Excellent Ofsted Report
for
Lyminge Pre-School
Lyminge Pre-School has welcomed its latest
Ofsted report, which described it as 'high quality' and noted
the: 'staff work positively and enthusiastically with all
children, encouraging them to be confident, independent and self
assured.' I spoke to Julie Murphy, the Supervisor, to find out
exactly what it is that they are doing so right.
She didn't narrow their success down to one thing but said,
'Everyone works brilliantly together.' She went on to say they
work well as a team and staff know each of the children well.
A typical day at the nursery might start with a half an hour
of organised mayhem; that is, the children ride around the
Village Hall on bikes, play on the see-saw or slide or perhaps
draw or read a book. Then the 'Rainbows' (children 3 and 4
years) separate to have a session to prepare them for primary
school while the younger children continue to play in the
classroom. During the morning session, no matter what the
weather, they try to go outside in the garden play area at the
side of the classroom. Julie explained the morning sessions are
mostly 'child initiated learning1, which is children to deciding
what they will do, except for the end of morning story or
singing session. After their lunch, the afternoon session
changes to more 'adult initiated learning', which means as its
name suggests, because there are less children. In the
afternoons the staff have more opportunity to work with
individual children, and so they might try a little cookery or
woodwork - things which need closer supervision.
From my visit to the Pre-School I gained the impression it
was a relaxed place (how this is possible when children are
involved I shall never know!) and the staff are all
enthusiastic. All the time the CD machine was switched on, and
Julie tells me, There is always music here.'

Lyminge Day 2005 Success
By Sarah Huntley
On May 14th we held another successful
Lyminge Day and a good time was had by all. Jubilee field was
decorated with bunting and Roman banners and Roman costumes of
all descriptions could be seen! There were funfair rides and
stalls, a bouncy castle and inflatable slide, crazy golf,
crockery smashing, tombola, Caesar's sandal sling, coconuts,
craft stalls and falconry displays to name just a few of the
attractions. It was certainly cold and windy, but it didn't rain
and there was always the beer tent, barbeque and hog roast to
warm you up!
Congratulations to Wendy Gredley's team who won the "It's a
knockout" contest, despite a lot of good natured cheating by the
other teams!!
A huge thank you should go to all members of the Lyminge
Village Hall Social Committee and other helpers who put in so
much hard work to make the day a success. Thank you also to all
of you who came along and supported the event and helped us
raise vital funds for the village hall. We hope to see you all
again next year for another great day and, hopefully, a little
sunshine too! |

Dear Editor: We who live in the
village of Lyminge, and those beyond, have much to be
thankful for in being able to share the many facilities
prepared and offered to us. Think of cricket, bowls,
bridge, gardening and historical societies and the
various fellowship groups in church and outside. There
are many others.
The umbrella facility is surely the Age Concern
development under the auspices and management of Mrs
Lisa Hodden and her staff, who provide and deliver daily
lunches among other items of real concern.
It must have been an arduous task to manage this
during the days of extensions to the A.C. Building.
Improvisation must have been the key word with a
possible hiccup or problem, carefully hidden from
everyone in the facility. One hears only praise from us
for the organisers and the groups of people who called
to deliver the meals in all weathers. They did literally
brave the elements of snow, wind and rain,-and always
with a smile.
I understand the extensions of the building are up to
schedule (how rarely do we hear that, today, of any
enterprise!) and that Lisa and her staff are pleased
with the job.
We, in our team, have pleasure in expressing to Mrs
Lisa Hodden, Matthew, Lisa, Sue, Mark and all the others
including the ladies in the kitchen, our appreciation of
the manner in which they have assured the success of
this Age Concern enterprise so far, and all with a smile
of good companionship, Many thanks to you all.

