If you are new to the Parish, you will be interested to know that the Lyminge Association not only publishes the Lyminge Newsletter but:

  • Organises regular events throughout the year; e.g. The Charities Coffee Morning, the Father Christmas Run
  • Organises “one-off” events; e.g. The Jubilee Barbecue and Beacon
  • Supports local clubs and societies; e.g. £1,000 each has recently been donated to the School’s Computer Suite, the Methodist Church improvements and the Scout Hut renovations.

Everyone in the Parish of Lyminge is a member of the Lyminge Association!
However – the Committee would be very glad to welcome more members
If you would like to join this friendly committee, which meets about once every 5/6 weeks, please either come along to the meeting, or ring Debbie Marsh on 863192 to let her know.

Letters to the Editor

From:  Alan Alton, White Horse Lane, Rhodes Minnis

Industrial Development at Jubilee Farm, Rhodes Minnis
You will no doubt be aware that the planning application for “change of use” of farm buildings, at Jubilee Farm, to warehousing for an established distribution business currently being operated from Wilson Park Industrial Park, Whitstable, was refused by Shepway District Council Planning Control Committee.
However, the applicant has lodged an appeal against this refusal and there is to be a public hearing which is to be held at the Civic Centre, Castle Hill, Folkestone on 22nd October, commencing at 10.00am.
If you wrote to Shepway District Council against the original application, you will have received notice of the appeal and given the opportunity to re-express your objections directly to the Planning Inspectorate.  If you are against this development, but have not yet expressed your views, please make a note in your diary of the appeal date and please do attend if at all possible, as a strong protest from as many affected residents as possible can only help to influence the Inspectorate.

Be aware that the original application advises traffic movement of 20 cars per day, 15 goods vehicles per day and approximately 1 lorry per day.  Assuming just one return trip per day and no movements on Saturday/Sunday or Bank Holidays, this is a starting figure of 17900 movements per year!

From:  Norman J. King, Kimberley Terrace, Lyminge

I have read, with much interest, the correspondence between Mr. Adrian Hackford, and the PCC.  I am one of the signatories to the Statement of Concern, and write to confirm my support for the Statement.
For too long, we have had to endure the, “Mummy knows best” attitude of the PCC, amply demonstrated in a farce of a meeting convened in the Church in November last.  What is needed is for the PCC to come down from their ivory tower, and face the parishioners of Lyminge, concerning the future of THEIR church.  I suggest a well-advertised meeting, inviting church goers and non-church goers to attend, on neutral territory, i.e. the village hall.  Any board of directors, which attempted to steam roller plans for change, would soon be voted off the board, and we, the parishioners, are shareholders in OUR church.  If the attendance at such a meeting is only seven persons and a dog, democracy will be seen to be at work, a quality which seems to have been overlooked by the PCC.
If it is good enough for Parliaments and the Church Synod to debate in public, it is surely good enough for the PCC to do so, and so appeal to all members of the community.  In conclusion, I note, with concern, that after making a decision on the reordering of the church, they intend to conduct a consolation exercise (Editor’s note – this is entirely my fault – it should have read “consultation” – sorry).  To me, this implies that they have already made a decision, which will require us to be consoled.  Again, a further demonstration that “Mummy knows best”.

Editor’s Note:  Again, very sorry about last month’s typo!  I know this is a very contentious issue and I am happy to publish a reply (perhaps from the PCC?) to Adrian and Norman’s letters, but I feel further debate should continue between the PCC and other parties.  If, at any time, a public meeting is to be held, it can, of course, be advertised in the Lyminge Newsletter, as can the details of any decisions made.

From:  C. Smith, Station Road, Lyminge

In the past two months I have lost two cats on Station Road, outside Everist Court, to the speeding cars.  Obviously 30mph speed signs are having no effect.  When you stand and watch the traffic entering Lyminge, it seems some people have not registered the fact that they are entering a residential area.  Is it not time that either the Council fit some more effective traffic calming measures, or people start taking responsibility for their actions and adhere to the speed limit?  Because next time, it could be a child, or a pensioner who suffers the same fate.

