THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER

December 2004

Produced by
The Lyminge Association

Jean, I and The Lyminge Association Committee wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year - we hope you get everything in your dreams and more mince pies than you could possibly dream of. Do all the things you're not supposed to do and, most of all, enjoy doing them.
Finally, we would also like to dedicate this edition of the Newsletter to all our delivers. These volunteers brave all the elements and, somehow, us saying thank you seems insufficient. But thank you!

Copy deadline for next month's edition is Thursday the 16th December.

  • ADVERTISING: Call Jean Howard on 862488 or email in word.doc format jean.howard1@btinternet.com  Money must be received before Advert can appear in this newsletter.
  • ARTICLES & LETTERS Call Graham Caldow on 862907 or email in word.doc format gcaldow@hotmail.com

Father Christmas
about Lyminge

The Lyminge Association has arranged for Santa to visit early and deliver presents. If you would like him to visit your home on the evening of Wednesday 22nd December, please clearly address your parcels and deliver them to Stennings, during their opening hours, or Sunny Cottage (behind the Lyminge Coffee Shop) in the evenings. Parcels should be at a collecting point by 5.00pm on 21st December. If you wish Father Christmas to visit early for small children please advise us when delivering your parcels. A small charge of 80p will be made and passed on to charitable causes via grants given by The Lyminge Association.

Still No Skate Park
By Mrs Eileen Hall

I am sure that most readers will know how concerned I am about the kids who live in our village. They are our future. But half the time they are bored and have nothing to do. If they are too old for the playground and they are too young for the bright lights of Folkestone, they just mooch about.
I talked to a bunch of them and found out that what they really wanted was a skate park, so I helped them raise funds and get publicity. We even got Michael Howard behind the project.
We've done really well - we've raised more than £1,500 - and we want to spend it. People keep putting barriers in our way. There's a lot of NIMBYs about. I need Lyminge's help now. We need to provide a facility for our kids, perhaps not a whole skate park, but something that starts it off. I would really welcome help and support.
I am also worried when I hear about "Curfew Orders" being put in place in the larger towns near us. Does that mean that the kids who are cleared off the town streets will come finding trouble in our village? The last thing I want to hear is that there's been damage or thieving which is then blamed on our kids, when outsiders are at fault. If you see evidence of this, I hope that you will inform the Police or the Community Warden.
If anyone wants to contact me about this, please drop me a line via the Newsletter box in the Library.

Poem of the Month

 Outside

A butterfly with elegant wings, Listens as a magpie sings, A quiet bee buzzes along,
And hears a quiet robin's song,

Leaves whispering up so high,
White clouds float up in the sky,
Standing tall, the mighty trees,
Are whispering in the chilly breeze.

Eddie Barnes (Yr6)

A Welcome to the New Editor
- Well sort of!

I'm please to announce that we have another editor: Jean Howard. Jean has been working very hard on the Newsletter for the better part of 18 months and has now very kindly volunteered to become co-editor. She will edit the Dates for the Diary, Notices & Reports and Adverts sections. Anyone wishing to contribute anything to these sections should contact her on 862488 or email
jean.howard1@btinternet.com  - attachments must be in word.doc format only. Money must be received before Adverts/Notices can appear if they are submitted via email.
Needless to say I am delighted by this outcome, because I will have time for the Articles and Letters. If you have something you feel like sharing with the village, please do! This Newsletter needs your voice! We publish any genuine submission, and can offer help with writing. You can call me on 862907 to discuss submissions or submit them directly to me gcaldow@hotmail.com , regrettably I too can only receive word.doc format.

The Bright Lights!

