FATHER
CHRISTMAS COMES TO LYMINGE!
We
are pleased to announce that plans are underway to invite Father Christmas
to make an early visit to our Parish once more! He has agreed to visit
on Saturday 22 December, starting slightly earlier than before, at 4.00pm.
If you would like to arrange for him to call on your friends and family, all
you have to do is wrap your presents for delivery, label them clearly (the
gnomes need to read the labels in the dark!) and then deliver them to either
Stennings Insurance in Station Road, the Coach and Horses, or Liz Coleman at
Sunny Cottage, Canterbury Road (behind the Newsagents). Parcels
MUST be delivered to one of these points by Thursday 20 December. You
can send as many parcels as you like to one address at 80p per address.
We will do our best to accommodate small children’s bedtimes – please
let us know. Please also give clear instructions if the house is not
easy to find (especially in the dark!). Any queries, please ring Liz
on 863197 or Linda on 862699. Don’t forget – Father Christmas
delivers to grown-ups too!!
Newsletter deliverers – please let us know on 863192 when you are away –
and please (if you can) ask a friend to do your delivery for you.
If
you are planning a private firework party on a day other than 5 November,
please let your neighbours know so that they can ensure their animals are
kept indoors
Parish
Council News
In
an effort to avoid the flooding we experienced last winter, the Parish
Council has been working to improve the condition of the watercourses in the
Parish. Letters have been sent to all the riparian owners reminding
them of their responsibilities to maintain their section of the watercourse.
The Parish Council has set up a working party to clear the sections of the
stream that are their responsibility and Shepway District Council is
carrying out maintenance work to the culverts and drains.
Whilst
every effort is being made to improve the river flow through the Parish and
so reduce the risk of flooding, if we do experience very heavy rain fall we
may find ourselves in the same position that we were in last year. We
need to be prepared. Every household needs to take responsibility for
itself in the event of a flood. Shepway District Council and the
Environment Agency have issued advice in the local press on flood emergency
kits and the Parish Council endorses this advice. Part of that advice
is to ensure that you have sufficient sandbags to protect your property.
The Parish Council is looking into providing sandbags and sand for all
affected properties. If you would like us to supply you with sandbags,
please contact the Clerk to the Parish Council on 862607 and let him know,
as soon as possible, how many you will require.
In
conjunction with the Environment Agency, the Parish Council is hoping to set
up an early Flood Warning System. Hopefully, there will be more news about
this in next month’s Newsletter.
Councillor
Barchi was as the September meeting and spoke about the new political
arrangements at Shepway District Council, including a cabinet with executive
powers to make decisions on behalf of the council as a whole, with a
Scrutiny Panel to check and challenge the workings of cabinet. The
Scrutiny Panel is carrying out a review of the planning and development
control services: the Parish Council will be making its views known to the
review.
Wheelie
bins are being introduced in Shepway (we're one of the few districts across
the country which have yet to introduce them). We in Lyminge Parish are due
to get ours next Spring. The Parish Council are expecting a briefing from
Shepway District Council early next year.
Shepway
District Council is publishing its ten-year Local Plan for the area, which
covers designations for land use. The Plan has sections on Sustainable
Development, Housing, Employment, Shopping, Tourism, Leisure and Recreation,
Built Environment, Utilities, Transport, Countryside, and Folkestone Town
Centre. The plan has been published for consultation: you can see a copy at
the Civic Centre in Folkestone.
Saplings
planted by children from Lyminge School to celebrate the Millennium are to
be replanted in the church yard.
The
Parish Council has written to Stagecoach asking for their comments on the
complaints that have been made about the school bus service.
On
the night of 4 October there were at least five acts of vandalism along
Longage Hill, culminating in the theft of a 4’ statue from a secured
garden (the thieves broke down the fence to get it). It was carried by
the 3/4 youths involved as far as Home Farm, where, when residents
confronted them, they abandoned the statue in the road. This was at
12.15am. It was only discovered the next morning. If a vehicle
had struck this substantial piece of concrete during the night, the
consequences could well have been fatal, particularly if it had involved a
motorcycle. This is not the first case of vandalism in recent weeks.
The favourite vandalism seems to be breaking and removing house name signs.
As these are the only way to find an address in Longage Hill, these items
are essential, particularly for the emergency services. It is not only
an inconvenience and expense that elderly residents can ill afford, but
potentially a matter of life and death in an emergency situation. The
Police are investigating the incidents which have been reported to them, but
please let your Neighbourhood Watch Scheme know if you have been affected.
If you find other peoples’ house names of property in your verge or
garden, please hang on to it until the owner is found.
The
next meeting of the Parish Council will be on 26 November, at 7.30 pm in
Lyminge Village Hall.

