tree HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO
ALL OUR READERS!

FATHER CHRISTMAS TO VISIT LYMINGE ON WEDNESDAY 23 DECEMBER,
BY INVITATION OF THE LYMINGE ASSOCIATION

Do you want to thank a friend or neighbour, surprise a child or two, or start the festive fun a day or two early? Let Father Christmas deliver your present IN PERSON to the door! From about 5.00pm onwards on the night of Wednesday 23 December, Father Christmas and all his gnomes and helpers will be touring the streets delivering presents you have provided. All you have to do is wrap and clearly label (the label has to be read by torchlight!) your presents and take them to one of the collecting points listed below. The charge is 60p per address, no matter how many parcels you send to that one address. While we cannot promise to deliver at a particular time, if you want parcels delivering to small children who need to go to bed early, please give Linda (01303-862699) a ring and she will have a word with Rudolph about the route.
DON'T FORGET THAT SANTA DELIVERS TO CHILDREN OF ALL AGES, NOT JUST THE LITTLE ONES!!

Lyminge Association News

At the first meeting of the new committee, the following officers were elected: Chairman - Debbie Marsh, Minute Secretary - Mary Bennett, General Secretary - Paul Marsh, Treasurer - Sheila Wood, Liaison and P.R. Officers - Mike Foxon and Frances Nash and Editor - Liz Coleman.

Apart from the arrangements for the Father Christmas visit, it was agreed that we should re-examine the aims and objectives of the Association. A major aspect of the Lyminge Association's aims has always been to assist all the clubs, societies and associations in the Parish. Despite items in previous Newsletters, it was felt that organisations had not been aware of this. One of the first tasks of the Liaison officers will be to contact organisations and to let them know how the Lyminge Association may be of assistance. A by-product of this activity will be that the list of organisations will be updated. This list, of nearly 50 organisations, is usually held in the Library, for reference by anyone (but particularly newcomers) to see if their own hobbies and interests are covered by a group in the Parish.

The new committee also recognised that there aren't many people out there that want to serve on committees - but there are lots of people who (if one did but ask) would be happy to help out when a function was planned. We are very keen to create a catalogue of people who would volunteer their time, if they were available on the day, to help with village events. IF YOU CAN HELP, PLEASE COMPLETE THE FORM IN THE NOTICES SECTION. The completion of the form doesn't commit you to anything, just that if someone asked, you may be available to help

The Millennium Committee

The Millennium Committee is currently hard at work looking for funds to finance the exciting programme of events and items planned for the year 2000. We are seeking grants from the Government's Millennium Fund, but are also hoping to generate finance locally. To that end we have contacted local firms for sponsorship and are delighted that A.J. Barnes (the local Veterinary Surgeon), Richards and Co. (Chartered Accountants) and Lyminge Post Office have generously donated funds already. We are also planning a Grand Draw, to be drawn at midsummer 1999 - 90 letters have been sent (so far) to local (and some further flung) tourist attractions and similar organisations asking for raffle prizes. We should be delighted to receive promises of other raffle prizes or sponsorship - please contact either Honor Hunt-Cooke on 862928 or Liz Coleman (863197).

Community Policing

I'd like to take this time to introduce myself to you all - I am Sam Wigley, Special Constable appointed to your area. I am sure we would all like to wish Richard Lester all the best in his new posting.
Although we no longer have Richard with us, the Police Surgery at Lyminge Library will continue as previously, Mondays 3.00pm - 4.00pm and Thursdays 6.00pm - 7.00pm. There were four crimes in Lyminge during the month of October. There will be a drink/drive campaign on the run up to Christmas and the New Year which will involve random stop check, so please remember to leave your car keys at home if you are going to be helping with the Christmas SPIRITS!!

Elham Valley Lions Santa Float Programme 1998

Lion Santa and his helpers will soon be visiting your village to collect for the needy in the area during the Christmas period. The money we raise will be used to bring a little happiness into the lives of those who don't have much to look forward to at Christmas. Last year we raised over £2,000 and were able to give parcels, fuel vouchers and cards to over 100 people in the area.

Please give generously and help us to make this Christmas special for someone in your area.

