The Lyminge Association - A More Secure Future

Forty eight residents from the Parish of Lyminge were present at the Crisis Meeting held on 21 October at the Village Hall, and apologies were received from ten others, including various emails. The President, Mr. Bert Lewis gave a brief history of the Association and expressed his regret at the apparent lack of interest and support for the Association. Derek Hamer then opened the meeting for general discussion and the following suggestions were made:

  • Dissolving the existing Lyminge Association and the Lyminge Village Hall Committee (which is also suffering from a lack of support) and creating a new body to encompass both functions.
  • Creating a list of volunteers who would be willing to help occasionally, i.e. when special events were being organised.

Following discussion it was agreed that the possible amalgamation might be something to look at in the future. However, a list of volunteers was something which could be readily produced.

It was agreed that a new committee was needed and Mike Chisnell, Frances Nash, Paul & Debbie March, Mike Foxon, Tim Hill, Michael Wardell, Sheila Woods, Liz Coleman, Linda Willcox and Mary Bennett all volunteered their services. Consequently a meeting was arranged for Monday 9 November at 8.00pm at Lanfranc, when Committee Officers will be appointed.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the meeting, and to others who were unable to attend, but were concerned that the Association and the Newsletter should continue. With all the additional support and enth-usiasm we should go from strength to strength.

One thing the new Committee did agree upon straight away was that they believe in Father Christmas! The new Committee will shortly be in touch with the grand old man to ask him to visit Lyminge again a few days before Christmas in order to deliver parcels on behalf of villagers to their friends in the community. A date has not been set yet, nor have we asked our regular collecting points if they will do so again this year, but watch this space for full details next month!

This month's Newsletter is sponsored by David and Gill Broadley, of Lyminge Newsagents. The Lyminge Association is delighted to welcome them to Lyminge.

David and Gill Broadley have taken over Lyminge Newsagents from Peter and Janette Owen, who are moving to a new venture.

We aim to continue to provide the same good service that Peter and Janette have always provided including both village and rural paper rounds.

We wish Peter and Janette all the best for the future and look forward to a long and happy time here at LYMINGE NEWSAGENTS.

David and Gill Broadley.

Letters to the Editor

From Mrs. Teresa Wren

"I was very disappointed to read the Notice in the October Newsletter regarding "HE61 - Bridleway between North Lyminge and Shuttlesfield" and particularly the letter from Judy Woodbridge. "As a former horserider who has enjoyed the use of many bridlepaths in the past, I understand their advantages but I can confirm that as far as I can recall, the footpath in question has never been used by horses. Indeed, my husband who has lived in Lyminge all his life, clearly remembers climbing over stiles on the path as a child, which would indicate it was not being used by horses at that time (circa 1970).
"I believe that this type of notice, which portrays farmers as "the baddies" can only harm the relationship between farmers and "villagers". I particularly object to the statement in Judy Woodbridge's letter - "it seems most farmers dislike horses on their land" - and can confirm that this is totally untrue. They do, however, understandably object to their crops being used as areas for practising dressage manoeuvres and the like. I am sure that if riders would just stay on the paths and close gates behind them, there wouldn't be a problem.
"Unfortunately, the worst offenders of both footpath and bridlepath abuse appear to be newcomers to the area, who embrace country/village life with such enthusiasm but unfortunately have absolutely no idea of how to respect the countryside - for example: the person happily riding their hose across a field of newly planted wheat thinking it to be only grass.
"It is a pity that the Editor has presumed "the farmer" to be the bad guy in this case and allowed this type of notice to be published."

EDITOR'S NOTE In the past the Lyminge Newsletter has published letters on a number of contentious issues, but it does so with the strict understanding that the views expressed are not necessarily those of the Editor or the Association. The Association affirms that Parishioners may submit letters on any topic of local interest so long as the contents are not perceived to be vulgar or libellous. Every parishioner has a right of reply. The preface to Judy Woodbridge's letter was researched with the advice from the KCC Public Rights of Way Department. KCC have recently informed the Editor that the case has now been passed to the Secretary of State for the Environment.

