THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER
November 2002
Produced by
The Lyminge Association
We are pleased to announce that plans are
underway to invite Father Christmas to make an early visit to our Parish
once more! He has agreed to visit on Sunday 22 December, with a
4.30pm start. If you would like to arrange for him to call on your
friends and family, all you have to do is wrap your presents for delivery,
label them clearly (the gnomes need to read the labels in the dark!) and
then deliver them to either Stennings Insurance in Station Road, the Coach
and Horses, or Liz Coleman at Sunny Cottage, Canterbury Road (behind the
Newsagents). Parcels MUST be delivered to one of these points by
Saturday 21 December. You can send as many parcels as you like
to one address at 80p per address. We will do our best to
accommodate small children’s bedtimes – please let us know.
Please also give clear instructions if the house is not easy to find
(especially in the dark!). Any queries, please ring Liz on 863197 or
Linda on 862699. Don’t forget – Father Christmas delivers to
grown-ups too!!

A LYMINGE VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE EVENT

If you are planning a private firework party on a day other than 5
November, please let your neighbours know so that they can ensure their
animals are kept indoors
Fire Safety
With the pending national strikes by the Fire and Rescue Services,
please can I ask that extra care is taken at home and in the work place.
With Bonfire night celebrations and parties coming up, please consider
going to an organised event to lessen the chance of a bonfire getting out
of control in the home environment
Fraud Scam
The Devon and Cornwall Constabulary Fraud Squad is warning people
in its Force area to ignore a spate of letters from West Africa that ask
for financial assistance in supplying food and clothing. Those who have
donated cheques have found their bank details passed on to others and cash
transferred. This sort of scam has also hit people in Kent and is being
monitored by officers at Force Headquarters at Maidstone. Similar scams
and requests for money have also been received by E-mail users and that
includes myself. It is my advice that you do not respond to these requests
even though the promise, in some cases, of large cash returns might sound
tempting. If you receive any e-mails of this nature please forward them
onto myself so that I can send them to my colleagues in Maidstone. Email:

Winter Motoring
Now that the weather is changing and the nights are drawing in it
is perhaps the right time to make checks on your vehicles. Simple
maintenance can make driving more comfortable and can prevent breakdowns.
Tyres: Check the wear and tear of the whole tyre and ensure that
the tread is within the legal limits. Ensure that the tyre pressures are
set at the manufactures recommended levels. Both tread depth and tyre
pressure are vital for good water displacement and road handling.
Windscreens , washer bottles and wiper blades: Give all of
your windows a thorough clean inside and out to maximise visibility at
night, in bad rain and in the low laying winter sun. Keep your washer
bottles topped up with a proprietary washing solution that has an
anti-freeze agent in it. Ensure that your wiper blades are in good
condition and are up to the job for winter.
Engine oils, coolants and batteries: Check the level of the oil on
a weekly basis and top up with the manufacturers recommended oil. Ensure
that the coolant levels are topped up and contain the recommended mixtures
of anti-freeze- this is one of the major causes of vehicle breakdown and
can be costly if left unchecked. Ensure that all connections on the
battery terminals are tight and that where appropriate the fluid levels
are right.
Lights: Ensure that all bulbs are working and that lamp lenses are
kept clean to maximise light distribution onto the road. Respect other
road users by only using front and rear fog lamps when absolutely
necessary.
These are just a few simple checks that any motorist should
be capable of doing but if in any doubt then advice and guidance should be
sought from a garage or motoring organisation. Many garages offer free
winter checks and top ups, so it is worth keeping an eye out for adverts
in the local press etc.
REMEMBER! Failure to carry out some of these checks
and to maintain your vehicle in a roadworthy condition not only
presents a danger to yourself and others but could also render you
liable to prosecution!
Community Service
By the time that you get to read this, we are hoping that
offenders sentenced to community service work will have made a start on
various projects in Lyminge. The team, consisting of 8-10 low risk
offenders and a supervisor, is due to have started on Saturday 19th
October with an initial tidy up around the village hall and also some of
the footpaths around the village. At the present time we have their
services available to us on Saturdays for six months. Projects in Lyminge
include the redecoration of the scout hut, the village hall and the
village school. Projects are also set up for Elham and Etchinghill but to
keep the team busy for six months we need more ideas. These projects
should ideally be for the benefit of the community at large but all
requests and ideas will be considered. Residents from anywhere
within the distribution area of either newsletters are invited to
contact Tessa or myself with their suggestions.. The team will provide all
of the labour and equipment but all building/decorating materials such as
paint must be provided at the outset of the project. The only things that
they cannot deal with are mains gas, electricity and water for obvious
safety reason but otherwise most things should be achievable.
Speeding in the villages.
This continues to be a problem and concern of many residents. It
is perhaps interesting to note that in recent speed checks carried out by
myself, a significant percentage of those stopped and spoken to were
residents from within the valley area!
Parking outside of schools.
Several complaints have been received about motorists leaving their
vehicles on the yellow zig-zag lines on Church Road in Lyminge and on
Canterbury Road at Elham whilst dropping off or picking up children from
school. The lines are there for the benefit and safety of children. The
Highway Code states that vehicles should not be parked on these lines. It
also constitutes an offence of causing an unnecessary obstruction which
can result in a fixed penalty notice being issued or a summons to the
local magistrates court. Please bear this in mind!
Keep well, be safe.

