FATHER CHRISTMAS COMES TO LYMINGE!

Don’t forget that Father Christmas has agreed to visit Lyminge on Saturday 22 December, starting at 4.00pm .  If you would like to arrange for him to call on your friends and family, all you have to do is wrap your presents for delivery, label them clearly (the gnomes need to read the labels in the dark!) and then deliver them to either Stennings Insurance in Station Road, the Coach and Horses, or Liz Coleman at Sunny Cottage, Canterbury Road (behind the Newsagents).  Parcels MUST be delivered to one of these points by 6.00pm Thursday 20 December.  You can send as many parcels as you like to one address at 80p per address.  We will do our best to accommodate small children’s bedtimes – please let us know.  Please also give clear instructions if the house is not easy to find (especially in the dark!).  Any queries, please ring Liz on 863197 or Linda on 862699.  We would like to emphasise that this service is not just for sending presents to children – it is the ideal opportunity to send a little gift to your next-door-neighbour etc.

Congratulations!
…to the Village Hall Social Committee for the best ever Bonfire Night celebrations!  Everything seemed to go like clock-work – which is always a sign of good planning.  Even the weather was well-planned and was one of the nicest evenings in a long while.  Especial congratulations to the catering team, who were rushed off their feet and would only have heard the magnificent fireworks display.  After last year when there were some complaints about the noise level of some of the fireworks, there were less of the colossal explosions and more of the “oooh and aaah” variety!  Very well done, team!  If anyone has any comments for improvements for next year, please let Dave Hunt-Cooke know on 862928.

A Plea to Newsletter Contributors
The Lyminge Newsletter is distributed by volunteers free of charge to all the households in the Parish of Lyminge, including Etchinghill, all of Rhodes Minnis, plus Postling.  It is also put in all the “Welcome Packs” for visitors to Sibton Park .  Other non-residents can pick up copies from Roberts’ Shop, the Library, the Coach and Horses and the Chinese Take-Away.  On top of that, the Newsletter goes round the world via the Internet, and information which comes directly from the Newsletter is used by the Tourist Information Centre at Folkestone and the “Village News” section of the local newspaper (which year 6 at Lyminge School organise).  Not bad for the small contribution we ask in payment for entries!  But ALL entries must be paid for – it is the only way we can produce the Newsletter; this includes letters to the Editor, charity inserts etc.  Entries MUST be paid for in advance; while the Editor is happy to accept entries via the email, payment must be received before copy date (the 18th of the month), or they will not be included.  Normally, letters or other copy should be no longer than 200 words.

Letters to the Editor

From: Roger Davenport Esq. (re. proposed internal changes to the Parish Church )
“Having read a series of letters in both the Library and the Newsletter, ranging from sound reasoning to complete flights of fancy, perhaps you will allow me to add a view on the practicality of the Christian faith which Lyminge Church represents.
“The Church building is sanctified for the worship of God through Jesus Christ, for no person comes to the Father except by Him.  God’s House is a gift to this Parish and as such we are custodians for a moment in time, but our responsibility should ensure that the elements of spiritual and practical function are sustained, for our God is one of life; past, present and future.  The prime function of the building is to house and provide a place of worship for followers and seekers of the Lord Jesus Christ and so long as it services this purpose, the worshipping body of followers are responsible for upkeep and maintenance, as apart of their Christian ministry.  The building imposes sizeable overhead costs and the older it becomes, the more its maintenance costs increase.
“However, the main thrust of Christian ministry, as taught by our Saviour, is to those in spiritual and physical need and thus part of our practical worship of God is to commit what blessings He has given to us, in terms of time. Lifestyle and money, back to Him.  These gifts are then used to support Christian ministry in a local, national and international context.  All this activity is, and always should be, supported by prayer.  The Christian faith is rooted in God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, within whom where is perfect unity and love and it follows that the actions of a Christian Church (People, not building) should attempt the same unity and love in spirit and action.
“I am confident that those who plan changes within the Parish Church are aware of their responsibility to God and the community and have, over the past two years, worked to sensitively address many of the concerns that have been expressed.”

From: Derek Smith Esq., Churchwarden (re. proposed internal changes to the Parish Church )
“I write in response to the letter from Mr. Glenn Floyd in last month’s Newsletter, on my own behalf and not as a representative of the PCC.  I was delighted to see that OUR Church is regarded so highly by Mr. Floyd and ‘many villagers’.  I am rather puzzled, however, by the argument that ‘we are all custodians of this integral part of the Parish and as such have a duty to preserve OUR Parish Church for future generations. If WE are all responsible for OUR church, it might be of interest for the village to know how much are OUR financial liabilities.
“It costs, in round figures, £37,000 per year to run OUR Church and its parish, roughly £100 per day.  The raising of this money, used for gas, electricity, insurance, service costs and the Rector’s living, repairs and maintenance etc, is left to the regular congregation and to those who do not attend regularly, but contribute to church funds; this is currently around 100 people.  Those 100 persons have for several years not managed to raise the full amount required, not surprisingly, since many cannot afford to give over three hundred pounds each per year.  Funds have, therefore, had to be withdrawn from the Church’s reserves to cover the shortfall.  If the current trend continues, in about ten to fifteen years from now there will be no money left in the church’s reserves and the declining congregation will not be able to afford to run OUR church any more.  At that stage, either the parish will be combined with several others in a group of about eight or ten parishes, or St. Mary and St. Ethelburga’s will be declared redundant and sold.
“The entire cost of maintaining and running OUR church is, these days, the responsibility of the parish.  The Church Commissioners and the diocese contribute nothing.  So, if WE want to continue to use OUR church and keep it the way we think it should be, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO USE IT MORE OFTEN AND PAY FOR IT. Simply chucking a fiver (if that much) into the collection on Christmas Eve and not contributing again until next year will not be enough.
“The PCC are examining the report of the team which has looked at the future use of the church building, no firm decisions have yet been made.  The whole object is to get more people, preferably young people (under forty?) into the church to ensure that it can continue to function viably.  The PCC are elected annually by the congregation, those 100 loyal folk who raise the money.  If you think you should have more of a say in the building’s future, join the congregation, take part in the election in March, and contribute both financially and physically to the life of the parish.  Please do not just heckle from the sidelines.  If the CHURCH is OURS, so too is THE RESPONSIBILITY for looking after it.”

