Association News
There will be a Clubs and
Societies Evening on Friday 14 September 2001 at Lyminge School. If your
club or society has not registered your wish to attend already – get on to
Mike Foxon on 862073. It will be an ideal opportunity for local
organisations to promote themselves and also a good opportunity to recruit
additional members or volunteer helpers. For those who are new to the
village, or those who are thinking of a new hobby, it will be your chance to
see what is on offer, without commitment. Lyminge School Parents and Friends
will provide refreshments during the evening. At the end of the evening the
Lyminge Association will hold a short Annual General Meeting, to which
everyone will be most welcome.
Lyminge Parish Council
Thank you for the feedback and
comments following last month’s column. The agenda for forthcoming Parish
Council meetings is displayed on the notice-boards at Etchinghill and Rhodes
Minnis; space doesn’t allow for the minutes to be shown as well. The next
Parish Council meeting will be on 30th July, at 7.30 pm, at Lyminge Village
Hall.
Road repairs
Kent County Council wrote to the Parish Council in April about emergency
road repairs, explaining that in many cases temporary repairs are carried
out in order to maintain safety:
“Unprecedented rain and floods are having a hugely detrimental effect
on roads. We inspect roads regularly but pot-holes can develop very quickly
and become dangerous in a matter of days… Maintenance budgets have been
increased by 23% this year… Between inspections we rely upon the general
public to inform the Highways Unit of local pot-holes.”
You can contact the Shepway Highway Unit on 850388.
Street lights
Street lights are not the responsibility of the Parish Council, however if
you notice a light not working, you can report it to Shepway District
Council on 852283.
Electoral review
The Local Government Commission have been reviewing electoral boundaries in
our area. They have decided that Lyminge and Etchinghill should be split
between different wards (wards are the basis upon which representation is
organised for Shepway District Council). This proposal was opposed by the
Parish Council. The Commission have also decided that the Parish Council
should have one less councillor -13 instead of 14 – with 10 councillors
representing Lyminge and Rhodes Minnis, and 3 representing Etchinghill.

Handbells Summer Events
The Lyminge Handbells group
continue to be seen at various summer events in the area. We were pleased to
be associated at the Home Farm Trust day at Lympne on the 3rd of June and on
the 30th of June at the special Summer Church Yard event in the village. If
you would like to hear the sound of our super, newly refurbished bells at a
special celebration or family event, just give us a ‘ring’. We have
already received two bookings for Christmas so it is never too soon to book.
Please let us know some weeks in advance if you can and we will do our best
to come along. Evenings and weekends only please. We have recruited some new
members but would-be ringers are always welcome. More ringers make it easier
for us to attend all the events we are asked to play at. If you would like
to book the bellringers, or want to have a go yourself just call either Ro
Edmond on 863201 or Stuart Hunnisett on 862530 for details.

Government
Strategy of Fuel Poverty
You may be aware that the
government has developed a strategy for tackling fuel poverty. The majority
of the fuel poor live in their own homes, which means that referrals to
sources of assistance have to be secured on an individual self-referral
basis. To facilitate this process, DTI have produced two types of leaflets:
“Beating fuel poverty – a community approach”
“Cold in winter? You may be eligible for a Government grant to make
your home warm”.
Stocks of these leaflets are kept at the Day Centre, Age Concern, and are
available to everyone who thinks this might apply to them. Please call in
and ask for one or ring the freefone number on 0800 952 0600.
Neighbourhood
Watch
This is a warning that at this
time of the year burglaries to sheds are prevalent. Extra security for your
shed is very worthwhile. Shed alarms are available cheaply from DIY stores
and through the Watch Office. Items stolen from sheds are often then used to
break into the properties nearby. Please consider the security of your
property.

Gardening
Tips for July
If the dry, sunny weather
continues, watering will be a priority. An evening soaking is best and
vegetables, hanging baskets and containers need particular attention. Liquid
feed containers regularly unless a slow release fertilizer has been used.
Don’t forget to top up bird baths and ponds.
Buy seeds or seedlings of
polyanthus, winter flowering viola and pansies and plant autumn crocus, Trim
back new shoots on pyracantha, after flowering, to enjoy a good show of
berries later in the year. Stake sun flowers and autumn flowering perennials
and take a little time to enjoy the good weather while it lasts.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own
factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of being only one of
five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line
Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a
severe weather rating. So, if you have old box sash style windows and
believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again! Maintenance free,
sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and
decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the
market. Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and
Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
