Millennium Plans
Bulbs
The Lyminge Association masterminded the planting of a large number of
bulbs on Saturday 11 September and are very grateful to everyone who came
to help, especially the children. The Millennium Committee and the Lyminge
Association are very grateful to a number of anonymous donors of bulbs and
to Mr. and Mrs. Godden, Mr. and Mrs. Cross and Mrs. Jarrett. The Parents
and Friends of Lyminge School bought a half hundredweight of bulbs, which
Peter Ironside (of Farthing Common Plant Centre) kindly matched with a
donation of another half hundredweight. Gills' Hardware also contributed
very generously. The Committee is also very grateful to Kevin Baldock (of
KJB Gardening) who mowed the sites prior to the planting. The recent rain
will have given the bulbs a help in settling in - all we have to do now is
await the Millennium Spring!
Lantern and Fire Sculptures Workshops
Workshops are planned during half term week for everyone, young and old,
to come along and make lanterns for the processions planned for New Year's
Eve. The planned dates are Monday 25th, Tuesday 26th, Thursday 28th and
Friday 29th at the Scout Hut, Lyminge and Wednesday 27th at Etchinghill
Village Hall. The times are 10am-12pm, 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm. There will be
posters around the village with the full details (which may be subject to
change). Participants are strongly advised to wear old clothing! Children
under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
The lanterns are simple and very effective and are made of bamboo and
tissue paper. The fire sculptures will be much more elaborate - and huge!
They will be placed in the field between the church and the village hall
and will be lit just after midnight on 1 January 2000 and will provide a
stunning background for the fireworks.
A "Snapshot of Lyminge"
Work on the book which will show a year in the life of Lyminge continues
apace. Everyone is reminded that if they are part of an event which could
be included to contact Richard Pealing on 862907. Your own photographs can
also be considered, so long as the event took place this year.
Programme of Events
This time a programme of events for 2000 really should be attached!

Newsletter Distributor(s) Needed!
Liz Fry and Lyn Fagg have been delivering Newsletters as a temporary
measure - for the last 10 years! They are now 'retiring'. Volunteers are
sought, therefore, for their 'patch' which encompasses Skeete and
Woodlands (the area up to the top of the hill and over the brow to the
junction). This 'patch' could easily be split should there be several
volunteers. Please let the Editor, Liz Coleman (863197), know during
October if you can help - as otherwise this is the last Newsletter which
households in this area will receive. Thank you very much Liz and Lyn from
all the Lyminge Association.
Letters to the Editor
Readers are asked to note that the opinions expressed in the letters to
the Editor are not necessarily those held by the Editor or the Lyminge
Association and that everyone has a right to reply. Letters should be on
local topics only and less than 200 words. Even if the letter is to be
published anonymously (which is discouraged), please let the Editor have a
contact name and number in case there are any queries.
From Janet Laing, Lyminge
What a welcome addition to the village "Lindsay's Larder" is.
Sitting under an umbrella on the forecourt is a very pleasant place to
drink coffee and watch the world go by! Sunday lunch is an opportunity for
people living on their own to have a road; I have tried it!
From "Anonymous, Lyminge"
This letter is the view of others and myself and I feel concerns our
community.
Myself, neighbours and friends are becoming tired and deaf due to the
out-of-rhythm and tune of the bellringing on a Monday evening. There is a
law regarding noise pollution. I am quite sure they could move their
so-called practice time to the afternoon, especially in the summer months,
as I am sure these individuals have little or nothing to do during the
day.
Although this is I understand, a traditional village pastime, we do
however also believe it to be nothing more than noise pollution in our
community when you cannot open your windows or sit in the garden in the
evening. However, if this is absolutely necessary, and no other
alternative ways of practising can be established, then I suggest maybe
the enrolment of some rather more mature bellringers is necessary.
I have lived in the area of Lyminge for 22 years and believe my opinion
and the opinion of others I have spoken to, be a welcome one and would be
pleased of a valid response to this argument.
From Mr. E. Want, Lyminge
As an old Lymingite, might I reply to the article in last month's
Newsletter regarding the so-called bus shelter? Please do not blame the
bus drivers. Who put the shelter the wrong way round is more to the point.
Why, oh why did they not go to Mayfield to see how a bus shelter faces the
road? Who wants to sit and look at toilets and a car park while waiting
for the bus? I have named it "Lyminge Folly" as I think a good
more do. I think a J.C.B. to lift it and turn it round may do the trick.
From Anna, Etchinghill
Re. Messing Dogs' Owners
People spitting on pavements, urinating or vomiting in corners would cause
an outcry to make the sky fall down. Dogs messing where people have a
right and a need to walk, on the contrary, is quite acceptable and normal
as has always been, despite being an offence punishable by a £1,000 fine.
What a laugh that is when I see the dog "doing" it just in front
of the notice either fondly watched by the owner or totally ignored by him
walking carelessly away.
Never mind, the cars come along and their wheels make the mess disappear
in minutes, spreading it all along the road, invisible and even, so much
so that not a single shoe sole will miss its share for yards and yards of
the road. Removing the stuff (like I have to frequently) does not
eliminate the problems it causes. Would you sit your baby in that same
spot or retrieve your accidentally dropped hanky? I always douse the area
with bleach; that will be the day when dog owners will do the same!
Cats are even worse; can you ever catch them at it? No way! So it goes on;
dogs in the lane, cats in the garden. There I hover between the two, eyes
down, look in, 'till Bingo! And rubber gloves and polythene bag and bleach
and here we go again!
In spite of all that, I know there are good and caring dog owners in this
neighbourhood and we are grateful for their civilised behaviour.
From S.C. and R.W. Cox, Skeete
Right to reply - planning application for one bungalow.
We wish to correct statements made in last month's newsletter from
'concerned locals' purportedly quoting details of our planning
application. The shower block currently under construction has had the
benefit of planning permission since last September. The caravan site has
been in existence for some seven years without reported incident, albeit
poorly attended. The shower block should rectify this. Any household can
start a Bed and Breakfast concern without the need for planning
permission.
The 'two residences' are a figment of someone's imagination. Gaining
planning permission for new residences in an AONB is not without
precedent, as any member of our Parish Council can confirm. Two are within
our own hamlet.
Should anyone feel they can still accuse us of using half truths and
errors in our submission to the council we suggest that they look to page
31 of the 17.09.99. edition of the "Herald".

