Etchinghill Residents' Association - Annual General Meeting

Friday 10 November 8.00pm in Etchinghill Village Hall

ALL residents of Etchinghill are members of the Association, so please come along to what will be a fairly informal occasion where you will be able to meet fellow 'villagers' and, perhaps, learn something new about your village. A new committee will be elected. The role of a committee member is far from onerous, so if you feel you would like to be involved, but need to know a little more, then please 'phone Wendy on 863495. Your present committee looks forward to welcoming you at the meeting.

Lyminge Historical Society - "Lyminge Parish Through The Ages"

The Society wishes to thank all those persons, about 800 in total, from within and around the Parish, Kent generally and afar, who visited our Exhibitions in August. Visitors came from the Counties of Gloucester, Shropshire, Warwick, Dorset, Cornwall, Hants, Berkshire, Cambridge and Lincoln, as well as from Sussex, Surrey, Essex, and London. Their appreciation of our productions was overwhelmingly recorded with numerous superlatives in the Visitors Book by 330 persons and by the orders for copies of photographs on display, some 116 during the Exhibition alone.

All this despite the various break-downs in publicity, including the failure of local and regional media to remember our Press Releases, and our own District Council, one of our principal sponsors (no less!), which failed to include a mention in its August 'What's On'. Even Kent Radio only caught-up with our notice when we had begun the Rhodes Minnis event and then tailed-off for the subsequent venues. Many locals failed to note the events advertised in a leaflet delivered to their doors with the Lyminge Newsletter and have been asking others since when and where they took place.

However, it was heartening to observe the time that some younger people took in studying the photos of yesteryear and the comparative maps of a century and more apart. It was rewarding to witness the camaraderie among older parishioners who had not seen each other for 25-30 years, and one pair for about 60 years(!). In conclusion, we wish to thank all who contributed considerable donations to our funds and to those who purchased our exclusively printed picture notelets of 1900 Lyminge (now on sale at the Post Office).

Lyminge Dramatic Society - December Production

Rehearsals are in full swing for our next production, a play based on Kenneth Grahame's masterpiece of children's literature, "Wind in the Willows". The play was written by Alan Bennett, known to many for his televised playlets, "Talking Heads". The play, first performed at the National Theatre in 1990, remains faithful to the events of this classic story of riverside life. However, Bennett's own brand of humour and dialogue are never far away and make this a play to be enjoyed by adults as well as children. The music is written by Jeremy Sams. The production will be performed from Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th December in Lyminge Village Hall and includes a matinée on Saturday afternoon. Tickets are priced at £5.00 adults and £2.50 children and there will be a limited number of seats available free of charge to Senior Citizens for Tuesday 5th December, which must be collected at the box office as normal. Please indicate clearly to the box office that you require the Senior Citizen free seats. Badges of your four favourite characters will also be available on sale with the tickets. Why not collect the complete set of four?

The box office opens on Saturday 11 November at G.W. Finn and Sons, Estate Agents.

Garden Hints for November

November is a time for tidying. Gather up fallen leaves and store them in plastic bin liners, with holes pieced into the dies. Tie up the tops loosely and the resulting leaf mould will be ready for use next summer. Repair lawns with turves and cut back log growth on shrubs and roses to prevent wind damage through the winter.

Tulips, bare-rooted roses and apple and pear trees can be planted, also lilies between now and April. Protect pots left outside for the winter with sacking or bubble plastic and line greenhouses against frost. A double layer of fleece, thrown over plants in the greenhouse will work wonders and save on heating costs.
