July 1999
The Valley Carnival
Elham Valley Lions Club would like to thank everyone who participated
in the Valley Carnival on Sunday 6 June. By an absolute miracle the
dreadful weather ceased just in time for the start and those who processed
did so in glorious sunshine (and raincoats and wellies!). A lively beat
was produced by the percussion band, enthusiastically co-ordinated by
Alistair Bailey. The band led the procession of lions and horses, a steam
engine with masses of carriages - and a sea monster!
"Passengers" on the railway modelled a range of extraordinary
millinery. The procession terminated at Tayne Field where a mini-fun-fair
and refreshments had been arranged to entertain all.
The design and co-ordination of the production of the many items
sported for the carnival was very ably done by Liz Bailey and the Whole
Hog Celebratory Arts. Next year the carnival is intended to be taken to
all the villages in the Elham Valley and will be assisted by a grant of £10,000
from the Millennium Commission.
Lyminge Primary School Celebrates its 150th Birthday
During the week of 14th to 19th June Lyminge School celebrated its
150th birthday. During the week a "Victorian Day" was held, when
almost everyone dressed up as Victorian pupils - and the staff were
strict, fearsome Victorian teachers. The weather was warm and sunshiny,
which was almost a shame because all the Victorian clothes were very hot!
At play times all the children played with appropriate toys - cane hoops
and marbles and chanted Victorian skipping rhymes etc. At the end of play,
a bell was rung instead of the usual whistle-blowing.
Speaking of bells, the old school bell which hung above the roof of the
old school, had been rediscovered and is now suspended in the foyer. The
foundation stone of the old building has also been given to the school. To
mark the week, a brief history of Lyminge School has been written, copies
of which may still be available from the school office at a cost of £2.00.
On Friday 18th June a special assembly was held which was attended by
all the governors of the school. The special guest was Mr. Rupert Briscoe,
who represented the Dioceses, and who presented the school with a special
certificate to commemorate the event. At the end of assembly he presented
all the pupils with a souvenir badge. Lunch that day was held outside and
the special guest was the oldest known ex-pupil of the school, Mrs. Aris,
who cut the birthday cake assisted by Thomas Collie, the youngest boy in
the school.
On Saturday 19th June an open morning was held. All villagers were
invited to come and browse the old photographs and memorabilia and to
visit the classrooms. This was very popular, especially with
"old" pupils and their parents.
The Lyminge Millennium Draw
The raffle was drawn at school during the open morning. 546 books of
raffle tickets were bought and the funds raised will go towards the
activities and celebrations planned for the millennium year.
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who bought
tickets. A fold-up leaflet is attached to the newsletter, and is available
online at http://www.Lyminge.cjb.net/2000,
which gives a provisional list of all the events planned for the
forthcoming year.

Letters to the Editor
A Big Thank You
"Everyone in the Lyminge area must feel very sad that Mr. and Mrs.
Hayward have retired from the Lyminge Bakery. They not only ran the shop
and delivery service, but they served the public in many other ways; by
their kindness and by shopping and collecting medication for elderly
infirmed people in the community.
"The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Folkestone also has reason to
thank them for their kindness, as every Wednesday for many years, they
supplied a box of bread and cakes for the welfare department of the
Church. Our clients always looked forward to sampling real homemade bakery
and they were sorry that it is not longer available. They wish to thank
Mr. and Mrs. Hayward to their generosity. Each year the Church was
presented with a harvest loaf, which was distributed to the elderly people
of Folkestone, together with the harvest fare.
"Pastor Lombart and members of the Church say a "Big Thank
You" and wish you both a very happy retirement. May God bless you in
your new home."
Dear Editor,
"Around noon on Father's Day recently a large dog was let off its
lead on Tayne/Well field. It crossed the stream, went through one garden
before entering ours. It then got into a rabbit run and savaged our pet
rabbit to death. It made off, pursued by a neighbour. When confronted with
the incident the owner suggested it was our fault for not having our
garden properly secured, showed no remorse and offered not even an
apology.
"You can imagine the distress caused to us and our children. I
dare not contemplate what might have happened if there had been a small
child in the garden. I know this newsletter is delivered to every home in
the village so there is every chance that the dog owner responsible will
read this. We want you to know how much distress you have caused to
several people through your carelessness, made so much worse by your
insensitivity and lack of courtesy. We ask you to reflect on your
responsibilities and to improve the control of your dog."

I have arranged a Neighbourhood Watch meeting for Lyminge, Elham and
Stelling Minnis on Monday 19th July at 7.30pm - 10.00pm in the 'Peggy
Pike' room in Elham Village Hall. At this time, PC Guy Thompson will

Wigley.
Thanks
'Fred' Hartley died quietly at home on Friday 18th June. His family

Big thanks to everyone in Lyminge for the support of their winning
team. Special thanks to our sponsors, to Andy and Sarah (Coach and
Horses), players and supporters (Snowy, Gary and Barry).
Last season was a great success as we won the Division 2 Orion Cup and
were placed fourth in the league. Also the team won another trophy on
Lyminge Day - that's two trophies in 20 years - NOT BAD!
The new season starts this September, so training begins in July on
Wednesday evenings (6.30pm) and Sunday mornings (10.30am-if interested).
New players are welcome (over 17 years). We hope we can count on your
continuous support this season. Contact 862838 or 863165 for further
information.

Gardening Tips for July
Sow pansies and polyanthus, dead-head roses and remove spent heads of
lupins and delphiniums for second flowering. Pinch back herbs to prevent
them flowering and losing flavour. Do a little night gardening - slugs and
snails can be harvested after dark and water is more beneficial at night!
But most importantly this month, put away the tools, get out the lounger,
pour a long drink, relax and enjoy the garden!