"capture" your telephone number and to use it to make all sorts
of telephone calls and run up huge bills - for you to pay! If you are
dubious as to whether they are bone fide, ask them to give their number;
put down your 'phone and then ring 151 (BT) and ask the operator if checks
are legitimate.

Developments in the Churchyard
Every resident of Lyminge parish has an interest in the churchyard if
only because all of us, churchgoers or not, have the right to be buried
there. For many the churchyard also contains the graves of family or
friends; our war dead are commemorated there, and even the most casual
passer-by can hardly fail to be struck by the spectacle of the ancient
church in its traditional setting.
Recently the Parochial Church Council (P.C.C.), the local voluntary
group which is responsible for the churchyard, has prepared a draft plan
for the future management of the churchyard.
The plan involves some change in the appearance of the churchyard over
the next few years, particularly to the presently unmanaged area to the
north of the churchyard adjacent to the footpath (which will be managed as
meadow). Other proposals which may be of wide interest include some tree
planting at the boundary, a historical survey of the monuments and a
wildlife survey.
For the information of the Parish, the draft plan can be seen at
Lyminge library until the end of the year. If you should like to help with
the forthcoming work, or have any enquiries or comments, please either
speak to the librarian or contact:
Philip Wilson, 1 Kent Cottages, Lyminge.

who came and supported us.
Elham Valley Lions
For the third successive year, EVLC supported by Lombard General
Insurance Co. Ltd. and with the help of Etchinghill Golf Club, hosted a
Charity Golf Competition followed by a dinner and prize-giving on Friday
10 September.
Last year the Lions' Club raised nearly £1,500 for the Pilgrims'
Hospice Appeal 2000, so we were delighted to present Peter Fowler, Vice
Chairman and Pat White, appeal co-ordinator, this year with a cheque for
£3,000.
Building work for the Hospice on the Hill was started in July by
contractors R.J. Barwick and is expected to be finished by September 2000.
1.3 million pounds has been raised so far, with the final target set at
3.5 million. Dozens of small and large fund-raising events are in progress
in the region and whole communities covered by the Hospice have taken this
project to their hearts.
The golf competition for the Lombard Cup was generously supported by
many local companies, including Barratts of Folkestone, who sponsored a
hole in one with a prize of a new Rover 200. Other prizes went to the
runners up, third place and best team effort.
Richard Cowling, P.R. Officer said, "We had an excellent day's
golf in glorious surroundings. We would like to thank all those who
participated, and their sponsors".
Thoroughly Lyminge
The pots are still available in the shops for donations to the
"Thoroughly Lyminge" fund to help the workers at
"Thoroughly Wood" replace their tools lost in the fire. £14.00
was raised by one lady who made cards which she sold to her friends. Thank
you very much for making, selling and buying the cards.
Lyminge W.I.
The Speaker at the meeting after the summer break was Mrs. Ellis on
"Antique Jewellery". Most of what she showed us were sea pearls.
We all enjoyed our garden party held in Mrs. Bain's garden.
Lyminge Senior Citizen's Club
Since many were on holiday during August, our numbers were down and we
had no speakers. The members who attended had enjoyable afternoon's
playing cards and bingo. Early in October we are planning a fish and chip
evening at Dungeness. This is always a popular evening.
D. Bain.
Sibton Park Cricket Club
The winners of the September 100 Club Draw were:

Lyminge Gardeners' Society
The A.G.M. will be held in the club room at the village hall on Tuesday
October 26th at 7.30pm. After the formal part of the evening, refreshments
will be served and, no doubt, gardens and gardening discussed. The Society
has enjoyed another successful year and thank you to all those who have
supported the talks and outing and the spring and summer shows.
Gardening Tips for October
Collect leaves from lawns and any borders where they are covering small
plants. Compost them wither in layers on the compost heap, or in sealed
black bin liners, making some holes for drainage. Bring tender pot plants
into a cool, frost-free area. Dig any open ground. Scarify lawns. Grass
seed can be sown and turf laid early in the month. Start to reduce
watering of house plants. Light the fire, get plenty of seed catalogues
and enjoy planning the perfect garden for next year.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own
factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of being only one
of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line
Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries
a severe weather rating. So, if you have old box sash style
windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again!
Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line
appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of
the best on the market. Remember, we are suppliers to the trade
both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see
one!
