Skate Board
Park
By Eileen Hall
Just an up-date… we now have £1,615 towards the
Skate
Board
Park . Wouldn’t it be brilliant if we could
make it up to £2,000? So next time you’re passing ‘Brooklands’, North
Lyminge (opposite Thoroughly Wood) why not drop a pound coin through the
letter box – as they say, every little helps!
|

You probably noticed that one of the major supermarkets just
recorded a record profit. This isn’t the place to discuss the whys or
argue over cheap prices versus fair prices but I think it’s a timely
reminder that our local shops contribute a lot more than any of the
large supermarkets towards our quality of village life. While its great
that the supermarkets also contribute back into the community with
schemes such as Computers for Schools it may be argued that what serves
our community best is not to spend that little bit extra at the
supermarket and get 0.001 of a penny for every ten pounds we spend but
spend locally just that bit more often. We all know the old adage use
it or loose it and that certainly applies to all our village stores.
Local stores not only provide livelihoods for village families but
provide the convenience of not having to drive a quarter of an hour for
a last minute loaf of bread, a prescription or coal for the barbecue. Of
course I’m not saying never go into a supermarket, but I am suggesting
let’s buy what we can locally first before needs dictate that we travel
to town. Villages, including our own, have lost too many shop fronts to
have the luxury of losing more because we don’t use the shops
themselves. However, let us also be pragmatic, if we do go to the
supermarket it makes sense to collect the voucher for our local school.
As far as I’m concerned our supermarkets owe us that much at least. |
Calling All Plumbers: Invest In Our Future – by Glenn Floyd
You may
remember starting out, maybe many years ago or just recently. Some of
you will have been lucky enough to receive the opportunity to gain an
apprenticeship and you will know how that proved invaluable to gaining
real skills and putting you on the road to success.
A young man in the village has completed his first stages of
Plumbing certification (Basic Technical Cert in Plumbing Level 2) and is
due to commence his NVQ Level II this September 2005.
Nathan has worked part time during his training and is now ready to
take the next step. Due to commence a one year NVQ Level II in Plumbing
he requires the opportunity to work hard with a Plumber and be allowed
to attend college once a month. How often have you thought an extra pair
of hands would really help your business, well Nathan is equipped with
basic plumbing knowledge, enthusiastic and keen to learn more. Just what
you have been looking for!!!.
This cost effective opportunity is available to any forward thinking
Plumber who can recognise opportunity and would like to help a keen,
polite, enthusiastic and part qualified Plumber.
Basic Technical Cert in plumbing includes: Cold Water Systems,
Domestic Hot Water Systems, Sanitation Systems, Central Heating Systems,
Electrical Supply, Sheet Lead Weathering and more.
If you would like to find out how the apprenticeship would work for
you please contact Glenn Floyd 01303 862 732 or if you would like to
speak to Nathan Pulford 07843 415344.
You provide the
opportunity, you receive:
enthusiasm – dedication – hard work – an extra pair of willing hands!
A short history of Lyminge Day – by
Sarah Huntley
The traditional Lyminge Day was re-born
eleven years ago, after an absence of many years. It was re-started
with three main aims; to raise money for Lyminge Village Hall, to
provide an opportunity for all local clubs and societies to hold stalls
and raise funds, and of course to provide an excellent social event for
the village.
Lyminge Day has all the attractions of a village fete, but also prides
itself on having a little more as well! Each year there is a different
theme to the day, recent examples include a Caribbean day with steel
drums and dancing, a Jubilee theme and a school theme with participatory
sports day events. Dressing up is always welcome and this year’s Roman
theme provides lots of opportunities.
Some previous years have seen “It’s a knock out” style games and this
year, by popular demand, the games are back! Who could resist some
Roman chariot racing and mini-marathons!
If you want more information or to be involved then telephone me on
862775. We look forward to seeing you all there on 14th May.
A Big Thank You to Everyone from Chris
Feist
I wanted to thank readers of the
Newsletter for the support I received in relation to my London Marathon
run. As reported in the March newsletter I have been training and
raising sponsorship since September. Well, the seven months of training
culminated with a 26.2 mile (42.2 km) run around the streets of London.
It took me 4 hours and 18 minutes. The last hour seemed an eternity and
my legs were pretty sore for those final miles. The crowd support
(including Mandy and my Mum and Dad) was fantastic. I had my name
printed on my shirt and all around the course lots of people shouted it
out with words of encouragement. That really helped. Despite the pain,
it was a great experience and I’m very glad I did it.
