Well, the weather
certainly caused a lot of anxiety, especially with the
thunderstorms on Friday. The gardens definitely needed watering,
but precious roses had to be unceremoniously wrapped in bin bags
to protect them! Still all the hard work paid off; the 19
gardens in Lyminge and the 5 in Etchinghill were glorious – and
all so very different. One of the joys of a garden safari is
that you get to see different views of familiar places and one
of the best views of the Church was to be seen from the top of
the Old Rectory Garden with the house in the foreground. It was
a sensational picture.
There was so much to do and see over the weekend, people
were spoiled for choice. The School’s Fete was very well
attended and they did a brisk trade in beefburgers and hot dogs.
Over the road, keen sewers, often trailing a well-trained
husband, had a feast for the eyes in the Methodist Hall, where a
large number of quilts were on display. People particularly
enjoyed seeing work in progress. The Methodist Church was open
for quiet reflection, but the path had already been trodden by
person-less shoes and boots – each with their own charming
flower arrangement!
But speaking of arrangements…..well, what a joy the Parish
Church was! The theme of Weddings and Wedding Anniversaries was
beautifully interpreted in fabulous floristry. What talent there
is amongst our community!
Last, but not least, the Scarecrows! The “Lyminge Lovely”
should have been parked on a bench with “Ruby” in Canterbury
Road – what stories they could have told each other! Special
thanks go to the Traders of Lyminge who made such outstanding
scarecrows, which helped advertise this wonderful weekend. Watch
out for notification of the Lyminge Association AGM because we
are going to have a slide show of the highlights – and 108
pictures were taken (we’ll edit!)

New Recycling Program
Shepway District Council is making a positive move for the
environment with a new recycling program. This will start as
from the week beginning 4th July - hopefully you will have
received a leaflet through your letterbox explaining the
details.
You should already have:
(1) a wheeled bin with a green top, which is for non-recyclable
landfill rubbish
(2) a wheeled bin with a brown top, which is to recycle garden
waste
(3) a box, which is to recycle glass bottles and jars, plastic
bottles, tins and cans
(4) a bag, which is to recycle paper and small card.
Every week the box for recycled bottles and the bag for
recycled paper will be collected.
In addition to this, each week one of the wheeled bins will
be collected. One week your green top landfill wheeled bin will
be collected and the next week the brown top garden recycle
wheeled bin will be collected. So really the big change is that
our landfill waste will only be collected every second week.
Of course for some people this could be a problem,
particularly if you have a large family. The council does have
strategies in place so give them a call on 01303 858660.
For those of us who don't have a landfill wheeled bin but
use black sacks instead alternative arrangements are being made
and you should have received a separate letter from the council.
This new system may take a week or two to get used to, but
once we all have I'm sure we will agree it is a good idea.
Landfill costs are rising, partly because of the levies now
applied, and it does seem silly to bury rubbish rather than take
the extra few moments to sort it into piles and give the bottles
and tin cans a quick rinse out. The council even say that: "By
taking action now we hope to protect council tax payer from
future increases in waste disposal costs" - let us not be too
cynical after some of the council tax rises imposed on us in
recent years, but let us applaud Shepway District Council for
this recycle initiative. It is a positive move for us and our
children's future. |
Pleasant Day Outings
By Katie Guy
Without doubt the older folk of Lyminge and
environs have reason to be grateful for the hard work and care
of so many people.
On May 21st Elham Valley Lions organized a day's outing
along the blossoming lanes and bluebell woods of lovely Kent,
heading for Whitstable's United Reform Church Hall, there to be
warmly greeted by the "Lions" of Herne Bay and Whitstable who
provided a wonderful tea-party spread with lots of fun and
entertainment. We returned alongside the harbour, through the
narrow streets and almost touching the pictures in houses on
either side. A very comfortable and enlightening way to enjoy
that unique part of Kent. Our driver relayed a few accompanying
tunes on the pipe line. Sad to say, our voices were not quite as
tuneful as they once were, the excuse for the off-note rendering
was that we were drowsy after a really lovely and busy day's
outing. Once again Age Concern staff tucked us in for a safe
journey and ensured that the day went happily for each one of
us.
On Tuesday June 7th we of Age Concern were welcomed by the
ladies of Elham Church to yet another feast in Elham Methodist
Hall, the proceeds to be offered to provide further amenities
for Age Concern. Matthew, Deputy Manager of Age Concern, has had
a great deal of practice recently in organizing transport for
outings and daily lunch provision. Indeed Lisa Hodden and all
her staff, including the people who staff the kitchen, have all
been stretched ad infinitum during the past weeks.
More work at Age Concern "home" continues behind the scenes
as we learn that the work is up to schedule and that we shall
soon be welcomed "home." This has been a period of real hard
work and improvisation for Lisa and the Age Concern staff and we
now look forward with pleasure and excitement to "business as
usual" in rather more elegant surroundings but in the assurance
that it will still be the same brand of care, and of helpfulness
offered to us with a smile. |

