THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER

March 2002

Produced by
The Lyminge Association

Don’t forget to come to the annual charities’ coffee morning on
Saturday 2 March At Lyminge village hall – 9.30am – 12 noon

LYMINGE JUBILEE DAY
Saturday 11 May from 1.00pm
To celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee
We are looking for Vehicles, Fashions and any memorabilia (e.g. toys and games)
from each of the five decades.  If you have anything you could lend, parade, or display for us,
please contact Dave Hunt-Cooke (862928) or Den Huntley (862343).
We are also looking for helpers on the day!
An evening Jubilee Disco is planned for the Village Hall.  Make a note in your diary!

The Queen’s Golden Jubilee
Commemorative Medals/Coins

The LYMINGE ASSOCIATION is planning to give all the children attending Lyminge School, the Lyminge Pre-School Playgroup, the Babies and Toddlers Group, all Uniformed Groups (e.g. Scouts etc.) and all those children living in Lyminge who are aged 16 and under (and who are not covered by the above categories!) a souvenir of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
More details next month.

Proposed Alterations to the Parish Church
A paragraph in a letter from English Heritage to a parishioner reads;
            “It would certainly be necessary for the Parish to indicate wide support for what is often a matter of acute public concern, particularly as justification is certainly necessary as the part of the faculty procedure by which the Diocese would consider proposals for change.  May I suggest a postcard to the Diocesan offices at Canterbury, simply stating;
‘I am in favour of the proposed changes to St, Mary and St. Ethelburga Church at Lyminge, or ‘I am against the proposed changes …etc.’
“This would give the Diocese an idea of opinions within the villages served by the Church.”

Neighbourhood Watch
Cars and Garages

There have been thefts from garages which have been left unlocked in Hythe.  Please always lock your garage and shed.  Please also be careful when you are washing and cleaning your car.  Keep it locked when you are washing it and if you are cleaning the interior, make sure you have put the steering wheel lock on and that the keys are not in the ignition, but in your pocket.  This form of “car-jacking” has been happening just across the county border in Sussex – the owner is distracted by someone asking for directions whilst his accomplice jumps into the car and drives away.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously, call the Police on 850055

DID YOU COMPLETE YOUR SHEPWAY PRIMARY CARE GROUP QUESTIONNAIRE?
Actually, not many people did – which is sad, because this is YOUR opportunity to have a “say” in local health care.  Your voice really matters.  If you let SPCG know what works and what doesn’t they can act – but if no one responds then we will get the health care provision that they think we need.  The questionnaire will be reprinted next month.

GOOD NEWS
(at last!)

Etchinghill Village Hall
Plans to build a new Village Hall on the open space at Meriden Park received a massive boost with news of a grant of £142,000 from the Community Fund – the operating name of the National Lottery Charities Board.
Major grants have already been agreed by Shepway District Council and Kent County Council, with further resources from local fundraising.  It will now be possible to proceed with a detailed planning application.  Tenders for the work will also be sought with a possibility that building work could start by mid-summer.
It is more than four years since the idea to replace the existing 100-year old Hall was first put forward and this was the third attempt to obtain a major grant from Lottery sources.  In addition to the various grants and local fund raising, proceeds from the sale of the present Village Hall site will also be used towards the cost of the project.
The new Hall will have a much larger main room than at present, a stage area, a smaller meeting room and much improved kitchen, toilet and storage areas.  There will also be adequate car parking facilities with appropriate areas and proper access for disabled users.
Progress reports will be issued periodically, but in the meantime, further information can be obtained from Andrew Paris, Chairman of the Village Hall Committee on 863181.

Charlie Seymour
The Lyminge Association, along with Lyminge Gardeners’ Society, is sorry to learn of the death of Charlie Seymour on Friday 22 February.  Charlie was a kind and gentle man of the “old school” – and a very good gardener.  He will be much missed by his family and the people of Lyminge.

Elham Valley Lions
Apologies are sent to both Etchinghill and Postling villages concerning the Christmas float, which never materialized.  Unfortunately the Landrover had radiator problems just as we started that night and we had to abandon the float and the collection.
We are still collecting foreign coins for charity thanks to the Thomas Cook exchange programme.  Please bring them to Carol Crees at Elham Fudge Shop.

Volunteers Sought
Volunteers with just a few hours a week are required to help with a new Government initiative aimed at helping young people who have been involved in crime to get back on track.  From April of this year the volunteers will act as panel member to implement Referral Orders which will replace some fines and conditional discharges.  More information from 01622 772183.