Dear Editor: Thank you to all the
people who were "looking out" for my missing cat Thomas.
Sadly he was found on Brady Road - yet another victim
killed by a car. The kind lady who found him has herself
lost 5 cats to the traffic on this road.
My family and I are most grateful to everyone
concerned for their support on Thomas's behalf.
Mrs D.K. Barnes
Lyminge Pre-School
The staff and committee would like to thank those
villagers who donated their Tesco and Sainsburys
vouchers to the Pre-School. Hopefully we will have
collected sufficient numbers of Tesco vouchers to
purchase a desperately needed new printer/copier. The
Sainsburys vouchers will be used to purchase balls and
other gross motor skill physical equipment.
We would also like to thank the businesses in the
village that have very kindly donated prizes for our
raffles. We are very grateful for all the support given
to the Pre-School. |

Lyminge Festival
25 – 26 June 2005
Gardens, flowers, quilts and scarecrows!
Well, where shall we start?!
How about scarecrows? Anyone in
the Parish of Lyminge is invited to make a scarecrow for
display – somewhere! The “somewhere” could be in your
garden (visible from the street) or even a public place.
Imagination is what you need. The scarecrow could
reflect something of village life, it could be a
“comment on society”, it could be witty – it could be
something to scare the crows off. If you need straw to
bulk out your “creation’s” body, please contact the
Lyminge Association via Glenn Floyd on 862732. There is
a bit of a competition to this – the best Scarecrow’s
owner will be awarded a prize based on viewers’ choice.
To vote, you will need to complete the form on the
Garden Safari Passport and drop it into one of the
various voting boxes around the village – or through the
letterbox of Lyminge Hardware Store. For more
information, please contact Liz Coleman on 863197.
The Lyminge Garden Safari is
gaining a good reputation in Kent and is always
advertised on BBC Radio Kent. It involves some 15 or so
gardens (we’re not sure how many at the moment!) in
Lyminge and Etchinghill. Gardens will be open between
10.00am and 4.00pm on both Saturday and Sunday (but not
all gardens will be open on each day). A very
interesting variety of gardens is guaranteed. You will
find stalls, plants for sale, teas and so on in various
gardens, for various charities. “Passports” for the
Safari, at a cost of £3.00 per adult (children under 16
free) will be available from each garden or Lyminge
Hardware Store.
Lyminge Parish Church is holding
their flower festival at the same, with a wedding theme.
The flowers are guaranteed to be fabulous and the scents
– well….. sensational! And the teas will be TERRIFIC!
At the Lyminge Methodist Church Hall
Ethelburga Quilters invite you to view a range of
“textile art” Sounds pretentious? Not at all! Quilts
aren’t just for beds, they often make fabulous wall
hangings. Oil paintings and watercolours aren’t the only
things which can make a house a home. Unusually for an
exhibition, Ethelburga Quilters also invite you to see
work in production during their monthly workshop. Come
and watch – ask questions if you would like. There may
be fabrics and threads for sale. Open from 10.00am –
4.00pm Saturday only. Entry free.

close with a fish and chip supper.