More Volunteers Needed for
The Lyminge Association Newsletter
The Lyminge Association still needs more volunteers for the
Newsletter. At the moment there are two coeditors who sort,
compile and deliver the copy to the printer, but we are still
desperately short of people to write pieces of interest on
anything as varied as what you do at one of the many local clubs
to interesting days out, as Mrs Guy describes on page 3.
The format of your contribution doesn't matter (handwritten
or typed); what the Lyminge Association seeks to do through the
Newsletter is offer a space for members of our community to
express their opinions about certain issues and inform others in
the community about events that may be of interest. In short,
the Newsletter needs to be a collection of different and diverse
points of view.
So, if you can spend just half an hour of your time writing
something, please do and pop the written version into the
library or newsagent or you can send it electronically to one of
the addresses on the front cover. If you would like to attend
the next Lyminge Association meeting, it will be held on 18th
July at 8pm - call Graham on 862907 for further details. |

Are there fairies in Lyminge?
The Rude Mechanical Theatre, will be back on
Tayne Field again this summer (Sun 7th August at 7.45pm) with
their new play, The Fairy Queen or Oberon's Cure'.
Its an earthy new comedy with 'a touch of tenderness'
telling the story of Oberon's and Titania's alleged affairs
(according to each other) referred to in passing in 'A Midsummer
Night's Dream' - that is, what really happened! Last year's
show, The Odyssey', was listed by The Times in their Top 200
Things to Do outdoors for families. Jill Parkin said: "There's
an almost circus-like feeling of anything could happen." So it
will be a good evening.
Take your own chairs, picnics, wine - and lanterns to create
a fairy ambience. Although the show is aimed at adults, children
will love it too with the white faced clown style, the live
music, the slapstick and highly audience interactive style. But
it's full of poetry and has layers of meaning and provocative
observations on love, seduction and getting older.
Tickets can be bought at Gill's Hardware or the Central Box
Office: 01323-501260. Tickets are priced at £9 for adults, £8
for senior citizens and £5 for anyone in full time education - a
good price for actors who work regularly in the West End and
major theatres around the country. There's a Family ticket too
for £23 (that is, any two adults & school aged children) and a
large group rate (£1 off per ticket for groups of 10 or more).
Don't miss it! Get tickets early - and it's cheaper to see the
show here than if you go to Canterbury to see it (staged there
in The Marlowe).

RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION
WORLD WAR 2 – THE PEOPLE’S WAR
What did your family do during World War 2? Were
you alive at the time and do you still have many vivid memories?
Would you like to tell some of these to the BBC WW2 Story
gathering Project? Your children and great grandchildren and
many others will be able to read them for many years and even
centuries to come.
The BBC is undertaking a huge task by collecting and
archiving memories from all aspects of life during the 2nd World
War and using them to build a picture of what life was like at
this time. Future generations can then access the archive for
information, research and education. They have to complete this
task by November 2005.
Come along to the 60th Celebrations of VE/VJ Day at
Etchinghill Village Hall on Sunday July 10th from 2.30 onwards
and talk to the story gatherers or write your story down on the
forms provided. The stories don’t have to be long just relevant
to the period. Join in the celebrations that are also taking
place. Tickets only £2.00 for over 60’s.
If you can’t make this date do contact Barbara
Collins-Newing on 01303 862873 to make an appointment. Or send
an e-mail to

AGE CONCERN ELHAM RURAL
On the 20th June we restarted services from our
refurbished day centre. We are very pleased with how the project
has been carried out. Now that we have more room we can deliver
new services such as a laundry service for frail older people
and a pop-in area for any older person to come in and have a
coffee, this area will soon have an internet accessible computer
for our people to use.
Other new services are planned for the very near future
including an Advice and Information Service which has been
funded for 3 years by the National Lottery.
We continue with our Chiropody clinic, hearing aid
maintenance and battery replacement service, assisted bathing,
hot lunches, transport to and from the centre, activities all in
the company of other older people. You don’t have to be a member
to join; any older person is welcome to pop in, see what we do,
access as many services as they need. The staff are friendly and
are keen to show the community what a wonderful resource is now
available.
Our AGM is being held on Wednesday 21st July 2005 at 3pm at
our Everist Court Day centre, all are welcome. There will be an
opportunity for everyone to look around the centre. For any

Lyminge Pre-School Playgroup Reg. Charity No 1029226
In February this year the OFSTED inspector was so impressed
by the Lyminge pre-school setting that she awarded us with the
highest grade possible! This is only achieved by 15% of all
pre-schools and nurseries in the country! She felt “The
education provision at Lyminge pre-school is of high quality and
staff work positively and enthusiastically with all children,
encouraging them to be confident, independent and self assured”.
We were very pleased with the result and as leader of the
Lyminge pre-school I would like to thank all the staff, parents
and of course the children for being brilliantly supportive.
This term has been a busy one as we have been learning about
colours and shapes as well as different cultures and festivals.
This topic is supported by visitors to the pre-school and walks
around the village. We have also been encouraging spontaneous
creative activities in addition to our curriculum as further
support to the children’s learning.
Our pre-school is a day care setting open 9am to 1pm on
Mondays and9am to 3pm for the rest of the week in term time. We
take children from the age of 2 years old – toilet trained or
not and we offer specialist sessions for the older children in
readiness for school. We meet exacting standards set by OFSTED,
are members of the pre-school alliance and have a good liaison
with Lyminge Primary School.
If you are interested in sending your child to us then please
ring me Julie Murphy (863834) or Lynn (862831) or simply pop in
for a visit. |

much notice as possible. All we need is a large table and a
minimum donation of £35, which goes to The Pilgrims Hospice.
