COMMUNITY MATTERS

Parish Council

1. Dogs
Please note that a By Law exists that states that dogs may not be permitted to foul the following types of land:
All carriageways and all adjoining footways, and grass or other verges in the District of Shepway which have a speed limit of 40 miles per hour or less. All grass areas around communal housing areas, owned, controlled or maintained by the District Council. All parks, gardens, recreation grounds and open spaces owned, controlled or maintained by the District Council. All footways and promenades which are Public Rights of Way and have a properly maintained surface and which are on land not owned, controlled or maintained by the District Council. All car parks operated by the District Council whether or not a charge is made for their use.

2. Ball Games
There is also a By Law which prohibits the playing of games with hard balls (e.g. golf balls) on Tayne Field.

3. Hedges and Other Foliage
Please have a look at your hedges and bushes which overhang the public footpath and cut them back if necessary and check that there are no twigs or nettles protruding from your property which might harm a child in a push chair. While you're out and about, please also check that your house name or number is clearly visible from the road, just in case you need the emergency services (e.g. an ambulance).

4. Basketball
Following the very successful meeting held recently, there will be a second meeting to discuss the establishment of a Basketball Club on Monday 1 June at 7.30pm at Lyminge Village Hall. Everyone is most welcome to attend, whether you are a past or present player or just considering this lively sport.

5. The Next Parish Walk
Bernard Wood will be leading the next Parish Walk on Sunday 21 June at 10.00am from the Post Office car park. Everyone is welcome to join him. Please ring 862053 for information on the route etc.

6. Highways
Mr. Nye, a Maintenance Engineer from Kent County Council, spoke at the Annual Parish Meeting. Under the recent reorganisations Lyminge is now covered by the Mid Kent Highways Management Unit which is based at High Halden (not Barham, as previously). A number of highway problems were discussed with him. If anyone has a question about highway matters, or wishes to report problems (e.g. potholes in the road), please ring Dave Coupland on 01233 850216, fax 01233 850694.

Community Policing
During the next few month there will be a number of road checks in your area aimed at vehicle and document offences. In June we will be concentrating on vehicle defects, tyres, lights etc., so if you have a fault, fix it now. We would also like to hear from any organisation that is staging an event, i.e. a summer fair. Please give us the dates - we would like to help if we can. Reminder - the Police Surgery at Lyminge Library is open on Mondays from 3.00pm to 4.00pm and Thursdays 6.00pm to 7.00pm. Pc Richard Lester and Psc Jack Balchin. Telephone 289176.

Neighbourhood Watch
Owing to a recent spate of shed break-ins, it would be wise to consider purchasing a shed alarm. They are available from Neighbourhood Watch at Deal Police Station and cost approximately £6.00 per alarm. Tel. 01304 218151.

Reports

Lyminge W.I.
At our meeting on Tuesday 12 May we discussed the two resolutions for the year. The first was, "Should they build on old sites or should they use the Green Belt area". The second was, "Should young children be kept off school to look after sick relatives". The results now go on to the Triennial meeting at Brighton. Lyminge came second in last month's competition for a face mask at the Group Meeting at Lower Hardres. Last month's competition, "the most words from 'Correspondence'" was won by Mrs Hughes, Mrs. Childs second and Mrs. Longley third.

Lyminge Senior Citizens Club
We had a most enjoyable afternoon at Notcutts Garden Centre near Maidstone. After many cold, wet days the sun came out for us. Many thanks to our visitors who helped fill our coach.

Lyminge Car Park Petition
507 signatures - what a tremendous result! This surely shows the degree of frustration experienced by so many of us over the congestion in the car park. I would like to thank the shopkeepers and the Library for their co-operation and also the 507 people who signed the petition.
I have had a meeting with Mr. Kim Hills who is in charge of car parks for Shepway District Council, and at the same time I gave him a copy of the petition. I suggested a number of schemes, but as anticipated, the SDC, although they now agree there is a problem, plead poverty and are reluctant to spend any money. I have also given a copy of the petition to Mr. Colin Auld, the Clerk to Lyminge Parish Council.
With thanks again to all whom supported the petition. Let's all hope that people-power will help to bring about some early changes so that those local people who want to park their cars in the car park and support our village can do so. Adele Entwistle.