ETCHINGHILL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
VILLAGE SIGN
It is hoped to erect a Village Sign (similar to
Lyminge) to reflect the heritage of Etchinghill. Ideas
and sketches are invited from our residents which should
be delivered to Rodney Watts, 14 St Mary’s Drive by
Saturday 25th June. These will be displayed at the
Anniversary event and a public vote for selection made
that afternoon.
RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION TABLE AT BOOT FAIR
The Association are taking part in the Boot Fair on
6th August at the Cricket Ground and would welcome any
sensible and saleable goods to help raise funds for the
Village amenities and events. Items can be delivered to
Wendy, Stourbrook, Canterbury Road (Tel:863495) or
Barbara, Cherry Tree Cottage, Canterbury (Tel:862873)
P.S. The Cricket Club, in association with the Golf Club
and the ERA hope to have found a solution to the parking
and congestion prolems recently experienced for which we
are grateful.
ADOPTION OF MERIDEN PARK
Residents of Meriden Walk, St Mary’s Close, St
Mary’s Drive and Chapel Walk will be pleased to know
that the adoption has now been finalised, effective from
6th May. The local authority should shortly then be
taking proper responsibility for lighting, road
sweeping/cleaning and all the other normal facilities.
ETCHINGHILL W.I.
The meeting on 17th May was chaired by Mrs Gill Le Cras.
We were saddened to hear of the death of a very long
standing member, Joan Morris.
As this was a Resolutions Meeting much discussion took
place on these two items
1. Farm gate milk prices ( why are farmers paid so
little for their milk?)
2. Care of the environment
Delegates will vote on these at the A.G.M. at the Royal
Albert Hall and will then go before Parliament. The
competition for a Flower arrangement – max 4” was won by
Marilyn Norton
The group meeting in Folkestone was oustandingly
interesting, amusing and informative when Joyce Yates
talked to us about Billington Sugar. The competition for
a decorated egg was won by Barbara (our President)
Our next meeting will be on 21st June when our speaker
will be Mrs V Atkins on ‘Childhood memories of an
evacuee in Germany and Austria’.
On the trading stall in June the theme will be ‘Plants’
and in July it will be ‘Home-made produce’ (get busy
ladies!).

Lyminge Pre-School Playgroup Reg. Charity No 1029226
In February this year the OFSTED inspector was so
impressed by the Lyminge pre-school setting that she
awarded us with the highest grade possible! This is only
achieved by 15% of all pre-schools and nurseries in the
country! She felt “The education provision at Lyminge
pre-school is of high quality and staff work positively
and enthusiastically with all children, encouraging them
to be confident, independent and self assured”. We were
very pleased with the result and as leader of the
Lyminge pre-school I would like to thank all the staff,
parents and of course the children for being brilliantly
supportive. This term has been a busy one as we have
been learning about colours and shapes as well as
different cultures and festivals. This topic is
supported by visitors to the pre-school and walks around
the village. We have also been encouraging spontaneous
creative activities in addition to our curriculum as
further support to the children’s learning. Our
pre-school is a day care setting open 9am to 1pm on
Mondays and9am to 3pm for the rest of the week in term
time. We take children from the age of 2 years old –
toilet trained or not and we offer specialist sessions
for the older children in readiness for school. We meet
exacting standards set by OFSTED, are members of the
pre-school alliance and have a good liaison with Lyminge
Primary School. If you are interested in sending your
child to us then please ring me Julie Murphy (863834) or
Lynn (862831) or simply pop in for a visit. Look forward
to seeing you.

will be provided for your use. Just bring some
flat-soled shoes so as not to harm the green.
This sport is suitable for ALL AGES. Come alone, with a
friend or in a family group – whatever combination you
will be warmly welcomed.
Qualified coaches Sue Foster (862779) and Harry Storey
(862044) will be pleased to answer any queries you may

Parish Council News
|
SKATEBOARD &
TENNIS COURT FACILITY
SKATEBOARD FACILITY
The Parish Council have debated the requirements of
young people in Lyminge and the rest of the Parish. The
Parish Council in partnership with the KCC Community
Warden, Gary Harrison and Campaigner Eileen Hall meet
with a group of young people recently to discuss their
wishes. After further discussion at Full Parish Council
it was agreed that we would seek quotations for a small
facility as the first step. Due to the fact that Eileen
Hall and the young people have raised almost £2000 for
the project and considering the input from people at the
Parish Plan Road Shows/3 wishes consultations we feel
that there is a genuine need and support for a facility.
Quotations will be sought for a half pipe, grinders,
suitable surface and seating.
The Parish Council will also investigate funding sources
and set up a sub committee including young people to
produce a proposal for consideration at Parish Council.
TENNIS COURT
Once again the after consultation people within the
Parish have over the years asked for a Tennis Court
facility. The Parish Council have noted that the
Basketball Court is rarely used and feel this could
provide a cost effective solution to sighting this
facility.
Quotations are also being sought for converting this
area and the sub committee will also present on this
subject.
