Garden Safari - 21st and 22nd June

At least 12 attractive and interesting gardens in and around Lyminge will be open to visitors during the
Garden Safari weekend. To visit the gardens simply purchase a passport for £2.50 in advance or on the day
from shops in Lyminge, or on the day from the school or Bedingfield House, High Street, Lyminge. The
passport gives full details of the locations of each of the gardens, and tells you if they are open for one day or
all weekend.
The 21st is also the date of the Methodist Church flower festival and the Ethelburga Quilters display in the
school hall. So, a visit to both of these can be included in your day.
Please join us and help make this a very successful and enjoyable event.

Parish Council
the End of an Era

As you may be aware, the new Parish Council sat for the first time on 19th May. Some familiar faces remain, whilst weare joined by 3 new Councillors, 1 new Parish Clerk and 2 vacant seats. After the sad loss of Cllr Peter Brockett last year and the resignation of Cllr Bob Gay, 4 long serving members of thecouncil stood down, joined also by the Parish Clerk. Between them they have served the community for over 34 years and jointly clocked up over 128 years of dedicated service. Colin Auld, Clerk to the Parish 26 years. Cllr Stephen Cross 16 years, Cllr Des Boughton 20 years, Cllr Edgar Taylor 32 years and last but no means least, Cllr Alan Boughton a lengthy 34 years.
I know that the current Parish Council will miss (heir commitment and wealth of knowledge but have been assured by them all that should we need to tap into their knowledge they will be only too pleased to oblige. Alan Boughton has also agreed to continue his famous introductory tours of the Parish for any new Councillor wishing to share in his vast knowledge of related history, locations, facilities and past characters.
I doubt if the Parish will see the likes of these gentlemen again and I am sure the whole Parish will join in thanking them for their service and wish them all the very best for their futures. The Parish will be forever in your debt!                          Cllr Glenn Floyd

The editor is pleased to receive two letters for publication this month and welcomes correspondence for future issues. Please note that a name and address must be supplied, although these need not be published. Anonymous letters will not be accepted. The editor reserves the right to edit or refuse letters.

"Dear Editor,
On going to collect my son from cubs on Tuesday evening, I was astonished and appalled to see a group of youths playing with skateboards and roller skates in the top car park behind Lyminge Village Hall. They had a wooden ramp in the centre of the carpark and regardless of the cars attempting to park they were still skating all across the roadway. As a concerned parent, I find it most distressing that they were playing in such a dangerous place.
I understand that they need somewhere to play and that it needs to be out of the way, but this is so dangerous and "an accident waiting to happen" springs to mind. Please boys, stop skating when you know that cubs etc. are coming out and cars will be around."                             Name and address supplied.

"Dear Editor,
I am writing to voice my concerns about dogs running out of control. Most dogs have well-trained owners who keep their dogs under control, or on a lead and do not allow them to rush up to people, particularly small children or nervous dogs, with teeth bared. However, it seems that there are a few owners who have little respect for others. They cannot, or do not, control their dogs. Some people and some dogs are petrified when an unleashed dog rushes towards them. It is particularly frightening for a small child to be approached by any dog, particularly if it is larger than the child. As for other dogs, any dog can become aggressive or nervous when approached at speed by another dog. Do you want a fight on your hands, or worse still, have to pay vets bills? This situation is quite serious in certain areas of Etchinghill. Please keep your dog on a lead if it does not come to heel when called."                                                 Name and address supplied.

The Rude Mechanical Theatre Company will be visiting Lyminge to perform their latest play "The Wife of Bath" outdoors on Tayne Field. The company are rapidly becoming respected for their vital physical style, brightly coloured costumes and
exhilarating live music. The actors regularly work in the West End and Broadway, but are specially funded to work in villages. Although the subject matter is always "adult" (the "seven deadly sins"), because it is like watching a fairy tale, it is accessible even to very young children. The show starts at 7.45pm, but people often come early to
have picnics. Come dressed for a cool or showery evening just in case. Tickets can be bought in the village at Gills Hardware or from the central box office on 01323 501260. Tickets are £8 for adults and £5 for children and students.

Every Wednesday evening (from 7.00pm - 8.00pm) a
few friends meet together under the guidance of Danny Price to speak French for an hour. The level of French spoken is very varied! Vraimant! But, we manage to discuss things as varied as the geology of Kent, devices which cut rings off fingers, a comparison of health services -- and the toad population of Beachborough! These weekly hours are very light-hearted, but Danny helps us with some of the words and grammar"- and we do learn I If you want to brush up your French before the summer holidays, give Liz a ring on 863197 to find out in

Garden Hints
Due to wide scale building in the countryside and intensive farming methods birds, and now we hear the bumble bee, rely more and more on the gardener for food. Take time to research what plants are best grown to help sustain wildlife. Bumble bees favour lavender, foxgloves and clover among other things. The birds favour old fashioned cottage plants and seed heads, so don't be too rigorous with dead heading.