From Mrs. Constance Buttler

"I have lived in Lyminge for almost 30 years and have always said what a wonderfully friendly village it is, so I was delighted to lean that it won the "Best Village" award.
"On the strength of this I would like to ask those villagers whose front gardens have trees and shrubs which overhang or encroach on the footpath to be kind enough to cut them back so that dodderers, like me, can keep to the footpaths without being poked and prodded or tripped by the greenery. I have encountered hazards in High Street, Canterbury Road, Church Road, Station Road and Brady Road. Thank you.
"P.S. The Newsletter is excellent and much appreciated. It is also greatly admired by my family living in places not nearly so well served."

EDITOR'S NOTE I know the Newsletter goes far and wide now, not just in this country but abroad. A number of people have told me that now the Newsletter is also available on Internet (see front cover for the address), their families are keeping in touch with our news via their computer screens. You may also be interested to know that the submission for the "Best Village in the Country" was completed and delivered at the beginning of October. Judges should be visiting Lyminge during November and the results will be announced in London in December.

Community News

By the time you read this there may be no local Community Police Officer for your area. All Parish Councils have been informed and if you have not yet heard, or seen the press release, the decision to withdraw Community Officers was made in order to implement the Crime and Disorder Bill, which will have implications on how we police communities in the future.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the 15 months in the area and have got to know a few of you. Much has been achieved; crime rates are down considerably, Neighbourhood Watch and Countryeye schemes are now extensive across the area and a good liaison has been built up between the Police and the Community. Thank you for all your support and encouragement in the past. I hope to have some contact with you in the future.
And finally, I completed the Three peaks Challenge in 10 hours and the total amount raised for the Kent Air Ambulance was in excess of £4,000. Best wishes, Richard Lester.

NOTE: The Parish Council was greatly saddened by this news as Richard's presence in the Community has been much appreciated. He was instrumental in setting up several of the Neighbourhood Watch Schemes and helped set up the Police Surgery in the Community Room in the Library. This will continue with our Parish Special Constable and specially trained volunteers. The Council has also written a number of letters of complaint.

Mrs. Margaret King
1893-1998

The family of Mrs. Margaret King would like to thank everyone in Lyminge of the kindness they have shown us during our sadness.

We would like to remember Mrs. King, as she was the oldest person living in Lyminge at the great age of 105. She was born in the Regents Park area of London and spent most of her life in the Greater London area. She was married to a policeman, who became a sergeant in the Metropolitan Police Force. In 1970 she moved with two of her sisters to the Silverlands Estate to be near her family. She was very active and until a few years ago, went out each day. She and her sisters were known as the "three ladies of Lyminge", as they went together round the village shops. We pay tribute to Mrs. Irene Morgan, who cared for her mother in recent years and will miss her dearly, as will the rest of the family.

Lyminge Baby and Toddler Group

Lyminge Baby and Toddler Group meets in term time in the Methodist Church hall, on a Tuesday morning from 9.00am to 11.00am (half an hour earlier than prev-iously). All babies and pre-school children and their mums, dads, grannies and carers are welcome. It costs £1.00 per family (first session free) which includes drinks and biscuits and a large selection of toys and activities.

Lyminge Library

Many thanks to the children of Lyminge School for the drawings and poems commemorating the 100th birthday of the St. Ethelburga Well. The banners too have been greatly admired. The exhibition during November will be a double bill, featuring paintings by Stephen Cross and Bert Lewis.

Lyminge Pre-School Playgroup

Editor's Note: The Pre-school recently underwent an OFSTED Inspection, the report of which was published at the end of September. The full report is available for any one who wishes to read it (please contact Lynn Hussey on 862831). The Staff and Management of the Pre-school are to be congratulated on the report; quite simply it is excellent. In recognition of the Pre-school's success, Michael Howard, Q.C., M.P. is to visit the Pre-school during November.

Even to summarise this lengthy document would take a number of pages, it is so detailed. Suffice to say, the Pre-school provides a well developed, balanced educational programme, which works effectively for children of all needs. And the children are very happy there!

Before she showed her slides on some beautiful gardens she gave us an insight to how money raised from the gardens helped towards nursing organisations such as the Marie Curie, Macmillan and others. The competition was a decorated bell. Mrs. Payne was first and her entry will go through to the group meeting which is on the 19th November.
