Jubilee Celebrations

Monday 3 June
The Committee of the Lyminge Association
welcomes anyone who would wish to join them, to Tayne Field from about 9.30pm (yes!...in the evening!) to an informal gathering prior to lighting the Beacon.  In Lyminge we are in the sector of Beacon-lighting for 10.15pm.  We will erect a small marquee and have a barbecue lit – so if you would like to bring your own food and refreshments, you will be able to cook on the barbecue.  Hope to see you there!  More information from Liz on 863197.

The Jubilee Coins
The coins are now on order – thank you to everyone for responding with names of children who are eligible for this small token of the Jubilee.  We will arrange despatch to everyone as soon as they are delivered to us – please be patient; it may take a little while before we receive them.  There is a chance that there may be a few for sale once we have allocated coins to all on the list, we will announce this in a forthcoming Newsletter if it is the case.

News from the Parish Council

Quiet Lanes
Lyminge is one of eight parish councils being invited to participate in a local “Quiet Lanes” initiative, which is being co-ordinated by Postling Parish Council, and funded by Kent County Council and other agencies. The project would identify a network of lanes, bridleways, and footpaths to create circuits for walkers, riders, and cyclists. Each household will be sent an information pack and questionnaire to help identify suitable lanes and paths.

News from Kent County Council
Councillor John Palmer reported that KCC is proposing to introduce a six-term school year from 2003, and will be asking parents for their views.
KCC is funding ten community wardens to support the police service. The wardens, one of whom will be based in Elham, will target petty crime and bad behaviour. The budget for Kent Police has been increased, so that 100 more officers can be recruited by the end of 2003. The increase will include 50 extra rural officers.

News from Shepway District Council
Councillor David Monk reported that a firm has been appointed to build the new shopping precinct in Folkestone. Work has now started on the new conference centre attached to the Leas Cliff Hall.
Wheelie bins have been introduced across the District, which has resulted in a substantial decrease in the need for street cleaning.

Code of conduct
Lyminge Parish Council has adopted the code of conduct proposed by Shepway District Council. As a result, all parish councillors have registered their financial and business interests.

Next meeting
The next Parish Council meeting is on 24 June, 7.30 pm at Lyminge Village Hall.

Letter to the Editor

From Mrs. Janet Turner

“I was quite saddened to read the article in the Times suggesting that Lyminge was a crime and drug-ridden village.  I am not naïve enough to imagine that drug-taking and crimes do not happen here, but not on the grand scale suggested in the article.

“In my 15 years in the village I have found it to be a safe and law-abiding society and I for one, am certainly not afraid to walk through the village after dark.

“May I suggest whoever spoke to the reporter read the crime figures published by the Police for the Shepway Area for the year 2000-2001 if they need re-assurance.”

Theatre of the Green Tour 2002
The Comedy of Babi Babbett
All those who attended the Company’s previous production last year spoke very highly of the production – and are looking forward to this year’s!  Despite only a small cast, this multi-talented company has clearly demonstrated that they have honed travelling theatre to a fine art.
Traditional characters such as, Pantalone, Harlequin and Colombine will be recognised in this riotous new play, where the setting is 1793 Islington.  Babi Babett is the servant of Sydney Lean, a rich but deeply mean retired goldsmith – and the plot seems to have something to do with sausages (!).
Bring your own garden chairs and/or rugs and a picnic.  Tickets will cost £9.00 for adults, £8.00 for senior citizens and £5.00 for children, students and the un-waged.  There are group rates for families and groups of 10 or more.  Further information from 01323 501260

Merrymouth’s Field.

Amongst the Lyminge charters and deeds in the British Library Manuscripts department there is a grant by Thomas atte Wode of Canterbury to Thomas Oldefeld of Longeheigge of the parish of Lyminge of eleven acres of land called Merymouthysfeld in the parish of Lyminge.  The deed says that the field lay between the lands of John Scot, knight and Hamon Kete towards the East and land of the heirs of Andrew Wodehyll and the land of the manor of Sypton towards the South and a certain field called Paynesfeld towards the West and land lately Thomas Rode towards the North.  The land had previously been purchased by Thomas atte Wode from John Derby late of Canterbury deceased.

