The
Lyminge Association was grieved to learn of the recent death of Sandy
Hall. Sandy, even when he lived a little distant from the village
itself, was very much part of it, as are all his family. All the
Hall family has given so much of their time, enthusiasm and fun to this
community and he will be sorely missed, not just by his immediate family,
but by us all. The “Halls of Lyminge” are very much in our
thoughts at this sad time.
The
Lyminge Association
As well as
producing this monthly Newsletter, which is delivered to all houses in
Lyminge, Etchinghill, Rhodes Minnis and Postling, the Aims of the Lyminge
Association are:
• To foster a community spirit amongst the residents of the civil parish
of Lyminge
• To preserve and improve existing village amenities
• To create and secure further village amenities
• To encourage and support cultural, sporting, recreational and
educational activities in the village
• To endure that the history of the parish of Lyminge is recorded.
There is no subscription to be a member of the Lyminge Association – all
members of the community may take advantage of its facilities. If
the Lyminge Association does make any surplus to funds (from all our
fund-raising activities – not just the Newsletter), it is ploughed back
into the Community. We have recently paid £1,000 to the Lyminge
Methodist Church to help with their requirement for modernised facilities
(including a ramp) and £1,000 to the school to help with the new-build
(which everyone in the community will benefit from, since the building,
including its hall, is to be made more available for community
purposes). Other donations have included to the Scout Group, Age
Concern, the Handbell Ringers and Sibton Park Cricket Club.

Charity Wine and Wisdom Night
at
7.30pm
Lyminge Village Hall
Rebecca Chisnall of
Station Road
has been selected by the charity, Project Trust, to spend a year in
China
, working with young people in the
Guangdong
province. She leaves in August of this year, swapping the lanes of
Lyminge for ......she is not quite sure what! To fund this project, she
has to raise £3550 which covers transport, accommodation and basic living
expenses.
Are you able to help her raise this money? Do you fancy an evening of fun
with a bit of thinking thrown in for good measure? Perhaps you could
get a table together for the Quiz Night?
If you can help, please give Mike and Linda Chisnall a ring on 862743
to book a table.
Tables will be for up to eight persons at £5 per head which will include
a light supper. Please bring your own liquid refreshments! If you
cannot make this evening but would like to help her efforts, any donation,
however small would be very gratefully received. Many thanks!

Wine and Wisdom Evening
This very active group, which encompasses all levels of the Scout
and Guide Association, is raising funds for urgent repairs needed to the
elderly, but well used Scout Hut. We are starting with a Wine and
Wisdom Family Evening – with a difference! Come and have fun while
supporting a good local cause for our children. Contact Trevor White
on 840361.
A
note to Secretaries….
Although copy date for the Newsletter is 18th of the
month, if you can let the Newsletter Editor know of a forthcoming event by
the end of the month preceding (i.e. for March, by the end of
January) it will be put on the Shepway website, which is coordinated by
Shepway DC tourist office. All “dates for the diary” entries are
also submitted to the local papers’ “Village News” sections. The
pupils of
Lyminge
School
organise this service!
Lyminge
School
The new building is now in use! “Sunbeams” (the reception class)
have been in their lovely new classroom since after Christmas and the
staff room above only awaits the new furniture before it can be fully
functional. At the other end of the scale, the heating packed up in
the mobile unit, so class 6 was moved indoors. A huge upheaval for
one and all – but exciting nevertheless. The computer suite in the
former music room has also proved an enormous boon to the school.
There will be an Open Day on Friday 22 February for everyone who
would like to have a look around (particularly if you are considering
Lyminge
School
for your child). There will be tours starting at
10.30am
and
2.00pm
and if you are interested in coming, please give the school a telephone
call if you can.
On Friday 15 March there will be a Grand Opening of the new
facilities, and again, everyone will be most welcome to attend – more
details in next month’s Newsletter.

The
Church Bells
Many of you will have noticed that the Church bells are not
ringing for Sunday services or on Monday evenings. This is because
the bells have gone to White-chapel Foundry in
London
to begin their refurbishment. Our ‘ring’ of eight bells varies
in age from the eldest, which was cast in 1631, to mere youngsters of less
than one hundred years of age; the three newest were cast in 1904.
They have had no serious work done since the beginning of the last century
and some of the headstocks and fittings have reached the end of their
useful lives.
Work to refurbish them began on 2 January, when they were removed from the
tower. We hope to have them back before Easter, retuned, re-hung,
and ready to go on ringing for another century or more. Whilst the
bells are away, we also intend to de-rust and repaint the steel bell frame
in the tower, and the ringers are keen to obtain new bell ropes. All
this will cost about £19,000, including VAT. As you can imagine,
anyone who wishes to make a donation towards this huge sum will be very
welcome, and can do so by contacting any of the PCC or through the Church
Office at Lanfranc.
Lyminge
Handbells
The Lyminge Handbell Ringers were pleased to play at a special
anniversary in mid-January and look forward to receiving more bookings for
the spring and summer. During this time we also have the opportunity
of training new ringers, so if you think you would like to have a try
please let us know. You will be made most welcome The bells
are available at weekends and evenings at any local venue or at your home
for a minimum donation of £30. If you are interested please call
Stuart Hunnisett on 862530 or Ro Edmond on 863201, but please give us
plenty of notice.

