"I and a number of other
villagers were rather alarmed to find
that in the later part of August a Roman
Road like path had been laid across the
golf course. This work had been carried
out after very brief consultation with
the Parish Council and as far as I am
aware no further consultations with any
other interested parties. The intention
to carry out this work would have only
been known to local residents if they
had read the previous Parish Council
minutes posted on the Lyminge notice
board. Neither the local Etchinghill
Residents' Association nor the Area
representative of The Ramblers
Association were consulted. We were
faced with a fait accompli. As a keen
walker throughout Kent and a regular
user of the path 1 would judge this path
to be one of the easiest, flattest and
most accessible paths within the county
notwithstanding that users of all types
tend, with the tacit agreement of the
golf course to gain access to the path
by way of the vehicle entrance to the
golf course. Despite Mr Hutchinson's
assertion the lawful public access to
the path is by a style at the
Etchinghill end and a gap in the hedge
at the Broadstreet end, therefore it is
not yet legally accessible to mums with
prams or the disabled. One must ask the
question that with such a good and
easily accessible public path was it
necessary to spoil the ambience of what
was a delightful meadowland walk by
laying a concrete Roman Road across this
beautiful walk? Mr Hutchinson seems to
have missed the point, the whole point
of taking exercise and enjoying the
countryside is to get away from the
concrete jungle and to enjoy the lush
grass and soft earth underfoot. One must
also ask the question that with so many
styles in need of repair within the
County and Parish, making it difficult
for the able and disabled to gain access
to the countryside, could this money
have not been better spent on such
projects? A further question, just how
much did this unnecessary concreting
cost?"
Les Preston, Etchinghill
"What a fantastic day!
The wonderful success of St Nicholas
Fair 2003 could not have happened
without the hard work, enthusiasm and
support of many, many people. In
addition to all the stallholders, the
players, actors and musicians and all
those who helped at the Fair - numbering
over 100 and so difficult to list in
this newsletter - our special thanks go
to the following people whose dedication
and enthusiasm over the last year made
this Fair possible: Julie Butcher, Kath
Butcher, Roger Davenport, Anne Gibbons,
Liz Gibbons. Sonia
Harris, Vicky Hollingsbee, Andy House,
Marjorie Joyce, Georgina Osbome, Kate
and Derek Smith, Anthea Wilson and above
all to Lyn Callander and Alice Davis. St
Nicholas Fair December 4th 2004 promises
to be just as good or even better!"
Helen and Catherine
"We have just returned
home after an excellent holiday at
Sibton Park and thought we should write
to tell you how much we enjoyed our time
in Lyminge and the surrounding area.
Your newsletter pointed us to three very
enjoyable events for us to attend. We
went to the school Christmas Craft Fair
which was excellent - we even won a
prize. Then on Sunday we went to the
Methodist Church, where we had been also
on our previous two holidays, and were
welcomed to a very good service.
Finally, on Wednesday night we went to
Aladdin, which was fantastic. Our guests
from Holland had never seen panto and
were enraptured. Widow Twanky singing
"It's Raining Men" and her final
Allsorts ensemble were memorable. It is
so good to see a complete village
community working together and enjoying
themselves so much. Many of our nearby
villages have just become dormitories
with no shops and not even a pub. Keep
up the good work, we will look forward
to our next holiday at Sibton Park."
Jeanette and Martin Shipley,
Leeds, West Yorkshire
Corrections:
Unfortunately there was an
error in the December newsletter. It was
reported that the British Legion Poppy
Appeal in Lyminge raised £160.85. Infact,
the correct figure was £1160.85, and the
amount raised throughout the whole
valley was £3043.67. Apologies for any
confusion caused.
I can also now confirm that the new
phone number for lan Norman, the
Community Warden is 07811271303 rather
than the number previously published.
Ed.
Have your say in the Parish
Plan for Rhodes Minnis, Lyminge, and
Etchinghill
What will life in Lyminge be like in
ten years time? There's certainly plenty
happening in Kent that will have an
impact on us, whether it's the expansion
of Ashford, or the possibility of a
high-speed rail link between Folkestone
and London. These and other developments
will effect us in ways we can't predict,
and over which we may not have a great
deal of influence. So what can we
influence? What do you want the Parish
Council to focus its attention on? Are
you bothered more about public transport
or community facilities? About green
issues or the needs of local businesses?
What about traffic, and litter, and
crime? A Parish Plan will be developed
over the next few months, a statement of
what we think are the priorities for our
community, with some ideas for how to
meet them. To start with we'd like to
get an idea of the kind of hopes
residents of the parish have for the
future of our community.
So what are your three wishes for the
parish, and what do you like best about
living here? Add your three wishes
online at
www.lyminge.org.uk/parishplan
A
hundred years ago, people in this area
were thrilled
to be given an opportunity to have
electricity installed
in their homes.
An equally important chance awaits
you here and now in 2004.
Your community needs
you......................
Would you like the
opportunity to have broadband?
BT have confirmed we need 400 people
to register their interest in
getting broadband in our area and they
will then install it.
BUT we need another 160 registrations
to hit our target.
What is broadband?
Broadband provides FAST
access to the internet via your 'phone
line without tying up your telephone
connection. It will enable you
to surf the internet quicker because the
pages will download
quicker and if you need to download
files then you will be only
waiting minutes... not hours.
PLEASE REGISTER
You need only register for the option
to get broadband. You are
NOT committing yourself to anything and
there is no cost involved.
To register please go to
www.broadband4thedowns.co.uk and
click on "Register".
Please do it now.................

The A.G.M. in November
was well attended. The
new
committee was formed and
Barbara Syrett was
unanimously voted to be
our President for
another year. The
Christmas lunch held at
Stelling Minnis was
enjoyed by 29 members.
The December meeting was
a very festive time. We
were entertained by Mrs
Banks and and ladies -
(Wings of Song), a
wonderful group of five
very talented singers.
This was followed by a
sumptuous tea. All
members were then given
a sample bottle of well
known perfumes.
Altogether a lovely
Christmas meeting.
The next meeting is on
20th January at The New
Village Hall and starts
at 2.30pm. Visitors and
new members are most
welcome. The speaker
will be Mrs A Woolf and
her subject is
'Remembering Joyce
Grenfell' The
competition is for a
monologue of 12 lines or
less.

Update on
repairs to the Parish
Church
Some of you may
have seen the new
'thermometer' which is
keeping you updated on
the fund raising towards
the Church repairs.
I am pleased to say that
the total raised so far
is £11.000.
This is excellent news
and has enabled us to
plan for the first Phase
of repairs which will
start (weather
permitting) in the week
of 9 February.
The money has
been raised from the
Gift Day we held in
August which, with help
from the tax man, raised
just over £6,000. This
is YOUR contribution and
we are very grateful We
have also had £5.000 in
grants, and have more
grant applications in
the pipeline.
As you know, the
St Nicholas' Fair is
also raising money for
the Church - the total
will be shared with you
next month, but we are
confident that our total
of £26,000 is getting
much nearer.

Gardening Tips
Work off the Christmas feasting
by continuing to tidy and
dig in the garden when the
weather allows. Also, start
thinking ahead. The problem of
slugs and snails is best
tackled early, so whatever
method you prefer, start
instigating it from January
rather than leaving action until
the weather warms up and the
slug and snail population
has become well established.

BUSINESS ADVERTISING
NOTICE

either live in or
trade from the
distribution area of
the newsletter i.e.
be able to provide a