Bus shelters
The Parish Council has been pursuing Shepway District Council about the
poor state of bus shelters in the parish. Shepway DC has recently
renovated the Rhodes Minnis shelter, but the shelters at Canterbury Road
and New Barn remain in a very poor state. Pippa Hope has taken photos of
the shelters; these have been forwarded to Shepway DC to emphasise the
need for action.
Speeding traffic
Alan Boughton and Edgar Taylor had a site meeting at Wentworth Close with
Rural Warden Tessa Bedwell and a highways engineer, to discuss ways of
discouraging speeding through Lyminge.
Open country
The Parish Council applied to the Countryside Agency for various tracts of
land to be classified as “open country”, which is one category of
“access land”. The Countryside Agency accepted most of the Parish
Council’s suggestions.
Part I of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 grants a general
right of access to the public to “access land” for the purposes of
open-air recreation. The new rights are mainly for access on foot. You can
find out more by going to www.countryside.gov.uk/access/mapping.
The site explains the new legislation, and has maps which show open
country and common land areas. You can view local maps by clicking on
“see the maps in your area”, and then entering your postcode.
The maps are still draft, and landowners can appeal against the
classification of their land. The public access rights are not due to come
into force until 2005.
Kent Highways website
At www.kent.gov.uk/highways
you can report problems with potholes, street lighting, etc by clicking on
“use the online fault reporting service”.
The Parish Council will be meeting on 25th November at 7.30
pm in Lyminge Village Hall.

Do you know that BT are running a system
whereby if a sufficient number of people register an interest in Broadband
via their ISP, they will give a very serious consideration to an upgrade
of that local exchange? What this means is that when your enquire as
to the availability of Broadband in your area, and are told that it is not
available, you need to follow through and register an interest to add to
that total and thus the likelihood of gaining Broadband in your area.
The future for those of us in rural areas is very much in our own hands
– the moral is register now – it does not commit you to anything, but
will boost the changes of everyone on your exchange. So even if you
have only the remotest inclination to go to Broadband, pre-register now
via your ISP. One a certain level of enthusiasm is shown BT will set
a trigger level, above which there is a very high probability of the
exchange being enabled. The trigger level depends on the anticipated
cost of converting the exchange in question.

Dramatic Society – Arabian Nights
In December we are performing an exciting new version of
the classical tales of the “Arabian Nights.” This play
was originally performed at The Young Vic in London before
transferring to the Edinburgh Festival where it obtained
rave reviews. The stories are told with the help of music,
puppets and plenty of action. The production will take
place at Lyminge Village Hall. Evening performances
commence at 7.45pm and there will be a matinee on Saturday
at 4pm. Senior Citizens are welcome free of charge to the
dress rehearsal on Tuesday 3rd December at
7.45pm. Tickets will go on sale at Haxtons Estate Agents
in Lyminge from Saturday 16th November.
As reported last month, we are purchasing tiered staging
with the help of a Community Fund grant. This will enable
us to create raised seating on different levels in the
hall providing much improved viewing for our audiences. At
the same time the Village Hall committee are purchasing
more comfortable seating as part of the same grant. We are
aiming to have both available for Arabian Nights.

