Association News – Clubs and Societies’ Evening and the AGM
The Clubs and
Societies’ Evening held in Lyminge School Hall was a great success – and
would have been even better if more members of the public had visited to see
what was on offer! There are clubs, societies and associations in the Parish
to suit every taste and age – there’s certainly lots to do in Lyminge!
If you were not able to attend the evening, an up-to-date list of all the
organisations is held in the Library. A warm Lyminge welcome is guaranteed
to any new member of a club. The Lyminge Association’s short AGM was held
on the same night. Debbie Marsh, the Chairman, reported on a quieter year
than the Millennium Year (but we all needed to recover!), but no less
successful. Debbie was able to present a cheque for £1,000 to the Methodist
Church to help with their appeal for funds to renovate and modernise the
Methodist Church Hall. It is hoped that the works for the ramp for disabled
and push-chair users can start soon. A further £1,000 will be given to the
school to help with the provision of the computer facilities. These
facilities will eventually be available for community use.
Parish
News
Bus Problems
With the start of the new school
year, a number of parents have reported problems with the bus that takes
their children to school, including:
- children being left at their
bus-stop in Lyminge
- children not being picked up
from the Harvey Grammar School
- children being late at
Folkestone School for Girls and missing registration
- children being left at their
school in Canterbury
- buses being overcrowded to
an extent that seems dangerous
- the rules for when bus
passes are accepted being unclear and applied inconsistently
If you’ve experienced similar
problems and would like to work with others on a campaign to improve the
service, please get in touch. James Butcher, 863581, james.butcher@work-without-walls.co.uk
Good News Regarding Buses!
The
following news is from David Hall, Public Transport Manger, Kent County
Council (Direct Telephone: 01622 221040)
"I am delighted to inform you
that following Kent County Council’s decision to increase its support for
socially necessary bus services this year by £544,000 to just over £3
million, we are able to support the continuation of evening bus 17 on the
existing timetable."
"Shepway Care and
Repair (SCR)"
Shepway Care and Repair is an
advisory service for elderly and disabled homeowners. They provide advice
and support to repair and/or adapt your home. This includes technical advice
from their surveyor, approved contractors to carry out the works, and advice
on possible funding options to finance the works. SCR is currently trying to
inform residents of Shepway who live in rural areas of changes to their
service. In addition to their normal service, they provide a handyperson and
an energy efficiency programme. See over for further details.
Energy
Efficient Programme
If you are in receipt of a
means-tested benefit, a low-income family or you are elderly in receipt of
income support or council tax benefit, you could be eligible for a HEES/New
HEES Plus grant from the Government. This could include draught-proofing,
cavity wall insulation, heating, loft insulation and many other energy
saving measures. If this applies to you, please contact us for a FREE energy
survey.
Handyperson/Minor
Repairs Service
Our handyperson can carry out
minor repairs to your home. If you are elderly or disabled you could apply
for assistance. If you are in receipt of a means-tested benefit you only pay
for the cost of the materials. If you are not in receipt of a means-tested
benefit, you pay for the cost of materials and a £5.00 hourly labour
charge.
If you are unsure if you are
eligible for any of the services which we provide, or if you would like any
more information, contact us on 244434. Alternatively you can visit our
offices at 6 Town Walk, Folkestone.
Neighbourhood
Watch
In local areas of the south
east of Kent there has been a number of reports of burglary by someone who
calls to your house offering to do work (tree-felling, re-surfacing of
driveways etc.) and sometimes bogus officials. Then at a later time the
property is burgled. The Police are especially looking for a man who is
described as; white, approximately 55 years old, 5’10" tall, slight
build, grey scruffy hair, unshaven, local accent. If anyone answering to
that description, or any suspicious character calls at your house, ring Caroline
Barnett on 01304 218151. Caroline is also asking for help following a
burglary at Sibton Park Cricket Club between 15th and 20th
September. Two ride-on movers, a bowling machine and the contents of the bar
were taken.
America
It is
the aim of the Lyminge Association to help foster a good community for us
all to live in. We may have our differences and disagreements as
individuals, but on the whole we appreciate and respect one another and
enjoy living in this wonderful part of the world. Our hearts go out to all
those in the community of the world who have lost family members, friends
and colleagues in the violent acts which took place on September 11th
2001. Even in our own parish there are people who worried about their
relatives and friends abroad. It is a small world, and so many have been
affected. It is difficult to see to the future, to see if any good will come
of all this; perhaps an end to terrorism in all forms, perhaps more
destruction. What we need to do is to look out for our neighbours and give
help where we can, and give our family an extra hug.

