Community Matters

CHAIRMAN'S ANNUAL REPORT

What a difference a year can make.  It hardly seems that a year has passed since the call for help came about the future existence of the Association.  I, and many others who care about our village, answered that call and attended the extraordinary meeting.  At this year's Annual General Meeting of the Lyminge Association (held on 29th September) 42 residents from the Parish of Lyminge attended.

Throughout the year we have held many varied events.  The Father Christmas delivery and the Charities' Coffee Morning had both been successful and the profit of £79 from the coffee morning was donated to Age Concern to enable frail and wheelchair-bound members to attend a performance of "Oliver".  Donations were also made to Sibton Park Cricket Club towards new practice nets; the Lyminge Bellringers towards the repair and renovation of the handbells and to the Methodist Church for new crockery and cutlery.  A hamper was delivered to the residents of Broadstreet House for their help in collating the Newsletters.  Approximately 180 youngsters from the Parish attended a Youth Disco organised by the Association using the £200 Youth Prize money awarded to the Village.  The small profit arising from this event was donated to the Methodist Church.

Because of our success, our auditor has recommended that the Association should apply for registered charity status, although this will mean our constitution will have to be amended.

On reflection, I believe this year has been a year of renewed vigour for the Lyminge Association.  However, none of this would have been achieved if it weren't for the committee members and volunteers, each of whom has given their precious time, energy and enthusiasm, and of course, to you who are always there to support the worthy causes.

On behalf of the Lyminge Association, may I wish you a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

Debbie Marsh, Chairman.

MORE LANTERN WORKSHOPS!

The lantern workshops, masterminded by Whole Hog Celebratory Arts at half term were very popular and a large number of lanterns were made - in all shapes and sizes!  Nevertheless, many people were not able to attend at half term and so, by popular demand several more are to be run.  They will be on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between Christmas and the New Year (28th, 29th and 30th) from 2.00pm to 5.00pm at the Scout Hut.  The workshops are FREE (we have grant funding) and open to anyone - not just children!  If you have friends and family coming to stay over the New Year - come and make them a lantern too.  Please note that all children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult.

MUSICAL WORKSHOPS

No procession is complete without a band to lead it!  And at the moment we have no band - so children of all ages are very welcome to come to the music workshops to be held in the Scout Hut on the mornings of the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between Christmas and the New Year.  You don't have to be able to play a musical instrument, just have a good sense of rhythm (although that's not essential!!)

LOOK OUT FOR POSTERS AROUND THE VILLAGE WITH MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS OR TELEPHONE: 862236.

A Millennium Service for the Village - Sunday 2nd January 11.15am at Lyminge Primary School
January the second with be the first Sunday of the new millennium and there having been time on the first for recuperation, a lie-in and an Alka Selzer, here's a chance to do something different in 2000....
The Venue: The Village School

            and to do it together!

See you there.
Millennium Candles

The Christians Together in Lyminge, having heeded the concerns of some fire authorities, have decided not to distribute the Millennium Candles to each household as originally planned, but will make them available to those who wish to collect them.  You can collect your Millenn-ium Candle, a gift from local Christian Churches to mark the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus at:
The Parish Church's Christmas Fayre (St. Nicholas Fayre) on Saturday 4th December from 11.00am to 2.00pm.
The end of term infants' show at Lyminge Primary School at 3.00pm on Friday 10th December.
Methodist and Parish Churches on Saturdays 11th and 18th December from 9.00am to 12noon.

LIGHT & SOUND SHOW

An amazing and magical light and sound show will be shown at 7.00pm, 10.00pm and 00.30am at the Village Hall.  This has been conceived and devised by Adrian Willcox and Steve Thomas and promises to be out of this world!  Images will be projected around the hall as music is played.  The entrance is free and the show will be enjoyed by all ages.

