The Ethelburga Well Celebrations
The hundredth birthday of the St. Ethelburga Wellhead is being celebrated on Saturday 26 September (note change of date). The date has been chosen to coincide with Harvest Festival celebrations and will also mark the completion of work by the General Purposes Committee of the Parish Council to renovate and repair it. The party will begin at 11.00am and go on to 3.00pm. The Morris Dancers, "Offcumduns" will be performing two sets during the day and other entertainments are planned.
All Lyminge clubs, societies and associations should have received a letter from the Lyminge Association by now which also contains a piece of material and a pen on which a "wish" for that society should be written, whether it be for the immediate or long-term future (there's nothing wrong with wanting to win the Cup!). All the "wishes" will be hung around the well as part of a larger dressing of flags and banners. If your society has not yet received a "wish" pennant, please let Liz Coleman know (863197). If your society would like a stall or pitch to put on an entertainment please also let Liz know (there is no charge).

By the way, Happy Birthday to St. David and St. George, Church Road - these buildings are also celebrating their centenary this year!

The Millennium Celebrations
The celebrations for the year 2000 are beginning to take shape! There will be something for everyone - and something every month. The Steering Committee is composed of representatives from the Lyminge Association, the Parish Council, the Churches, the Dramatic Society and the School. The next meeting is on Wednesday 5 August at 8.00pm at St. George, Church Road (by kind invitation of David and Honor Hunt-Cooke.

Community Police
Please park your vehicles on the road or in your drive, not on the path. Complaints have been received. July sees a seat-belt campaign in your area - get in the habit of wearing one EVERY journey and parents are responsible for children in the car as well. Whilst on the subject of parents - please make sure you know what your child is up to when he or she goes out with friends. A number of incidents involving damage and nuisance situations have made it necessary for children to be taken home and spoken to with parents. Please make sure it does not happen to yours. Finally, lock up sheds and garages - open doors suggest no one is about - it's easy pickings for would be thieves.

ROTAWALK - SATURDAY 11 JULY

There will be a Sponsored Walk for the whole family, including the dog, from Folkestone to Hythe along the sea-front. This annual event is organised by the Rotary Club of Folkestone, which last year raised many thousands of pounds for Demelza House, the children's hospice. The aim is to make it as successful as the London Marathon! For the 1998 walk, half the funds raised will be given to Demelza and half will go either to the walker's choice or to the Rotary Community Fund for people in need. You may start the walk at any time between 9.00am and 11.00am from the Roundabout Café, the Rotunda, Folkestone and follow the signposted route to the Imperial Hotel, Hythe and back. Plenty of car parking is available at the start and all the participants will be awarded a commemorative certificate. Village shops are carrying posters and sponsor forms and more information is available from Peter Peacock on 862535.

CAMTAD
Campaign for Tackling Acquired Deafness
We are a local, non-profit making charity working alongside the statutory authorities helping those with hearing difficulties. We do this by setting up and running clinics for hearing aid users, giving talks and teaching sessions on hearing awareness, and generally pointing people with hearing difficulties in the right direction for help.
We have a clinic in Lyminge at Everist Court, Station Road, Lyminge (Tel: 862364) on the first Monday and the last Friday of the month from 10.00am to 11.30pm, no appointment necessary. We can help you with maintenance and minor repairs to hearing aids, offering advice and providing NHS batteries.
We are based at the Victoria Hospital, Deal Our office is being refurbished at the moment so our temporary numbers are 01304 828584 or 01304 865400. The usual number is 01304 360246. Ask for Lorraine Sencicle.

Re. Household Refuse
To the person or persons who repeatedly dump their rubbish in and around the litter bins on Tayne Field, this rubbish is NOT cleared by the council, but a volun-teer who has to carry it to a point of collection. You pay to have your rubbish cleared by the Council from your place of residence, so why not use it? Thank you.

