LYMINGE MILLENNIUM DRAW

To be drawn on Saturday 19 July 1999 at Lyminge School

If your copy of the Newsletter has been delivered to your home, you will also have received one book of Draw Tickets. The Lyminge Millennium Committee has organised this draw in order to help fund the many interesting and varied activities planned for the year 2000. We hope that there will be something to everyone's taste. The full schedule of events will be announced officially on Saturday 19 July, but they will include a New Year's Eve celebration to remember, a Pancake Day race, May Day celebrations, a street party, a "Harvest of Talents" for Harvest weekend and a children's Christmas party.

All these will need to be properly insured and funded and so the Lyminge Millennium Draw is the first of our fund-raising activities. There are lots of prizes - as well as the three mentioned on the tickets we also have a package of passes to fitness centres we have named " Get Fit For the Millennium", another entitled "Leisure and Learn", plus theatre tickets, a day trip to France, a tin of biscuits - and so on. Please help make 2000 a year to remember by buying your tickets. The stubs and money (£1.00 per book) can be left at Haxtons. Many thanks to all the Newsletter Distributors for bringing you the tickets and to Haxtons for their help. If you need any more tickets, please give Liz Coleman a ring (863197).

This month's Newsletter is sponsored by:

HAXTON'S TOWN AND COUNTRY ESTATE AGENTS

FREE VALUATIONS * COMPETITIVE COMMISSION RATES * COLOUR DETAILS
COLOUR ADVERTISING * INTERNET ADVERTISING * OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK

The traditional time for the selling of houses has arrived and at the moment the demand is outweighing the supply. If you are thinking of selling, or have not yet found a buyer for your home, then please contact us to find out what we can do for you. Haxtons is a member of the local independent network of estate agents (LINEA). This is a group of independent estate agents located throughout Kent who will help with the sale of your property at no extra cost to you. In this way, you benefit from dealing with one local agent and building a relationship with them, but at the same time, you receive the coverage and marketing efforts of many. We are also currently offering very special commission rates for all instructions taken on between now and the end of March. Please call in or ring Barbara, Roy or Joe for further details on 01303 863393.

Community Policing

Crime in Lyminge for January 1999 was down to just one, which was a theft from a motor vehicle. Please can bike riders make sure that if they are riding during dark mornings or evenings they have lights showing to the front and rear of their bikes. If anyone has any information about any crime in the Parish, no matter how small it may be, please feel free to come and see me at the Police Surgery at Lyminge Library. Alternatively, you can leave your name and telephone number at the Library and I will contact you. Finally, a note to motorists.... please remember to lock your vehicle and set the alarms if you have them, as cars are being stolen in some surrounding areas. Sam Wigley.

Note: the Police Surgery is held on Mondays from 3.00pm to 4.00pm and Thursdays from 6.00pm to 7.00pm. On the Mondays the Surgery is manned by a Parish Councillor, who will ensure your query or information is dealt with in complete confidence and directed immediately to the Police. The Monday Surgery is also an opportunity to deal with any matter which you feel the Parish Council can action.

Toad Patrol 1999

Established residents of Lyminge Parish will be well aware that a colony of toads over-winter in Ashley Wood (beyond Beachborough - opposite Summerhouse Hill). A good marker for the start of Spring is their annual migration to their spawning pond at the other side of the former B2065. However, the migration can take place at any time, unpredictably and in a headlong rush. The time depends on the weather and the lengthening of the days, but is more predicable at night and in damp (rainy) conditions. For regular users of the road, the first signs of the migration are the appearance of do-it-yourself toad signs (not a spelling mistake!) and a few people dashing around with buckets and torches! The first week of March is quite a usual start. Sadly another, more disturbing, sign is the large number of corpses littering the road. So, please slow down as you approach this area and then drive very carefully in order to avoid our four-legged, hopping neighbours - and the two-legged bucket and torch carriers! If you have time to spare, please also volunteer your services. Just turn up at the toad crossing suitably clad for the cold, wet, dark conditions and with a bucket and a torch and assist in the toads' long-term survival.

Etchinghill Village Hall
In February's Newsletter an error was made concerning the telephone number of the Booking Clerk for the Hall. The correct number should have been 862172 and NOT 862109. Our apologies to Dr. Michaels and his staff for this mistake and thank you to them for redirecting callers to ring 862172.

From the Village Hall Committee.
Affordable Housing for Parishioners
The Rural Housing Trust has negotiated with Meriden at Etchinghill for six houses of an affordable nature to be built at the rear of the site. The two-bedroomed units will be the same quality as the rest of the housing. They will be available for sale to people from the Civil Parish of Lyminge and are likely to be sold by Meriden at a price in the region of £91,000. The Rural Housing Trust, however, will be a part owner so the cost to the house-holder is likely to be about £45,000. They are also likely to be available to rent. This is very much a preliminary notice, but if you would like more information when it is available, please contact the Clerk to the Parish Council, Colin Auld, on 862607.

Hedgerow Survey
The Parish Council wishes to co-ordinate a survey of all the hedgerows in the Parish. A working group will be set up to audit the hedges. Volunteers are sought to help - perhaps you could take a note of a hedge along a path where you regularly walk your dog? If you would like to help, or need more information, please contact Patsy Philip on 862983.

Lyminge Library
Many thanks to the 1st Bossingham Brownies for their very colourful collage pictures entitled, "Brownies in the Millennium", now on display. The exhibition for March will be a collection of paintings, in various mediums, including some local landscapes, by Mary Hill. Mary will be showing her work for the first time at the Library.

Missing Mail
Some letters to a resident in Etchinghill have "gone astray". If you haven't received correspondence you were expecting and have not already reported this, please tell the Post Office - and your Parish Council Representative, so that they have as much information as possible to help with their enquiries.

