THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER

January 2002

Produced by
The Lyminge Association

A HAPPY, HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS
NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS !

Firstly – a couple of apologies…..

Last month the sheet for businesses who “block-book” advertising was missed off the News-letter.  We are dreadfully sorry about that and have promised one free extra advertisement to all those who were affected.  We do hope you have not lost business through this.

….and an apology for the lateness in this month’s issue of the Newsletter.  Christmas combined with a New Year’s holiday to France for the Editor got in the way!

It was very interesting to be in Europe on the day that they all converted to “Euros”.  Whatever your thoughts about the new currency, we were very impressed with the smooth way that it was handled; there was no confusion or irritation that we noticed and the shop-keepers seemed well trained and very patient.  All the prices on the shelves were well-marked (with the value in French Francs given in small type).  The only confusion for us will be working out the value of items when it has been so easy with the Pound being about 10 Francs for such a long time.  The coins are all fairly distinctive and the different grooves on the edges make them easy to identify by feel and the notes are different sizes.  Don’t forget that if you have any foreign currency you should get along to the Post Office as soon as possible to convert the notes back into Pounds (you can use the FF in France until 18 February).  Currency conversion at the Post Office is commission free.  Any loose change can be taken to Lyminge School (or donated to your favourite charity) where it will be gathered together and converted into much needed funds.

On a sad note, the Lyminge Association was dismayed to learn of the death of Ray Reynolds just before Christmas.  He was a Newsletter Distributor for Silverlands Road (when he was not on one of his many jaunts on holiday!).  He will be much missed by the Lyminge Association and by Age Concern, where he had been a willing volunteer for several years.  Bert Lewis kindly volunteered to distribute this issue to all those on Ray’s round (the odd numbers down the street).  If you would like to volunteer to replace Ray, please contact Debbie Marsh on 863192.

By the way, if any of our Distributors have any queries or problems, please contact Debbie, rather than Liz, as Debbie is the one who counts out all the Newsletters into the piles for distribution these days!  Please let Debbie know if you will be on holiday – (but please try an organise a temporary replacement).  As ever, our heart-felt thanks to this willing band of people who make sure that your Newsletter is distributed to your door, free of charge, every month.

Thank you to Father Christmas and all his gnomes and helpers for taking the time to visit Lyminge on 22 December.  Listening to what happens on the night, I think FC and his helpers get as much (if not more!) pleasure from making the deliveries as do the recipients.  We would like to encourage even more people to use the service and will be advertising the service in the November and December issues of this year’s Newsletter (goodness, doesn’t time fly!).

A copy of each Newsletter is archived every month, and recent copies are held by the Editor, but those for January 1995 – December 1998 have just been archived in the Library.  They join copies going back to 1989 (at least).  Apart from any historical interest, don’t forget that they may be useful reference material for any student undertaking a local study.

Also at the Library – don’t forget that there is a Year Planner for local clubs and societies to mark their events upon.  This will help avoid clashes of dates.  Club Secretaries should also note that a list of local clubs, societies and associations is also held in the Library.  This is especially useful for newcomers to the village, so please make sure that all your details are up-to-date so that people interested in joining you can make contact easily.

Saturday 19 January
Ethelburga Quilters
Fancy a new hobby for the New Year?  Beginners are especially welcome to join us to discover a practical art with textiles.  All you need is a sewing machine that works and a standard sewing kit.  Although a number of members have been working on a variety of projects over the past year, absolute beginners need hold no fears!  (There is plenty to “stretch” the experienced quilt artist too!).  If any youngster (10 years plus) would like to join us, they too would be very welcome.  The monthly workshops are held at Lyminge School from 10.00am to 4.00pm .  Further information from Liz Coleman on 863197.

Susan and Janet wish you all a very Happy New Year.  They look forward to February 2002, when (in the 15th year of the library being sited in the present building) two computers will be fitted, giving free public assess to word processing, email facilities and the Internet.  Money from the National Lottery’s New Opportunities Fund is being used to link all UK public libraries to the Internet.  For more information, please pick up a leaflet.

Our Spring Production will be the fast-moving comedy, “Party Piece”, written by Richard Harris of ‘Outside Edge’ fame.  Set in Victorian suburbia, it is Michael and Roma’s house-warming party.  The evening looks set to be a lively one until a string of hilarious disasters threatens to ruin the occasion.  The play will ruin from Wednesday the 20th to Saturday 23rd March in Lyminge Village Hall commencing at 7.45pm .  Tickets will cost £5.00 for adults and £2.50 for children.  Watch this space for more details!

