable, and well equipped, use
of swimming pool, wonderful views, close to the sea. For more
information, tel 01303 862877.
In contrast, the other property was situated in the 'Anjou1
Region, Loire Valley. Equally idyllic, the 18th Century 'Cite'
in peaceful surroundings, also has beautiful gardens and
swimming pool, secluded property very well equipped, homely and
comfortable. For more information, tel 01303 269088 or France

Lyminge Parish Plan – What’s Happening?
You may be wondering what is happening to the Parish Plan.
Much work has been going on since the questionnaires were
returned. Thank you to everybody who filled in one. We had a
fantastic response and over 51% of you sent your questionnaire
back. The sizeable task of entering the information that
everyone provided onto computer has been completed. Now the
process of analysing the results is being carried out. This is
producing interesting conclusions about many issues including
road safety and development. One example concerns the sports
facilities in the parish where early conclusions are:
1) There is dissatisfaction with the existing sports
facilities in the parish.
2) The three most wanted sports facilities within the parish
are a skateboard park,
a multi sports court and tennis courts.
3) The area around Lyminge Village Hall is the most suggested
site for new sports facilities
although there is some support for facilities in
Etchinghill and on Tayne Field.
From the analysis of all your views, a report with an action
plan will be produced. Our community and its organisations will
then be able to act on this plan and early consultations are
taking place to achieve this.
So, a lot is going on. As soon as the final report is
published you will be among the first to know the results. And
what do you consider the fourth most important physical feature
in the parish? It’s Ethelburga’s Well. To find out the top three
you will have to wait for the final report!

Plan Group). |

and its profusion of creeks that run up to Faversham.
Jonathan Fryer, a native of Sheppey, will be welcomed on 4th

an isle of Anglo Saxon origin, meaning ‘sheep island’, steeped

Arts and Culture Club/Door to Door Trips
Do you enjoy going to see West End shows,
operas, ballets, comedies and thrillers? Or what about visiting
houses and gardens of beauty and historical interest? Would you
like to make new friends with people of a similar interest in
your local area?
Based on a similar arts and culture club we have
successfully been running in the Maidstone and Tonbridge area
for the past few years, and following my subsequent move
locally, I am now setting up a division in the Lyminge-Elham
Valley area.
Planned trips for the October to December period
include Champagne Afternoon Tea at the Ritz, followed by a tour
of London’s Christmas lights and tickets to see the new smash
hit musical Billy Elliot.
All trips include the option of being picked up
from and returned to your home in either our six seater taxi or
small minibus, saving you any concern of travelling alone at
night and the hassle of driving or using public transport (no
more racing to make last train home!)
To find out more, why not come along to our
coffee morning at Etchinghill Village Hall on Saturday, 3rd
September at 10.30 am (entrance fee £1.50 towards costs). Where,
we will be launching our list of Autumn/Winter excursions and
giving you the first opportunity to reserve your place or become
a club member in an informal setting.
Alternatively to be put on my mailing list
please give me, Catherine Rosenberg, a call on 01303 862 421.
I look forward to meeting you soon!

village over the coming months.
Community Warden Gary Harrison was
invited to the last committee meeting of the Etchinghill
Residents Association and we look forward to working with him in
the future. Our grateful thanks go to him for already sorting
out the removal of the dangerous tree stump in Westfield Lane –
thank you, Gary!
MultiSports Court The subcommittee has
now been formally transferred to the Village Hall Committee and
meetings to resolve the structure of the management team are in
progress. It has been suggested that ‘execution plan’ sounded
rather final and should be renamed as ‘Implementation Plan’.
The committee would like two of the younger
members of the village to take part in the project planning and
we would like to hear from anyone aged between 12 and 16 who
would be interested to help with this project. If you would like
to hear more of what is involved, please contact Rodney on

Halloween Quiz Following on from the
success of last year’s quiz we are hoping to run a similar
evening this year. More details next month.

ETCHINGHILL W.I.
August is a ‘no meeting month’
We had to cancel our Garden Party at Dorothy Bain’s due to
her husband being ill, instead we met at Bybrook Barn Garden
Centre. After looking round the centre we enjoyed a cream tea
there.
Later in the month we enjoyed an Italian lunch hosted by Gill
Le Cras in Hawkinge Her garden is an absolute riot of colour and
was a wonderful setting for a wonderful lunch. It amazed us how
she copes with only her husband and June Price to assist her.
In September we are back to our usual meetings held on the
3rd Tuesday of the month at Etchinghill Village Hall starting at
2.30pm. Our speaker this month is Mrs Webster from UNICEF and
her subject is Street Children.
There is no theme for this month’s trading stall but any
bric-a-brac will be accepted. |