Ride and Road Safety Ride
The closure of public rights of
way this year due to foot and mouth has led to double the amount of riders
and their horses being involved in fatal road traffic accidents. The British
Horse Society, in conjunction with ‘Horse and Hound’ and ‘Horse’
magazines are organising a ride and road safety weekend on October 13th
and 14th 2001. Riders in Lyminge are all getting together to ride
an agreed route on Sunday 14 October. They hope to raise drivers’
awareness of horses on the road and to distribute leaflets en route. All
riders, carriage drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are welcome to join in.
Horses on the ride must be traffic-proof, and high-visibility clothing must
be worn by all people participating.
One of the local riders taking part is Christina Jepson. Her beloved horse,
Tom, was involved in a road traffic accident earlier this year at Lyminge
and suffered horrific injuries. After months of veterinary treatment and
dedication from his owner, he has recovered sufficiently to join the ride.
If you would like to join us, please contact Christina Jepson on 864280 or
Maz Ironside on 863362 for further details. Meeting at Lyminge Village Hall
main car park at 11.00am, going to Kings Arms Elham for 12 noon and

Lyminge Dramatic Society
Rehearsals are well under way for
our lavish production of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s "The
Rivals". The design and construction of the ambitious set has commenced
and the hunt is on for WIGS, which we need to hire. This masterpiece of 18th
century English drama is viewed by many as one of the funniest comedies in
the English language. The play centres on the love affairs of two young
couples and complications in events lead to comic deception and
misunderstandings. The production will run from Wednesday 21st
to Saturday 24th November in Lyminge Village Hall, commencing
at 7.45pm and is not to be missed! Senior Citizens will be welcome free of
charge on the evening of Tuesday 20th November at 7.45pm and no
tickets will be needed for this night. The Box Office opens at G.W. Finn and
Son, Lyminge on Saturday 27 October. Book early to avoid disappoint-ment.
N.B. if any one can help with wigs, can they please contact Trevor Gasson on

The proposed alterations to
Lyminge Church
The Lyminge Newsletter is not unused to
controversy and the Editor is always happy to publish letters which may
cause debate – indeed, this is precisely what a good Newsletter should be
for. Please note however, that; the Editor does not express an opinion; that
everyone has a right of reply; that no letter will be printed that is unkind
or rude in anyway; that no letter will be published unless the Editor knows
the name and address of the author (it is recognised that sometimes
"name and address supplied" may be necessary, but it is not
encouraged). Please note that the author of this letter has been charged an
appropriate cost for the entry which is longer than the preferred 200 words
long.
"As
part of the Windows on the Church open day held in Lyminge Parish Church on
15th September 2001, the proposals of the PCC's Space Working Party (SWP) to
substantially alter the interior of the church building were exhibited. The
proposals include the removal of pews, choir stalls, and organ, and the
partitioning off of areas in the north aisle, chancel and tower for rooms.
These proposals were based upon the Second Interim Report of the SWP dated
12th May 2001, in which the nature and reasoning behind the alterations are
set out. It now appears that many people in the village felt excluded from
the discussion due the prior announcement of this event that explicitly
suggested that people who are opposed to change need not attend (Newsletter
September 2001).
"The
purpose of this letter is not to rally opposition to the proposals, but to
broaden the scope of consultation to ensure that the interior that we end up
with, is one that enhances the building for all the church users of Lyminge.
By ‘church users' I refer also to the many villagers who make use of the
church without being members of the regular congregation for the formal acts
of worship.
"The
central premise for action is formulated by the SWP in the Second Interim
Report : "The consequence of inaction is not preservation of the status
quo, but a decline which may lead ultimately to the closure of the
church." The soundness of this is debatable. The purpose of any church
is to enable people to experience spirituality. The style of worship, the
interior and the music are all ways of achieving that. Should these be
improved, it could indeed lead to a fuller church. However, should any
alterations actually offend the broad base of church users, the church will
empty even faster.
"Most
of us are open to change and adaptation. There is however particular concern
in the village with regard to the issue of aesthetics. For a great many
people, beauty is a direct aid to spiritual experience. In the context of
the church, beauty is seen and heard in the building itself : its fabric,
the furnishings, the music, the light and the artefacts. Should the proposed
alterations enhance the beauty of this already uniquely beautiful place, we
must wholeheartedly support the initiatives. If they compromise or diminish
its beauty, we must wholeheartedly resist them.
"Of
course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Every user of Lyminge Church
is a valid ‘beholder', and each should have the opportunity to contribute
on the issue of beauty. This is your opportunity. All interested villagers
are invited to participate in a network of church users that can provide an
‘aesthetic conscience' for the PCC throughout the process of the design
and implementation of any alterations. The network consists of people with a
positive and open outlook, supporting broad consultation, supporting beauty
in the church, and supporting accessibility to spiritual experience. Only in
the unlikely eventuality of the church users feeling that their views are
being disregarded, would any formal objections be submitted, individually or
collectively, to the appropriate authorities. We're all for getting rid of
stale bathwater ; let's keep the baby too.
"If
anyone is interested in participating in this network, or simply in sharing
their views on the subject, call me on 863787 or Brian Edmond on
863201."