For Sale

Shipping magazines, scrapbooks of newspaper cuttings of ships and news + other shipping ephemera.  Mainly dated 1972-96.

Also
145 copies of “Bygone Kent” Volumes 1-12 complete.  Space needed so any offers considered.  Will sell separately.  Telephone: 862561.

The Electoral Register

Judith Lansdell kindly brought the following matter to our attention following a recent article in the Daily Express.

Until recently it was thought that councils were legally obliged to sell the registers of electors they compile to anyone who wanted them.  This could be a source of all that ghastly junk mail, but there are also fears that burglars and fraudsters could exploit the electoral roll.  Nevertheless, failure to register is a criminal offence.

However, a recent court ruling has decided that we voters can now choose to be removed from the electoral register that companies buy.  A spokesman for the Department of Transport, Local Government and the regions is quoted as saying, “Anyone can now contact their electoral registration office at their local council and say, ‘I don’t want a list with my name on it to be sold to any commercial organisation’”.  And apparently they are legally obliged to respect the individual’s wishes.

If “anyone gives this a whirl” with Shepway District Council please let the Editor know how you get on (on 863197) (and the contact name or number)

A Note from James Butcher!

Apologies to the person who ‘phoned me about the use of Tayne Field; I’ve mislaid your name and number.  Please could you give me another ring!  James Butcher, telephone: 863581.

Lyminge Handbells

The Lyminge Handbell Ringers have had a very busy festive season with eight engagements in the weeks leading up to Christmas, raising money for the Pilgrims Hospice.  We were pleased to play on three occasions in the Parish Church to celebrate the coming of Christmas.  This was satisfying for the group, as this is the home of the bells.  We now look forward to further engagements with bookings already made for January.  The bells are available at weekends and evenings at any local venue or at your home for a minimum donation of £30.  If you are interested please call Stuart Hunnisett on 862530 or Ro Edmond on 863201, but please give us plenty of notice.

Demelza House

The “Bring and Buy” and Sale of Christmas cards, etc. on 21 November, raised £577.  Aileen Makey won the cake.  Thank you very much to all those helpers and to those who supported us.               Marion Hoare 862913.

Etchinghill W.I.

The month of December proved both interesting and entertaining.  Mrs. Cross, who had given three years of her time as our President, retired and Mrs. Syrett was elected to replace her. Our Secretary, Mrs. Samuels agreed to stand again. Mrs. Morgan arranged a Christ-mas dinner for us at the Kings Arms, Elham which was much enjoyed by everyone. Our meeting on 11 Decem-ber was our Christmas Tea party. The ladies on the Committee produced a lovely tea. The Speakers, who had been teachers in the Seventies, told us of the plan-ning that went on to produce the Pantomimes and Nativ-ity Plays, everyone wanting to be in the leading parts.

Part Three of “Collections Towards a History – Lyminge Park , by Duncan Harrison

(If you know of any errors or omissions – or can add anything, please let the Editor know.  Part 1 was in October’s issue and part 2 was in December’s issue)

In 1719 John Blunt of London Esq and Susanna his wife sold to Jacob Sawbridge “And also all that park or reputed park of Lymidge alias Luninidge alias Lunininge now disparked situated lying and being in the parish of Lymminge alias Lummynge alias Lumminge in the county of Kent and all that the scite of land whereon lately stood a messuage tenement or farm called Park House farm or by whatsoever other name or names the same is or hath been called or known  And all the fourteen or more pieces or parcels of land meadow arabale and pasture to the said messuage tenement or farm belonging or therewith now or heretofore used let or occupied or enjoyed containing in the whole by estimation two hundred and forty acres be the same more or less and being heretofore or reputed to be part of the said Park and now planted with ash and willow and so about in part upon Stelling Manes Common in other part on Canterbury Lane and another part on the lands hereinafter mentioned” The long document also mentions Droveway Farm (100a) Sawkins Farm alias Park Gate Farm (160a) Westwood (280a), Goar Wood (42a), West Wood (280a) in the parish of Lyminge alias Lymynge alias Lymedge (CKS: U55/T599 & enrolled in Chancery 2 May 1719).

The West Wood and Park Wood were acquired by the Forestry Commission in 1925 from the Erle Drax family

Gardening Jobs for January
Sow Sweet Peas, if not done in the Autumn.  Take root cuttings from dormant perennials.  Continue to check the green house, clearing away any dead foliage to help prevent disease.  Enjoy the snowdrops in flower and when dividing them after flowering, give some to friends so they can look forward to enjoying them next year.
A Happy Gardening Year for 2002.

 Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards.  We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating.  So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again!  Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market.  Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
