THE LYMINGE
NEWSLETTER
December 2002
Produced by
The Lyminge Association
FATHER
CHRISTMAS COMES TO LYMINGE!
We
are pleased to announce that plans are underway to invite Father Christmas
to make an early visit to our Parish once more! He has agreed to
visit on Sunday 22 December, with a 4.30pm start. If you
would like to arrange for him to call on your friends and family, all you
have to do is wrap your presents for delivery, label them clearly (the
gnomes need to read the labels in the dark!) and then deliver them to
either Stennings Insurance in Station Road, the Coach and Horses, or Liz
Coleman at Sunny Cottage, Canterbury Road (behind the Newsagents). Parcels
MUST be delivered to one of these points by Saturday 21 December. You
can send as many parcels as you like to one address at 80p per address.
We will do our best to accommodate small children’s bedtimes – please
let us know. Please also give clear instructions if the house is not
easy to find (especially in the dark!). Any queries, please ring Liz
on 863197 or Linda on 862699. Don’t forget – Father Christmas
delivers to grown-ups too!!
MESSAGE TO ALL CONTRIBUTORS TO
THE NEWSLETTER
Owing to increased costs of production, the costs for all
entries in the Lyminge Newsletter are to be increased. The Lyminge
Association Committee will finalise the pricing structure at the next
meeting. This will affect all entries from the April issue onwards.
The new costs will be advertised in the January, February and March
issues.

businesses over
Christmas and the New Year can be found online here
News from the Parish Council
The Parish Council is delighted that a
project to mark the Queen’s Golden Jubilee has come to fruition. The
Council decided to create a floral display at the entrance to Lyminge, by
the New Lyminge Surgery, and will be purchasing a horse trough planter,
which will be planted with Spring flowers and then Summer plants later
next year.
The project has involved help and support
from a variety of quarters, for which the Parish Council is very grateful.
So, many thanks to the Lyminge Gardeners’ Society, who organised the
planting of around 3000 bulbs. Thanks also to Neil Mullins, who cut the
bank ready for the bulbs, and to Alan White who dug the holes for the
bulbs with his mini excavator.
The Parish Council hopes that the display
will be a pleasing improvement to our environment, and an attractive
reminder of the Jubilee of 2002.
Lyminge
Village Hall - built for us all to use
Current news
We have been helped by the people doing Community Service who
have cleared the shrubbery and weeded around the car park. We are hoping
that the new more comfortable chairs will be available for ‘Arabian
Nights’ along with the Dramatic Society’s new tiered seating (both
purchased with the £14,000 Community Fund grant).
Lyminge Fireworks Night 2002.
Many thanks to all the members and other friends who gave up their time to
make this such an enjoyable (including a big thanks to Dennis Huntley, who
slipped whilst setting up and spent the display in Casualty). There
are too many of you to name individually, but without your hard work this
regular fundraising event would not take place. Thanks also to the
crowds who turned out to enjoy a 25 minute, £600 display. The event
raised £1650 and this does allow us to replace items such as the main
hall heating. If there are any serious suggestions that anyone
would like to make on the running of the evening, please contact wither
Mike Foxon (862073) or Dave Hunt-Cooke (862928)
Village Hall Use and Development
There was a most encouraging response to our survey carried in a
recent Newsletter, with a wide variety of views and ideas put forward. The
Management Committee was also delighted that two very well qualified
people responded to our plea for help by offering to develop design
concepts for an upgraded building. They subsequently presented us with a
professional bound set of drawings and narrative. Even better they offered
to “hold our hands” during the development process!
Consultation with regular users will commence shortly and a presentation
of outline ideas will be held so that everyone may have an input. As a
first step there has been an approach to the Parish Council, from whom we
anticipate maximum support and encouragement.
It is envisaged that the improvements to the hall will be implemented over
a period of some two to three years. Fundraising will require major
efforts by all concerned, with applications being made to the main sources
of finance for this type of project.
If you are inspired and are able to lend your skills and perhaps some time
to this exciting undertaking please contact Peter Peacock on 862535 or
email Crafter342@aol.com
External Works
Finally, thanks to Tessa Bedwell (our Community Warden) for obtaining
the help of the community service team to start clearing around the hall
car park and approach.