The First Annual Lyminge
Fun Run
In aid of the Lyminge School Building Fund
54 runners (well, some walked!)
completed the 5-mile course on Sunday 9 September in ideal conditions –
not too hot, but no rain either. It is fairly safe to say that everyone
enjoyed themselves, but our hats came off to Bunny Barker who completed the
course despite her back problem. The first man across the line was Andrew
Olsson from Acrise, the first lady was Jayne Meyer from Lyminge and the
first youngster was Dan Hunt-Cooke (also from Lyminge). Huge thanks
to Roy and Maureen Coping at Haxtons for all their help and for sponsoring
the event. The next fun run will be announced in the Newsletter very soon
– so that you all have plenty of opportunity for training!
The following email was received from
Jayne Meyer, the ladies’ winner:
"Thank you to Haxtons and to the
Parents and Friends of Lyminge School for organising the Lyminge Fun Run on
Saturday 9/9/01. My comments are quite possibly going to be biased as I did
win a trophy!! The event was a real treat, especially to have such a well
organised event and within the Village. I can’t promise that I will win
another trophy next year, but hope that this note will encourage all
villagers regardless of age and fitness to support this event next year.
Well done to all involved in organising the event."

The Speaker at our September
meeting was a Salvation Army band master, Richard Carrol. He spoke of the
very many events and activities they are involved with. Although their work
is serious, he had several humorous stories to tell us. It is amazing the
amount of work that goes on in the missing persons’ department. A most
informative afternoon. A very hard-working member, Jennie Holden was
congratulated on her Pearl Wedding Anniversary. The competition winner for
an old family document was Daphne Melrose.

The Editor is very
grateful to Duncan Harrington, a local historian, for producing the
following account of the history of Lyminge Park. This is the first
instalment of three pieces (and possibly more!). As Duncan says, gathering
information can be a continuous process and maybe other people have pieces
of information which fit into this jigsaw of historical knowledge. Any
comments can be directed to the Editor, who will pass the information on
(863197 or email liz.coleman@virgin.net).
Collections
towards a history - Lyminge Park.
by Duncan
Harrington
There is a great tendency
amongst local historians to collect information on the area and only to
publish something when all the facts and information have been gathered
together. This means that very little gets published and others clamber over
the same ground searching out the same material. This will not be the full
story and it is quite possible that you, the reader, will have further
knowledge which will add to the saga.
Edward Hasted, writing in 1790, says about
the parish of Liminge, "Near the southern boundary of the parish is the
estate and manor of Liminge park, which as well as Westwood, belongs to Mr
Sawbridge of Ollantigh, who has near 700 acres of woodland in this parish,
the whole of his estate here having been formerly appurtenant to the manor
of Liminge, and together with it, exchanged by Archbishop Cranmer with king
Henry VIII in his 31st year." [22 April 1539-21 April 1540].
The manor was originally amongst the possessions of the Abbey of Lyminge
founded by Ethelburga who married Edwin, king of Northumberland in 625. The
monastery appears to have been double, for men and women, as was often the
case in early times. Cuthbert, archbishop of Canterbury, is said in a
charter granted to it by Ethelbert, king of Kent, in 741 to have been abbot
there. Whilst a charter of Cynewulf, king of Mercia and Cuthred, king of
Kent in 804 is addressed to Selethrytha, abbess. Charters were also granted
by Wihtred, king of Kent in 694 and Ethelstan in 964. But little is known
about the monastery.
The monastery of Lyminge appears to have
suffered from the ninth century Viking raids because by 960, when St Dunstan
was Archbishop of Canterbury, the buildings were in a ruinous state of
repair. Certainly by the time that the Domesday was compiled we are told
that, the manor was held by the Archbishop himself.
The manor assessed at 7 sulungs had land for
60 ploughs (ploughlands). "On the demesne there are 4, and 101 villeins
with 16 bordars who have 55 ploughs. A church is there and 10 serfs and 1
mill worth 30 pence and 1 fishery yielding 40 eels and 30 acres of meadow
and wood land to render 100 swine. The value before 1066 was £24, later £40,
now the same; however, it pays £60. Of this manor three of the
archbishop’s men hold 2½ sulungs and ½ yoke; they have 5 ploughs on the
demesne, and 20 villeins with 16 bordars who have 5½ ploughs and 1 serf; 2
mills worth 7s 6d; 40 acres of meadow; wood to render 11 swine; 2 churches.
All this is worth £11."
The unit of assessment in Kent was the sulung
which was divided into 4 yokes. VCH, says that Vinogradoff established the
fact that the sulung was equal to 2 hides or about 200 acres.
