THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER
February 2003
Produced by
The Lyminge Association
This is
the Penultimate Issue of the Newsletter
As far as I am aware, no
one has yet come forward to take over the editorship (or an aspect of it)
when I finish. The March issue will be the last issue which I
produce. I am sorry, but I really must give up. I simply
cannot produce the Newsletter on time with work commitments etc.
Please don’t let the Newsletter die. If you are newly retired and
have a computer at home, you would be ideal! As has been said
before, no one need take on the entire task; it can easily be separated
out into different roles. Please ring Jeff on 862732 or Liz on
863197.
Liz Coleman.
AN INVITATION to visit
LYMINGE SCHOOL
Church of England Primary
OPEN DAY
TUESDAY 11th FEBRUARY 2003
Guided tours around the school, lasting about 30 minutes, will start
promptly at 11am and 2.00pm
This is our second year of opening the school to the village and
parents of small children who may be considering the school in the future.
If you are interested to see:
• excellent teaching and learning in superb surroundings
• a warm, village school atmosphere
• a well resourced and stimulating environment
• our purpose built Foundation Stage Classroom
then please come and meet the children, staff and Headteacher.
Interested?
Then please contact the school on:
01303
862367
or email us at Headteacher@lyminge.kent.sch.uk
to book your place.
Lyminge School, Church Road, Lyminge CT18 8JA
Thank you for the very
positive response to last month’s article! Here are a few more
hints and tips (thank you to Dottie Cross for some of them):
- Spectacles. Old
pairs of spectacles can be popped into a box in the Library or at the
Shorncliffe dump. Experts check them out and then they are sent
to aid those in deprived countries.
- Aluminium/foil
dishes and containers. You know, the containers you have
left over from a take-away…. These should be rinsed out and
then taken to the Hospice, where they have a bin for them. I
suspect that if you went to the coffee mornings which are held on the
first Wednesday of each month down at Holy Trinity in Folkestone, that
they would probably be able to take them off you.
- Professional
Journals. Rather than put these in the paper bin, you could
send them to Educational Aid (http://www.educationalaid.org.uk/).
This is a charity based in London that collects material mainly for
developing countries. Your only responsibility is to get the
material to them.
- Junk Mail. You
can put a stop to most of this if you contact the Mailing Preference
Service (MPS). Registering is FREE and they say it removes some
95% of the rubbish on the door mat. Responsible direct mailing
companies do not want to upset anyone or waste time and money.
You may wish to consider this as well when you have suffered a
bereavement (so that you stop the mail coming for the deceased family
member) and also if you have moved and want to top direct mail being
sent to your previous address. If you receive mail which is
incorrectly addressed, let the company know and as soon as they try
sending it to the correct address, it will be stopped! Contact
MPS at DMA House, 70 Margaret Street, London. W1W 8SS.
Telephone 020 7291 3310 or via the web at www.mpsonline.org.uk
- Junk ‘phone
calls. There is a similar service which will put a stop to
double glazing salesmen etc. It is also useful if you have a fax
machine and get a lot of junk faxes. Contact the Telephone
Preference Service at 5th Floor, Haymarket House, 1 Oxendon
Street, London SW1Y 4EE. Telephone 020 7766 4420 or fax 020 7976
1886. email tps@dma.org.uk
or web site at www.tps.org.uk
- Christmas cards.
Last time I looked there were boxes at branches of WH Smiths where you
could dump your old Christmas cards for recycling.
- Garden refuse.
Sorry! The facts given last month were not accurate on this one
– the brown-topped wheelie bins were only issued as a trial to the
residents of Lyminge (not Etchinghill etc.) and the Council are now
evaluating their trial results to see if this service will continue.
- Holiday coins.
Rather than sling your foreign loose change into your underwear drawer
(!), put it to good cause. There are several banks or building
societies (e.g. Halifax) which will take foreign coins and then
convert them to a British currency donation to charities.
Any more
ideas/hints/tips? Please let the Editor know.