Letters
to the Editor
Adrian
Hackford reports that there has been considerable reaction to the letter
from Brian Edmund and himself in the October issue of the Newsletter.
He has collated all the responses and has sent the collation to the Lyminge
Parochial Church Council. A copy has been placed in the Library.
Two further letters on the subject of re-ordering the interior of the Parish
Church are given overleaf.
If
you have an opinion on this subject and wish to express it, please contact
the Parochial Church Council direct. (Letters to Lanfranc, High
Street, Lyminge. Telephone 862345.
From: Jenny Tomlinson, Church Warden, on behalf of Lyminge PCC
Proposed
re-ordering of the interior of Lyminge Parish Church
The
letter from Adrian Hackford in last month’s newsletter raises important
issues. We are delighted to see concerned for the church expressed so
publicly. What happens to the church should matter very much to the
local community. We endorse entirely the concern that any changes made
should enhance the church aesthetically and not detract from what is by any
standards an exceptionally fine historic and spiritually uplifting building
for the worship of God.
The
current process of consultation is intended to draw in all those who feel
strongly that the church should continue to serve the local community.
We are sorry if some felt excluded by the invitation in September’s
Newsletter. It was meant to convey our belief that change is
inevitable. Our choice is whether to take positive steps to affect the
future or let events take their course.
We
want the village church to be a living church, serving the needs of the
community as it has done over fourteen centuries. During this time the
church has constantly changed to meet changing needs and if we are to remain
true to this heritage we should explore how we can respond to contemporary
needs, just as our predecessors did in their time.
For
those who, for whatever reason, were unable to come and see the exhibition
in the church in September, there will be two more opportunities, in church,
in November. The first is on Thursday 22 November from 7.30pm to 9.00pm
and the second is on Sunday 25 November from 3.00pm to 4.30pm.
On each occasion there will be an introduction to the exhibition from the
Lyminge Parochial Church Council (PCC) Space Working Group, followed by an
opportunity for discussion and questions. Refreshments will be
provided. Everyone is welcome.
From: Glen Floyd Esq.
Re:
Progress or vandalism?
I,
along with many villagers, am horrified by the recently reported news of the
plans to remove pews, choir stalls, the church organ, and erect partitions
in OUR Parish Church.
We
were told in September that we were not welcome to any discussions if we
dared to have an alternative point of view. A small minority of the Parish
decided to make major changes to OUR Parish Church and if anyone objected,
well, tuff! We are all custodians of this integral part of the Parish
and as such have a duty to preserve OUR Parish Church for future
generations. I may only use the Church at Christmas and possibly my funeral
but it still remains MY Church too.
If
the current decision-takers do not wish to hear organ music then fine, but
where is the sense in tearing it out? Villagers probably worked hard
to fund this organ and the pews. If this current proposal is allowed
to go ahead, what’s next? Maybe pebbledash the exterior, place neon
lights on the tower, remove the bells to name but a few.
Please think again, this
is not the way forward. May I suggest that you ask why people have
left the congregation in recent times and act in a more representative way
to the majority of the Parish and one of the most important buildings of the
Parish?

The Box Office opens at G.W. Finn and Son, Lyminge on Saturday 27
October for our lavish production of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s “The

young couples and complications in events lead to comic deception and
misunderstandings.
The production will run from Wednesday 21st to Saturday 24th
November in Lyminge Village Hall, commencing at 7.45pm and is not to be

October 16th was our 79th birthday meeting.
Members from the Nailbourne Group were invited to our party. Mrs Woolf,
who has been in amateur dramatics for many years, told of her experiences in
various productions. She sang four well-known songs. A most
“entertaining afternoon”! We then had a delicious tea.
Audrey Kirk, being our most senior member, cut the cake made by Jill Le Cras.
Daphne Melrose was the competition winner.

The
BHS and Horse and Hound Safety Ride/Walk
A big thank you to all the riders and walkers who took part on
Sunday 14 October. The ride was reasonably well supported with riders
coming from as far a field as Waltham, and walkers from Dover and Folkestone.
It was a shame that more riders from Lyminge didn’t take part, as none of
the major yards in the area were represented….maybe next year. All
of the horses were well behaved… (poetic licence used here for Judy!!) and
all the adults and children enjoyed themselves.
May we also take this opportunity to thank all the drivers that slowed down
and took leaflets, and also to the Village Hall for use of the car park and
to the Kings Arms at Elham for providing us with drinks at the half-way
stage.
On a more serious note, we would also like to mention that one of the
walkers was actually hit by a car as we came out of Elham, just past the
Police houses. She was not badly hurt, just bruised and shaken, but
the car did not even stop and the elderly couple in it carried on oblivious.
It went to prove what a real danger being on the road is for all of us.
Drivers remember to give horses a wide berth on the roads and slow
down to around 15mph. Don’t use your horn before you go around
bends, other car drivers can’t hear you and it scares the horses.
Riders remember to wear fluorescent or hi-vis gear, have adequate
insurance, wear hard hats and be courteous to drivers at all times.

Gardening
Jobs for November
The hard work in the garden is coming to an end with just a few more
jobs to do before sinking into an armchair and thinking about next year’s
gardening. Plant tulip bulbs early in the months, also lilies between
now and April. Lay turf on pre-prepared soil. Plant bare-rooted roses,
also apple and pear trees. Start thinking about frost protection for
plants left outside in the ground and in pots. Insulated the
greenhouse. For the past few years I have found that a ”tent
structure” made from fleece inside the greenhouse works very well and
doesn’t sweat like bubble pack tends to do.

Sabre
Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our
own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of
being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the
fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding
Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating.
So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u
would look out of place, think again! Maintenance free,
sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and
decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on
the market. Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both
in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see
one!