DOGS
 Dear Dog,
I know you can’t read this, but perhaps your owner will.  For goodness sake, get your owner to take a “poop scoop” with him/her when you go for a walk.  The footpaths around Lyminge are not the place for “it” (besides which your owner could be fined if identified).  Take particular care along regularly frequented paths, e.g. alongside the Methodist Hall and the path between Brady Road and the Silverland Estate.  Your “messages” are being trampled into the carpets of Lyminge.  We know it’s not your fault, dear Dog – it’s your owner.

Tokens for Schools (e.g. Tesco’s for computers)
Lyminge School is always very grateful to friends in the village who donate their tokens – as ever, if you haven’t got a child to hand – pop them in the Newsletter box in the Library.  Very many thanks.

Lyminge Handbells
The Lyminge Handbell Ringers look forward to receiving bookings for the spring and summer.  We are training new ringers, so if you think you would like to have a try please let us know.  You will be made most welcome  The bells are available at weekends and evenings at any local venue or at your home for a minimum donation of £30.  If you are interested please call Stuart Hunnisett on 862530 or Ro Edmond on 863201, but please give us plenty of notice.

Lyminge Primary School
The Grand Opening of the new extension and computer suite is to take place on Friday 15 March.  We are delighted that the Right Reverend Bishop Stephen Venner, Bishop of Dover, is undertaking this duty.  All parents and anyone who has helped towards the planning, execution and funding of the building has been invited to attend the official opening and the celebrations afterwards.  If you would like to see these wonderful new facilities, please telephone the Headteacher, Mrs. Michèle Rowland on 862367.

Lyminge W I.
The February meeting of Lyminge WI commenced with a minute’s silence of respect for the late Princess Margaret.   Fran Baillie then introduced Paul Harris (of Radio Kent fame) who gave a very interesting talk on Seaside Entertainment  which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.  We are now planning a summer visit to Margate to see Paul’s traditional summer seaside concert together with a Fish and Chip lunch.

Etchinghill W.I.
Mrs. Janet Adamson was our speaker in February and her talks was on Family History.  Anyone wanting to research their family tree will be given help from Folkestone or Hythe Library.
P.S.  We will be having a table at the Lyminge Association’s Charities’ Coffee Morning – we hope you will all come along.

Lyminge Library
During March Lyminge Library has an exhibition by members of the Lyminge Art Workshop.  Pictures in oil, water colour, pastel etc. will be for sale.  The group meets every Thursday from 10.00 am till noon in the Methodist Church Hall.  Beginners are very welcome.  Contact Bert Lewis on 862746, or June Price on 862569.
A reminder that the Family History computer sessions will take place on Monday 4th, Thursday 7th, Friday 8th March from 3.00pm – 4.00pm.  Ring Folkestone Library, Heritage Room on 256710 to register an interest, no booking necessary.  “Archaeology in Shepway” will be on Thursday 21st March 4.00pm – 6.00pm.  Booking essential.  Again, ‘phone the Heritage Room at Folkestone.  At these times the computers will be unavailable for public use.
Once the computers are installed, the staff (i.e. Janet and Susan) will set them up and switch them off each day, but will be unable to give tuition, as the rest of the library will still have to be run (and they’re not that expert with computers!).
For the second time in the last few months, a Library window has been broken by football-playing persons.  Once the library is closed, it tends to be used by the young people for a goal post.  As well as windows, a down-pipe has been pulled from its brackets and plastic guttering shattered.  The building is 115 years old and not robust enough for such treatment.  We all, including the parents of those concerned, pay for the repairs through the Council Tax.  The seat outside the Library, a popular resting place for older people who have struggled up the slope to the building, is also receiving vandal treatment.  It would be appreciated if the young people use  the vast area of Tayne Field for their games and also remember, one day they will be of the older generation and as such, grateful for an unvandalised seat to sit on.
The Lyminge Brownies have a wonderful collage on show at the Library currently, entitled, “Bin It” – a rallying cry for all the village (see especially “letter” to “Dear Dog”).
Twelve of the trees planted behind the Library by the school children (who started them from seed to commemorate the Millennium Year) have been moved to the Churchyard by Phil Wilson and his team.  Left in the bed are some oaks, horse chestnuts and field maples, which are looking for a safe, temporary home until such times as they are sturdy enough to be planted around the Parish.  If anybody has some ground where all, or some of these trees could be temporarily accommodated, please ring 862180.

Gardening Hints
After a few months of rest, now begins the busy time for gardeners.  After the very high winds last month, check climbers are well supported before new growth gets started.  Start on the weeding while the soil is still moist, although not over-wet.  Begin with that which can be done from a path, rather than treading on soil or grass.  The lawn will soon need attention, although again, not if over-wet.  Giving it a good rake can improved the appearance greatly, until it can be mown.  Give houseplants some TLC on not such good days; re-pot if necessary, gently clean the leaves and start to feed.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards.  We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating.  So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again!  Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market.  Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