Beachborough Toad Migration 2003
Following last year’s successful migration, over 4000
common toads were safely crossed to their spawning ponds at
Beachborough Park.
The time for this year’s migration is fast approaching and we
are looking to add to our team of dedicated volunteers. If
you are interested in wildlife conservation and can spare a few
hours a week during February/March/April to assist in a truly
worthwhile cause and also to aid in scientific research, please
‘phone Brett on 863198 (evenings) or Alan on 862663 for further
details.
Come along to our introductory meeting at 2.00pm at Lyminge Scout
Hut if you would like to know more.
Tuesday 4 March
Lyminge Historical Society
The new 2003 Season of Talks and Outings starts next month
at the Methodist Church Hall with a Talk on a subject which
affects all of us in this area:
“The Elham Valley:
its Nailbourne and its Water Supply”.
Many of use have suffered the effects, both directly and
indirectly of the floods two years ago and it seem probable that
these will occur again in the near future. Further,
developments in the area have begun to question the availability
of adequate water for our increasing personal, social and leisure
usages. We are most fortunate that Richard Monk, C.Eng.
MICE MIWEM, one-time Deputy Engineer and Manager of the
Folkestone and District Water Company, has agreed to address us on
this subject of most topical interest.
Visitors are welcome to attend at £2.00 per person. Lyminge
Historical Society meets on the first Tuesday in each month at the
Lyminge Methodist church Hall and visitors are always welcome.
Tea and coffee are available after each Meeting. Any
questions to Bob Gay on 862574.
Members who have not already paid are reminded that Annual
Subscriptions of £7.00 are due.

Thank you
Triana and Colin Ritchie would like to thank everyone in
Lyminge who sent them so many messages of sympathy and memories of
Rodger Ritchie, who died suddenly on 20th December
2002. The East Berkshire College, where Rodger worked
thought the village was wonderful in its efforts to help contact
us (the family) about Rodger’s death.
The Lyminge Abbeyfield
Society, Rivulet House
The Society is looking for a caring and responsible person
who would be willing on occasional weekends to do two consecutive
overnight sleep-in duties on a paid basis. Rivulet is a
friendly house in the centre of the village and is home to six
independent elderly people. If you are interested, please
contact the Chairman, Mrs. Freda McDougall, on 840420 for further
information and application details.
And
the winner is…..
A thank you to everybody who entered the competition to name the
untitled painting at last month’s art exhibition at the Library.
The committee found it too difficult to choose just one winner, so
we decided upon three. These are: Rosaline Sheppard
– “Re-cycled Man”, Alice Davis – “Chain Male” and
Susan Foster – “Risen from the Ashes”. Thank you also
to Lamorna Manning for so painstakingly completing the
questionnaire.
Adele Entwistle.
Shepway
District Council
As of February 2003, there will be a communications link
installed at Lyminge Library that will connect to the Council’s
One-Stop Services at Hythe and New Romney. The link will
provide residents at Lyminge with access to Council services five
days a week. Together with the permanent link, an officer
will visit Lyminge Library every Thursday, commencing 6th
February, from 2.00pm to 5.00pm to assist with all Council
enquiries.
The Council’s One-Stop Services at Hythe and New Romney provide
a host of information on all Council services and tourist
information. The services operate Tuesday to Saturday from
9.00am to 4.30pm and close for lunch between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.
During July and August the One-Stop services are open on Sunday
from 11.00am – 4.00pm.
Come along to Lyminge Library to see how the communications link
and the officer can help you.
PALS
Got a local health-related problem? Don’t know
where to turn to for help? Friendly and prompt service
(based in Canterbury). If we don’t know the answer
immediately, we will find out and get back to you – and that’s
a promise! Ring the NHS Patient Advice and Liaison Service
on 0845 601 5890.
Lyminge Handbells
The bell ringers are happy to play at weekends and
evenings at any local venue or at your home, for a minimum
donation of £30, but please give us plenty of notice. Our
selected charity is the Pilgrims Hospice. If you are
interested in hearing us, or perhaps joining us, please call
Stuart Hunnisett on 862530 or Ro Edmond on 863201.
Lyminge Pre-School
Playgroup
A safe and welcoming place for your child to make friends,
play, learn and make a smooth transition to school, with which we
have a very close liaison. Every session is supervised by
trained and experienced staff. Sessions take place weekdays
during term-time at Lyminge Village Hall, 9.00am – 12 noon (or
1.00pm – the additional hour is optional and a packed lunch
should be provided). The standard session is £5.50 and the
extended session is £7.00. Children may start from 2½
years old.
The Playgroup is a member of the Pre-school Learning Alliance and
meets standards set by KCC and OFSTED. The most recent,
excellent OFSTED report stated, “…In this thriving Playgroup
the children are making good progress towards the Early Learning
Goals. There is a strong partnership with parents and carers
which contributed positively to the children’s good progress.”