For most of us Christmas decorations are restricted to a few lights on the front window and around the Christmas tree. But some people go just that bit further lighting up not only their own houses but also brightening the spirits of those who happen to drive by. Last year I noticed one house on Station Road, Lyminge, which made me wonder just what makes people go to this much trouble. So this year I knocked on the door of that house and asked! Ken and Chris Laverty's reply was simple "because we like to." What better answer could there be!
If you didn't see the Laverty's house last year, it was the one with a railway theme. Ken used to work for the railways, and so it seemed a natural thing to put up. Originally, when they started 7 years ago, the display was a string of lights connected to a wire frame but it's a bit more complicated now. The frame stays up all year and each Christmas Ken adds something new - last year's addition was icicles that appear to be on the railway tracks.
I asked how long it takes to hang all the lights up, how many bulbs there are and how much does it all cost to power the display? I was surprised to learn it only takes a day, if the weather is not too bad. Ken couldn't answer how many bulbs, so he plucked a number of the air out number, 'Hundreds' - sounds close enough. Incredibly all the lights run off one 13 amp socket! So we are talking pennies per day, not pounds.
Ken and Chris's neighbours don't mind with Ken assuring me, The people over the road quite like it because they can see it through their window.'
This year may be the last time you'll be able to see the Laverty's' current display, because they are hoping to upgrade next year - their current crop of lights are getting a bit old. They switch the lights on in the first weekend in December; Ken isn't so keen on Christmas starting in November. So come December take a look as you drive by, look for the new addition and most importantly just enjoy the lights.

Your Letters

Dear Editor: We would like to pass on our congratulations and thanks to all those people involved in organising the Lyminge Bonfire and Firework night. It was the first time we have all visited this event and did not know what to expect. We were very impressed with the whole evening, from the courteous young people who greeted us at the entrance, to all the various stall holders, from soup to Sparkler sellers, to the huge happy crowd of spectators, of all ages, who thoroughly enjoyed the most spectacular fireworks set to music, with a wonderful bonfire lit by a flaming arrow! What a credit to the organisers who must have worked very hard together to make such an enjoyable and above all safe event for so many people. Again thankyou all of you.
The Robertson/Dunk family

Dear Editor: I, like so many other Valley dwellers, are now blessed with Broadband for our IT needs - and I thank goodness for it. But just who is 'Goodness'? Certainly not BT who were so resistant when the idea was first mooted a couple of years. No, I believe 'Goodness' has many faces but is collectively known as Broadband A the Downs. This small group of villagers from Lyminge, Elham, and Sellindge spent huge amounts of time and money fighting for BB and overcame obstacles too numerous to mention. Read all about it on the website
www.broadband4thedowns.co.uk . So, speaking on behalf of all those sad people like me who got excited over BB - Thank you Mike, Andy, Gareth, Roy and Chris for all the Goodness you have spread through the Valley.

Dear Editor: For the second time in two years we find ourselves mourning the loss of another of our much loved cats. 'Zippy' was our much loved pet Cat for three years and was sadly found motionless in the road near our home on Friday 12th November. No doubt he is just another victim of a speeding motorist who thinks Brady Road is a Race Track! Like his brother 'Bungle' who was also killed in Brady Road on December 18th 2002, he was an adorable friendly black moggie just out for a stroll. Cats don't understand the Highway Code. Foolishly they think that the countryside is there to be explored, a safe haven for animals. If the 30 mile per hour speed limit had been adhered to, he would have made it to the other side of the road. So motorists PLEASE THINK, KILL YOUR SPEED NOT OUR CATS!!

LYMINGE PARISH PLAN WEBSITE

December 21st will mark a new phase in the evolution of our community's plan for the future. The Parish Plan Website will be launched and then will be found at www.lymingeparishplan.org.uk. It will feature the progress so far with pages about the photographic project, the three wishes campaign and the road shows (which will include details about the past, present and future of the parish).
December 21st is also the Winter Solstice and the feast day of St Thomas, the questioning apostle, which both suggest a new stage in the preparation of the plan. In the New Year a questionnaire will be given to all households in the parish. We do hope you will complete yours when it arrives. For our community your answers will be as important as the ten yearly national censuses. If you feel that there are important questions that you would like to be considered by the Lyminge Parish Plan Group for inclusion please contact us by email (secretary@lymingeparishplan.org.uk) or Alistair Bailey on 864235.

The Parish Church welcomes everyone to the Services held during the week.
The main service on a Sunday is at 10.30am.
On the first Sunday, 5th December, this is a World of Worship (WOW!) All Age Service with songs, prayers, readings and often a sketch. The accent is on involving everyone in the worship.
On the 12th, 19th and 26th December the 10.30am service is Holy Communion. Coffee and tea are available afterwards.
Other services on a Sunday are Holy Communion at 8am on the 5th December and on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Please note that there will be no Healing Service at 6.30pm on the 12th December, and no Sunday Silence at 6.30pm on the 28th December.
During the week there is a Holy Communion service at 9.30am on a Thursday.