Our members laughed and laughed at Paul
Harris’ tales of Pantomime. The Church Parlour at
Lyminge Methodist Church was mentally transformed to
theatre land and what a good time we all had. Paul talked
us through the quirky movements needed to provide us with
well remembered Mother Goose and it needed no imagination
to see him as a Panto Dame.
Lyn Callander told members of her well remembered day as a
“Pig”, marching the streets of London during a
memorable wet and windy Lord Mayor’s parade and the slap
up dinner provided by the sponsors on the way home – a
bag of crisps and a can of Coca Cola! Much laughter ensued
especially when Lyn disclosed that the track suits
provided had not been colourfast and she and her husband
were coloured blue and turquoise for the next week!
Our next meeting will be our AGM on
November 13th when our new committee will be elected and a
short business meeting held. Before the meeting a
representative of Hope Romania will come along and be
presented with the many pairs of mittens that members have
knitted during the year. These are being displayed on a
“Mitten Tree” – do come along and have a look.
New members and visitors are always
welcome. Our meetings are interesting and varied and offer
something for everyone.
If you need further information or a lift please ring Lyn
Callander on 862799.

Minnis Evening Circle
At the October meeting, we were given an
outstanding talk by Jayne Meyer Tucker on Sure Start
Dover, a very lively and enthusiastic speaker. Jayne
spoke about the start of the service and how they help
families in the Dover area, looking at the needs of
pre-school age children, assisting in guiding/educating
the parent/s, to give their children a better start in
life, which they may not have had. We left the
meeting with a feeling of great respect for Jayne and her
staff and a feeling of confidence that they are achieving
their goals, in an extremely difficult job.
In this month’s competition of A Joke, Joan Tatton
received first prize and Marion Hoare second. I am
pleased to record that both were very tasteful.
On 27 September, we boarded the Waverley, and sailed, or
should I say paddled, up the Thames to Tower Pier. The
only down side was the crew did not expect the great
number of people who turned up at Folkestone and they ran
out of sandwiches. We were extremely lucky with the
weather and had a most glorious day out
Etchinghill
W.I.
On Tuesday 15 October we held a tea party at the
Village Hall, Lyminge, it being our 80th
birthday party. Members from other W.I.’s were
also invited. We were entertained by a group of
ladies who were called “the Marsh Warblers”, who sang
and performed sketches which we found very enjoyable.
The competition this month was won by Jenny Holden with
her photograph of a Romney Marsh Church.

Lyminge Pre-School Playgroup
A safe and welcoming place for your child to make friends,
play, learn and make a smooth transition to school, with
which we have a very close liaison. Every session is
supervised by trained and experienced staff.
Sessions take place weekdays during term-time at Lyminge
Village Hall, 9.00am – 12 noon (or 1.00pm – the
additional hour is optional and a packed lunch should be
provided). The standard session is £5.50 and the
extended session is £7.00. Children may start from
2½ years old.
The Playgroup is a member of the Pre-school Learning
Alliance and meets standards set by KCC and OFSTED.
The most recent, excellent OFSTED report stated, “…In
this thriving Playgroup the children are making good
progress towards the Early Learning Goals. There is
a strong partnership with parents and carers which
contributed positively to the children’s good
progress.”

With the onset of the first frosts all tender plants
should be under cover. Wrap a layer of bubble wrap plastic
around the containers of any hardy plants left outside. This
will help prevent the compost from freezing and damaging the roots.
Have fleece hand to throw over them in a prolonged cold spell.
When clearing the garden you may well
come across the pearl-like clusters of slug and snail eggs.
Expose them to the air and the frost will kill them off.
Recent research has shown that slugs
and snails are allergic to coffee, it is perhaps worth making up a
weak solution and watering it over an area of the garden and seeing
what happens.
I gathered up a bundle of leaves only
to discover a sleeping hedgehog in the middle. Do check for
any of these useful creatures before lighting bonfires.
