June 1999
THE LYMINGE ASSOCIATION DISCO
Sunday 16 May:
With music still ringing in our ears and feet still aching from dancing,
the Lyminge Association Committee are enjoying the after-effects of the
FIVE-HOUR DISCO session! The children who attended the Disco yesterday
gave us an interesting five hours too! Little Daniel, who was rather
overwhelmed by the under five's Disco, and who fell asleep on Linda's lap
for most of the time, does not reflect the quality of Christopher's Disco
music! Well done Chris for 5 hours of wonderful lighting and music. Out
thanks also go to a certain little band of lads who were at the second (7
to 10's) session. They did a sterling job collecting up all the empty
drink cans during their time there and firmly insisted that we had to
recycle them at the bottle bank. How much Disco Dancing they did was
questionable, but we hope that with the rest of the youths who attended,
they enjoyed the event as much as we did organising it. The 11 to 15 year
age group was not so well attended, but provided us with interesting dance
routines to watch! Altogether approximately 180 children attended. Our
only regret was that we missed part of the wonderful atmosphere from
Lyminge Day as we were decorating the Methodist Hall to provide
'atmosphere'. Congratulations anyway to the Village Hall Committee for
their successful village day. Debbie Marsh (Chairman) and Linda Willcox
(Vice-Chairman).
Proposal for a Concrete Batching Plant at the
Beachborough Roundabout, Newington
Regrettably, this Newsletter will reach you too late for you to let
Shepway District Council know any views you may have (the planning
application is scheduled for discussion on 1 June), but residents should
be aware that Balfour Beatty have made a planning application (no.
99/0328/SH) to build a plant to make concrete for the rail link. If it
goes ahead traffic volumes and the environment could be severely affected.
Thank you to our sponsors this month:

Lyminge C.E. Primary School - 150th Anniversary
Celebrations
This year Lyminge C.E. Primary School is 150 years old. We are having a
week of celebrations 14th-19th June and invite you to join us for some of
the events. As part of the week there will be an exhibition of school
photographs, reports and memorabilia. If you can lend us any items for the
exhibition, please contact the school as soon as possible (Tel 862367).
On Friday 18th June we are being presented with a scroll signed by the
Archbishop of Canterbury marking 150 years to service to education and
there will be a buffet lunch for children, staff and invited guests. We
are trying to find the oldest person who came to the school to invite them
as guest of honour to the lunch. If you know of someone who might be
eligible, please let the school know.
On Saturday 19th June 10am-12 noon there will be an open day for
villagers to visit the school to look around, see the exhibition and have
coffee. Please come along and share in our celebrations.

Council and can address the Council on any matters of local interest

are in a Neighbourhood Watch area, you must make sure your Neighbourhood
Watch is still active!
Overhanging Branches and Greenery
Now that the leaves are on the trees and bushes, villagers are asked to
check any greenery which overhangs footpaths and cut them back as
necessary. This is particularly vital at junctions where a view of the
road may be obscured, and where branches and nettles may hurt small
children, particularly in pushchairs.

The Valley Carnival
The Valley Carnival will take to the road at 3.00pm, starting from
Lyminge School and then winding its way round the village,
stopping at the 'station' to refuel. The carnival is based on the
history of transport through the valley using the train as a
central theme. Amazing costumes are being made by the children of
Lyminge and Hawkinge Schools and by guides and scouts and other
groups. They are being helped by the 'Whole Hog Celebratory Arts
Group'. Lyminge Scouts are providing marching music. The Elham
Valley Lions are providing the organisation and backup. Workshops
are being held during half term in Elham and Lyminge for everyone
to come and do their bit and make the event a really impressive

King's School, Geography Settlement Topic
In an email from Rory Reilly, Head of Geography, The King's School, he
writes:
"I would like to thank the residents of Lyminge for their help and
patience with our pupils during their geography field trip to the village
on May 20th. They are now busy writing up their findings".
Further enquiry rendered the following:
"They looked at the site of the village. They surveyed all the
village services; type, situation and use. They looked at shopping
patterns of the people living in the village. They also looked at housing;
age and size. This gave them some ideas about the development of the
village. They also tried to gain an idea about the population structure of
the village, but with many out at work they realised that they were not
getting an accurate picture. In a questionnaire they also looked for views
about the village. Other villages studied were Ash, Wingham, Bridge,
Barham and Elham.
Calling Long-lost School Friends

Church until his voice broke (in Rev. Luckett's time). If you would like

Gardening Tips for June
Sow biennials, including polyanthus and winter pansies. Plant anemones
for autumn flower. Prune spring flowering shrubs after the blooms have
faded. Feed spent bulbs with a potassium-rich fertiliser to ensure good
flowering for next spring. Tackle perennial weeds. Look into ways of
conserving and collecting rainwater in the event of a dry summer. Mulching
plants helps and try linking up a series of water butts - it's a simple
task.