The document was dated at Lyminge 15 October 1461 and witnessed by Richard Wodehyll chaplain, John Stokys junior, Hamon Kete, James Wodehyll, John Jenkyns junior.[1]

Longeheigge is identified as Longage by Dr Paul Cullen, The Place-Names of the Lathes of St Augustine & Shipway (Sussex University Thesis, 1997) and J. K. Wallenberg, The Place-Names of Kent, (Uppsala 1934) taken from their only reference a Feet of Fine of 1322.  From Old English the word lang ‘long’ + hecg ‘hedge, enclosure’.  In this document at the Public Record Office William Edwy of Hethe [Hythe] purchased, the day after the feast of All Souls in the sixteenth year of the reign of King Edward II [4 November 1322], from Stephen son of Stephen of Longehegge and Joanna his wife for £20, 12 acres of land, 54 acres of pasture, 2 acres of wood, 2s 2d in rent, the rent of one hen and the half of one messuage with appurtenances all in Lyminge (here spelt Lymmyng’).[2]  Cullen comments that this new form is useful in that it confirms that the <h> of the 1322 Longehegge should indeed be taken seriously, thus supporting the derivation from OE hecg ‘a hedge’.

Sypton can be identified as the manor of Sibton but I have been unable to find a modern reference to either Paynesfeld or Merymouthysfeld either through the tithe

apportionment of 1840 or the six inch ordnance survey maps of the 1920 period.  It is also interesting that we have land North of Sibton formerly owned by Thomas Rode.  Persons of this name in or before the 14th century are said to have taken their name from the area of what is now Rhodes Farm and Rhodes Minnis. Minnis is derived from gemænnes meaning land held in common and Rode from OE rodu, a clearing in a forest or assart.

I had originally transcribed Merymouthysfeld and then decided, that as u and n are indistinguishable in this hand, that Merymonthysfeld sounded much better. Allusions to Mayfield and summer pastures I thought .  However, I am very grateful to Paul Cullen for setting me back on the right track.[3]  Cullen says that this is derived from a surname Merrimouth, (OE myrge 'merry' + mūð 'mouth') which is found elsewhere in Kent.[4]

Following this up I found Reaney had in fact taken it from a Final Concord dated in the Octave of St Hilary 12 Edward II, which means between 23 January & 12 February 1319 between Thomas de Boywyk’ the plaintiff and Master Adam Murimouth’ deforciant of 1 messuage, 1 carucate of land, 16 acres of wood and 30s rent and the rent of 50 hens, with appurtenances in Elham.[5]  So just up the road and justifying Cullen’s assertion that he thought it was very unlikely to be variant of Merriment, itself usually assumed to be a variant (though he haven't seen any data to support this assumption) of Merriman (OE myrge 'merry' + mann 'man') which is found in Kent.[6]

What of Richard Wodehyll the chaplain?  He was a priest possibly of a chapel within the parish church of Lyminge; although no mention is made of a chantry by Hussey, it may be that his stay was brief in accordance with the funds provided by his benefactor.[7]  His main duty would have been to say or sing Mass for the souls of the founder possibly also his family and friends and he may also act as a curate for the parish and even a schoolmaster.  Hussey, does however in another book record that in 1548 a rent of 2s 2d yearly was payable from unspecified lands to maintain a lamp in the church.[8]

A glance at the will indexes for the 15th century show a number of Woodhill and variant entries for the parish of Lyminge (the years are that of probate, normally fairly soon after the decease of the testator) and one may relate to one of the witnesses to our deed.  Henry Wodell, 1464; William Wodhill, 1465; Agnes Wodehill, 1476; James Wodehell, 1477, John Wodell, 1483.  Hopefully further investigation of these wills may mention Richard.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards.  We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating.  So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again!  Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market.  Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