PARTY TIME AT THE VILLAGE HALL!
Come along at any time throughout the evening - stay for just half an hour, take in the light and sound show, come along after the procession, party until the small hours - it's up to you!  MUSIC, DANCING, BAR.  Entrance FREE.

TIMETABLE
7.00pm - 1st Light and Sound Show
10.00pm - 2nd Light and Sound Show
10.45pm - EVERYONE - young and old, is invited to put on a warm coat, and join your friends and neighbours for a lantern procession around the village.  Bring your lanterns to the Scout Hut (or collect them there) for a prompt start at 10.45pm.  The planned route is:
 Scout Hut along High Street
Along Mayfield Road (via the Well)
 Along Station Road
 Along Canterbury Road to
 Silverlands Road
 Left into Palm Tree Way
Loop into Nailbourne Court and out again
 Continue up Palm Tree Way
 Left into Woodland Road
Back down the High Street to the Church
(n.b. A single route, rather than three converging was agreed to be more practical)

11.30pm - Those who do not wish to attend the Church Service may "peel off" and go to the Village Hall, or the Coach and Horses, or home.

11.40pm - The Watchnight Service will be held in the Parish Church

Midnight - One big rocket will be launched and the church bells will ring.  When the bells finish there will be a short, but magnificent burst of fireworks.  Churchgoers will be able to process along a marked pathway between the Church and the Village Hall to join others to see the fireworks and specially created fire-sculptures.

12.30am - 3rd Light and Sound Show

PLEASE NOTE...

  1. All Millennium events have been fully insured
  2. Please try to wear light coloured clothing and/or reflective tabards or armbands if you are out after dark.
  3. Full safety instructions will be given to everyone carrying a lantern.
  4. The procession will be fully marshalled (but we could do with more volunteers please!)
  5. A car will follow in the rear of the procession and will be available for the foot-sore and weary!
  6. First aid coverage is by volunteers who have up-to-date certificates and who will be wearing a button badge (again, we could do with more volunteers - hopefully you won't have to do anything all evening apart from wear a badge).
  7. Please ensure all pets are safe and secure indoors - there will be lots of noise on the night.
  8. More information from Liz Coleman on 863197.

Notices

The Salvation Army Recycling BANK
(people put rubbish in bins and treasures in banks!)

Did you know that the Salvation Army recycling bank is emptied every Wednesday morning - and is always nearly full?  Ross, who empties the bank, wishes to thank everyone very much for all the contributions.

The contents of the bin are sent to their new £1M plant at Wellingborough where everything is sorted.  Wearable items are sent all over the world, for instance Kosova or Africa, where, ever mindful of the need to maintain a person's dignity, small charges are made for these clothes.  The workers in the needy areas will send a list of requirements which are then met from the UK supplies and packed into containers for despatch.  Any piece of textile which is past its best is also used; industrial cleaning rags can be created, or those pieces made of natural fibres are sent for breaking down and re-spinning into mixed yarns for "as new" clothing.  Please make sure that items are washed before putting them in the bin.

Not only does the Salvation Army recycle textiles, but old shoes with wear in them will be sent with the clothing containers.

On a final note, please leave space for Ross to park his van and open the bin on Wednesday morning.  Generally cones are left out to indicate that the nearest parking space should not be used, but sometimes they get moved.

Safe Access to the Superhighway

Children are so computer literate that it is difficult to keep up with them sometimes.  If the Internet is used responsibly it is a very exciting tool, but every concerned parent needs to protect their children from undesirable sites.  Kent County Council have a Superhighway Information Pack available for school use, but available from your local school for private use.  To monitor your child's use of the Internet you should not put the computer in the child's bedroom for him/her to play on his/her own, but position it such that you can keep and eye on what is on the screen.  Never allow your child to give out the home or school address over the Internet.  Invest in software which monitors the sites your children may try, but beware - children are exchanging inform-ation as to how to access unsuitable sites.

