You have to vote for TWO people.

The Lyminge Parish Council has been elected uncontested; two people came forward to fill the two vacancies. Thus the Parish Council will be; Alan Boughton, Des Boughton, Peter Brockett, Liz Coleman, Roy Copping, Stephen Cross, Bob Gay, Derrick Hamer, Phillipa Hope, Patsy Philip, Edgar Taylor, Janet Turner, and Bernard Wood.

CONGRATULATIONS TO LYMINGE FOOTBALL TEAM!

On Sunday 25 April Lyminge Football Team beat the team from Swingfield in the Final at Hythe to win the Orion Cup! It was a close thing! Until the last ten minutes Lyminge trailed two goals to nil, gaining two before full time. Despite extra time, the score remained at 2:2, so a sudden death penalty shoot out decided the match, the score eventually being 7:6. Mark Hayley was the hero who scored the winning penalty. Word has it that this is the first time in about 20 years since the team has won a cup! Well done!! The cup will be displayed at the Coach & Horses, along with a team photograph

The team would like to thank all their loyal supporters, their sponsors, T. Southern and Sons, the Parish Council for providing such a magnificent home pitch, and the village hall for the use of the facilities during the season.

A Message from the Sponsors.....

Congratulations and well done to all the players, and those associated with Lyminge Football Team, for their achievement this season! Well done lads - winning the League Division Cup is a good finish to the season!

From Denise and Peter Southern and family at T. SOUTHERN AND SON, SOLID FUEL MERCHANT.

VALLEY CARNIVAL
Getting the show on the road!

A new community carnival will be held in Lyminge on Sunday 6 June 1999. This is an event for the whole valley to be involved in. Workshops to make costumes, images and music are already being held with local schools and youth groups. Now it's YOUR turn! Open workshops will be held during the week leading up to the Carnival. They will be open from 10.00am - 12 noon, 2.00pm - 4.00pm and 6.00pm - 8.00pm and will be held at:
St. Mary's Hall, Elham on Monday 31st May and Tuesday 1st June
Lyminge Methodist Hall on Wednesday 2nd, Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th June.
Everyone is welcome to come and make their own amazing, colourful costumes, colourful floats or join in the music workshops. Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Come and take part in this exciting new event for our area. It is envisaged that this will become an annual event taking place throughout the valley. The Carnival is being arranged by the Elham Valley Lions in collaboration with The Whole Hog Celebratory Arts. For further details, contact The Whole Hog Celebratory Arts on 862236 or Bill Tate of the Lions on 862264.

The Millennium Committee Report

The Raffle

Thank you very much to everyone who has been buying the raffle tickets. If you still have your book on the sideboard, windowsill, notice board, or what ever, please take the stubs and the money to Haxton's Estate Agents. If you do not want to enter the raffle, please take the entire book back to Haxton's. Haxton's and the Library have more books of tickets if you would like to increase your chances of winning one of the wonderful prizes (a full list will be given in next month's Newsletter), or if you can sell them to friends and family. This will be one of our major sources of funding for the series of events planned for the year 2000. The raffle will be drawn on Saturday 19 June at Lyminge School.

Mugs

A limited number of souvenir mugs (handmade stoneware by Laugharne Pottery) has been acquired. They are rather smart! They have a deep blue glaze on the inside and a matt biscuit colour on the outside, which depicts the Lyminge logo (see the front page of the Newsletter) and the words, "Lyminge, celebrating the Millennium" (in blue). They are on sale for £4.50 each, or £40.50 for ten (buy in bulk for Christmas presents or for your club or society!). They will be available at Lyminge Day, The Ethelburga Fête and the raffle draw, or they can be purchased from Honor and Dave Hunt-Cooke, Catherine Hughes, Linda Willcox and Liz Coleman, but don't delay, buy today!

