Yet another call for HELP!
A number of people have
told me they would like to see more
variety of articles in this newsletter.
This seems like a great idea to me but I
can’t do this alone. I need Help! I need
a number of people submitting small
items of interest – 50-100 words about
local landmarks, walks, people, groups,
anything you think is interesting. I
won’t put any pressure on you to
contribute every month, just now and
then, when you have time. You can hand
write articles or just call me on 862907
with your ideas and we can take it from
there.
Graham Caldow
Wildlife Watch
Our wildlife
is under increasing pressure from
modern-day development with many species
appearing in lessening numbers. During
the last two decades, a network of
biological records centres have been set
up across the country. Their aim is to
collect and store information on local
wildlife and habitats. The status of
the local wildlife and any changes in
populations can then be determined and
the information used to protect
wildlife.
In order to
provide up-to-date information, each
record centre needs a constant stream of
wildlife information going in. The Kent
& Medway Biological Records Centre (KMBRC)
recently opened and is rapidly building
up a database for Kent’s wildlife and
habitats. Everyone can now help to
safeguard local wildlife simply by
passing on “a biological record”
to the KMBRC. All records of wildlife
will be welcomed, not just those of rare
and threatened species.
But what is
a biological record? Basically, it
consists of the four ‘W’s:
-
Who –
the person who made the observation
(with contact details in case
further information is needed.)
-
What –
the bird, plant or animal that was
seen with as much detail as
possible.
-
When –
the exact date if possible but it
can be the month, season etc.
-
Where –
the location an address/postcode if
it was in a garden or the nearest
location, i.e. the name of a road,
wood, or park.
KMBRC would like
records of all wildlife in Kent,
including foxes, butterflies, fungi,
grass snakes, etc, but the centre
appreciates that it’s not always
practical to make a note of everything
you see. So to keep it simple, you
could limit the records to summer
visitors in your garden or just to
sightings that particularly interest
you, such as seeing a water vole, common
darter dragonfly or a kestrel.
If you would
like to find out more about biological
recording and to help in protecting
Kent’s wildlife, visit the KMBRC website
at
www.kmbrc.org.uk or contact Ruth
Childs at the Records Centre on 01622
685646 or
info@kmbrc.org.uk.

*** PARISH PLAN
–
COME AND HAVE YOUR SAY ***
Come along and have your say at the
Parish Plan Roadshows at the local
village halls in
LYMINGE - Saturday - 25th
September 2004, 14.00 – 16.00
or
ETCHINGHILL - Saturday 2nd
October 2004, 10.00 – 13.00
(combined with the Safety Surgery) or
RHODES MINNIS - Saturday 2nd
October 2004, 14.00 – 16.00
This is your opportunity to shape the
area in which you live for years to
come. We will be there to listen. Do
you want more housing, less traffic,
specific facilities? Are you young,
elderly, disabled, or have special
needs? This is your chance to tell
us. We need to know what you want, or
don’t want so that we can plan for the
future.
Representatives from the District
Council, Parish Council, the Parish Plan
Group, Police, Community Warden, Fire
Department etc., will be available to
listen to your concerns and wishes,
individually or collectively. Come and
tell us what you want or don’t want for
your parish. You can even record your
thoughts and memories on video in a
private booth.
All this information, together with the
results of the Three Wishes Campaign
will be compiled into a questionnaire,
which will be distributed to the whole
parish. The results of this will then
be published in the Lyminge, Etchinghill
and Rhodes Minnis Parish Plan. The
findings of this research will be used
in planning for future development of
the area. Local societies and the
Parish Council are already implementing
some of your wishes. You can be a part
of this by just talking to us.