Lyminge Pre-school Playgroup

A safe and welcoming place for your child to play, learn and make friends, supervised by trained and experienced staff.  The Playgroup aims to help children make a smooth transition to school.  Sessions are 9.00am - 12.00pm, term-time weekdays, at Lyminge Village Hall and cost £4.00 (four-year olds receive Government funding to cover the cost).  Children can start at 21/2 years old.  The Playgroup has to meet standards set by KCC Social Services and OFSTED, and is a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance.  More information from Lynn Hussey on 862831.

Lyminge Babies and Toddlers

We meet every Tuesday during school term time at the Methodist Church Hall, Church Road, Lyminge.  Come along any time between 9.00am and 11.30am.
ALL BABIES, TODDLERS AND CARERS WELCOME FOR PLAY AND COFFEE
£1.20 a session (1st session free)

Elham Valley Lions

Lion Santa and his helpers will soon be visiting villages to collect for the needy and elderly in the area during the Christmas period.  The money raised with your help will be used to bring a little happiness into the loves of those who don't have much to look forward to at Christmas.

Last year over £2,400 was raised and the Lions were able to provide food parcels, fuel vouchers, electricity stamps and cards to many local people.  Please give generously and help us to make this Christmas special for someone in the Elham Valley.  Locally, the Lions float will be in Etchinghill and Postling on Tuesday 5th December from 5.30pm, Lyminge on Sunday 19th December from 4.30pm and Elham on Thursday 23rd December from 7.30pm.

Elham Valley Lions have recently donated £1,300 to the 'Children's Society' and £1,500 to 'Footprints' Kent Kids Miles for Smiles in Canterbury.

Car Vandalism and Damage

During the late spring our car was seriously vandalised whilst parked over night in the village car park to the left of the Post Office.  The incident was reported to the Police.  We had our suspicions as to the culprits and shortly afterwards they were reliably confirmed.  However, we decided not to pursue the matter as we had promised not to divulge the identity of the informant.  The repairs and re-spray cost us £1,800.04.

Having had this work done, and within a matter of a few days, between the hours of 5.30pm on the 19th October and 9.00am on the 20th October, while our car was parked opposite our house in Station Road, someone kindly hit our newly sprayed vehicle and failed to report the damage.  This is going to cost a further £250.00 to repair.

We feel sure that someone must know who did this, or perhaps whoever accidentally did the damage would contact us so that we might exchange details of our insurance companies in the usual way.  Our telephone number is 862357.
Paul and June Baker.

Volunteers needed for the millennium toad migration project

Are you interested in conserving the wild life of the Elham Valley and being part of a local conservation effort that will make a real difference?

The Elham Valley supports a common toad colony in Ashley Wood near the Beachborough roundabout that uses the Beachborough ponds to spawn each spring.  To achieve their instinctive goal they have to cross the hazardous (former) B2065.  For many this is certain death, for the increasing use of this road by local commuters is proving to be the death knell of the colony.

What can you do?  Please volunteer to help in a project to protect the colony from further devastation and almost certain extinction.  This year a concerted effort to halt the carnage is being launched by local conservationists, the While Cliffs Countryside Project and the Shepway District Council.

For the project to be totally successful we require volunteers on Sunday 6 February 2000 and throughout the migration in either February or March.  If you want to be part of this unique project never before attempted in Kent, or require further information, then please contact Dave Huggins on 863203 at Ash Cottage, 1 The Orchids, Etchinghill.

Lyminge Handbells Appeal Update

The handbell ringers are cont inuing to try and raise £3,000 to refurbish the handbells.  Unfortunately we are unlikely to achieve this by the new millennium, as originally hoped, but will continue fund-raising throughout next year.  We are very grateful for donations already received.

The handbells are almost unringable at the moment, due to five requiring recasting and the straps on all the bells needing to be replaced.  (Many other adjustments are also required.)  However, we will be ringing over this Christmas period, so if the bells sound a little 'rough' at times, please bear with us.  Hopefully next Christmas you will enjoy the sound of a superb set of bells.