Lyminge WI
Unfortunately, January’s meeting had to be cancelled due
to the bad weather. Such a shame after the busy time we had
leading up to Christmas. As well as all the activities
listed in the last Newsletter, at our November meeting we were
very pleased to present our “Mitten Tree” (lots of pairs of
warm colourful mittens knitted by our members hung on a Christmas
Tree) to Patty Baxter from the Hope Romania charity.
In February (see our main notice) the talented Beverley Weekes
will be giving a talk and demonstration on glass painting.
Visitors, as always, are very welcome so do come along and join
us.
Lyminge Dramatic Society
– A Chorus of Disapproval
Our next production will be Alan Ayckbourn’s “A Chorus
of Disapproval” and it will run from Wednesday 2nd to
Saturday 5th April at Lyminge Village Hall. Senior
Citizens are invited free of charge to the dress rehearsal on
Tuesday 1st April. All performances will commence at
7.45pm.
Pete Raine will direct this hilarious play, about a lonely
widower who joins a local operatic society. Tickets will go on
sale on Saturday 15th March at Haxtons Estate Agents in
Lyminge.
Finally, don’t forget that the staging which the Society has
bought will be a permanent feature at our productions. The staging
is used to create raised seating for the rear 6 rows in the Hall
and was voted a big success at ‘Arabian Nights’. The Society
was fortunate to receive a generous grant from the Community Fund,
South East Office for the purchase of the staging.
Lyminge Short Mat Bowls
Club
Why not join us for a social, but competitive, evening
playing Short Mat Bowls? We are a friendly Club of mixed
ages. Skill and technique gradually develop with help from
the more experienced bowlers. We meet Tuesday and Thursday
evenings from 6.30pm in the Lyminge Village Hall, where three 43
foot mats await our concentration and fun. Sets of bowls are
available for beginners. Please turn up and have a go.
More details from Vicki, our Secretary on 862293.

Rhodes Minnis Evening
Circle
At the January Meeting we were all taken to Egypt for a
cruise up the Nile by Eileen Sless. Eileen went to Egypt, 2
months after the massacre at the Temple of Queen Hetshepsut (5
years ago) and because of this Egypt was empty of tourists and
security was extremely high.
We were transported into another world of history, sunshine and
beautiful sunsets, just the thing to brighten up a damp January
evening. Two examples of Egyptian dress (male and female) were
displayed along with various tourist information books and a map
of the Nile.
The Competition: Molly Walker 1st, Ronnie Mozley 2nd,
Pauline Hodder 3rd and Mary Pittman 4th.
Wednesday 19 February
Rhodes Minnis Village Hall

(40mm) needles; design of your own choice. The squares will
eventually be joined to make a blanket for Operation Sunshine, so
we look forward to seeing many entries.
A warm welcome to visitors and members alike, if you would like
any more details please contact Eileen Sless on 01303 863081

Tips for February
An article in “Gardening Which” this month identified
another endangered species, the Garden Gnome. Due to lack of
demand, some manufacturers have ceased producing them. Could
it be that the current crop of garden designers frown upon them?
Whatever the reason, when visiting the garden centre this year,
include a gnome in your purchases and help maintain a good British
tradition!
