The Lyminge Association's Charities' Trade Fair
Don't forget the Trade Fair is this Saturday, 5th March, 9 am - 12 noon in aid of various charities. Ail sorts of items are on sale for good causes, and there will be an area to have coffee and catch up with your friends. Further details can be obtained from Mary Bennett on 863057.

Job Vacancy If you like being your own boss, working out in the open air and enjoy all the elements our marvellous climate can offer, we have the perfect vacancy for you: distributor(s) for Church Road, Lyminge. This pays precisely nothing per hour. However, your efforts will be greatly appreciated by us and the households to which you deliver.
If this sales spiel has even slightly interested you, please call Debbie Marsh on 863192. We need your help urgently, because the previous distributor has moved.

As you read this month's newsletter you will notice quite a few pieces relate to the parish plan. I would urge everyone in the parish to fill in the survey because it is your chance to have your say - if you don't fill in the survey, you won't have the right to complain about things that were not done you would have liked to have seen done!

I would like to thank Liz Coleman for all her efforts with the inaugural Garage Sale Safari, especially the write-ups for this newsletter. Thanks also go to Lyminge Hardware for being the focal point from which to get maps for the event.

Lyminge Parish Plan Group Questionnaire
Lyminge Parish Council has helped to establish the Lyminge Parish Plan Group to produce a plan for the future of our locality based on the wishes of our community. You may have taken part in our previous activities. Now we have reached the most important part:
The Questionnaire
It is based on the concerns you raised previously through our projects. It is very important that you and your household complete this as it is your main opportunity to provide information so that an action plan for the future of our parish can be prepared. It should only take about 20 minutes for each person to complete. It is confidential and can not be traced back to you. Please complete it and return in the stamp-addressed envelope provided.

New Recycling Facilities

Our local Environment Officer, Fiona Jarrett has informed the Lyminge Association that the council will be supplying all households with a box and a reusable bag in July this year. Glass bottles and jars, tins and cans and plastic bottles can be placed in the box and paper and card in the bag. There will be a weekly collection of all recyclables and a fortnightly collection of landfill waste and garden waste. Environment and Street Scene will be publicising the new scheme through letters and leaflets, public exhibitions, press and radio ads, school assemblies and door-stepping. Isn't this good news?

Our Very Own Marathon Man

Ever thought about running a marathon? One village man has done more than think about it: Chris Feist is in training to run the London Marathon in April for a charity called 'Get Kids Going!' When I caught up with Chris a few days ago the obvious question - apart from to question his sanity - was: Why?
His answer was threefold: it's a good cause worth supporting, it's a personal challenge and also because some of his friends have. The charity provides facilities for children young people up to 26 years old with disabilities, such as personalised manual wheelchairs and trikes for children to use every day. The equipment is not cheap, sometimes as much as £300 for a sports wheelchair, £2,000 for a lightweight manual wheelchair and £800 for a trike. Chris hopes to raise £2000.
Chris he has been in serious training since September of last year and has a running plan to build up his miles until just before the big day. His farthest run to date was 18 miles from Lyminge to Canterbury. He rang a friend to say he would be there about 1 pm, left at 11 am and was there by 1pm as promised. His reward when he arrived: honey sandwiches! He said the one great thing you can do when you run a lot is eat absolutely anything you want.
Chris is looking forward to the big day in April. He ran in a 10 mile fun run not so long ago, and said that was very enjoyable because a real event has the crowd and the atmosphere. Also it is a lot more fun running with a big group of people rather than alone in training sessions in the forest. During the week prior to the London Marathon Chris explained he would be carbo-loading (a technical word for pigging out on anything that looks as though it might have carbohydrates in it) and would be having a sensible meal the night before. He did add that for breakfast on the day of the event he would have - surprise, surprise - toast and honey to set him off! He aims to complete the marathon in around 4 hours.
If you would like to sponsor him for this worthy cause you can either sign one of his sponsor forms held at (1) the Post Office, (2) the New Lyminge Surgery or (3) his house, Stanley Lodge, High Street, Lyminge. Tel: 863997. Alternatively you can fill in the slip below and run round to his house and put it through his letterbox at Stanley Lodge.

