Lyminge Association News
1.
The Lyminge Signs
We
would like to apologise for the lack of the sign at the Folkestone end of
the Village. It blew down in the Autumn gales and while it is not
particularly damaged, new fixings will have to be found as the wooden
dowels have rotted through. While the sign is at ground level it is
to be cleaned up and repainted and we have been waiting for warmer drier
weather (aren’t we all!) in which to do the work. All being well
this will happen soon! We also hope to “Spring clean” the sign
at the Canterbury end.
Newcomers to the Village may be
interested to know that both signs were erected nearly thirteen years ago.
The Lyminge Association was responsible for their production and money was
raised from a variety of sources and donations. The design for the
signs was the work of Ann Sparkes, and with Ann’s permission this is now
used as the “Lyminge Logo” (as on the Newsletter above). Tony
Blain made the slight adjustment to the logo for use on the Christmas
issue of the Lyminge Newsletter (i.e. Santa’s sitting on the train while
the sheep and Queen Ethelburga look on in amazement!).
2.
Newsletter Distribution
We have a slightly different
arrangement for Newsletter distribution – for distribution to the
distributors! If there have been any teething problems, we apologise.
We are always very grateful to our team of distributors who deliver your
Newsletter to the door at the beginning of the month, come rain or shine.
As we move into summer, a small plea to the distribution team – if you
are going on holiday and will be away at the beginning of a month, please
let us know and let us know who will do the distribution in your patch on
your behalf. Please ring Debbie Marsh on 863192.
3. Collation and Stapling
of the Newsletter
Until recently the residents and
staff of Broadstreet House have been collating and stapling the Newsletter
by hand for us. This has been no mean task because there are over
1,500 copies to deal with each month! However, Adrian, our printer
now has an automatic collator and stapling machine which can do this task
instead. Although everyone at Broadstreet House was very cheerful
about the task, we are sure that they won’t miss it! Thank you
very much indeed to everyone.

School News
Mr. Trevor Jones
retired as Headmaster at the end of the last term. The Governors
have been delighted to appoint Mrs. Michele Rowland as the new Headteacher.
Mrs. Rowland is at present the Headteacher at New Romney Infants School
and has a wealth of experience in teaching. She will take up her
post in September and in the meantime, Mrs. Jo Beaman is the Acting
Headteacher. In his final letter to parents Mr. Jones said;
“The school is at
an ideal stage in its development for a new Headteacher to take it
forward. We have just had an extremely positive OFSTED report, and
the building plans are coming to fruition. I am sure that the school
will go from strength to strength”.
“I should like to
thank all those people from the village who have given donations to the
school for the building fund. Many of these people appeared at the
school office and said that they wished to remain anonymous. At
least £768 has been received from these donations. Thank you once
again for all your help”.
Claire Frost,
Chairman of the Parents and Friends of Lyminge School adds;
The School Building
project funds are growing and are now about £12,500. I would like
to thank the Lyminge Association for their kind donation. Thank you
to Glenn Floyd for coming to the funding meeting and offering support and
some new and fresh ideas for our fund raising. A very big thank you
to Roy Copping of Haxtons for all his continuing help and support.
The sponsored bounce held in March should bring in, in excess of £1,500.
Once all the monies are received, there will be a further update on all
our fund raising efforts in the June Newsletter.

Notices
Appeal for
Information
1. From Adrian Westwood,
Hawksdene, the Street, Hastingleigh, Kent. TN25 5HU
Mr. Westwood is seeking British Resistance Fighters. Are you, or do
you know of someone who was, a former member of the Home Guard Auxiliary
Units, Special Duties Section or XII Corps Observation Unit? He is
researching a book on Kent’s Secret Army, the resistance movement set up
in July 1940 to counter the expected German invasion following the Fall of
France and the Dunkirk Evacuation. Winston Churchill ordered a Secret Army
(known officially in Kent as XII Corps Observation Unity) to be formed
comprising men who knew the Kent hills, forests and marshes, such as
farmers, farm workers, market gardeners, landowners, foresters,
gamekeepers, poachers, policemen and shepherds.
Secret underground bunkers, observations posts and wireless stations were
built along the north Down, on Romney Marsh and in the Weald ready for the
mend to disappear into. Their suicidal role was to ambush German patrols,
sabotage railway lines, roads and bridges, assassinate German officers and
destroy supply depots and airfields – anything to slow the German
advance.
Mr. Westwood would like to hear from anyone with information on the men
and women involved and the underground bases. Please call him on 01233
750563 or write to the address given.
2. From Mr. H.M. Whitehead ex. 46 Recce Regiment
Just prior to going to North Africa in 1942 to serve with the British 1st
Army, Mr. Whitehead’s Regiment was stationed in and around Lyminge. His
own Squadron was based at Westenhanger Racecourse, so they knew the area
well. Mr. Whitehead wonders if any of our ‘senior’ residents living in
the area at that time would remember them. He enclosed a photocopy of the
first Race meeting they held in Austria post war, and it may be of
interest to note the names of the second, third, fourth and fifth races on
the Race Card, so called in memory of their pleasant stay in our area. The
Race Card has been placed in the Library for anyone interested. Mr.
Whitehead can be contacted on 01843 595730 or written to at 2 Vale Court,
Ramsgate, Kent. CT11 9JR.