A
message from Tessa, Rural Community Warden
With Christmas approaching and some budgets
being tight, please maintain your vigilance over the festive period - that
bargain may well turn out to cost so much more. In recent months a mobile
phone scam has been unearthed offering free holidays and gifts, especially
to Orange network users. I would recommend that you don’t reply as the
cost of replying is likely to be very expensive. Please just ignore and
delete this type of message.
With the increasing bad weather over the winter months please be aware
that unscrupulous trades people use this as an ideal time to call on
unsuspecting households. Never be afraid to say “No!” to a cold caller
and never let them into your house. If you do want work doing, it is
advisable to get at least three individual quotes from different
companies. Any good and reputable trade’s person will always agree to
come back another day and quote in writing for work to be done.
If you have any doubts over callers to your home, never let them in and
beware of the following:
Cash only, we don’t take cheques
Only £200 for the whole drive
We were working in the neighbourhood
Bullying and intimidation
Overpriced work done badly
You have a choice
Professional traders do not trade in
the style of a COWBOY!
European Environmental Controls – EEC.
This company is currently operating in the Ashford Rural area.
This security company is not operating illegally, but they have adopted
“hard sell” techniques and charge very high prices. It is
believed that they are using the Fire Brigade strikes to scare people into
buying expensive fire alarm systems. Be very firm with them if you do not
want their products.
Duster Sellers. They have been
operating in Whitfield and Cheriton. Again, they may not be doing
anything illegal, but Tessa would like to be told where they are working,
so please let her know if they call at your door.
The
Consequences of Fireworks
Editor’s Note:
Having two cats in our family, I am well aware how terrifying the
“season” of fireworks “night” is and we generally find them
wide-eyed under a bed. They are fairly laid-back, however, and are
soon soothed again. But we’re lucky, many animals are terrified;
some need sedation and others take a long time before they settle again.
Despite my plea in the last Newsletter that neighbours inform one another
if they were going to have a private fireworks party, I was saddened to
receive the following letters:
From Rob Gibson:
“It's Sunday night (3 Nov) and our dog is once again cowering under
the table. He really is a pathetic sight, panting (his tongue is blue),
shaking and eyes wide. Why do we have to have fireworks every night
for a week? We expect them on the 5th, and maybe on the Saturday nearest,
and can cope with this by sedating our dog to avoid his becoming so upset.
What we can't do is sedate him every night for five nights in a row.
So far we've had fireworks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. We will
have them again on Tuesday and on several more nights yet - not to mention
the ad hoc bangs we get for a week before and after. Now I don't
want to spoil anyone's fun (I do enjoy fireworks), but why can't we limit
our fireworks to the night itself, and perhaps the nearest Saturday?
Do other pet owners, and perhaps those with livestock and horses, share my
concerns?”
From Margaret Todd, MBE, Lord Whisky
Sanctuary:
“I wonder if the people who had a firework display in the field next
to our Sanctuary even thought about the distress it might cause to our
animals, or did they even care? - let alone the exhausting evening
we had running from field to field to calm our animals – wild horses
saved from destruction many years ago, elderly horses in their twilight
years – sheep petrified. Between this happening we were answering
‘phone calls about lost animals due to being spooked by fireworks,
taking in dogs that had run away terrified. Is it not time that
these fireworks are banned from these thoughtless people who have no
consideration whatever for others? We enjoy fireworks too, but the
time has come for licensed, organised firework parties on one day, for
next year please.”
Letter
to the Editor
From: Tony Smith, Park View Farm, Green Lane, Rhodes Minnis
“I should like to use the Lyminge Newsletter to remind dog owners of
the importance of keeping their dogs under control, particularly when
sheep and other livestock are around. Last Saturday morning a dog
ran away from its owner whilst being walked in West Wood, jumped our stock
fence and killed one of our pedigree sheep and was only prevented from
seriously injuring a second sheep by the prompt action of our neighbours
(our grateful thanks to Christine and Alistair of Mariners Farm for coming
to our aid).
“The dog was caught and held whilst the Police were called. The
owner was traced and was suitably apologetic and had the very
uncomfortable and embarrassing experience of explaining themselves to the
Police. So let’s consider for a moment the consequences of
the owner’s inattention. I lost a valuable animal which will be
difficult and time- consuming to replace, the owner ran the risk of having
their own much-loved pet destroyed, paying compensation and the
possibility of a court appearance – not worth it is it?”