The Historical Society

Old Photographs Competition

Firstly, many thanks to all those persons who have loaned to us photographs of old Lyminge Parish people, views and buildings for entry to our Competition and selection for display in our proposed Millennium Exhibition next year. In addition to loans by local citizens, we have received photos from former residents now in Cheriton, Folkestone, Canterbury, ham Street and as far afield as the Isle of Man. Now comes the problem of selecting those for display and, more difficult, choosing the winners of the various groups. The quantity loaned is quite enormous and overwhelming, and the selections will take us at least two months to complete before releasing them to the Photographer for enlarging and mounting. All lenders can be assured that great care is being taken of the photos, which will be returned to them in due course. If any more photos should come to light in the next few weeks, we shall be pleased to consider them for display, although, understandably, they would not be eligible for the Competition.

Lyminge Parish Through the Ages

This is to be theme of our Exhibition which, subject to receiving grants from the various authorities, we aim to display in Lyminge, Etchinghill and Rhodes Minnis during late Summer 2000. As well as photos, we hop to include exhibits of old maps with interesting facts on the history and development of the Parish and on our ancestors' activities within the Parish. Any comments or queries please to Bob Gay on 862574.

A FULL LIST OF MILLENNIUM EVENTS WILL BE PUBLISHED NEXT MONTH.

Parish Council News - Highways and Byways

A Walk in the Woods

Esso are backing a nationwide "Walk in the Woods". The idea is to take a walk in a wood and think about the future...and the past. Events will take place during May and a list is available on the website www.newsnet-21.org.uk The Forestry Trust is producing a series of books listing woodlands to visit during the month and at other times (contact 01734 323523).

On the other hand, why not walk in a wood that's on your doorstep! Bernie Wood's monthly Parish Walk will be through Lyminge Forest. Starting from the Rhodes Minnis Village Hall car park at 10.00am, it takes place on Sunday 16 May.

Pot-holing

Pot holes in the road was one of the topics discussed at a recent ward meeting of the parish councils of Stone Street Ward. The Shepway D.C. Highway Engineer took a list of the problems concerning all our local roads, including potholes, signs, traffic calming and footpaths. Hopefully, these will be attended to within the constraints of their budget.

If you wish to report a new pothole or a highway problem, an officer will be in the Shepway D.C. caravan, parked near the Library, from 12.00pm - 1.00pm on the first Friday of each month.

Letters to the Editor

The Editor welcomes letters to the Editor, but requests that they AND ANY OTHER ITEMS FOR THE NEWSLETTER should be less than 200 words. Anything longer is likely to be edited.

From Katie Guy

Dear Sir,

"A few weeks ago I read that Lyminge is recognised as a 'friendly' village where trouble is taken to welcome and care for its residents, including the "immigrants" into the village. From personal experience I can endorse this description and I am grateful to be able to live here.

"But oh dear! - I'm sorry there has to be a big "but" - I do find the village dirty and carelessly treated. We have experienced high winds which 'lift' the paper litter, but we are responsible for dropping and leaving it initially. The area between the carpet shop and the site of the old P.C.'s house is extremely untidy. Perhaps more litter bins would help, but surely the buck stops with each one of the people who are fortunate enough to live in friendly Lyminge. The gardens around are so lovely and cared for; they are a joy to see and enjoy. Can we add, green, pleasant and "tidy" to the so-rightly described, 'friendly' Lyminge? It is up to us, or as you say in Kent - "down to us"."

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR THE TESCO VOUCHERS - WE'VE ENOUGH FOR A NEW COMPUTER!
Lyminge School

From Janet Turner

Dear Editor,

"It is sad that Lyminge, having won the Best Village in Kent award, with particular regard to the facilities for the younger people, a small group of youngsters seem intent on wrecking their environment.

"The school caretaker has to regularly retrieve the 3 litter containers, upturned by these young people and gather up the rubbish spilled out alongside the school. Other residents and I, daily gather up bottles, cans and paper left around Tayne Field and by the basketball court. This morning I noted that one of the young Silver Birches at the school perimeter had been torn off about 4 feet from the ground; notices are ripped off boards and thrown about; flowers are uprooted from gardens and public benches are destroyed.

