THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER

May 2003

Produced by
The Lyminge Association

Well, we made it to a second issue, so we can't have done too badly! Jean and I are gradually getting the hang of this newsletter, and would like to thank everyone for their words of encouragement. I have received some very kind phone calls and emails expressing pleasure that the newsletter is continuing - so thank you! Also, thank you for the suggestions that we have received so far, don't forget to mention any more that you may have. On the subject of "thank yous", I have received numerous requests from villagers wishing to express their gratitude to those responsible for the daffodils in the village this year. Your efforts were appreciated by a lot of people!
The deadline for articles for the next newsletter is 18th May. Articles can be placed in the boxes in the library or the newsagents, or emailed to us. If you have any queries or comments, contact me on 862775 (sarah_huntley@hotmail.com) or Jean on 862488 (jean.howard1@btinternet.com). Following our appeal last month for help with delivering the newsletter, we are still looking for more help in the Rhodes Minnis area. If you can help, please phone Debbie Marsh on 863192.

News from the Parish Council

Parish Council elections
A number of people responded to the item in a previous newsletter, and were nominated for the Parish Council. In the event, less people were nominated than there are vacancies, so there are still spaces available. !f you'd like to know more about being a parish councillor, or you'd like to put yourself forward as a candidate, you can contact Derrick Hamer, the Chairman of the Parish Council, on 863182. or James Butcher (details below).

Parish Plan
As reported earlier in the year. the development of a Parish Plan is underway. A group of interested people have met to start planning the first steps, and the Parish Council has applied for funding from the Countryside Agency. The aim is to involve as many people as possible in thinking about the priorities for our community over the next five to ten years. That's likely to involve questionnaires and public meetings and all sorts of projects looking at different aspects of life in the parish. If you'd like to get involved, or to share your ideas, please contact James Butcher (details below).

Parish Council precept
Alert residents noticed the rise in the Parish Council "precept" - that bit of your council tax which goes to the Parish Council. Although the total amount is comparatively modest, the rise has been a sharp one. The reason is the need to pay for resurfacing the various children's playgrounds in the parish, with safety material required by new regulations. Apologies that this explanation is coming after the event, rather than beforehand. As the new council gets to work in May, we'll make sure that we have a more robust system forgetting news in the newsletter regularly.

Men of the Trees award
Once a year judges from the Kent Men of the Trees organisation visit villages to see who is looking after their trees particularly well. This year Lyminge has been awarded first prize. The judges were particularly impressed by a project at the school during which children grew trees from seeds: their saplings that were at the back of the library have now been replanted around the village. The judges were also impressed by the way trees are looked after in Lyminge. Thanks and congratulations to our Tree Warden, Diana Alien. Our prize is an elm tree: this is to be planted in the Old Churchyard, which Philip Wilson and a team of volunteers have been working hard to renovate.

Tidier recycling
Shepway District Council have responded to our request to clear up the glass around the recycling bins.

Next meeting
The first meeting of the new Parish Council will be on 19th May, at 7.30pm in Lyminge Village Hall.
James Butcher, 863581, james.butcher@work-without-walls.co.uk

During May in the Library

A reminder that each Thursday from 2.30-5.00pm an officer from Shepway District Council is at the library to answer any questions and help solve problems that you may have with any of the council services, e.g. holes in the road, street lighting, and housing. There is a video link to the offices at Hythe and New Romney where more information is available if needed. Details of the Kent Karrier travel scheme are also at the library. The scheme provides a door-to-door town centre service for those who live more than 500 metres from a regular bus service. The service can be pre-booked at least 24hrs before you wish to travel. Those in the Lyminge area who already use the service cannot speak highly enough of it.
There is no exhibition in the library in May. If you would like to exhibit your own work or that of a dub or society, call Janet or Susan on 862158.

Etchinghill W.I. - April meeting

Mrs Syrett welcomed one visitor. After business
was dealt with she introduced our speaker Mrs J
Surrey whose subject was "pins & needles". She
had a most interesting collection of them dating
back many years, she explained the history of
them. A most informative talk especially the
different customs connected with hat pins.
The winner of the competition was Ann Gibbons,
her pin cushion on a clasp was late Georgian -
early Victorian made of Rosewood inlaid with
mother of pearl.
We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 2.30.
A warm welcome awaits any visitors.

LYMINGE LIBRARY - NEW DOORS

Regular users of the library may have noticed an -
innovation - AUTOMATIC DOORS (which are
confusing staff and borrowers alike). A few hints:
On approaching the library the outer door will open
like magic (if the staff have remembered to turn the
mechanism on). If the inner door is shut a pad on
the wall in the lobby must be pressed to open it.
Once inside and wishing to get out a pad inside the library must be pressed to open the inner door.
Yet another pad (but not the same one used for
entry to the library) in the lobby must be pressed to open the outer door and allow escape.
Now, isn't that easier than simply pushing or pulling
a door to get in and out? Good Luck!

RUBBISH AGAIN!

Thank you for the good response to the appeal for
help with litter picking in Lyminge. Dates and
venues will be arranged soon. It's not too late to
join in if you would like to help keep you village tidy, just phone Steve Huntley on 862775.

Some tips on pest control from Mr Puddlefoot the guest speaker at the Lyminge Gardeners Society in March.
To control Whitefly: Mix 1 desert spoon of comfort fabric conditioner with 1 gallon of water & spray affected plants. Vine Weevil: Crush 1 mothball in a 40 litre bag of garden compost before potting up plants and vine weevil will not be a problem.
Rust: Mix 1 teaspoon of plain flour in 1 gallon of water and spray affected plants. Do not pick off individual leaves with rust, this will cause the spores to explode and spread to other plants.
Aphids: Save any slivers of soap, put into a jam jar 1/2 filled with water, keep adding soap until the contents become jelly-like. Mix 1 tablespoon of the jelly to 1 gallon of water and spray plants liberally. Do not use washing up liquid as it will leach oil from the plants, leaving white spots on the leaves.
Slugs & snails: Malt beer put in plastic milk bottle tops and placed around the garden or oats kept dry by placing into small plant pots laid on their side will kill slugs and snails. However, this is best done in April when the eggs are hatching and the young are feeding.

BUSINESS ADVERTISING NOTICE
The rates for placing a business advertisement in the newsletter are £5 for an unboxed entry and £7.50 for a boxed entry. All entries must be paid for by time of publication. 12 months for the price of 10 are available if booked in advance. We receive many positive comments regarding the amount of business generated from advertising in the newsletter, if you would like to advertise, please contact the editor We have recently been receiving many enquiries from businesses outside of the Lyminge area who wish to advertise in the newsletter. The Lyminge Association feels strongly that to be fair to both local advertisers and customers, we must restrict the geographical boundries on the businesses we accept. We will be strictly adhering to the rule that all business advertisers must either live in or trade from the distribution area of the newsletter i.e. be able to provide a home or business address in the Lyminge, Etchinghill, Postling, or Rhodes Minnis area. A mobile business based outside of the area but which could operate here as part of its work, e.g. a tradesman based in Canterbury, would not fit this criteria. Apologies to anyone who may not be pleased by this, but by being strict we ensure fairness to everyone and retain the interests of readers and advertisers. Any prepaid advertisers who do not meet these requirements will, obviously, be honoured until their account reaches renewal.
