Combat Vandalism in the Elham Valley
Following discussions with
the Police, a PUBLIC MEETING has been arranged in Elham Village hall at
7.30pm to discuss ways which the villagers of Lyminge and Elham can assist
the Police by keeping a low profile watch on incidents of vandalism and
public nuisance. No one is being asked to become a vigilante, but a member
of the Police Force will put forward ideas that may help stamp out
anti-social behaviour and drug-taking which, as caring adults, none of us
wish to see our young people involved in.

Patchwork Workshop
If you have a sewing
machine and can thread the needle, you are warmly welcome to join us at
our monthly workshop! Workshops are to be held on the third Saturday of
each month. This month members will discover a REALLY EASY way of making a
"Bargello"-type patchwork. This can then be devel-oped into a
wall-hanging or used for the following month's workshop, which will be to
make a magic-fold-up-into-a-bag seat-cover/cushion which you can take with
you every time you will be sitting on a plastic stackable chair, often
found in village halls! You don't have to come to the February workshop to
be able to make the seat-saver. Phone Liz on 863197 for further
information and to find out where it will be held - it depends on how many
want to come! Cost will be £7.50 and it will run from 10.00am-4.00pm.

Lyminge
Pre-School Playgroup
A safe and welcoming place
for your child to play, learn and make friends, supervised by trained and
experienced staff. The Playgroup aims to help children make a smooth
transition to school. Sessions are 9.00am - 1.00pm, term-time
weekdays at Lyminge Village Hall. The extra hour is optional for
those parents who wish their children to stay with us - children should
bring a packed lunch. The cost of the extended session is £7.00 per
morning and the cost of the standard session is £5.50 (four-year olds
receive Government funding to cover the cost).
Children can start at 2½
years old. The Playgroup has to meet standards set by KCC Social Services
and OFSTED, and is a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance.
Following our recent
OFSTED inspection, the Playgroup received an excellent report, an excerpt
from which states: "In this thriving Playgroup the children are
making good progress towards the Early Learning Goals, There is a strong
partnership with parents and carers which contributed positively to the
children's good progress"
More information from Lynn
Hussey on 862831.

Thanks to the continued
generosity and support from many within our community the Lyminge
Handbells will be dispatched for refurbishment in the New Year. The work
will take in the region of 6 weeks to complete after which we shall
naturally be keen to show off the bells within the village and local area.
We expect to play at Lyminge Day and at other summer 2001 events, but if
you would like to hear the sound of the newly refurbished bells earlier,
at a special celebration or event, then let us know and we will do our
best to come along. A minimum donation of £40 would be appreciated to
ensure the bells are properly maintained. Evenings and weekends only
please. Call Liz McNaughton on 863983 or Ro Edmond on 863201 for details.

WARNING OF CHANGE TO THE NEWSLETTER
From July 2001 business advertisements
will only be accepted on a one monthly, three monthly or a twelve monthly
basis so that we can pre-print pages and speed up the process of getting
the Newsletter out promptly every month. This will not affect most people
- BUT those advertisers who regularly advertise on a yearly basis (12
issues for the price of 10) and whose advertisements are due to run out
after July 2001 will be asked for a year's worth of payment starting with
the July issue - but they will be credited for the months already paid
for. This only affects business adverts. More information from Liz
Coleman on 863197 or email liz.coleman@virgin.net