Lyminge's First Garage Sale Safari
Saturday 19 March - from 9.00am

So far, 18 households have signed up for the Garage Sale Safari - and it's still not too late to join in. You don't need a garage - a table in the front garden will be fine! You can get a form from either the library, or Sunny Cottage, Canterbury Road and the cost is £5.00 (cheques made payable to the Lyminge Association). So, have a look in the attic, in the cupboard under the stairs - or wherever you store stuff you don't need anymore and turn it into cash! You must register your Garage Sale by Saturday 5lh March and the map showing the locations will be on sale at the Hardware Store on Monday 7th March. Already registered are:

Your Letters

Dear Editor: There seems to have been no feed-back regarding the Three Wishes for Lyminge' suggested over a year ago. Why has this taken so long? We have had a year of neglect over Tayne Field which has left it bereft of children. When my three children were at the Primary School it was always a popular play area. With the sad change of greedy progress the villages are sadly no more, instead they consist of over priced houses, too many cars blocking up not only the main road but all the minor ones with no access for walking or cycling safely. The money that has not been spent for so long should be there to supply much needed improvements to the very dangerous areas of Lyminge. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.
Mrs J R Johnson

Mrs Johnson's letter raises important issues - ones I am not qualified to answer. I'm only the editor, not a member of the parish council! So I asked the parish plan group for a response:

The Three Wishes Campaign was a good guide to individuals' concerns about our locality. Since then some of them have been put into action by various bodies. For example Lyminge Parish Council is attempting to complete the pavement at Broad Street in spite of limited resources being available. The Lyminge Parish Plan Group has continued to consult with the community through the successful Roadshows and currently a questionnaire is being distributed to all households in the parish. This allows everyone to have their say about the future of our area. Later in the year a report with an action plan will be produced from all these discussions. The community and its organisations will then be able act upon this plan.
Alistair Bailey (Chairperson, Lyminge Parish Plan Group)

Environmental Club Update
At the end of my conversation with Mrs Bedford last month, I requested updates about the Environmental Club on a regular basis: This month she reports:
• Children will be supporting the 'Litter Sleuth, Campaign' in March, so watch out for those reflective jackets patrolling our local area.
• Posters to encourage 'clean pathways' to school and around the village: 'Whoops there's a dog doings!'
• Thank you for supporting 'Fones 4 Schools'. The old mobile phones are coming in to our school office. These help people in need, so keep them coming in.
• Lastly, thank you to the Lyminge Hardware Store for supplying us with polyantulus for the front school office. We believe in supporting the local community shops - it saves on petrol!

A Thank You
The team at Taylor's Restaurant would like to express their deepest gratitude for the warm welcome and support since our arrival in the village. Initial renovations and changes to the restaurant are completed. We look forward to the warm spring days which will enable us to show off our new outside eating area, at the rear of the restaurant. New items are being added to the menu/ specials board to further enhance our services.

 • Celebrate weddings, anniversaries or birthdays

TALK on THAMES SAILING BARGES
IN THEIR HEYDAY
The Society is pleased that M.A,(Tony) Farnham is now able at long last to visit Lyminge to give his Talk on Thames Sailing Barges in their Heyday. Non-Members and visitors are always welcome to attend our Meetings at £2 per person. As usual, tea and coffee will be available after the Meetings when time is available to talk to the Speakers and for discussion. Any queries to Bob Gay on 862574.

The competition, ‘A Medical Remedy’ was won by Mary Hickmott.

On 5th March we will have two tables at the Charities’ coffee morning where many bargains will be available, including W.I. cakes, jams and marmalade!

Our next meeting on 15th March will be most interesting, as our speaker will be the well-known and popular, Mr Bob Ogley, who will speak on ‘Kent in the 19th Century’.
