Lyminge has just seen the
arrival of a new coffee shop!
The Lyminge Association would
like to welcome the proprietor.
Sally Burr, and wish her every
success. Sally says "Since
opening the Lyminge Coffee Shop
I have been amazed and delighted
by the support and encouragement
I have received from local
residents. I have been kept very
busy baking cakes and supplying
local firms with lunchtime
baguettes. Soon 1 hope to expand
the menu with homemade soups and
jacket potatoes etc. at
lunchtimes. Many thanks to all
my customers & to all the people
who have supported me." For more

'Dear Editor,
Re: Parish Council News, Connecting
Communities, Path Across the Golf Course
(February newsletter).
1 don't think that many would argue with the
principles of "connecting communities"
however the points I made in my last letter
are about the process of doing so. That is
of a lack of consultation leading to flawed
decision-making. Assuming that the need
existed for a firmer based path to be
constructed to help mums with prams and
elderly residents there was a much more
satisfactory and cost effective way of
achieving this. Many nature conservancy
bodies have been using, for a number of
years, on paths and car parking areas, a
very robust plastic netting which is pegged
down, allows the grass to grow through it,
and is only visible at very close
inspection, unlike the present path that is
visible from the top of Tolsford Hill. A
good local example is the village hall car
park at Littleboume, which, for many years,
has been showing how modem needs can be
reconciled with out adverse environmental
impact. If this approach had been adopted,
the grass path would presumably continued to
have been cut by the golf course, as before,
with little if any environmental damage
occurring. We now have a scar on the
landscape with notices put up by the golf
course management telling walkers to keep to
the path and not to trespass on private
property, and of course litter on the path!
Clir Floyds' assertion, in the last
newsletter, of the "concerns expressed by a
minority of residents" is made without any
verifiable evidence and is an attempt at a
political "put down". What Cllr Floyd does
not answer are why was there no consultation
& how much did it cost & would this money
have been better spent on making our
footpaths network more accessible by
repairing many of the styles and access
routes which are in a poor state of repair?
It would seem that after the recent
resignations from the Council it needs to
become more community inclusive & be less
autocratic and request further and better
particulars prior to making decisions.' Les
Preston, Etchinghill
"Dear Editor,
I am currently looking into the history of
Etchinghill Cricket Club and would be
pleased to hear from any past members, who
could give me any stories or memories whilst
playing etc. I am also looking to collect
any old fixture cards, photo's or newspaper
cuttings that people may be able to lend to
me (all will be returned). Contact me by
email at paulwebb105@btintemet.com." Paul
Webb
"Dear Editor,
Since opening the Lyminge Coffee Shop I have
been amazed and delighted by the support and
encouragement I have received from local
residents. There is still much to do and
next month we shall be having our first 'one
man' photography exhibition with another the
following month by a contemporary textile
artist. Both artists have exhibited in
London and further afield so we are really
excited about having them show their work in
Lyminge. I am also planning to have a
portfolio stand in which local artists can
place work for sale. As well as this I am
aiming to build up a selection of
contemporary craft goods for sale and am
keen to hear from anyone who has interesting
craftwork they would like to display. In
addition to this, the Coffee Shop space is
available for hire during the evenings for
meetings etc. I have been kept very busy in
the Coffee Shop baking cakes and supplying
local firms with lunchtime baguettes. Soon I
hope to expand the menu with homemade soups
and jacket potatoes etc. at lunchtimes. It's
still very early days - but so far, so good!
People have already been giving me ideas for
how things might progress and improve - all
suggestions are most welcome. Many thanks to
all my customers and to all the people who
have supported me." Sally Burr, Lyminge

The Parish Plan for Rhodes Minnis - Lyminge
- Etchinghill
Three
Wishes
We have had a magnificent response to this
campaign and would like to Thank all those
who have passed on their wishes for the
future of the parish to us. So for we've had
over 360 responses - mostly on the slips
printed in the newsletter, although a few
people have braved the technology and
contributed online. Key themes are emerging
which will shape the Plan and thus the
immediate future of our community. We will
let you know what the top issues and
concerns are in next month's newsletter,
together with information about how we plan
to work to achieve them. Wishes are still
coming in to us and given this level of
interest we hove decided to keep this
campaign going for another month. If you
want to have your opportunity to shape the
future of your community and haven't yet
done so,
contribute online.
Funding for the
Parish Plan
Confirmation of the success of our bid for
funding from the Countryside Agency has now
been received. The Countryside Agency will
provide funding to cover approximately half
the costs of producing a Parish Plan for
Etchinghill, Rhodes Minnis and Lyminge.
Funding has also been secured from Lyminge
Parish Council and is being sought from Kent
County Council and Kent Rural Community
Council. Such funding will enable us to
produce a document which represents the ways
in which we, the residents of this parish,
wont to see the facilities and environment
of our villages enhanced or preserved in the
coming years. We hope to have completed this
project by autumn 2004.

