Community Matters

The Lyminge Association’s Charities’ Trade Fair
Saturday 5 March, 9.00am – 12.00pm at Lyminge Village Hall

Every year the Lyminge Association hosts the Charities’ Trade Fair, but you may know it by another name – the Charities’ Coffee Morning! The new name is to help us move with the times. If you have never been to this function, or you are new to the area, it is a not-to-be-missed part of the social calendar of Lyminge – in fact it starts the “season”!
What happens is this…. local and national charities hire one or two tables. They are invited to sell what they like in order to raise funds for their organisation – so the goods on offer may range from bric-a-brac and cakes, to their own charities goods (pens, pencils, notepads and so on). The Lyminge Association sets up the tables and organises the refreshments. It is a good place to meet up with friends for a coffee and natter while, at the same time, supporting your favourite charities.
If you know of a registered charity which would be interested in taking a table or two (two is the maximum, because it is such a popular event; the cost is £3.50 per table), please suggest they ring Mary Bennett on 863057.

Changes to the Newsletter
and Your Part

Over the next few months it would be nice to introduce some very local features to this Newsletter, not information that we can learn from the Folkestone Herald, Adscene or Extra. In other words, villagey stuff. You may have already noticed the Poem of the Month contribution from our local Lyminge CE Primary School. In this edition I have included a Monthly Review of our local Dramatic Society’s most recent production; however, the space set aside for reviews can be a review of anything from a concert to a social event, from a community based activity to a (local) restaurant meal. Also, I have included a piece on a local sporting club by Janet Reynolds.
The purpose of profiling events and organisations in our area is to increase awareness of activities within our villages so that we can have a social life in the Elham Valley as well as Folkestone and Canterbury. Needless to say I can’t do this on my own, because I don’t know all of what goes on, and so I need your help.
Please write a little review (less than 200 words is enough) about something you see – I can proof-read and provide suggestions and comments if it’s the first time you have written such a thing and you want a second opinion. Alternatively, write a little piece about your sports activity; share with us why you do it and whether we could join in – especially for those of us not quite as fit as our furtive imaginations remember us being.
Obviously no one expects you to write something every month, just once a year would be enough. In fact, if everyone just wrote once a month, the Newsletter would be so inundated that we wouldn’t be able to include everything. But I’m a realist, so please, just some of you, write something just once this year.
Finally, keep your letters coming in. Letters in many ways are the most important section of this Newsletter because they can be very short and reflect pressing opinions. The letters are everyone’s space to complain about the inconsideration shown by others or alert the community about something important.

The Badminton Club
by Janet Reynolds

Our local badminton club meets on Thursday evenings from 7.30 to 9.30 p.m. in the Methodist Village Hall, Lyminge. The club was originated by a group of people from Ottinge and then in 1994 was taken over by the Eurotunnel construction workers. During their 'reign' they invited some local people to join and, on their departure to create other 'wonders of the world', they kindly donated all the equipment to the village.
This is a friendly club, which is evident by the occasional return of one the Eurotunnel construction workers, from wherever in the world he may be, most recently Singapore. The group enjoy a good game, but also take the opportunity to catch up on local gossip over a cooling drink between games. Sometimes we consider that our games can be more challenging than the recent Olympic matches, since we have to contend with a stage at the very end of the court, a low ceiling and avoid being caught out playing 'real' tennis by bouncing the shuttlecock off the wall to get it in the opponents side of the court.
Should you be interested in joining us then you can contact me on 01303 862900.

Last Call to Sponsor the Newsletter

In the last couple of editions we have made a call to charities and community based organisations to sponsor this magazine, and now we are making the same call to business organisations. Sponsorship (currently) costs £30, and for this the sponsor receives a prime location for an advert on the cover page so your ad will be noticed. If you would like to sponsor or discuss terms and conditions, please call Graham on 862907.