Many thanks to all who donated books and other items for my Book Sale and Coffee morning at the end of July, and also to those who attended and gave so generously on the day. The sum of £49 was raised for the rabbits. Thank you!
KIND HOMES are still needed for RABBITS. We have:
CLOVER and MISTY, two females who live together in harmony. They do not like being handled, so would not be suitable for children, but would make ideal pets for somebody with limited time to give.
If you would be able to give them a home, please ring Meg on 07773 296732.

Genealogy
Peter Davies will be pleased to know if anyone in Lyminge has any knowledge of his Ellender family who lived in the village until the 1920s.  Three of his Gran’s brothers are commemorated on the church war memorial having died in the Great War.  Please contact him on peter@jdavies777.freeserve.co.uk

Rhodes Minnis Evening Circle
We had a very interesting talk given by Marion Hoare on Demelza House, the Children’s Hospice in Sittingbourne, how funds were raised to commence the building of the House and the continuing work by the Fund Raisers to keep the money coming in as they do not get any help from the government in this essential work.  Marion has been involved with the charity right from the foundations of the building so she knows the Hospice very well.  She gave us an imaginary guided tour around the House with the aid of photographs.  We were given an insight into the essential respite and support given to the children along with their families.
Demelza House can make good use of any unwanted mobile phones (they can be recycled) and foreign coins (ie before the Euro) as well as the usual bric a brac and clothing, so please drop any items in one of their charity shops, our nearest is Hythe or Ashford.
Out next meeting will be on the 18th September at 7.30pm in Rhodes Minnis Village Hall when Sue LeTouze who will be giving a short demonstration of T’ai Chi and also talk on how she uses this form of exercise in her role of Occupational Therapist in Mental Health.
We meet every third Wednesday in the month at 7.30pm in the Rhodes Minnis Village Hall.  We are a non political and non religious group (similar to WI).  We are a friendly group of ladies (with a wide age range) who like an evening out away from the usual routine.  Visitors are always very welcome and we look forward to seeing you.
Our next outing is a voyage from Folkestone Harbour and up the River Thames, through Tower Bridge on the Waverley, the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world.  The return to Folkestone will be by coach from Tilbury.  This trip will be on Friday the 27th September 2002.  Can I remind members that we have to arrive at Folkestone Harbour at 9.30am latest; the anticipated return to the harbour will be 7.30pm.
The Waverley carries 800 passengers so if anyone wishes to join us tickets can be purchased on the day, on the steamer.
Occasionally we arrange a supper evening, sampling a different venue from the many choices we have in the local villages.  Suggestions of good eateries are always welcome.
For further information please contact Eileen Sless on 01303 863081

Literary/Creative Writing Workshop

Etchinghill W.I.
Apologies to Etchinghill W.I. Members, whose report was inadvertently missed from the August issue.
We held our meeting on the 16th July. Due to military commitments, our speaker Major O'Leary was unable to come. We were very fortunate to have Mr. Chambers fill in at the last minute. He gave a very thought-provoking talk on ghosts. Pluckley is very well-known for its ghosts, as is Reculver Towers. Mrs. Bain came first in the competition, which was for a Military Service Momento. A garden party was held on 6th August. The next meeting will be on 10 September. Do come and join us on Tuesday afternoons at 2.30pm

LYMINGE VILLAGE HALL - BUILT FOR US ALL TO USE

Following our recent appeal in the Lyminge Newsletter, we were approached by Helen Burr (Traditional Architectural Design Service) and Catherine Hughes (Planning Policy Consultant).
They very kindly and for free, produced a comprehensive and professional document with design proposals to assist the committee in its discussions regarding increased usage and providing a facelift to the Village Hall. The hall is approaching its 20th year and will now benefit from some treatment both inside and out.

We are writing separately to all the clubs and other organisations that currently use the hall to find out what they would like to see by way of improvement and we also need YOUR individual views. Please take five minutes to complete our survey published within the Newsletter. Then post or take it to 41, Palm Tree Way so that we may find out what the village (and visitors too) want from its hall. Remember - use it or lose it! Well not quite - but your views will really provide the basis on which we progress.

