A HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS!
Sorry the Newsletter is late this month - the Editor's been on holiday!

Another award for Lyminge!

Not only are we the Best Village in Kent and the best Kent village for care and support of young people in the village, but we are the National Winner for care and support of older people! The Village has received another plaque (which will be displayed with the others in the Library) and a cheque for £500 to be spent on a community project. The award was presented at a ceremony held at the Royal Institute of Civil Engineers on Monday 7 December, which both Liz Coleman and Linda Willcox attended. The following day the achievement was highlighted on Meridian Television and subsequently in the local papers. The national winner of the Village of the Year competition was Llandbadarn Fynydd from Powys.

Reports

Christmas Card Competition

HAXTONS Estate Agents has run a Christmas Card competition for the second year running at the Lyminge Primary School. Once again, the standard of the entries was very high and judging them was very difficult because the children showed a great deal of imagination and artistic talent. Whilst everyone who entered received a small Christmas gift, there unfortunately had to be winners. The winners and runners up were as follows:
Classes R, 1 and 2: Winner: Matthew Smith, Runner up: Anna Ottaway.
Classes 3 and 4: Winner: Rachel Long, Runner up: Jessica Laker.
Classes 5 and 6: Winner: Jonathan Laker, Runner up: Amelia Ferguson.
Congratulations to everyone who entered.

Lyminge School

Very many thanks to all the Parents and the many friends we have in the Parish who collected all those Tesco tokens. An excellent computer is now used by classes 4 and 5.

Before Christmas class 6 attended the Cathedral day. Many people remarked on the excellence of the school banner which has been constructed recently. It is hoped to display this in Lyminge Library for a short while.

Etchinghill W.I.

At our last meeting our new President, Mrs. Dottie Cross presented Mrs. Bartley, our past President, with a bouquet and thanked her for all she'd done for us. A Christmas party followed with quizzes organised by Mrs. A. Morgan and Mrs. Syrett. The best party hat was won by Mrs. Le Cras.

Lyminge W.I.

Our meeting on the 8th December was our Christmas party and the Committee had laid on a very nice tea for us. We had two quizzes after tea and before going home we sang carols and received a present. On the 17th November we wend to the Marlowe Theatre to see "Me and My Girl", a show that everyone enjoyed.

The Senior Citizens' Club

The Senior Citizens' Club and friends enjoyed a very nice afternoon to Bybrook Garden Centre to see Father Christmas and all the decorations. Our Speaker for the month gave us an interesting afternoon telling us of his deep-sea diving escapades on wrecks in the Channel. He brought with him many trophies; a ship's bell, lanterns, shells and his diving suit. In all, a very enjoyable afternoon.

Letters to the Editor

The authors of the following letters have both asked that their names and addresses be withheld:

Age Concern

"Most people say that vicious, unsigned letters should be treated with the contempt they deserve, however, the one received by Sheila Woods and Beverley at the Day Centre, needs to be answered. I have had twice-weekly lunches at the Centre for the past 21 years and have always enjoyed them. The food is excellent and special diets catered for. I can't be an easy job dealing with so many elderly people, many of whom need a lot of help. Sheila, Beverley and all the staff are always kind and considerate and on hand to deal with any problems. I have no complaints about how the Centre is run and I speak for all those who are glad that it is always here for us."

"Dear Editor,
"As one of the people of Lyminge who enjoys and appreciates some of the wonderful services provided at Age Concern by Sheila, Beverley and their helpers, I am delighted to say "thank you". This is more than can be said of the cowardly "people of Lyminge" who sent a very unpleasant anonymous letter to Sheila. People who haven't the courage to sign their names to their complaints are not fit to live in "The Best Village in Kent"."
