not essential. There are usually no more than three or four meetings per
year. Salary and expenses are paid. If a suitable person is appointed, he
or she could start before 31 March next. For an informal chat about the
job, please contact the current Clerk, Max Laker on 840471 or the

Lyminge Handbells Appeal
Many readers will have heard the handbells, especially at Christmas and
recall the unique sound they contribute to such an occasion. They were
donated to the church in the early sixties and sadly, are now in poor
condition, with repairs and restoration becoming quite urgent.
The bellringers have decided to launch an appeal to raise funds to
carry out the necessary work, with the intention that the handbells will
be as good as new by the Millennium. The amount needed is £3,000! This
may seem a large sum, but five bells need recasting and the remainder
re-tuning. In addition, all of the moving parts require attention, and the
leather handles replacing.
Up until now, the handbells have been used mainly by the bellringers,
either to practise their change ringing skills, or to ring music at
Christmas, village fetes, etc. Restoring the bells would provide an
excellent opportunity to widen the scope of usage, perhaps by establishing
a village handbell team that met regularly throughout the year.
If you would like to contribute anything to the appeal, please send
donations to me at "Whisper Cottage", Rectory Lane, Lyminge.
Cheques should be made payable to "Lyminge Handbells Appeal".
Alternatively, we are also looking for persons with a flair for fund
raising who would like to be involved in the project. John Mitchell,
Handbell Advisor, Lyminge Bellringers. Telephone: 863796.
The Lyminge Association has been pleased to help start this appeal
with a contribution of £200.

Elham Valley Lions Club
Elham Valley Lions were out and about in the Elham Valley in the weeks
before Christmas giving Santa a hand collecting for the needy. A total of
15 outings for Lion Santa and Rudolph collected in excess of £3,700. This
has provided food parcels and electricity vouchers for over 100 needy
families and has funded five Christmas parties for the elderly.
Lion President, John Clayton, who was one of those knocking on doors,
said, "It was a marvellous effort this year; our best yet".
Thanks to all those who gave so generously and especially for the help
given by Liz Bailey of the Whole Hog Celebratory Arts Group in building
such a magnificent Rudolph to guide Santa on his travels. The float was
better than ever!
The Lions have been helping Santa for over 20 years and have, thanks to
the generosity of all those who have contributed, been able to give those
less fortunate a little extra at Christmas. Thank you all for your help.
Lyminge W.I.
Our first meeting of the New Year was a very interesting one. Mr.
Godden gave us a talk and slides on Western Norway, which we all enjoyed.
The Competition was a photo of a winter scene; 1srt Mrs. Harris, 2nd Mrs.
Longley and 3rd Mrs. Wareham.
Lyminge Senior Citizens' Club
The Senior Citizens' Club enjoyed slides on America given by Mr. Godden.
One the 6th of January we held a New Year Tea party. This was attended by
27 of our members. We sang carols and had a lovely tea and a beautiful
cake iced by Mr. Hayward. Every member received a Christmas present on
leaving. Dorothy Bain.
The following letter has been received from Mr. Norman J. King, of
10 Kimberley Terrace, Lyminge
"Dear Madam,
"I have just received and read, a copy of the Lyminge Newsletter
for the current month.
"I have read with amazement, that Lyminge has received a Nation
Award for care and support of older people. I have lived, as a newcomer,
in Lyminge for 12 years, and as I am almost an octogenarian, I would be
most interested in care and support. Obviously, it has passed me by, for
regrettably, I have seen no evidence of the qualities, which apparently
have prompted the award, in question. Indeed, I feel that if Lyminge is
the acme for the nation, in this matter, I must extend my sympathy to the
residents of the other communities, who failed to match up to Lyminge's
apparently high standards.
"Fortunately, I have only sought support on one issue, namely the
signing of the road in which I live. On several occasions I have
approached the Parish Council on this matter, and on each occasion
sympathetic noises have accompanied a "pushing under the
carpet".
"In desperation, I approached Shepway Council, who informed me
that they had no objection to the signing of Kimberley Terrace, provided
that I met the cost of doing so! Precious little support there, either
from my Parish Councillors, or the local authority.
"This is the only occasion upon which I have sought support, and
in future, I wouldn't repeat the exercise, no matter how many plaques
Lyminge received for in my experience, the care and support referred to,
is most elusive."
Editor's reply:
1. Care and support of the elderly
On behalf of the very many in the village who do care and support the
elderly in our community, I feel very sad that Mr. King should feel so
negative about this award. I suggest that he read the submission, a copy
of which is available in the Library. There he will read about the many
aspects which make Lyminge a good place to live. In the citation at the
award ceremony one of the key things highlighted was the subtlety of
support for those who need it. Mr. Hayward, for instance, takes a basket
of groceries and bread around the flats in Nailbourne Court, saving people
the walk to the shops.
2. The Signing of Kimberley Terrace
The Parish Council is aware of the strength of Mr. King's opinion
regarding the signing of Kimberley Terrace and indeed shares his concern
that the emergency services may have difficulties locating people with
this address. To this end they have regularly corresponded with Shepway
District Council on the subject, for it is SDC who are responsible for
road signs, not the Parish Council.
It is a timely reminder to us all to ensure that we have our map
grid reference taped to our telephones to give when we call 999.
Nevertheless, the emergency services do have very technologically advanced
location systems.
I have copied Mr. King's letter to Age Concern, The Chairman of the
Parish Council, Derrick Hamer and David Monk, one of our Ward
Representatives for SDC.