Lyminge Library
Once again, thank you for all the donated books. Many have been very up-to-date publications and together with the adult fiction and non-fiction books being purchased by the Library Service, the shelves are taking on a 'new' look.
The exhibition for July is very different from anything shown before, being graphite drawings on paper which form part of a much larger, long term project by the artist, Helen Burr. The project is to present the drawings as an artist's book. The artist uses her art much as an author uses words to create a narrative, but this 'story' grows with each image as it is made. There are toy-like elements in all of them, yet they are colourless and sombre. Helen sees them mostly as theatrical pieces, small characters on a dark stage.
Although these drawings are quite probably not at all like other exhibitions, they should give the viewer an insight into one of the many different ways an artist can approach his or her chosen subject.

Reports

Etchinghill W.I.
Etchinghill W.I. won the Top Ten Quiz on 21st May at Barham. The team was Miss Towse, Mrs. Eagle-Bott, Mrs. Bartley and Mrs. Ingles. There was plenty of laugher in the village hall when Mr. Mike Chisnall Spoke on "School Inspection Can Be Fun" on Tuesday 16th June.

Lyminge W.I.
On the 9th June our Speaker was Mrs. Beaney, who gave us a very interesting talk on reading poems and short stories. The competition was an eight-line poem on gardens. The winner was Mrs. Davenport.

Rhodes Minnis Circle
We all enjoyed Sue Wood giving a talk on doll making at our June meeting. The competition winner was Dianne Bennett. We have now started our new programme and have some very varied and interesting meetings for the next year. New members will be very welcome. If you require transport, please ring any of the Committee members, a list of whom is in the Library.

Sibton Park Cricket Club
It has been a few years since SPCC has reached the Final of the Godden Cup. Our young players, batting first, under Paul McLeary's captaincy, dominated the games against Selsted and Hawkinge. Destructive batting by Steve Hickmott, Paul Fox, Adrian Scott and Tim Kingston built large winning totals.

Three players who continue to do well in both League and friendly games are Martin Wren, John Murrell and Tim Kingston. Tim is showing the benefit of his six months spent playing cricket in Australia.

Young Colt to watch: Robbie Waite

Our Matchball Sponsors for June were J.G. Wren and Lyminge Pharmacy. We thank them for their support.

100 Club winners for June were; £25 S. Wren, £10 R. Bunn, £5 F. White. New 100 Club members welcome. Prizes drawn monthly for an outlay of £12 per year. Contact C. Clark (862320).

Report
The rain held off on Tuesday 16 June and 20 members of the Society strolled around Harry's Wood and through Judith's Garden. All were most impressed at what had been achieved over a period of 38 years by Judith and Harry Lansdell, converting an open field into a wonderfully mature garden, a haven for wildlife and so peaceful. Many thanks to Judith for allowing us to enjoy the wood and garden.

Sutton 'Prism' Sunshine Petunia Competition
Lyminge Gardeners' Society entered three plants in the East Kent Regional Competition, grown by; Mrs. Daniel, Mrs. Godsave and Mr. Godden. Mr. Godden's plant won the regional competition and went on to enter the National Finals at the 'BBC Gardeners' World Live' garden show in Birmingham. Although the entry did not make the final three, it was in the final twenty from an overall entry of 2,000+ plants.

The show at Birmingham was excellent and is recommended for your diary for next year. Possibly we could organise a trip if there is sufficient interest.

Elham Gardeners' Society
Join us for a trip to Riverside Nursery Store, Dartford, leaving Lyminge at 1.00pm on Wednesday 15 July. Cost £5.00 including Cheese and Wine. Bookings to Doug Furminger on 862006.

Garden Tips for July
July is usually the warmest month of the year, bringing with it fungus diseases and other pests. Be watchful of all plants, indoors and out. Feed Sweet Peas, Dahlias, Chrysanthemums. It is also time to disbud the latter two. Finish off cleaning and storing spring bulbs. Start taking cuttings now from most shrubs and layer Wisteria and Passion Flower. To keep all flowers blooming, 'dead-head' regularly. This stops the plant producing seed and encourages production of more blooms.