Remember those mystical tales of the Arabian Nights from your
childhood -the tales of Sinbad and Ali Baba? We will be
recreating the magic of these stories, and several others, when
our production of “Arabian Nights” takes the stage this month.
The stories, handed down through generations of Persian and
Arabian folklore, are told with the help of music, puppets and
plenty of action. The production runs from Wednesday 4th
December to Saturday 7th December at Lyminge
Village Hall. Evening performances commence at 7.45pm and
there will be a matinée on Saturday at 4pm. Senior Citizens are
welcome free of charge to the dress rehearsal on Tuesday 3rd December
at 7.45pm.
This exciting new production will be enhanced further as the
Society has purchased tiered staging to enable them to create
raised seating on different levels in the hall, so providing much
improved viewing facilities for their audiences. The Society was
fortunate to receive a generous grant from the Community Fund,
South East Office for this project.
Tickets are on sale at Haxton’s Estate Agents in Lyminge, priced
£5-00 adults and £2-50 for children.

Lyminge School
Millennium Tree Project
To celebrate the Millennium, children from Lyminge Primary
school collected and grew acorns, horse chestnuts and other tree
seeds. They planted the resulting tree seedlings behind
Lyminge Library, where they were left to grow. Now the
seedlings are of a suitable size to be moved and an excellent site
has kindly been offered locally where they will be planted during
this winter. Hopefully here they will thrive and in years to
come, grow into beautiful mature trees enhancing our countryside
and providing important habitat for wildlife. Many thanks go
to the children of Lyminge Primary School (past and present) for
their involvement in this project.
Lyminge
Babies’ and Toddlers’ Group
Are you a new parent, or have you recently moved into the
area? If you want to meet other parents/carers who have
young babies and children in the village or surrounding area, then
come along to one of our meetings. We meet every Tuesday
morning from 9.30am – 11.30am during term time at the Methodist
Church Hall (opposite Lyminge Primary School).
Our group provides a chance for adults to have a chat and coffee
with other parents and for the children, we provide a stimulating
environment where the youngsters can play, have fun, and socialise
with others.
The first session is free and then afterwards we charge a small
fee of £1.50 per family each week you come. All funds are
used for the group’s activities, i.e. hire of hall,
refreshments, new toys, craft material etc.
If you want to come and join us, then either just turn up on a
Tuesday, or telephone Rachel (863474) or Yvonne (862765) for
further details.
Lyminge Handbells
The bell ringers are happy to play at weekends and evenings at any
local venue or at your home, for a minimum donation of £30, but
please give us plenty of notice. Our selected charity is the
Pilgrims Hospice. If you are interested in hearing us, or
perhaps joining us, please call Stuart Hunnisett on 862530 or Ro
Edmond on 863201.
Lyminge Pre-School
Playgroup
A safe and welcoming place for your child to make friends,
play, learn and make a smooth transition to school, with which we
have a very close liaison. Every session is supervised by
trained and experienced staff. Sessions take place weekdays
during term-time at Lyminge Village Hall, 9.00am – 12 noon (or
1.00pm – the additional hour is optional and a packed lunch
should be provided). The standard session is £5.50 and the
extended session is £7.00. Children may start from 2½
years old.
The Playgroup is a member of the Pre-school Learning Alliance and
meets standards set by KCC and OFSTED. The most recent,
excellent OFSTED report stated, “…In this thriving Playgroup
the children are making good progress towards the Early Learning
Goals. There is a strong partnership with parents and carers
which contributed positively to the children’s good progress.”

Tips for December
A warm task for a cold day – turn the compost

Check for vine weevil in both the garden and the green