Stephen Bennett

It is with deep regret that the Lyminge Association announces the death of Stephen Bennett, who until the AGM in September was still the Treasurer to the Association. It is a testament to Stephen that, despite his illness, he provided us with support and advice to the end. Our new Treasurer knows that she has a very hard act to follow; his book-keeping was immaculate and his advice was always pragmatic. The Association’s Committee was dismayed at the rapid progression of his illness and our heartfelt sympathies are extended to his wife, Christine, and all his family. Should you wish to make a donation to the Motor Neurone Disease Association in Stephen’s memory, it can be sent via W.J. Farrier and Sons, Bouverie Road West, Folkestone.

Monthly Review

The Ghost Train

The Lyminge Dramatic Society finished 2004 with a production of Arnold Ridley’s comedy thriller The Ghost Train. Perhaps it was their best play of the year, with strong performances from all of the cast and sound direction from Stuart Hunnisett.
On opening night a packed house was on the edge of their seats from the moment the plot of the play was set up in the first act: a group of oddly matched travellers stuck overnight at the haunted railway station of Fal Vale, near Truro. The Station Master tells the tale of local legend has it that the station is haunted: 20 years prior a Station Master mysteriously died on the platform before six other passengers died on a runaway train. Then, lo and behold, this Station Master dies suddenly and suspense is created and heightened as the elements of his story happen one by one. Even we, the audience, were unnerved at several times as noises, screams and ghostly lanterns were shone unexpectedly through the railway waiting room window.
Eventually the suspense reaches a fitting conclusion, and we discover one of the passengers is a detective investigating an arms-smuggling gang using the cover of the fabled local ghost story. The Station Master and accomplices are not quite as dead as we imagined, and are dealt with appropriately. Everyone seemed to agree we had been treated to an enthralling evening of theatre, and I’m sure The Lyminge Dramatic Society’s next production will be eagerly awaited.

Villagers Show their True Colours

Villagers have shown their loyalty by supporting the Lyminge Food & Wine shop after it was robbed on Friday 17th December. At around 1pm two teenagers threatened Mrs Kumanan with hammers while her husband was upstairs having his lunch. By the time Mr Kumanan rushed downstairs the youths aged between 16-19 years old had left the shop with the morning’s takings. The police later received a useful description of the robbers and a description of the suspected getaway vehicle parked at the other end of the village was taken by one vigilant person. Mr Kumanan said, “That Friday night I felt like closing the shop. You work hard just for someone to come in and take it away.” He said he used to work in London Monday to Friday without all the hassle nor all the hours, “Five o’clock Friday and you forget it all.” When they reopened on Saturday morning he had a pleasant surprise: “People came in bringing flowers and

chocolates and were very concerned for us. It changed the way we felt. You wouldn’t get that in London. We soon changed our minds about wanting to close.” He also mentioned people spending more in the shop than they normally would since the robbery; he suspected they were helping him to make up the money they had lost. Mrs Kumanan said she felt angry after they had been held up, but was also touched by how villagers have responded. Sometimes it takes an incident like this to appreciate the place in which we live. Certainly the Kumanans deserve this level of support because they do work hard and long hours. They have said they have made a few changes to the way they manage their shop, not least by ensuring that little money is left in the till and that it is either banked or taken to the night-safe every day. Both Mr & Mrs Kumanan said they would like to thank all the villagers for all their support, especially Mr & Mrs Kirk.

Roadside Nature Reserve
by David Wiseman

Those of you who use the road from New Barn Corner to Stone Street may have noticed that small notices have appeared on posts about half way up and again at its junction with Farthing Common. The notices will tell you that this section of roadside verge has been adopted as a roadside nature reserve and is managed by Kent Wildlife Trust.
Why? Because this section of road verge is recognised as part of Kent’s heritage of important roadside habitat, in this case ancient woodland verge and contains many species of flora that have been gradually eradicated by modern practise. The verge looks uninteresting for part of the year due to the heavy tree cover but from late Autumn into Spring comes into its own when scarce plants such as green hellebore appear and flower. In spring, this verge is a riot of colour with bluebells, yellow archangel, and wood anemone adorning the banks.
This roadside reserve is one of 132 throughout Kent that stretch for 55 road miles. They each have there own management plan including when to cut, which recognises the important flora and fauna present, including rare wild orchids, and, their attraction for many insects including butterflies. Each verge has a volunteer warden to carry out management tasks and check on the reserves well being.
There are a number of larger Kent Wildlife Trust managed sites close by, for example Park Gate Down, Elham; Spong Wood, Elmsted; and Yokletts Bank off Stone Street.
If you would like more information regarding the Trust’s work visit their web site on www.kentwildlife.org.uk or even give consideration to spending an enjoyable day on one these sites carrying out management work.