Age Concern, Elham Rural
Age Concern, Elham Rural, wishes to thank Mick Hogbin for doing the sponsored walk around Elham on Sunday 12th April. This year the sum raised was £225.00. Well done Mick!
Thank you to all of you who gave so generously. We greatly appreciate the support we receive from local people. All the money raised goes to maintain the services we provide in the Day Centre for our elderly folk.

Sibton Park Cricket Club
By the middle of May the warm sunshine had brought out the best in our batsmen, with a century and three half-centuries being scored. On his debut as 2nd XI League Captain, David Stewart excelled with 118 n.o. against Tenterden in the Woolwich Kent League.
Paul Fox held the batting together with a battling 52 runs against Westerham in the WKL 1st XI game and fine bowling by Captain, Paul McLeary, Andy Tutton and Trevor Lewis gained 'the Park' an admirable win.
Martin Wren continued to show his prowess with a controlled 54 runs against Old Stacians 1st XI and Nigel Arnold scored 64 runs against Old Stacians 2nd XI.
The bowlers have had to maintain good line and length control on the superb pitches prepared by our groundsman, Geoff Kirk, but backed up by good fielding and team spirit, the 'supreme master', Micky Edwards with 6 for 38, the 'reborn veteran', John Murrell (5 for 19) have dominated the opposition batsmen.
Our Matchball Sponsors for May were, Six Mile Garage and Frederic Hall and Co. We thank them for their support.
100 Club winners for May were; £25 - E. Edwards, £10 - R. Hartley, £5 - K. Betts.
For any information concerning the Cricket Club, contact Peter McKen (Secretary) on 862697.

Report - Visit to Thompson's Nursery
On Tuesday 21 April a large group from the Society visited Thompson's Nursery, Stone Street. They we shown round by Peter Alexander, Manager, including some of the propagation and nursery production areas. An evening when all who attended learned a lot. The evening finished with coffee and a lively question and answer session. Our sincere thanks to Mr. Alexander.

Report - Visit to Capel Manor
On Tuesday 19 May, another group from the Society made a visit to Capel Manor, Enfield. With perfect weather, everyone had a perfect day with something for everybody - plants, flowers, garden, equipment on display, with much to be learned in the "Which" trials grounds. Quite differently, there were historic gardens, special needs gardens, theme gardens and gardens for difficult sites on display.

Suttons Petunia Competition
The Society is entered in the Suttons Seeds "Prism" National Petunia Competition. Regional judging on 6 June, National finals 11 June 1998.

Gardening Tips for June
Water, feed and shade indoor plants. Early Action dealing with weeds will save work later. This is the month to complete planting out plants for summer. Should your Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Camellias, Hydrangeas show signs of leaves yellowing, apply sequestrated iron. Start watching for aphids, whitefly, and blackfly. After a mild winter we are likely to see more of these.

Apple Jack

A "recipt" (sic) handed down through five generations of Bobbie Session's family, it uses windfall and old apples - so put it to one side for the autumn!

Ingredients 3lb cooking apples
2lb sugar
3 lemons
6 quarts (i.e. 12 pints) of fresh spring water (we'll have to make do with bottled water!)

Method
Pass the entire apples (cut into quarters) through a mincer (or food processor) and then tip into a clean (sterilised) bucket and add the water. Leave for a week stiring WELL daily. Strain and mix with grated lemon rind, the juice of all the lemons and the sugar. Leave for 24 hours. Strain and bottle into shatterproof bottles (lemonade or coke plastic bottles are perfect). It is drinkable after a week and is a lovely soft homemade drink. Bobbie suggests that if it is kept until Christmas it is better/perfect for grown-ups!