Playgroup Predicament!

Several posts have recently been created and urgently need filling at Lyminge Pre-School Playgroup. We run our sessions for 21/2 - 41/2year olds at Lyminge Village Hall, Monday to Friday, from 9.00am till 12 noon. The jobs are as follows:

1. 1 hour per morning 9.00am - 10.00am, for normal playgroup duties. Paid.

2. Full morning session on Wednesdays 8.45am till 12.15pm. Initially for the duration of the Spring Term only (January to April). Paid.

3. We are also in desperate need of voluntary help at all times during our sessions. If you have any time that you could share with our children, helping with reading, playing and other activities, we would be very grateful to hear from you. Previous volunteers have found this a very rewarding experience!

If you would like more information on these posts, please call Lynn Hussey (Playgroup Leader) on 862831 or Pam Wooding (Chairman, Playgroup Management Committee) on 863283.

Thomlinson

Editor's Note: I received this item via Internet. If anyone wants to reply and hasn't got access to Internet, let me know (863197). Liz Coleman.

I would be interested in knowing if anyone remembers back to the years between W.W.I and W.W.II. My mother and her family lived in Lyminge and my Grandmother ran a tea shop in what looked like the center of town. The family name was Thomlinson. My grandmother's name was Edna; my grandfather's name was Edgar and their children Pauline (my mother) and Ednamae. All my life I've heard stories about primroses and wonderful things about Lyminge. It was obviously a happy time for the Thomlinson family. I can be reached on the net at:
enoe@hotmail.com

I would really appreciate any memories anyone has. Thank you. Regards Edna Noe.

Church Bike Ride 1998

A total of £488 was raised as a result of the village cyclists' efforts this year. Thanks to all who took part, and of course, to the sponsors. L.L.

Lyminge Gardeners' Society

At the AGM on 17th November, the Chairman was able to report on a very successful year; with membership numbers up, good attendances at the monthly meetings and an increase of 50% on the entries for the summer show. Doug Furminger agreed to stay on as Chairman and Treasurer, and Janet Turner as Secretary. David Godden stood down from the committee and his expertise will be missed, particularly with regard to the shows. We looked forward to an equally successful year for 1999. Thanks must go to the Editor for being so generous with the space given to the Society in the Newsletter. The publicity has certainly helped.

Lyminge W.I.

The month of November meant that it was time for our AGM. Mrs. Muriel Childs is our President for another year. The competition was for a Christmas cracker, which was won by Mrs. Childs with Mrs. Norton second and joint third Mrs. Payne and Mrs. Goldup.

Parish Paths Partnership

Footpath HE 106 Ottinge Bridge

On a lovely sunny morning, a small working party consisting of Bert Price (Lyminge), Brian Cottenham (Elham) and led by Dan Tuson (PROW Officer from KCC) and myself (as chief flint-gatherer and coffee-provider) installed new oak steps and hand rails on this increasingly dangerous section of the Elham Valley Way. It is also planned to place railway sleepers to lengthen the wooden bridge over the Nailbourne, making the whole route from North Lyminge to Elham much safer and drier! As this section is the last link between the Parishes, we hope that not only the EVW walkers, but residents from both Elham and Lyminge can walk in safety to visit friends in each village.
Pat Neumark (Elham PPP).

Royal British Legion - Elham Valley Poppy Appeal

Your generous donations to the 1998 Appeal have raised; in the collecting boxes - £1944.49, church collections and wreath donations - £202.66, and our branch donation - £607.55. The coffee morning, despite being held on a very wet and miserable day, was well attended, producing £245.30, giving a grand total of £3,000.

Two new collectors answered my appeal for help in the Lyminge Newsletter. One of whom braved the torrential rain on the first Saturday collections started, collecting a large amount of money as everyone else stayed indoors. He returned the pulped cardboard box to me as proof!

Thank you to all the collectors who gave their time so freely - all busy people at the best of times; to the business community who kindly agreed to act as dropping off and picking up points for boxes; to the Churches for donating their collection to the Poppy Appeal, and of course, everyone who wore their Poppy with pride. Thank you most sincerely.
Pat Neumark, Honorary Poppy Appeal Organiser.