Poem of the Month

Outside the School

The fresh mourning breeze dances to and fro,
A tree waving one to another,
A butterfly swiftly hoping across the green grass,
The sun pushing down heat waves,
The clouds swirling round in the sky, T
he playground snoozing under the sun

David (Yr 6)

Your Letters

Dear Editor: When we moved to Brady Road some years ago to raise a family, it seemed at the time ideal. All too soon our children were running the gauntlet dawn and dusk for the school bus, wearing reflective armbands and diving into the hedgerow to escape yet another near miss on the ‘rat-run’ Brady Road had become.
Our youngest was knocked off his bike by a motorcyclist who failed to stop. Fortunately he only suffered concussion. Not so lucky our much loved and missed feline family members; leaving broken hearts and traumatised children: Metoo 7 mths; Frodo 2½ yrs; Enna 2 yrs; Bilbo 3 yrs; Henry 6 mths.
We bless everyday Pippin and Freyer are still with us, a locked catflap from 5pm to 9am may be responsible for their longevity.
Since the establishment of the Sibton Park complex, pedestrian and canine traffic has increased substantially. Surely a more vigorous traffic calming measure could be emplaced. It is only a matter of time before we have a human tragedy on Brady.

Tessa Box.

AGE CONCERN ELHAM RURAL

Plans for our extension project continue apace – we will be moving out of our Everist Court building on Friday, January 28th, 2005 and building work is due to start on Monday, January 31st. Our office will be based in a flat at Nailbourne Court and we can be contacted on the same telephone number, 01303 862364, Monday to Friday. Hearing aid batteries and hairdressing will be provided from the flat.
We have organised day-care for our clients at Etchinghill Village Hall on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and meals on wheels will be delivered to our Lyminge clients on the other two days. Chiropody clinics will also be provided at Etchinghill Village Hall.
We have managed to secure funding for an electric blanket replacement scheme for local people aged 60 and over and we will be working in partnership with our Community Warden, Ian Norman, to provide this service. Unfortunately, the money has only just been made available, and so we were unable to provide this before Christmas. We will be running sessions from Wednesday, January 12th at the Jubilee Day Centre. Anyone who is interested in having an old blanket replaced should contact us on 01303 862364 for an appointment. When attending, you will need to bring your old blanket which we will dispose of and give you a new one free of charge. If you are housebound and unable to get to the Centre, please let us know and we can arrange for Ian Norman to visit you at home. Next year blankets will be tested at the Centre by a competent tester and, in case of failure, a replacement will be offered.

Notices and Reports

ETCHINGHILL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

In the past anyone wishing to display a notice in Etchinghill have had to nail them to fences and trees – now they have a notice board on which to display them. The board, made of oak, was handmade and installed by local carpenter, Paul Waddup. Anyone, living locally, wishing to display notices, should contact a member of the Committee on 01303 862873/863495.

The Residents Committee also displayed one of two banners that they have donated to the Village Hall to advertise local events being held there.

Money was raised for these through donations, grants and fund raising events held throughout the year.

ETCHINGHILL W.I.

Our Christmas party on 14th December was a huge success. We were entertained by Ron Kenny (always popular). Two retiring Committee members, Marie Spring and Dorothy Bain were presented with bouquets by Barbara Syrett. Some lovely Christmas crackers were submitted for the competition, which was won by Barbara. The afternoon concluded with a sumptuous tea provided by the committee. What a perfect end to a most successful year.
We send New Year good wishes to everyone.
Our next meeting is on 18th January when Mr B Doone will speak on ‘Windmills of Kent’. The competition will be a photo of a windmill. Do come and join us.
