THE
LYMINGE NEWSLETTER
January 2001
Produced
by
The Lyminge Association
Community Matters
HAPPY NEW
YEAR!!
A Parishioner has
submitted the following poem….
Name
the Village of Trees
Having a curving central
road
Majestic fringing of beech and elm
Church bells of exquisite tone
An arty sign depicting realm
A school, a hall in constant use
Arbours and greens to rest a while
A friendly pub spurring news and views
Useful shops within the mile
Pleasing humans young and old
A cordial word to lift the day
Gardens so pretty to behold
Traffic and fumes seem far away
Answer: It's the
purposeful mellow village of Lyminge
With air, life and trees on the fringe
FMS

Apologies….
- Sorry the
Newsletter is late - Christmas and the New Year were as hectic as ever
for your Newsletter Editor!
- The Lyminge
Millennium Committee apologises to anyone who was disappointed that
there was no lantern-lit procession this New Year's Eve. In the end,
we decided that it would be better not to bury the Millennium Time
Capsule, but to seal it into a glass case and place it in a public
building. Although, obviously, this will not happen at such a
significant time as the change of one year to another, it will still
contain items of significance to the period. Having discussed its
future, we thought it would be reasonable to suggest that it should
not be opened for a hundred years. We felt that it would not be too
huge a burden to the owners/keepers of a public building to look after
it for that period - and it's contents would have a much greater
likely-hood of surviving if they were kept above ground. (Watch this
space!). So since the burying ceremony was not taking place there was
little point in having the procession (and we felt that there was not
a great deal of enthusiasm for it) - and as it happened it was a
horrible evening, so it was perhaps just as well.

Letter
to the Editor
The name and address of
this contributor are known to the Newsletter Editor, but the contributor
wished to withhold them.
Dear Editor,
"As a parent,
childminder, and pre-school worker I wish to make it known how sad and
disappointed I am to find that Lyminge Parish Council have voted against
offering some financial support to the Lyminge School Building Project.
This is phase two of a larger project to build a seventh classroom. Phase
two plans are to convert the corridor library into a room and build a new
computer suite to support the ever increasing need to offer ICT skills
within the curriculum. The school can at present offer one computer to up
to thirty children.
"The school
asked the Parish Council for finance to cover 50% of Phase Two of the
building project. The other 50% is being raised by the Parents and Friends
of Lyminge School. Phase One, the classroom extension has sufficient
funding.
"I appreciate
the concern that it would have affected the council tax bill for each
household, but the increase would have been less than an average small
chocolate bar per week for a year only. Why can we not see that the
children are the adults of tomorrow and supporting their learning is such
a valuable contribution in their futures and Lyminge School needs to keep
up with other schools in offering computer skills and opportunities? The
reputation of a school will affect the value of the houses of the parish,
and if we cannot offer better facilities in ICT, then people will move to
different places to ensure children have access to these facilities.
"It is with
great sadness to hear that Liz Coleman has resigned from Lyminge Parish
Council. She has been a great supported for the needs of the children of
the village and her departure worries me as the majority of the Lyminge
Parish Council do not feel equally committed.
"There has been
no explanation given by Lyminge Parish Council for their refusal to
financially support the request. Please can the Parish Council make an
official statement to qualify their actions to all those people of all
ages with or without children at the school who have offered their support
for the proposal?"
From a very
disappointed parent.

Handbells
to be Refurbished
Thanks to the continued
generosity and support from many within our community the Lyminge
Handbells will be dispatched for refurbishment in the New Year. The work
will take in the region of 6 weeks to complete after which we shall
naturally be keen to show off the bells within the village and local area.
We expect to play at Lyminge Day and at other summer 2001 events, but if
you would like to hear the sound of the newly refurbished bells earlier,
at a special celebration or event, then let us know and we will do our
best to come along. A minimum donation of £40 would be appreciated to
ensure the bells are properly maintained. Evenings and weekends only
please. Call Liz McNaughton on 863983 or Ro Edmond on 863201 for details.

Plants
Stolen
A cowardly thief stole a
selection of newly planted heathers from the garden of a disabled man in
Hogben Close on Thursday night 7th December. A small juniper
bush was also stolen. Perhaps the thief would care to return the juniper,
which was of sentimental value!

Pilgrims' Hospice in Ashford

Shireen West,
Administrator
Building work for the new
hospice, which is situated on the A20 near junction 10 of the M20
motorway, has been completed. We are now fitting out and equipping the new
building in order that the first patients can be admitted at the beginning
of 2001.
The Pilgrims' Hospice in
Ashford will provide care for sufferers of terminal illnesses, mainly
cancer. Facilities will include 22 in-patient beds, a large day centre
able to take up to 15 patients a day and a Palliative Care team of 16
nurses providing care and support for patients in their own homes. No
charge is made in respect of the care of any patient.
The target for the Pilgrims
Hospice Appeal 2000 was £3,500,000 by the end of the year. Owing to the
extraordinary generosity of the local community funds raised exceed £3,250,000.
The Appeal Committee would like to thank everybody who has supported
Appeal 2000 over the past two years. Continuing support is essential if
the final goal is to be achieved.
To help with fundraising,
coffee mornings and bring and buy sales will continue to be held
throughout the year on the first Wednesday of every month at Holy Trinity
Church Hall, Sandgate Road from 10.00am to 12 noon. The next one will be
on Wednesday 7 February.
Our new hospice cannot run
without the assistance of volunteers, either in the hospice, the gardens
or by providing transport. If you feel able to help us in any way, Shireen
will be pleased to hear from you.
It is intended that there
will be an opportunity for people to get to know the hospice through an
Open Day - perhaps more than one - likely to be towards the end of
November. Please look out for details in the local press, or contact the
above number a little nearer the time.

Sabre
Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units
in our own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of
being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the
fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding
Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating. So,
if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would
look out of place, think again! Maintenance free, sealed units,
spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative
'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market.
Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe
- they know a good window when they see one!