I have been staggered by the support I
have received from friends and family, as well as strangers who just
wanted to support a good cause. Craig, Colleen and the other ladies at
the Post Office have kindly been collecting money for me, as has Emma
Wren at the school. Mandy and her colleagues at the surgery have been
drumming up support and our great friend (and fund-raiser
extraordinaire) Rowena Bergin has raised a magnificent amount. I am
grateful to them all for their efforts. All in all I am expecting to
have raised over £2,500 for the charity “Get Kids Going”. A huge thank
you to everyone who has sponsored me. Anyone who has yet to make their
donation can do so on line at
www.justgiving.com/feisty or
by sending me a cheque payable to “Get Kids Going” or cash to Stanley
Lodge, High Street, Lyminge, CT18 8EN.
Thanks again for all the support. |

GARDEN SAFARI
25TH & 26TH JUNE 2005
By Glenn Floyd
The Lyminge
Association are pleased to announce that the highly successful Garden
Safari will be held in June. We would like to hear from any previous
Gardeners who opened their gardens and any new people who are warmly
welcome and will receive full support from the Association and previous
Garden Open participants.
A small sub committee will be co coordinating the event this year and
will provide advice and guidance to any potential and regular
participants. If you have opened before you know what to expect but
please don’t think that people will not wish to experience your garden
again. Many people enjoy visiting your gardens every 2 years and are
interested to see developments or simply enjoy your efforts once again.
We are interested in representing all types of garden to demonstrate
what can be achieved, styles and work in progress so large of small,
courtyard or Kew we would like to feature your garden. When I moved to
the village I found that the Garden Safari gave me ideas and handy hints
on what would and would not grow in the area.
Etchinghill had a garden open last time and we welcome entrants from
both Etchinghill and Rhodes Minis. This is also your opportunity to
raise money for either your own garden fund or a worthy charity and this
has been achieved in a number of ways in the past by gardeners.
Hard work from now until June will be rewarded by sitting back for the
rest of the summer and only dead heading will be required!
If you wish to be included in the programme (non garden activities)
please contact us to discuss your event, display or attraction. All
potential Gardens will need to contact us to express an interest or
simply make further enquires. We look forward to a great village event
and welcome your participation.
Please contact me and leave your details and a member of the team will
contact you to discuss your requirements. 01303 862 732
The
Questionnaire. Have you done yours?
It’s not too late. Complete the questionnaire now & say what is good or
bad about the area. Your answers will help in producing a plan for the
future of this locality.
You may
well have seen the logo of the Lyminge Parish Plan on your recently
delivered questionnaire (don’t forget to complete yours) and wondered
about its origin. It derives from a bronze brooch found in a Jutish
grave in Lyminge in the 1950’s. It is about 3.5cm in diameter. The Jutes
were an Anglo-Saxon tribe who settled in East Kent in the 5th century.
Their European origin has long been debated. They described themselves
as ‘Kentings’ but Bede called them Jutes in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.
They are believed to have been a mixed group and originated from the
Middle Rhineland, Frisia and Jutland.
It is said, in legend, that the British King Vortigen invited the
Jutish warriors Hegist and Horsa to help him fight the Picts in return
for being allowed to settle in an area of land that could be encircled
by one cow in a day. The warriors, however, were extremely clever and by
careful cutting of the hide of the slaughtered cow they enclosed the
whole of the Isle of Thanet. They were also extremely ruthless and
turned on their paymaster. After several battles the Britons gave up
Kent and it became a Jutish Kingdom for the next 300 years.
The kingdom became very prosperous partly because of its close
links with the continent. The royal court was not based in one place but
the king and his companions travelled about the country to the different
large estates known as 'royal vills' (sic). It is believed that one of
these royal estates was at Lyminge but no archaeological evidence has
confirmed this.
The Jutish graveyard was discovered in 1953 when a mushroom shed
was erected fairly near the Nailbourne. Kent Archaeological Society
carried out the subsequent excavations and a total of 44 graves were
found. Various finds were found including weapons, buckles, jewellery,
brooches, pottery and glassware. From the finds it has been concluded
that the burials took place in the 6th century. Full details about the
excavation can be found in Archaeologia Cantiana - Vol.69 1955 and at
www.kentarchaeology.org.uk. The report is interesting in itself being a
product of the mid-twentieth century. When reading it you will find that
PC Wellington Boot of Elham is acknowledged for his interest, enthusiasm
and ‘the establishment of good relations with the public’. When I first
read this I found it hard to believe that such an aptly named police
officer existed but on looking through the book ‘Elham Past & Present’
recently there I found picture of him at the Coronation Celebrations.