If anyone is interested in making a donation, of any size, cheques should be made payable to "The Lyminge Handbells Appeal" and sent to the treasurer, Richard Weldon, at 16 Pentvale Close, Folkestone, Kent CT19 5LQ.  Any further information can be obtained from Liz McNaughton, the secretary, on 863983.  Donations over £25 will be included on a commemorative plaque to be erected somewhere in the village.  Anyone donating £150 or over can have a name engraved on one of the bells.  For donations over £50 the ringers would be happy to perform at an event of your choice.

When we have realised our target and had the bells refurbished, we will be very happy to welcome new members, of any age, to our team.

Reports

Age Concern, Elham Rural

Library Display

Thanks to the Folkestone and District Family History Society for the display in the library during November.  It provoked a lot of interest and much reminiscing from the older villagers of Lyminge and Elham.

Sponsored Bike Ride

The sponsored bike ride to support the Friends of Kent Churches took place this year on Saturday 11 September.  About 20 of us from Lyminge took to our machines on a glorious sunny day, and proceeded to pedal around remote parts of the surrounding area in search of churches to visit.  Well done those who took part or who assisted in other ways.  Thanks especially to our sponsors, who helped us to raise a magnificent total of £507.
Lawrence Lees.

Trees for the Millennium

On Saturday 13 November over 100 tiny trees were planted in a plot specially prepared behind the library.  Many thanks to Peter Taylor, Bert Fagg, Ken Guyett and Richard Carr who, with just a little arm-twisting and the promise of tea and chocolate biscuits, stepped in at the eleventh hour to clear and dig the ground.

Thanks also to Diana and Rob Allen, Lyminge Parish Tree Wardens, who ensured that the little trees got off to a good start in their nursery bed, and to everyone, particularly the children, who helped.  Thank you to Janet Turner, who suggested the plot behind the Library as a nursery bed, and arranged with the Library Department that this could be done.

Local children, who planted their tree seeds last year, have grown all the little trees from seeds from native stock.  Thank you too, to Mr. Jones and the staff at Lyminge School for all the help and encouragement they gave the children.  When the trees have grown sufficiently they will be planted in various places around the Parish, and will be a lasting 'souvenir' of the millennium.

Royal British Legion - Elham Valley Branch
1999 Poppy Appeal

We have had yet another successful year.  The total amount donated to the appeal is £3,431.68, which includes; box collections, donations, the combined church collection, wreaths and the Branch donation, which included the proceeds from our summer lunch (back by popular demand on July 25 2000).  The Annual Dinner will be held on April 15 2000.  Both are pleasant social occasions and are another opportunity to support the Poppy Appeal.

However, despite most of the box collections showing a considerable increase over the last year, we are still down by £100.  This is directly as a result of a lack of volunteers in Etchinghill.  Our only collector there was Mrs. Hogarth of St. Mary's Drive, to whom we are most grateful.

Each year loyal collectors have to step down for various reasons, and it is very hard to replace them.  If you could spare a little time to help with the collection, not just in Etchinghill, but also Rhodes Minnis and Lyminge, it would be greatly appreciated.  A reminder will be placed in next September's Newsletter!

Many thanks to everyone who helped in any way at all towards our total of £3,431.68.  The valley residents are always very generous.

Pat Neumark, Honorary Poppy Organiser (840634).

Gardening

Gardening Tips for December

If you have a propagator, now is the time to plant pelargonium seeds.  However, an easier and less risky way is to send off an order for plugs.  Forty plugs can be bought for the price of a couple of packets of seeds.
Pot up lilies for planting out in the spring, or they can be left to flower in the pots.  A succession planted between now and April will give flowers until the autumn.

Once deciduous trees have lost their leaves they can be pruned to shape.

Plant blackberry canes and prune old ones.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards.  We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating.  So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again!  Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market.  Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
