Community Matters

Lyminge Association News

One of the Lyminge Association’s Aims is to "encourage cultural, sporting, recreational and educational activities in the village". To that end, the Association has been able to make grants to a number of clubs, societies and other organisations in the parish in order to help them progress. The Association also endeavours to keep an up-to-date list of all the local organisations, with their contact names and addresses, a copy of which is kept in the Library. This is available to everyone to refer to, and especially newcomers to the parish who wish to join a particular organisation. If your club has had changes to its committee recently, please let Mike Foxon know on 862073.

In order to help promote our local clubs and societies, a "Publicity Event" is to be held in September 2001. Look out for information arriving shortly for an event that might help to increase your attendance or find new helpers.

Parish Council News

This is the first of a regular column, with news from the Parish Council. If you want to know more, you will start to find minutes of the Parish Council meetings in the Library as well as on the notice-board by the Post Office, or come along to a meeting and find out for yourself; the next one will be on 25th June at 7.30pm, at Lyminge Village Hall.

Traffic Calming

You might have seen in the local paper that Peter Carroll, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate has presented a petition to the County Council from the "residents of Lyminge". News to you too?

Last year Parish Councillors met with the Traffic Manager from Shepway District Council. The Parish Council wanted the introduction of better signing for the 30mph limit through Lyminge. One immediate outcome was the yellow boards around the signs to make them stand out more. The Parish Council also wanted 30mph signs painted on the road on red tarmac, and other measures to emphasise the speed limit. We are still waiting to hear whether these have been agreed by KCC.

When Shepway took over more responsibility for local roads, they asked Parish Councils for their priorities. Lyminge Parish Council included amongst theirs, a speed limit through Rhodes Minnis. An earlier approach to KCC had met the response that there were not enough houses to warrant one. However, limits will now be introduced: 40 mph from Sibton Park to the top of Longage Hill and then 30mph to Monsoon Lodge.

The Parish Council had also asked about a zebra crossing by the Post Office (too close to the bend, according to KCC), and an island opposite Wentworth Close.

Public Convenience

Shepway DC wrote to the Parish Council saying they were planning to close the loos in the village – unless we wanted to pay them to keep them open and maintained. The Parish Council wrote back objecting strongly to the plan. The latest position is that Shepway are reconsidering the move.

What’s on in Shepway

You might have seen the leaflets that used to be in the Library with a monthly list of events in the area. Shepway DC have withdrawn these, saying that the information is now on their website (www.shepway.gov.uk), in response to the Government’s push to get information on-line. However, the website contains much less detail about events than did the leaflet. The tourism team at Shepway say that new software due later this year will allow more information to be published on the web site, which is not much consolation if you don’t have access to the Internet.

Lyminge Handbells at Lyminge Day
The Lyminge Handbells group were proud to show off the newly refurbished bells at Lyminge Day of the 12th of May. We were pleased to find Michael Howard among the spectators as he had previously donated to our refurbishment fund and showed great interest in the transformation of the bells. We have already received bookings for other local events during the summer and are willing to attend private functions for a small fee. If you would like to hear the sound of our super, newly refurbished bells at a special celebration or family event, just give us a ‘ring’. We have already started taking bookings for Christmas. Please let us know some weeks in advance if you can and we will do our best to come along. Evenings and weekends only please. We also hope to recruit more ringers this year to make it easier for us to attend all the events we are asked to play at. If you would like to book the ringers, or want to have a go yourself just call either Ro Edmond on 863201 or Stuart Hunnisett on 862530 for details.

Reports

Etchinghill W.I.

At our May meeting we discussed the resolutions that were to be put forward at the I.G.M. in Cardiff. The competition for a resolution for our own W.I. was won by Jennie Halden. Our monthly lunches are popular – we go to various venues in the area.

The Lyminge Senior Citizens’ Club

We enjoyed Mrs. Vallée from Hythe speaking to us on the position she holds as "Pearly Pride of Hythe". Mrs. Vallée arrived in full costume; skirt, jacket, handbag all covered in pearl buttons. With her hat covered in Ostrich feathers, a delightful picture she made! We were told how the Pearly Kings and Queens were formed in London and the work they do for charity after seeing the poor children in London at that time. Their work still continues today, even abroad. D. Bain.

Lyminge W.I.

Our May evening was entitled, "What are Resolutions", and inspired some lively debate after Barbara Gibson told the meeting about this year’s resolutions and the background. Certainly, some of our members missed the opportunity to discuss matters with our M.P. and Shadow Home Secretary when he visited Lyminge Day.

The Sargent Cancer Charity for Children

‘Blue Bear’ and his old friend, William, would like to thank Roy and Maureen Copping of Haxtons Estate Agents for being their foster parents over the last six months. Both teddy bears proudly sent the proceeds of their stay, amounting to £330.44, to the Sargent Cancer Charity for Children. If you would like a collection box for you to put your loose change into, please contact Bobbie Sessions on 862481

Lyminge Day

The Organisers and the Management Committee of the Village Hall would like to thank everyone who came along to enjoy Lyminge Day.
WASN’T IT A WONDERFUL DAY?!!
Special grateful thanks go to all of our helpers on the Day – and on the day before in preparing the field and on Sunday for help with clearing up. Thank you also to our very generous sponsors; Haxtons, Stennings, Ray Hill (our local milkman), Hythe Plant, Plumb Centre (Ashford) and Cosyburn of Hythe. We hope to have raised in excess of £2,000 to help fund improvements to the Hall.

Gardening Hints

June is a lovely month with foliage fresh and green, lawns looking lush, hanging baskets and patio pots put in place and ready to burst into flower and colourful annuals planted out. It’s also a busy time for gardeners, but with long, light, and hopefully, sunny evenings, no task seems too onerous. Also it is a month when aphids proliferate, so in the greenhouse try planting the herb Dill and a few Marigolds to help combat the invasion and a quick blast from a can of fly spray just before closing the greenhouse door at night can help too. Clear away foliage from the spring flowering bulbs and prune back winter flowering shrubs and just enjoy the garden after all the winter’s rain.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating. So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again! Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market. Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
