Lyminge Association News

A REMINDER! There will be a Clubs and Societies Evening on Friday 14 September 2001 at Lyminge School. About 20 clubs or societies will be present and if your organisation has not registered a wish to attend – get on to Mike Foxon on 862073. It will be an ideal opportunity for local organisations to promote themselves and also a good opportunity to recruit additional members or volunteer helpers. For those who are new to the village, or those who are thinking of a new hobby, it will be your chance to see what is on offer, without commitment. Lyminge School Parents and Friends will provide refreshments during the evening. During the evening the Lyminge Association will hold a short Annual General Meeting, to which everyone will be most welcome.

Lyminge Parish Council

The next two meetings are on 3rd September and 1st October at Lyminge Village Hall, starting at 7.30 pm.

Lighting
The Parish Council has been in contact with KCC about the lighting along the path beside the school from Church Road to Kimberly Terrace. KCC regard the cost of getting the lights working again as prohibitive. The Parish Council recognises the importance of lighting on footpaths and will continue to seek a solution.

Policing
The police now have a Rural Response Team based at Hythe, consisting of six officers under Inspector Ian Foster, with responsibility for policing rural areas. The team intends to have meetings with parish councils in the area three times a year to discuss problems in villages. If you need to contact the police:
 • call 999 when life is threatened, a crime is in progress, or when there is a road accident and a serious injury

 • call 01303 850055 to report a suspicious incident, to report an abandoned or untaxed car or to report a problem that you cannot resolve and you think involves the police
 • call 01622 650065 to report a crime that has happened to you and the offenders have gone
 • call 01303 289183 to report lost or found property
 • call 01304 218151 to contact the Parish / Neighbourhood Watch Liaison Officer, Caroline Barnett, to discuss matters that do not require police attendance there and then

Rural transport
The Countryside Agency is channelling government funding into rural transport schemes. The Parish Transport Grant allows parishes to apply for up to £10,000 for new schemes that have a wide measure of community support (the funding would be for 75% of the cost of the scheme). Kent Rural Community Council has appointed a rural transport officer, who can provide advice and support. If you are interesting in pursuing this idea, you can ring or email me (details below).

T.V. Programme not to miss!

"Animal Champions" is an eleven-part series featuring people who have performed outstanding works for animals and will be broadcast on Anglia and Meridian TV each Tuesday at 7.30pm from 4th September. The aim of the series is to portray smaller organisations or individuals who work for animals without help from the larger animal groups like the RSPCA.

Friends of the Lord Whisky Animal Sanctuary, Stelling Minnis, will be interested to know that Matthew Kelly introduced five of the episodes when he visited Lord Whisky. The animals with him at the Sanctuary, most of them are long-time friends you may have met or read about.

Almost certain to be shown will be "Sleepy Head", the badger whose life was saved by local man, Ken Galvin. Out for an early morning cycle ride, he saw the badger in the middle of a quiet country lane, barely breathing, and thought he would shortly breathe his last. On returning at lunchtime, the badger was still breathing, surrounded by flies. He gently picked him up and placed him under a hedge, thinking that at least he would be more comfortable. He went home, but in the evening he kept thinking about him and decided to cycle back to the spot. The badger was still breathing but slower than ever, so he decided to ring the Sanctuary, who went with him to pick the badger up. The badger had nasty injuries, which were badly fly-blown and was unconscious. For several days it was touch and go, but after about a week he turned the corner and has continued to make steady progress and will soon be released

Thanks to Ken, also Percy the Seagull, Patience and Curiosity, Mistry and Mr. Peanuts, the Hedgehog, to mention a few.

The Rivals
Not long now to our lavish production of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s, "The Rivals"! This masterpiece of 18th Century English drama is viewed by many as one of the funniest comedies in the English language. The pay centres on the love affairs of two young couples and complications in events lead to comic deception and misunderstandings. The production will run from the 19th to the 24th November in Lyminge Village Hall commencing at 7.45pm and is not to be missed! The Box Office opens at G.W. Finn and Son, Lyminge on Saturday 27 October. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Reports

Whirlwind at Lyminge

Extraordinary Havoc at Sibton Park; Wind’s Strange and Violent Vagaries

As I type this, it is a hot and sultry evening in August with the occasional rumble of thunder in the distance. Yet Autumn is just around the corner. Let us hope that it does not bring us weather as reported in the "Folkestone, Hythe, Sandgate and Cheriton Herald" on September 22 1906. I am very grateful for Duncan Harrington for bringing this to my attention. Ed.

The storm of wind and rain of the early hours of Tuesday morning played havoc at Sibton Park, the estate of Mr. John Howard, culminating in a phenomenon remarkable, if not unparalleled in the history of Lyminge and the surrounding district. The wind all night had been blowing from the west, but about half-past four a current set in from the north; the two currents, it is supposed, met and the result was a whirlwind of cyclonic, almost miraculous force, which, for a distance of several hundred yards, swept all before it.

Huge branches were torn off giant-like trees, and twisted into all sorts of fantastic shapes, as though they had been but mere chips of wood in the hands of a modern Hercules, whilst other trees were hewn bodily to the ground, uprooted by the violence of the wind. The whirlwind or cyclone, whatever it may be called, took a zig-zag course for about five hundred yards in length and ran in a perfectly regular measurement of 50 yards wide.

Outside the residence of Mr. Howard, there is a magnificent clump of sycamore trees, and it is believed that it is owing to this fact that the house was not greatly damaged, if not totally destroyed. The building was in the direct course of the whirlwind, which it is thought must have been partially impeded by the group of trees and then sent upwards.

It was, indeed, a sight to behold that the whirlwind left in its wake. The ground was literally strewn with branches large and small, one branch being hurled into the air and dropped quite 50 yards from the tree of which it formed a part. One tree, a pollard, about two hundred years old, was terribly mangled; another was a hawthorn tree of about fifty years; the damage to both is quite beyond description and must really be seen to be believed. Happily, two fine old trees were just out of the course of the cyclone and were untouched.

But the clump of trees referred to did not stop all the damage. After being sent up into the air, the whirlwind must have descended again, for in a perfectly straight line with the clump and about half a mile off, a roof was lifted bodily off an old shed and carried twenty two yards. The roof weighed six hundredweight, and took five men to lift it when first put on to the shed. With a final sweep at Councillor Jenner’s residence, which is but a few yards off, and which, in the words of Mrs. Jenner herself, "fairly shook", the whirlwind must have spent its force in the open country beyond, for from this point nothing more of it – in the way of damage – can be traced.

Garden Hints for September
After the reasonably leisurely pave of gardening during July and August, September is a time of increased activity. Remove dead and dying herbaceous material. Divide clump-forming plants. Collect seeds. Prepare new beds and borders. Reduce the amount of grass mowing. Remove the thatch and reseed bare patches in the lawn. Top-dress lawns after spiking. Take a good look around the garden and then spend the darker evenings drawing up plans for any areas you wish to replant or replan and much, much more!

Would you like to know – first hand – how and why?
If so….
on Saturday 15th September, from 12 noon to 3.00pm the church of St Mary & St. Ethelburga will be open so you can see for yourself:
 • How things have changed
 • What’s going on now
 • What our plans are for the future.
WARNING

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating. So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again! Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market. Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