Lyminge Parish Plan Group gratefully acknowledges Kent Archaeological
Society for permission to use the image of the brooch. The original
brooch and other finds from the excavation at Lyminge can be viewed at
Maidstone Museum.
So far about 50% of the parish plan questionnaires have been
returned. Even if you have not completed yours yet, it is not too late
to do so as the questionnaire analysis is continuing. In 1987, when the
last survey was carried out in the parish, about 60% of households
replied. Let us see if we can get a similar response now and show that
we care about the future of our community. If you require another copy
of the questionnaire please contact: Mike Foxon 862073; Les Preston
863495; Alistair Bailey 864235; Charlie Dodds 862800. |
The Lyminge Association’s Charities’ Trade Fair
Saturday 11 June, 9.00am – 12.00pm at Lyminge Village Hall
The Charities Fair was forced to be rescheduled from earlier
in the year because of the snow – you haven’t forgotten, have
you? OK, this is what happens; local and national charities hire
one or two tables. They are invited to sell what they like in
order to raise funds for their organisation – so the goods on
offer may range from bric-a-brac and cakes, to their own
charities goods (pens, pencils, notepads and so on), The Lyminge
Association sets up the tables and organises the refreshments.
It is a good place to meet up with friends for a coffee and a
natter while, at the same time, supporting your favourite
charities. If you know of a registered charity which would be
interested in taking a table or two (two is the maximum, because
it is such a popular event; the cost is £3.50 per table), please
suggest they ring Liz Coleman on 863197

Garage Sale Safari
When you consider that a fortnight tbefore the Garage Sale
Safari we were in the midst of wintery, snowy conditions, the
weather on Saturday 19th March was nothing short of miraculous!
The glorious warm, sunny weather couldn’t have been bettered
–and certainly helped both the sellers and the buyers. There
were 29 garages to peruse in the end, although some of them were
late-comers and were thus not on the map. Most did very well
indeed and were very pleased with the day, while one or two in
remoter locations did not fare so well. The insertion in the
“Village News” section of the local paper helped promote the
event, as did a mention on Radio Kent and a piece on the BBC
Kent web site. People came from various parts of Kent and even
as far away as Welwyn Garden City! Following requests for the
Garage Sale Safari to be repeated I shall be looking towards a
Sunday, probably in early September (11th September seems a
likely date), but I need to check with the local calendar – we
don’t want to clash with other events, e.g. the proposed “Fun
Run”, so it’s a case of “watch this space”! Liz
Coleman.
ETCHINGHILL W.I.
Our
meeting commenced on a very sad note when our President
announced the death of one of our stalwart members Anne Gibbons
(a very brave lady). Many members attended her funeral. She will
be sorely missed.
The usual business was then attended to. Two members were
presented with birthday posies. We then discussed where to go
for our next cream tea. A vote was taken and The Churchill
Hotel, Dover was the popular choice.
Mr I Currie entertained with his talk on Frost – Fairs and
Freezes.
Our meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at
Etchinghill Village Hall starting at 2.30pm. We are a friendly
group of 40 ladies who are always pleased to welcome visitors
and members. We are well known for our lovely teas at the end of
our meetings. COME AND JOIN US.
Our next meeting on 17th May will be the resolutions meeting
– always most interesting. The competition is for a fresh flower
arrangement not exceeding 4 inches high.
Any enquiries regarding the W.I. please telephone Barbara
Syrett on 01303 265229 or Jean Bilham on 01303 239311.
ETCHINGHILL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
57
children and accompanying adults had an exciting afternoon
indulging in the numerous activities organized for Etchinghill
Residents’ Association second Easter Eggstravaganza.
Our thanks go to Claire, Hester and Barbara for all their
organisation and innovation and to all committee members and
others who helped to make sure the event was such a success. The
prizewinners of the various activities were as follows:-
Children’s Colouring competition: Up to age 5 – Charley, up to
age 8 – Adam, age 8 + Gemma Helen Mc Farlan won the hamper, Jean
Howard (yes the same person wot does this newsletter) won the
bottle of champagne, Barbara Collins-Newing won the Egg Lottery
and Louisa Blunden guessed the closest to the exact number of
eggs in the elephant.
Unfortutely we did not take the names of the children
participating in the Easter Bonnet competition. However, the
winners were a girl whose crowning glory was all home made and a
boy who’s cowboy hat was really quite novel. All the children
entering this competition received a reward.