"I invite the few young people involved, through this publication, to enlighten the village as to why they seem intent on spoiling what others enjoy and take pride in, and what satisfaction is achieved. 'There's nothing to do' is not an excuse for vandalism. 99% of young people in the area seem to find more than enough to do to occupy their time constructively."

Reports

Lyminge Library

Thank you to Lyminge School for loaning us one of the two school banners and Class 5's patchwork, which were one display for the first two weeks in April and to Liz Coleman for the patchwork quilts on show for the second part of the month. Both exhibitions were greatly admired by the library users and others who call in regularly to see the monthly displays.

The boards are free during July, September, October, November and December at no charge, so why not take the opportunity to advertise your club or society or for the artistically inclined, mount a display or paintings or handicraft?

Etchinghill W.I.

Mrs. Syrett organised a very successful jumble sale on the morning of the 27th March in Etchinghill Village hall. Thank you Barbara.

Lyminge Senior Citizens' Club

We had a quiet moment thinking about one of our original members, who recently passed away, Janis Porter. We would also like to say thank you to the parish Council for a donation towards new cups and saucers for our club. We very much appreciated it. Thank you very much.
Dorothy Bain.

Lyminge W.I.

At our meeting on April 13th, our speaker was unable to come, so we had an afternoon of discussion on the Millennium and what people thought about it.

The Plight of the Beachborough Toad Colony

The toad migration at Beachborough is complete for another year. From past knowledge and the observations of this year's two toad patrollers, Dave Huggins and Mia Clarke-Blythe, it appears that:

1. The toad colony numbers are down and there appears to be a steady and systematic decline.

2. The number of vehicles using the (former) B2065 has increased, and is set to increase with further development throughout the Elham Valley.

3. The general speed of vehicles using the road appears to have increased.

One of the main reasons for the decline in numbers is the annual carnage on the road, and therefore it is imperative that action is taken now before the Millennium migration. The will and interest to do something positive for the year 2000 has been kindled and Dave Huggins is co-ordinating the effort and liaising between local expert Clive Moore (from Lyminge), Gordon Wallis (the owner of the Beachborough ponds), Shepway District Council and the White Cliffs Countryside Project. Details of the project will be released later in the year.

Dave and Mia would like to thank those drivers who were mindful of the plight of the toads during this year's migration, by acknowledging the signs and slowing down, avoiding the toads and for understanding their obtuse dedication. THANK YOU.

Gardening

Lyminge Gardeners' Society

Despite a plague of voracious mini slugs and snails in most members' gardens, the Spring Show was very well supported and entries in all classes were up on last year. The judges in both the horticultural and domestic sections commented on the high standard of entries. It turned out to be a day for the ladies with Jacqui Storey and Marjorie Joyce winning three cups each. Jean Davis with one and the lone male, Charlie Seymour, winning the Perpetual Cup for Best in Show.

The meeting for May is on Tuesday 25th and is an evening walk around Samphire Hoe. The Warden will give an introductory talk at 7.00pm. Meet at Samphire Hoe car park at 6.45pm. For those requiring transport, or who are unsure of the way, be at the Library car park by 6.15pm.

The meeting on June 23nd will be a visit to Pear House, Sellinge.

Phone Doug Furminger on 862006 or Janet Turner on 862158 for details. Non members are most welcome at all meetings and outings.

* Just a reminder that Gardeners' Society members can get 10% off any purchase made at Farthing Common or Highfield Nurseries, Folkestone on production of their membership card.

Garden Tips for May

When making up pots and baskets, line with polythene before adding compost to help water retention. Net strawberries to prevent 'bird picnics' and cover vegetable crops with fine mesh to help ward off feasting flying pests. When putting in new plants and also tomatoes in the greenhouse, sink a flower put beside them; the water will then go directly to the roots, rather than evaporate on the surface of the soil. Continue to listen to the weather reports for late frosts and protect and tender plants.

Etchinghill Nurseries

We have a selection of bedding and perennial plants available from May onwards. Also tomato, cucumbers and runner bean plants. Ring 863314 EVENINGS.