Royal British Legion - Elham Valley Branch
Branch meetings are held at St. Mary's Hall, Elham at 2.30pm. April 6th, July 6th, September 10th and A.G.M. on November 12th. We are always looking for new members. Garden Safari - 19-20 June
The Lyminge Association is planning a Lyminge Garden Safari (gardens open) again this year. This is a very popular event and attracts visitors to the village. If you would like to open your garden to the public, please let Debbie or Paul Marsh know on 863192. As with previous years, should you wish to have a stall or do refreshments in your garden for your favourite charity, that will be fine.

Rev. Frank Kent
As most people will know, the Rev. Frank Kent is leaving Lyminge at Easter for a new "posting" at Sittingbourne. Frank's last service will be on Easter Sunday. Frank and Ann will be greatly missed, not just by Church Parishioners, but by the general community. Donations are welcome for farewell gifts to Frank, which can be left in the box at Gills Hardware, or given to any Church Warden or Harold Stenning at Church. The closing date will be Saturday 27 March.

Reports

Etchinghill W.I.

At our January meeting we welcomed a new member, Mrs. Hills. We enjoyed a talk by Mr. P. Smalley on "Recollections of a Country Vet" followed by tea.

Lyminge W.I.

On the 9th February we had a gentleman from Somerfield's Stores. He gave us a talk on how it first started up, to the present day. From what he said, they are still expanding. Our competition for the last month was a Jam Tart, which was won by Mrs. Harris.

The Senior Citizens' Club

The Club had a busy month again, and in spite of the cold weather our numbers have been well up. A talk was given by Mrs Bain on the year she first came to the village, travelling on the train from Lyminge to Folkestone in 1941. She also described Mayfield Road, the main road and shops in the village at that time.

Sibton Park Cricket Club

At the Annual Dinner Dance held at the Etchinghill Golf Club on 20th February, the following Cups and Shields were awarded for achievement throughout the 1998 cricket season:
Chairman's Cup: (donated by G.K. Keutenius) to G. Harris.
Batting Cup: (donated by J.O. Law) to T. Dunham.
Bowling Cup: (donated by P. McKen) to P. McLeary.
All-Rounder Cup: (donated by C.H. Clark) to D. Stewart
Fielding Shield: (donated by B.G. Norman) to S. Hickmott.
Young Player of the Year: (donated by D. Gabriel) to M. Wren.

Reminder: to all members - it is vital you attend the A.G.M. on the 6th March 199 at the pavilion for 8.00pm. Your club needs you!
For private party bookings contact Bob Williams on 863170.

100 Club winners for February 1999 were: £25 M. Clarke, £10 C.J. Francis.

Letters to the Editor

The following letters to the Editor were received in response to Mr. Norman King's letter which appeared in February's Newsletter:

From Yvette Grandfield, Kimberley Terrace:
"Dear Sir/Madam,
"I sympathise with Mr. King, but do not see that his complaint has anything to do with care of the aged. His annoyance seems to be isolated in the naming of a street which could be the concern of any member of society. I would point out that a terrace is 'a row of houses'; in this case a row of early 20th Century dwellings - number 1 to 8, designated Kimberley Terrace, and suitably signed at the Church Road end. Following No. 8 there is Tayne House, which originally had a large garden. This was used to build a new terrace, named "Tayne Cottages" and beyond this is Wesley Terrace, which joins the main road.
"I may add, that I am heartily tired of receiving mail addresses to 'Kimberley Terrace' which should go to people in 'Tayne Cottages'."

From 'Young' Bert Lewis:
"Dear Liz,
"I've had to read Mr. King's letter several times, shocked at how anyone can truly lay claims to lack of support in times of need within Lyminge.
"I received amazing support from neighbours when my Mother (well into her 90's) came to live with me. I had no difficulty in forming a rota to call in (keys made available) between 9.00am and 4.00pm on Mondays and Thursdays to check upon her and stay awhile when I was attending painting classes. The time came when professional help had to be engaged. Meals on Wheels with Age Concern in the background did not fail us. Similar help was given me during my late wife's long illness.
"By his implication I am highly indignant of any criticism of Age Concern. There is no other group more dedicated to helping Senior Citizens than the team at Everist Court when a reasonable need exists. I have worked with them since arriving here in 1979, fading somewhat now, as I am an octogenarian. My advice to Mr. King is to put on a smile, knock off the chip(s) on his shoulder(s) and do as I do, congratulate himself upon having arrived in Lyminge.

EAT YOUR EASTER BONNET!!

These biscuits are a favourite of small girls - who enjoy helping to decorate them
- and then as soon as they are decorated, promptly eat them!

Ingredients:
6 oz plain flour
2 oz cornflour
1 level teaspoon of baking powder
3 oz butter
3 oz caster sugar
I egg
Marshmallows
Glacé icing in various colours
Sugar flowers or similar decor-ations
Red bootlace liquorice

Method:
Combine the biscuit ingredients in your preferred manner. I food-process them, but if you do not have a food processor, cream the butter and sugar, add the egg and then stir in the sifted flours and baking powder. Roll out thinly and cut into rounds with a 3" fluted pastry cutter. Place on a lightly greased baking tray. You could experiment with baking some of them in slightly dished patty tins to get a curved brim. Bake at 190°C for about 15 minutes until they are a pale gold.

Cut all the marshmallows in half laterally and place the halves in the middle of the biscuits. Cover the marshmallows and the biscuits with glacé icing and then decorate according to choice. The red bootlace liquorice can be cut and curved into hat brim ribbons.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors

We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating. So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again! Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market. Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