If you have any other ideas or thoughts you wish to share with the Hall Trustees you can also email us at crafter342@aol.com
An update bulletin on the response and ideas will be printed in next months Newsletter (don't forget to get your response in prior to 18th September copy deadline).

Although not mentioned in the survey we are also keen to promote the efforts of Tessa Bedwell and Steve Ivory with their community liaison with the youngsters of the village.

Please don't forget the Village Hall is yours - the natural choice for sport, leisure and social events.
Call Joy Bartley on 862538 to discuss your booking requirements.

You can access the survey online by clicking here. This can be printed out, or copied into an email.

Pilgrims Hospice Lottery

There are few families which have not been touched by terminal illness. The effect of caring for a sick person on family members and neighbours can be mentally and physically draining.

Pilgrims Hospices is a local charity providing medical and nursing care for terminally-ill people living in East Kent and support for their carers. There are 3 Pilgrims Hospices in Canterbury, Margate and now at Willesborough near Ashford - and, altogether 19 highly qualified nurses helping to care for patients in their own homes, backing up local family doctors and district nurses.

Pilgrims Hospices is not part of the NHS, although it receives a grant of about 20% of its annual running costs from the local health authority. Hospice care is free of charge to patients and their families. It will cost £5 million to run Pilgrims Hospices this year alone. Much of this comes from the generosity and goodwill of the people of East Kent. The Pilgrims Hospice Lottery has now been running for more than 6 years and has raised more than £1,250,000 for our local "good cause". Most people can manage to find £1.00 a week for a good cause. Everyone would like to have the fun of frittering away a £2,000 prize. For just £1.00 a week, supporters can have a number in the weekly draw, with a good chance of winning one of the 206 weekly prizes.

Pilgrims Hospice Lottery has a new local Champion in Lyminge and Etchinghill. Peter Peacock has accepted the challenge to recruit new players into the lottery and if they wish, to collect their lottery subscription from their home. If you would like more information about Pilgrims Hospice Lottery, please telephone the Lottery Office on 01227 762155 and we will send Peter to call and enrol you.

Don't forget, if you're not in, you won't win!

The Charity Golf Match, with the assisstance of Etchinghill Golf Course, raised nearly £700 and both these sums will help towards building the new Hall.
Our sincere appreciation to TOTAL who generously sponsored this match.
Please watch out for more events and help us again.

The Lyminge Gardeners Society

The Summer Show

Thank you to the many people who helped make the Summer Show such a success. The organisers participants and those who visited in the afternoon to admire the produce and enjoy cake and tea. Several first time exhibitors went away clutching certificates as did two persons who had not participated in 40 and 10 years respectively! A special thank you to Eileen Hall who presented the prizes and cups with such style and humour.
The Charlie Seymour Cup was presented for the first time (having been donated to the Society by his son and daughter) to the young person who has the most aggregate points for the Spring and Summer Shows. The cup was won Jointly by Annabel and Natalie Long, congratulations to you both!
Charlie Seymour was along standing and loyal member of the Society. He and his wife Doris, had a wonderful garden and won many cups and certificates over the years. The cup is a fitting memorial to them both.

Garden Tips for September

Particularly as a result of the recent hot weather, most boarders are "going over". A little dead heading and pruning may prolong flowering for a few weeks longer but now is a good time for taking stock. Note what needs splitting, moving or removing and where the gaps are. Then work gently through September and October tackling a small area at a time. Collect seeds and take cuttings as you go. Also take time off, to visit garden centres and buy bulbs to plant for your spring display.

East Kent Badger Group

Tuesday September 24th The Methodist Hall at 7.30pm.
Several Garden Society members have this year experienced badgers marauding through their gardens. Bryan Hall of the East Kent Badger Group will give a talk entitled "Badgers and other Wildlife in the domestic garden". Come along and listen then decide who is friend and who is foe. Non members are very welcome subject to £1.00 entrance fee.