most sincerely, everyone who sent her messages of condolence and made
donations to the Stroke Association in memory of John.
Special thanks to Jim and Tricia Smith and Bob and Olive Webb for their

sympathetic and understanding way they dealt with her and to Gill Mack for
her words of comfort at this sad time.
Patchwork Workshop
The next workshop will be on Saturday 19 May from
10.00am – 4.00pm – please check with Liz for the location. We will be

bobs – but the bag could equally be used as a large shopping bag or
beach bag. Suitable material will include remnants of light-weight
curtaining. Even if you have never done patchwork before, you are welcome
to join us. All you need is a sewing machine. We will also be discussing
the next stage in our “Round Robin” – and if you wanted to join in
with this it would not be too late. For more information, please ring Liz
on 863197.
Age Concern, Elham Rural
Volunteer needed – Urgently!
We need a volunteer to help with vegetable preparation on Mondays and/or
Thursdays between 9.00am and 10.15am. Two of our most valuable volunteers

have an electric potato peeler!
Please contact Sheila Woods on 862364.
Friends of Age Concern,
Elham Rural
To help with the constant problem of funding our
minibus, we launched a “Friends of Age Concern Elham Rural” on 1sst
April. Anybody who is interested in supporting this project, please
contact Sheila Woods at the Day Centre on 862364. Thank you.

Thanks
Many thanks for all the loving support and prayers
during my husband’s long illness. Gerald passed away on March 24th at
the ‘Hospice on the Hill’, where he received such wonderful care.
A special thank you to Dr. Koria, Dr. Michaels and staff of Lyminge
Surgery for all their help and support during the past 18 months, and
recently the home visits from the McMillan Nurse, who was so supportive.
Daphne Marsh, Christian, Sheryl and little Kaelum miss Gerald very much.
Rhodes Minnis Cat Sanctuary
Rhodes Minnis Cat Sanctuary
will hold its 27th Household Pet Cat Show at the Westgate Hall, Canterbury
on Sunday 27th May.
The Sanctuary re-home over 500 cats last year, almost all to people in the
East Kent area and are hoping very much that some of those more confident
felines will be shown for the first time this year. It is a happy-go-lucky
show and with over 50 classes almost every cat wins lots of prizes.
Entries have been declining since the hey-day of these shows at Folkestone
in the early 90’s and it is essential to their survival that there is a
worthwhile number of cats entered for the Judges and the Public to see.
Cats must be docile and good tempered and not mind being in their pens for
the day and being handled by the Judges. Lots of household moggies are
more interesting and with better temperaments that the pure-bred cats who
feature at the but shows.
The Show is one of the Sanctuary’s two major fund-raising events in the
year, the other is the Open Day at Seathwaite, which will be on the 22nd
July. All profits from the show and the open day go to help the Sanctuary
in its work of finding new homes for abandoned cats, or cats whose owners
cannot look after them any more.
Schedules and entry forms can be obtained from Pam Cassie, Tracey, Sandra
or Claire Jell at Seathwaite (862243), who will give advice on every
aspect of the Show. The closing date for entries is 14th May.

Lyminge Senior
Citizens’ Club
The Senior Citizens’ Club
enjoyed its first outing of the year on March 28th. After a drive through
Deal and Dover, we stopped for tea at the Pavilion on the East Cliff. On
the following Wednesday, one of our members found out who were the weakest
links after organising a quiz afternoon. Very enjoyable! D. Bain.
Etchinghill W.I.
At our meeting on the 17th April the members were given
a very interesting talk, with beautiful slides, by Joanna Westgate. We
went on a journey from sunrise to sunset, discovering the many varied
aspects of Dungeness. Joanna, a local wildflower nursery owner, had
stepped in at the last moment, as our original speaker was ill. The
competition was won by Dorothy Andrews.
Lyminge W.I.
Our April meeting took the form of a craft
demonstration on rubber stamping given by Mrs. Ann Martin of Sittingbourne.
This meeting was thoroughly enjoyed by our members and visitors, who found
the examples Mrs. Martin demonstrated quite fascinating. Our arts and
craft group is going well and meets every Wednesday in Lindsay’s Larder.
Needless to say, rubber stamping will be tested at this venue soon.
New members and visitors are always welcome. If you would like further
details, please ring Lyn Callander on 862799.

Spring Show held on 7th April
Despite the very wet and cold spring, the gardeners of Lyminge (and
Newington) produced an amazing display of flowers for their annual spring

along in the afternoon to admire the displays and enjoy the tea and cakes.

GardeningTips for May
At the time of writing, gardeners are still battling
against very wet ground, strong, cold winds, night frosts and wintry
showers, but hope springs eternal, and maybe worm, dry weather will
eventually arrive. Try and keep weeds under control now, before they can
get established. Apply weed and feed to lawns later in the month. Plant up
pots and baskets and harden off as the weather warms up. Continue to sow
bedding plants and to harden off developed annuals and perennials in the
green house. Put supports around tall perennials whilst still in early
growth, this they will be hidden as the plants develop.

Pétanque
Did you know there is a Pétanque terrain on the Green at
Elham – and would you like to learn how to play? There is a proposal to
form an Elham Valley club in order to teach newcomers how to play the
game, to develop the skills of those who have played before, and to
arrange matches against other clubs. Eventually there may be sufficient
expertise to enter a league. Anyone interested should register with Dennis
Huntley at Owls Acre, Woodland Road, Lyminge. Telephone 862343. A meeting
will be arranged in Elham as soon as possible.
Dennis Huntley led a team from Lyminge last year to win the first
competition held at the terrain The tournament is an annual triples
tournament between all the villages in the Elham Valley and the 2001
tournament for the Millennium Shield will take held during a Pétanque
weekend at Elham on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th June. More details next

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our
own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of being only
one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic
slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window,
which caries a severe weather rating. So, if you have old box sash
style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think
again! Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances,
slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical
Slider one of the best on the market. Remember, we are suppliers
to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window
when they see one!