Beachborougn Toad
Colony
The Beachborough conservation
Group is continuing for the
fifth successsive year to rescue
migrating toads from the busy
B2065 near to the Beachborough
ponds. Last year, over 2000
toads were successfully rescued,
with road deaths falling to an
all time low.
The success of the project is
due to our dedicated
band of local volunteers and
this year we are seeking
your help to provide a long-term
solution through the
provision of purpose-built
tunnels, which will hopefully
be installed under the main road
close to the ponds.
As you may have seen from our
recent ongoing publicity
campaign in the Folkestone
Herald, we are seeking donations
from individuals and businesses
to help meet the costs of tunnel
provision. If you are able to
help in any way, we would be
pleased to hear from you. This
is an important local
conservation initiative and
depends entirely on local
support and funding. For
information regarding donations
please contact Gordon Wallis at
Beachborough Park on 01303
275432, or for general
information concerning the
project phone Brett on 863298
(eves) or Alan on 862663. Please
drive carefully when you see our
patrollers on the road during
February, March and April.

Rejoice, Revel and Respect- In
the Village, we are now seeing
the crocuses coming through, new
shoots and buds & I am sure I
heard a woodpecker the other
morning, so all those things we
said in our Three Wishes'
answers why we love living here.
We should revel in, rejoice in
but respect. Talking of respect
- just one plea. A lot of the
responses that I saw to the
questionnaire spoke of concern
at the speed of the traffic
through the Village. As many of
us
know, sometimes to our peril,
the pavements in the Village,
are very narrow and in some
places non-existent. There are
lots of young children and a
number of elderly living here.
know many of you are careful but
can we all please, Respect
others safety so that we can
continue to Rejoice and Revel in
our lovely environment. A few
less miles per hour could
mean a lot more to many - and
maybe avoid an accident waiting
to happen!

Our meeting this month was well
attended and we were pleased to
welcome four new members. After
Mrs Syrett opened the meeting
and ail business was
completed, six members were
presented with birthday posies.
We were entertained by Mr P
Shearan, whose subject was
'Poetry for your delight'. He
read many poems which were
humorous and brought back
memories for most of us, a most
enjoyable afternoon. The winner
of the competition for a
favourite poem was won by Dottie

We had another most interesting
speaker last month, Mrs Woolf,
who presented songs and
monologues by Joyce Grenfell.
We are a very friendly group of
ladies who would give a warm
welcome to any visitors. We meet
in the new
Village Hall at Etchinghill on
the 3rd Tuesday of each
month at 2.30 pm. At our next
meeting on 16th March our
speaker will be Mr G Harris and
his subject is 'A Russian
Journey - St Petersburg to
Moscow' and the competition is
for a decorated egg.
Gardening Tips
from the
Lyminge Gardeners Society
The grass cutting season begins
this month, snow
permitting. Make sure the mower
has been maintained and the
shears sharpened. Don't cut the
grass bowling green short unless
you are prepared to devote a lot
of time to its upkeep, it will
encourage the growth of moss and
scorch quickly in the event of
another hot, dry summer. With
gardening tasks gaining momentum
throughout March, try making a
list of jobs to be done and
tackle them one at a time rather
than rushing about like a
headless chicken. That way
energy can be conserved to see
you through the rest of the
season.

Rhodes
Minnis Evening Circle
At our February meeting we had
Heather Jackson speaking on the
sensitive subject of "Coping with
Deafness." This is a problem that
affects more people than we realise
as it is not a condition that can be
seen and sometimes only apparent
when the sufferer does not reply
when spoken to. Often the affected
are the butt of jokes because they
are not always aware that they are
being spoken too. Apologies from the
writer for not giving a full report,
as she was not able to attend the
meeting. At the time of writing the
results of the "Spring Posy"
competition was not available.
Members please note that the AGM in
May has been
brought forward one evening to the
18th May at the usual venue of the
Rhodes Minnis Village Hall.
This month, on Wednesday 17th March
we have Sue Chitty, a local craft
person, giving a Spinning Wheel
Demonstration. Anyone interested in
this ancient craft is very welcome
to come along. The competition is an
"A Craft Item." Ours doors are
always open and we give a very warm
welcome to visitors. The meeting
commences at 7.30pm at the Rhodes
Minnis Village
Hall. Please contact Eileen on 01303
863081 for further details or any
questions you may have.
We look forward to seeing you all
there.

rather speak to someone
face-to-face, pop into Lyminge
library and see the PALS Manager who
will be available on 4th and 18th
March from 4-5pm. |

**BUSINESS
ADVERTISING**
in the Lyminge Newsletter
Well, advertising in the Lyminge newsletter
is really taking off! Only July, August,
October and
November remain free for sponsoring the
front page and more local businesses than
ever are taking out
small ads. We have another 5 new advertisers
this month! Obviously this is all good news,
it means
more revenue for the newsletter, and
therefore more money for the Lyminge
Association to use for
projects in and around Lyminge. Therefore,
it seemed to be time to revamp the business
pages!
Everyone now has the same sized entry. I
have based this on the larger sized old ads,
so no one has lost
out. If you buy a box, you may put whatever
you want into it. A very short advert can be
in a large font,
or have more detail in a smaller font. You
can also now choose to have a logo or
picture if you wish, as
long as it fits in the box! This system is
much fairer to the advertisers and also
makes it all look more
interesting. Contact Sarah on 862775 if you
want to take out an advert, or make
alterations to an
existing one. Products & services
advertised here are not endorsed by the
Lyminge Association.

Because we believe that all pares
