THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER

November 2003

Produced by
The Lyminge Association

Well, the editorship has doubled! As those of you who are familiar with me waddling around the village may be aware, I have managed to give birth to a lovely baby gin, somehow well timed between the October and November issues of the newsletter! As I sit here feeding her with one hand, wiping up sick with another and somehow still typing with one spare finger, I would like ask for forgiveness for any errors in this newsletter or unreturned phone calls and emails over the last few weeks, sleep deprivation and smelly nappies are to blame!
While we're on the subject of new little friends, I am looking for some extra help with the newsletter. Here's how it works at the moment, the articles are collected after the deadline each month and they go to Jean, who sorts out all the money, sends receipts, chases money owing and records everything etc. Then, everything comes to me to type up and arrange into the newsletter format and take to the printers. Well, I am not the fastest typist in the world (especially when holding a baby) so / spend many hours simply copy typing up all the articles. I have lots of ideas for more exciting features or articles of local interest etc. in the newsletter but simply don't have the time to do the research and put them into practise. I would also like more time to deal with enquiries and to experiment with the presentation and arrangement of the newsletter. So, my idea is to find someone who would be happy to simply type up the articles and then pass them on to me on a disc or via email, so that my time can be spent editing and arranging the newsletter, rather than typing. I think that, if you were good at typing, it would probably take just a couple of hours, once a month. It would be a good way to help with the newsletter, and would be a stress free job because you wouldn't have to deal with enquiries and phone calls etc. All you would need is a computer, not even necessarily email because a floppy disc would be fine. If you feel that you would like to help the newsletter team in this way, then please give me a ring to discuss it, on 862775. Thank you, Sarah Huntley

The Public Rights of Way Area Manager at Kent County Council
has submitted the following news item to the Newsletter

'New footpath link between Etchinghill and Lyminge'
'The existing footpath Which runs across the golf course between the two villages has recently had a new "alt weather" surface put on it thanks to the County Council. The work done under the 'Local Transport Plan' is aimed at improving access and the links between the two villages. It is particularly for the residents of Etchinghill to access the local services within Lyminge, whilst also encouraging you to walk (about 15min walk) rather than take the car. Walking offers a safer, cleaner and healthier alternative. Perhaps you could avoid the "school run' and the problems of parking, let alone the dangers, by walking to and from school, perhaps you could pick up the newspaper and reduce traffic congestion and improve your health at the same time. Or perhaps you just want to visit some friends. Equally, going in the other direction, there is of course the facilities the golf course and the public House in Etchinghill can offer. Or maybe you just want to take in the magnificent views that the path offers. The new surface also now opens up opportunities for the elderly and less abled (including wheelchairs, who may have found it difficult or impossible to use previously. Not forgetting the prams and buggies ! Please remember though, this is only a footpath, sorry but no cyclists or horses. Please also respect that the path crosses private land, keep to the marked path, keep you dog under control and clean up any mess. In order to secure funding for similar projects in the future it is important that schemes such as this are monitored. Mr A Hutchinson the Public Rights Of Way Area Manager of KCC would therefore welcome feedback on this route. He can be contacted on 01304 216307 or e-mail andrew.hutchinson@kent.gov.uk or write too Mezzanine Floor Maybrook House New Street Dover CT17 9AJ Andy Hutchinson Public Rights Of Way Area Manager (East Kent) Environmental Management

AGE CONCERN ELHAM RURAL
Ever heard of it? Well nearly 4,000 local residents have used the services. Age Concern provide for 'our' area since April this year. They come to the Jubilee Centre in Lyminge, brought in by volunteer drivers on specially designed mini-buses. At the Jubilee Centre they are able to get a fabulous meal, have their hair done, their feet done, even have a bath. Trained staff are there to care for them and help resolve any problems they may have. So why should you be interested? Well, this wonderful service is provided by Age Concern in y our area to people you know, aybe
even your relatives. The service gives you peace of mind, you know that the people who go to the Jubilee Centre are cared for, their concerns are addressed and often resolved. So, would you like to help?
I bet you have already guessed how. That's right, by giving money and/or time! Any money we receive will be used to offer day-care help to older people in the Elham Rural area. This area includes Lyminge, Etchinghill, Elham, Stanford, Seltindge, Monks Horton, Stowting, Densole, Acrise, Selsted, Elmsted, Lympne, Stelling Minnis, Rhodes Minnis and Postling. And thanks VERY MUCH!

Gardening Tips for November
Those with green houses now find that the gardening has been
transferred inside. Clear any summer debris from the greenhouse and
disinfect the glass and surfaces. Line the interior with either bubble
plastic or make a tent with fleece and move tender plants in. Grey mould
is a problem in the winter so keep watering to a minimum and water soil,
not foliage. Even on the coldest of days vents can be opened a little in
the middle of the day to allow air to circulate. For the more hardy
gardener, November is a good month to dig over beds and borders. For
the really lazy gardener, seed catalogues can be studied at length!

All entries must be paid for by time of publication. 12 months for the price of 10 are available if booked in advance. The front page of the newsletter can be sponsored for £30. All business advertisers must either live in or trade from the distribution area of the newsletter i.e. be able to provide a home or business address in the Lyminge, Etchinghill, Postling. or Rhodes Minnis area. A mobile business based outside of the area but which could operate here as part of its work. e.g a tradesman based in Folkestone, would not fit this criteria.