The
Parents and Friends of Lyminge School
In spite of the recent
rejection of financial support by the Lyminge Parish Council for the
School Building Project, the Parents and Friends of Lyminge Primary School
remain committed to raising funds for the project. Although this is a
setback, we will endeav-tour to find other sources of funding and continue
to embark on further fundraising for the project.
I wish to take this
opportunity to thank you all on behalf of all the parents, staff and
children of Lyminge Primary School for all your support and generosity
throughout the last year and hope that it will continue.
If you have any fundraising
ideas, or information relating to additional sources of funding, please do
not hesitate to contact us.
If you wish to make any
donation to the building project, please contact the school or myself.
Claire Frost (Chair of
Parents and Friends of Lyminge School). Telephone 863717.
Etchinghill
Residents' Association
Following receipt of a
letter from the Governors of Lyminge C.E. Primary School, a vote was taken
at our recent AGM to decide whether to support a request to the local
Parish Council to raise a precept on the rates to help pay for additional
educational facilities at the school. The majority verdict was against the
motion and a letter was sent to the Board of Governors declining to
support their action.
In the light of recent
events, and information we have been given, we have decided to ballot all
the residents of Etchinghill to ascertain the views of every-one in the
village. If we are to represent the residents fairly we do need to know
their wishes, so please take the time to complete the ballot paper and
return it to one of the Committee members as indicated on the paper.
The
Beachborough Toad Colony
Many readers will be aware
of the project that was organised for the annual migration in 2000 and be
aware of the scale of the project. I am delighted to report that it was a
total success in every aspect, particularly in the way the local
communities rallied, worked together and achieved success through a common
goal. The support from local volunteers during Migration 2000 was
magnificent, which ensured success.
Migration 2000 was a start
and much was learned from the project, however, it was only a start and
the exercise must be repeated to consolidate and to continue painting a
picture of the toad colony though the collection and assessment of the
statistics. The project with the toad fence is a short-term solution to
keeping our local amphibians off the former B20645, but already, thought
and effort is being channelled into a long-term strategy.
If you want to be part of
Migration 2001 and continue the successful thrust of this very worthwhile
local conservation effort, then please contact Dave Huggins on 863203
today to find out more about the project. We do need your support to
ensure a successful project this year. Thank you.
Lyminge
Youth Dramatic Society
We are very sorry to have
to tell everyone that Cheryl and Gill can no longer run the Club. This is
due to work and other commitments for both of us and we can only thank all
the youngsters for their support and enthusiasm over the last two and a
half years. If any villager is interested in taking over this popular
club, perhaps they could contact Cheryl on 862208 or attend the AGM of the
Dramatic Society at a date to be published, probably in April.
Who
knows Hill House?
A visitor to Lyminge
Online, the Lyminge Web site, has asked for any information about Hill
House, Lyminge - was it some sort of institution established under the
poor laws? Mike Haselip, who is enquiring, has discovered that his
grandfather, Frederick Haselip, although destitute in 1907 and in a
Southwark work-house, later died at Hill House, Lyminge in 1939.
Frederick's last son, John, was born at Hill House in 1908. If you can
help Mike, please email him at mike.haselip@ukgateway.net
If you don't have access to email, please ring Liz Coleman on 863197 and
she will pass the message.
By
the way….
Don't forget that there is
a very nifty currency converter on the
Lyminge Online site - you can convert all currencies at the speed of
lightening with the up-to-date rate. There's all sorts of interesting links
to other sites as well (e.g. to Nicky Clark's selection of paintings).
Thanks as ever, to the Webmaster, Andy Sillwood.

As you know, this exciting
new venture is nearly complete, but it will always need financial
assistance. To help with fundraising, coffee mornings and bring and buy
sales will continue to be held throughout the year on the first Wednesday
of every month at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Sandgate Road from 10.00am to
12 noon. The next one will be on Wednesday 7 February. Please drop in to
support the Hospice. News of other fund-raising ideas in the next

Our new hospice cannot run
without the assistance of volunteers, either in the hospice, the gardens
or by providing transport. If you feel able to help us in any way, Shireen
will be pleased to hear from you.

The
Library
The Exhibition Boards in
the Library are not fully booked for the coming year. To mount an arts or
crafts display, the facility is free, but there is a 20% comm-ission
payable for any goods sold. Clubs or societies can use the display board
to advertise a forthcoming event or encourage new membership. Perhaps one
of the excellent photographers in the village could put a collection
together for everyone to enjoy. The displays in the library give a lot of
pleasure to the many people who regularly use the library or to those who
call in each month especially to see the exhibits. Call 862180 for
bookings.

Gardening
Tips
Pruning of roses, shrubs
and late flowering clematis can begin from the middle of the month. With
summer in mind, sow seeds of annuals and bedding plants, also tomatoes and
other greenhouse crops. Use fresh compost, not any stored over winter.
Continue to keep an eye on plants In the greenhouse, covering with fleece
when the cold weather is forecast, and putting on heat if you have any.
Let a little air into the greenhouse if the sun is out, in the middle of
the day. As the weather warms, a little watering will not go amiss.
Hopefully we can look forward to some warmer weather and a little
pottering in the garden, keeping off lawns if they are still very wet.

Sabre
Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units
in our own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of
being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the
fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding
Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating. So,
if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would
look out of place, think again! Maintenance free, sealed units,
spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative
'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market.
Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe
- they know a good window when they see one!