Lyminge
Dramatic Society
Our Spring production will be the fast-moving comedy “Party
Piece”, written by Richard Harris of ‘Outside Edge’ fame.
Set in suburbia, in the back gardens of feuding neighbours, it is
Michael and Roma’s house warming party. The evening looks set to be a
lively one until a string of hilarious disasters threatens to ruin the
occasion. The play will run from Wednesday the 20th to Saturday
23rd March in Lyminge Village Hall commencing at
7.45pm
. Tickets will cost £5-00 for adults and £2-50 for children. Senior
Citizens will be admitted free of charge at the Dress Rehearsal - more
details next month. Tickets will go on sale on 2nd March at
G.W.Finn and Son. Don’t miss this one !
A
Genealogical Web
My name is David Cork and I was brought up in the Sandwich/Eastry
area. My maternal grandmother was born Mary Ann Bailey in Arpinge in
1876. I have spent 2 years researching the family and I am amazed at
the number of families in the Elham, Lyminge, Acrise area that link into
the family.
I now wonder in this modern nomadic world if there are any living
descendents of these families which were common to many of the villages
between Folkestone and
Canterbury
in the 1800's still living locally. I would be interested to hear
from anybody who descends from any of the families set out below:
Barton, Beer, Beaumont, Bailey, Blanche, Carswell, Court, Crouch, Croud,
Ellen, Ellender, Fagg, File, For(e)man, Gammon, Hambrook, Hogben, Marsh,
Nutley, Pegden, Raines, Rigden, Rodgers, Shrubsole, Smith, Spicer, Stroud,
Taylor, Thomas, Tritton, Webb, Whitnall, Wood.
Please contact me if you have any links with any of the above.

School
Buses
We are delighted that children going to
Folkestone
School
for Girls are now (mostly) getting to school on time. Following
pressure from a group of concerned parents, Stagecoach agreed to adjust
the timetable. However, there are still problems with this service
and the one to
Canterbury
. On the first day of term, the bus from Folkestone did not arrive; the
girls were left outside school and had to ‘phone home to be
collected. We are continuing to meet (and are pleased that Cllr
David Monk is contributing his time and support to the group). If
you would like to join the campaign, or just to add your own experiences,
do get in touch. The next meeting is on Wednesday 20 February at
8.00pm

Bin
Bag Hazards
Please place your bags of rubbish for the dustman with care,
preferably just inside the entrance to your driveway (if you have
one). A client of Age Concern, who is partially sighted, fell over a
sack one evening. He cut his head badly and bruised his face.
Wheelie
Bins
Not much longer for bin bags anyway! Wheelie bins are coming
to our area starting in February of this year. The special small
vehicle which collects rubbish from households with restricted access
(e.g.
Westfield Lane
, Etchinghill), will be specially adapted. If you do not need a
large wheelie bin (which might be a bit difficult to maneuver for a single
person), you can get a smaller one – just ring
Shepway
DC
offices to let them know.

Toad Migration
2002
The time is approaching for the annual migration across
the (former) B2065 near
Beachborough
Park
. Last year over 2,300 toads were successfully crossed,
allowing them to spawn in the local ponds, and they will,
hopefully, be returning this year to do the same. If you
are interested in conservation and would like to join our group
of dedicated volunteers, please ‘phone Brett on 863198
(evenings) for further information.
Many hands make light work!

The January meeting of
Lyminge
WI
started the year in good form with a most interesting evening given by
local artist Tony Blaine. He interjected his demonstration
with lots of witty repartee which was warmly received by
members. Tony demonstrated his skill in the use of water
colour and very generously donated the picture he painted as a raffle
prize.

Our Speaker this month was the very popular historian, Mr. Bob
Ogley. His talk this time was entitled, “The Spirit of Invicta”.
We were told how important
Kent
had been over the past years to the present day and the arrival of the
Channel Tunnel and Rail Link. He also spoke of the very important
part aerodromes such as Hawkinge and Biggin Hill played during the last
war. The competition this month was, “A Kentish Photograph”,
which was won by Kate Towse. Four ladies received birthday posies,
one of whom was Mrs. Gillander, who celebrated her 90th
birthday.
Gardening
Hints
The garden is beginning to show signs of life and spring is
hopefully not too far away. In the middle of the month, roses can be
given a hard pruning, as can honeysuckles. Cut back late-flowering
clematis and buddleias. Any perennials left for their flower-heads
through the winter can now be cut back and seeds sown in trays to increase
stock. Other seeds can be started in a warm green-house, leave until
March if not heated.
Continue to feed the birds, keeping feeders well out of the reach of cats,
the principal killers of garden birds. A report from the RSPB states
that the 10 million and more cats in the
UK
take in excess of 70 million birds per years, as well as glow-worms, slow
worms etc. – and the frogs in my pond.

Sabre
Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our
own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of
being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the
fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding
Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating.
So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would
look out of place, think again! Maintenance free, sealed
units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative
'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the
market. Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the
UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