WEDNESDAY SILENCE
Come and find inner peace, stillness and calm from 9.15 to 10pm. There is no music, no words and no interruptions. Light a candle, say a prayer, sit and think – we all need some quiet to let us renew ourselves and allow time for contemplation or meditation.

MOTHER’S UNION – SUNDAY TEAS
On 5th December there will be a tea party for anyone in the village who lives on their own and would like some company. It will be held in Nailbourne Court in Lyminge, in the lounge from 3 – 5pm. If you need a lift, or would like to know more, please contact Vanessa Ashman on 862432.

REPAIRS TO THE CHURCH

We have raised enough money!

In summer 2003, the church set out to raise the £26,000 needed to do the urgent repairs. This was mostly to prevent any further deterioration of the stonework by preventing water seeping in. It also involves repairing some of the lead sheeting, removing vegetation high up on the walls, and wood preservation. The task was huge and the support of the village, who on many occasions have voiced their support for the church building and all it means to them, was essential. At the same time, grant applications were made to tap into the resources of specialist charitable organisations.
By the end of October, with all the Gift Day donations counted, we had reached our total! Thank you to everyone who responded to the Gift Day appeal and supported St Nicholas’ Fair last year - your support has been fantastic! This is how we raised the money:
Grants received or pending:             £13,650
Gift Day donations 2003 and 2004:  £10,334
St Nicholas’ Fair 2003:                   £ 2,598
TOTAL:                                        £26,582
You will see that the scaffolding is already in place and we expect the work to take between 3 and 4 weeks. We will continue to raise money for the building, as there will be more work to do in 2006 when the next inspection takes place. Please support St Nicholas’ Fair on December 4th in the Village Hall - all proceeds go to the Repair Fund.
This is a great achievement - your help and support is very much appreciated.
John Stammers ,Jenny Tomlinson [Churchwardens]
We wish all readers a very Happy Christmas!

Etchinghill W.I
The meeting on 16m November was a well attended A.G.M.. Owing to the number of ladies willing to serve on the committee a ballot was held. Barbara Syrett was unanimously elected to stand as President for another year. We held the group meeting in October. Our guest speaker was unable to come so it was requested that each Institute entertain us. This proved to be hilarious, amusing and entertaining. A most enjoyable afternoon was rounded off by a lovely tea.
Our competitions are very popular. The member with the most points this year was Daphne Melrose, who will be presented with the cup at our next meeting.
We meet every third Tuesday at 2.30pm in Etchinghill Village Hall. We extend a warm welcome to any ladies wishing to come along. The next meeting is our Christmas Meeting where we will be entertained by Ron Kenny. The competition is for a decorated Christmas Cracker.

At the recent A.G.M. Peter Taylor was re-elected Chairman, Pearl Furmtnger Vice Chairman and Chris Guyett treasurer Since Janet Turner, our secretary, moved away, Chris has been acting secretary, although she and Janet had already organised the programme for 2005. It was difficult to find a new secretary but three people offered to share the position.
We have had a successful year and managed to beat Newington Gardeners in the inter-club competition. AH our meetings have been well supported with approximately 32 people attended each event. We have a break over the next few months until our first meeting next year on Tuesday 22nd March. Watch this space!

ETCHINGHILL UPDATE
Thanks to all who came along to, and all who helped to arrange, our Halloween quiz Night, especially Claire Wilcoxon who did us proud with the "bangers & mash" and most of the decorations for the Hall. We had a really enjoyable evening and a bonus of raising over £200 towards Association funds.
Talking of funds - just a reminder that annual subscriptions are due. We would be really grateful for a token £1 per household, which can be dropped in either to Wendy at Stourbrook, Canterbury Road; David, 16 St Mary's Drive, or Judith, West Ho, Westfield Lane. Thank you
The Etchinghill website is now live - with our grateful thanks to Gareth of Red Dragon Web Design, please see