Thank you to everyone who came and supported this event and
special thanks to Lyminge Coffee shop and Etchinghill Golf Club
for their donations. A net profit in excess of £150 was raised!
Things we are working on presently on your behalf include
tidying Westfield Lane; adoption of Meriden Park’ a Village
clean-up day; the Multi-Sports Court & V.E. 60th Anniversary
celebrations.
Rhodes Minnis Evening Circle
At
our March meeting there was a great deal of fun and laughter
when Ahmed Ovais gave us a painting lesson. Many of us had not
touched a paintbrush since our school days and there was even a
paint box that a member had when she was at school. Look out for
us at the next Turner Prize Competition!!!.
We
were very pleased to welcome Chris Turner to our April meeting
with his stories of his family going back a few generations and
of him growing up including some of the antics that he and his 2
brothers got up to. He has some really wonderful memories. Our
competition “ A Joke” clean ones of course) 1sr Eileen Sless,
2nd Connie Burren and 3rd Di Bennett.
Next month’s meeting on the 18th May is our AGM when our members
are treated to a Fish & Chip Supper. We are always pleased to
welcome visitors and the meeting commences at 7.30pm at Rhodes
Minnis Village Hall – Entrance £3.00 for non- members to include
supper.
Please ring Eileen Sless if you have not already your supper by
11th May 2005. Please contact Eileen Sless on 01303 863081 for
further details or any questions you may have.
We
look forward to seeing you all there.
AGE CONCERN ELHAM RURAL
We
still have some single and double electric blankets free of
charge to any older person living in our catchment area. The
weather does seem to be improving now but be prepared for next
Winter. During the snowy conditions we were able to continue
offering a service to our most vulnerable clients. Staff
delivered hot meals and did shopping for older people who were
unable to get out and about. We were one of the few Age Concern
Day Centres in Kent which operated every day!
COMMUNITY WARDEN
The
new Elham Valley Community Warden is Gary Harrison who is
already in post and covering from Etchinghill to Elham.
He
can be contacted on 07977982185 or by email at
elhamvalleywarden@hotmail.co.uk. His base will be the
Lyminge Library.
Please give him a warm welcome and in the early stages give him
assistance as to locations and make sure that he is made aware
of any elderly or vulneralbe neighbours who might benefit from
his help
He
will of course be working with PC Trevor Moody.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Len
Gibbons, Helen, Sue and Adrian would like to thank everyone for
their kind words of sympathy following the recent loss of Anne.
A very special ‘Thank you’ to Peter Ashman and to the staff at
the New Lyminge Surgery.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Maureen Chantry would like to thank everybody who has sent cards
and been so kind after the death of George. A special thank you
to Mary and Derek Osbourne who have always been sincere friends.
THANKS
A
very warm THANK YOU to all the kind people of Lyminge who came
to my rescue when I fell on my forehead when missing the kerb
outside he Post Office on Tuesday 12 April about 4pm. They are:-
the Post Office lady who sat me inside and gave me wipes for my
forehead and a glass of water, Christine at the Lyminge surgery
and my GP Dr Blinston Jones. The biggest THANK YOU must go to a
lady called Fiona, the total stranger who tended me like a
guardian angel from the moment I fell, delivered me to the
Surgery in her car and sayed with me until she had made sure
that I was in good hands and that my son could come and collect
me. All this she did despite having children at home. Her care
and concern brought a little tear to my eye.
Much as I hate to become the centre of attention, especially for
a stupid fall, I have to agree with a quote from Ecclesiastes:
…woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he has not
another to help him up.
I
had no concussion, no broken bones, just a graze on my forehead
but feeling a bit guilty for causing some trouble to very busy
people. Thanks again to them all Anna Auten,
Etchinghill
Lyminge Pre-School Playgroup Reg. Charity No 1029226
In February this year the OFSTED
inspector was so impressed by the Lyminge pre-school setting
that she awarded us with the highest grade possible! This is
only achieved by 15% of all pre-schools and nurseries in the
country! She felt “The education provision at Lyminge pre-school
is of high quality and staff work positively and
enthusiastically with all children, encouraging them to be
confident, independent and self assured”. We were very pleased
with the result and as leader of the Lyminge pre-school I would
like to take think all the staff, parents and of course the
children for being brilliantly supportive. This term has been a
busy one s we have been learning about colours and shapes as
well as different cultures and festivals. This topic is
supported by visitors to the pre-school and walks around the
village. We have also been encouraging spontaneous creative
activities in addition to our curriculum as further support to
the children’s learning. Our pre-school is a day care setting