Editorial
Many people may have already
noticed Lyminge has lost one of
its shops: The Mayfield Stores.
The owner says this was simply
due to lack of business. Sadly,
she also reflected on a time
when Lyminge had a baker and
butcher and it might even take
you a morning to get around the
various shops. Buy locally is a
message we hear repeated over
and over again, yet – dare I
repeat it – if every one of us
makes it a point to support all
of our local businesses,
hopefully this will be the last
business to close. Each shop
that closes removes a little
piece of the community in which
we live. |

Your
Letters
Dear Editor
Please could you pass on my
thanks to the person who
delivers my newsletter. I have
always felt as if we ware in “no
man’s Land” here at Shrubbery
Cottage, Rhodes Minnis – being
between Elham and Lyminge, so
recently, when some kind person
has struggled down the lane,
braved the Border Collie and
found the rather concealed
letter box, I have been very
grateful to that person for
helping us to keep in touch with
local news, events services etc.
Whoever they are, please pass on
my appreciation, it is an
excellent newsletter. Thank you.
Carole Robertson
I don’t know who this
particular person is; however, I
do know there is an army of
volunteer distributors who give
up their time to deliver the
newsletter and we owe a debt of
gratitude to each of them.
Unfortunately, I have not
received any letters addressing
Mrs Johnson’s concerns about
goldfish being given as prizes
at Lyminge Day. I shall endeavor
to speak to someone on the
organising committee and print a
response next month. |

ourselves and allow time for
contemplation or meditation.

New Lyminge Surgery
As
of 1st September, the
following change to our
timetable will come into force:
In common with other practices
in the Shepway area, the Surgery
will no longer be open on
Saturday mornings; however, we
will be open on Friday
afternoons. Reception will be
open from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and
there will be an emergency open
surgery from 4.30pm – 5.30pm,
which will operate the same as
our old Saturday morning
surgery. There are also one or
two minor changes – patients
should collect a new timetable
from Reception. |
Lyminge Handbells
The Lyminge Handbell Ringers
have had an interesting summer
with events at Fetes, a wedding
and recently playing infront of
over 100 visitors from the
Retired Caravan Club. After a

is not too early to book us for
a pre-Christmas event. So if you
need charming traditional music
for a special festive occasion,
played on refurbished handbells,
please contact us. Weekends and
evenings only please and with as
much notice as possible. All we
need is a large table and a
minimum donation of £35, which

ETCHINGHILL W.I.
In July we had a talk and film
show on ‘Royalty in Kent’, a
most interesting subject.
The following week we had a ‘Tea
Party’ in the beautiful garden
of John and Dorothy Bains. There
were six ex-Presidents in
attendance so hopefully their
photograph will be in the East
Kent News. We were blessed with
glorious weather.
Officially we did not hold a
meeting in August but we held a
garden party with Ron Henry
playing his keyboard. He
arranged a very interesting
musical quiz which some of us
found quite difficult.
Our president also organised a
light-hearted quiz and presented
each winning table with
chocolate bars. We are looking
forward to our visit to
Sheffield Park Gardens on 7th
September.
Our next meeting is on 21st
September when our speaker will
be Mr C McCooey whose subject
will be ‘Kent Women, famous,
infamous and unsung’. The
competition is for a wartime
photograph. Do come and join us.
Our big event will be when we
host the Group Meeting on 26th
October. Our speaker will be

AGE CONCERN ELHAM RURAL
We are continuing with our plans
for our extension project,
donations of money have
gradually come in and we are
approximately one-third of the
way to our target. This money
will be used to purchase
additional equipment for the
extra people we will be able to
accommodate at the Day Centre
and for new equipment to deliver
new services. Anyone who wishes
to give a donation should
contact Lisa on 01303 862364. We
will try to provide more
information on our project on a
monthly basis so that it keeps
you up to date on our progress.
At the moment it looks as if
work will start on the building
at the beginning of February,
2005, although a lot of planning
work is being done at present to
ensure that we provide a service
to our clients whilst the
building work is being carried
out.
We are looking for a volunteer
driver who would be prepared to
drive our minibus to collect
clients and take them home at
the end of the day. A trained
escort is provided on all trips
to ensure the wellbeing of
clients.
We have a successful and
enjoyable seated exercise class
at the Day Centre on Fridays at
11am for an hour. If any older
person would like to attend
please come along and meet Lisa
Syrett, who runs the session.
The Pension Service will at the
Day Centre on Thursday,
September 23rd between 10am and
12 noon to give advice on all
aspects of Pensions and
Benefits. |
