Tuesday 4 March
Historical Society
The new 2003 Season of Talks and Outings starts next month at the Methodist Church Hall with a Talk on a subject which affects all of us in this area:
“The Elham Valley:
its Nailbourne and its Water Supply”.
Many of use have suffered the effects, both directly and indirectly of the floods two years ago and it seem probable that these will occur again in the near future.  Further, developments in the area have begun to question the availability of adequate water for our increasing personal, social and leisure usages.  We are most fortunate that Richard Monk, C.Eng. MICE MIWEM, one-time Deputy Engineer and Manager of the Folkestone and District Water Company, has agreed to address us on this subject of most topical interest.
Visitors are welcome to attend at £2.00 per person.  Lyminge Historical Society meets on the first Tuesday in each month at the Lyminge Methodist church Hall and visitors are always welcome.  Tea and coffee are available after each Meeting.  Any questions to Bob Gay on 862574.
Members who have not already paid are reminded that Annual Subscriptions of £7.00 are due.

Hogben - A Plea for Help!
I am very interested in Thomas Hogben (1703 - 1774), and would love to hear from anyone who can tell me about him and his family.  I know that he was a schoolmaster, a surveyor, and a maker of maps and sundials.  He was born in Aldington, I believe, and settled in Smarden; but knowing that Lyminge is very much the home of the Hogbens, I thought that this was the best place to ask.  I am particularly keen to find out about his father (also Thomas), - where and when he was born and died, and whom he married.  If anyone is interested, I would be very glad to share the details I have already been able to find out.

Lyminge Dramatic Society
– A Chorus of Disapproval
Make a note in your diary that tickets will go on sale on Saturday 15th March at Haxtons Estate Agents in Lyminge for our next production, Alan Ayckbourn’s “A Chorus of Disapproval.” The production will run from Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5th April at Lyminge Village Hall and Senior Citizens are invited free of charge to the dress rehearsal on Tuesday 1st April. All performances will commence at 7.45pm. Pete Raine will direct this hilarious play, about a lonely widower who joins a local operatic society. Don’t miss what promises to be a memorable production.
Finally, don’t forget that the staging which the Society has bought, will be a permanent feature at our productions. The staging is used to create raised seating for the rear 6 rows in the Hall and was voted a big success at ‘Arabian Nights’. The Society was fortunate to receive a generous grant from the Community Fund, South East Office for the purchase of the staging.

LOST – African Grey Parrot
“Squire”, a very tame, four year old African Grey Parrot, with a red tail, has escaped from his home in Postling.  The Squire Family whose pet this is, fled from Zimbabwe with their family pets so “Squire” has great sentimental attachments; they are desperately upset about his absence.  Probably quite easy to recognise if you come across him, he is also distinguished by his wide vocal range and vocabulary – all in an African accent!  He also has a ring on his right leg.  If you have any news (good or bad), please ring Liz Squire on 862381.

Gardening Hints
The gardening years starts with a vengeance in March, but the one task on most gardeners’ minds is the first cut of the grass.  NOT TOO SHORT is the advice – that goes for the rest of the year too.  Constantly scalping the lawn encourages growth of weeds and moss, thus necessitating the application of weed killer.  Feed with an organic feed, leave a little length on it, the healthy growth can then smother any weeds and better withstand the threatened hot, dry summers that are forecast.