Editor’s Note:  This subject has now had a thorough airing through the Newsletter, for the time being.  The PCC will be happy to receive further correspondence on the topic via “Lanfranc”, Church Road (between Dumont ’s and the Take-Away).  When the PCC has reached a conclusion, this will be reported in due course.

From: Wendy Priestley (re. dogs/poop-scoops)
“I am very fond of dogs, but I totally fail to see why I should clear up after other people’s – which is what I have to do several times a year when my young son steps in the mess left behind by selfish dog-owners, or when I occasionally do so myself.  The problem is particularly bad at this time of the year when we frequently walk to and from the village after dark.  If people don’t see why they should clear it up themselves, perhaps they can explain why they think others should do it for them?
“Nash Hill, where we live, is actually a private road beyond the railway bridge, which we residents have to fund for ourselves.  Most of us are quite happy for people to walk it, with or without their dogs – but it’s a bit much when people respond to this by using it as a dog toilet.  It’s downright bad manners.
“But the problem is not limited to our road.  I know plenty of dog owners who are just as miffed about this as I am.  It really is time that some people in the village learnt to be more considerate.  And, no, using the verges, playing fields and other people’s front gardens (!) as an alternative to a poop scoop is not really acceptable.
“I recently paid a visit to Ramsgate, not generally renowned for the salubriousness of its environment. There were signs up everywhere, reminding people to clear up after their dogs, and the pavements and paths were a lot cleaner than those in Lyminge!  Perhaps we should have some signs up too?”

Parish Council

Flood prevention
Following the inspection of our watercourses reported last month:
  • Parish Councillors have been clearing the stream through Tayne Field;
  • a number of householders whose properties border the Nailbourne have been working to clear their parts of the stream;
  • Shepway District Council have been clearing ditches and unblocking pipes in Lyminge and Etchinghill.

Here’s hoping that all this hard work leaves us less exposed to flooding this winter.  However, if you live in an area liable to flooding (e.g. Mayfield Road, Station Road, some of North Lyminge) please make sure you let Colin Auld (862607) know if you haven’t ordered your sandbags yet – it’s down to you to let him know if you think you may need them

KCC Act 2001
If you organise sales, e.g. craft sales or boot sales, you need to know about The Kent County Council Act 2001 which comes into force on 1 December 2001, and includes provisions on "occasional sales" (defined as “an event at which goods are exposed for supply or offered to the public by one or more sellers or suppliers in the course of a trade or business”). There are requirements on the person holding the sale and the occupier of the premises where the sale is to be held, which include notifying KCC of any sales, and keeping records of sellers.  If you think any of this applies to you, you should contact Trading Standards on 01843 223380 or visit www.kent.gov.uk/tradingstandards.

School buses
The Parish Council is writing to Kent County Council to reinforce the complaints that have been made about the school bus service.

Next meeting
Your last chance to catch a Parish Council meeting this year is on 17 December, 7.30 pm at Lyminge Village Hall.

School Buses

I had a good response following my note in October’s Newsletter about school buses, and a group of parents met to plan our next steps.  We’re collecting detailed data on the problems children are having with the buses, and have been pursuing the matter with KCC, Stagecoach and our elected representatives.  John Palmer (KCC Councillor) and David Monk (Shepway Councillor) are coming along to our next meeting.  If you’d like to join the campaign, or just add your own experiences, do get in touch.

Elham Valley Lions Christmas Float

Elham Lions Santa and his reindeer float will be out and about in the Shepway villages, bringing the magic of Christmas again to local families and their children all through December.  The Lions will also be collecting for those in need, the elderly, and especially those people on their own this Christmas.  The money raised with your help will be used to bring a little happiness into the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves and for those who have little to look forward to at this time of year.  Last year we raised £3,500.00 and were able to provide elect-ricity vouchers, Christmas hampers, tins of sweets, cards and help with Christmas Parties.  Please give generously; we can also collect your foreign currency to change back into charity sterling.

Reports

Report on the Magical Family Quiz Night

With the help and sponsorship of local companies and individuals, Lyminge Village Hall was transformed into a famous dining room of a famous school on the night of 27th October when families from Lyminge and surrounding villages dressed as witches and wizards for a Magical Family quiz night based on the Harry Potter books. Adrian Willcox and Steve Thomas provided the amazing special effects of light and sound, while Sheila Fernandes, Liz Williamson, Christine Thomas and I decorated the hall. The catering team of Ro Edmunds, Linda Chisnall, Georgina Osborne, Judy Patrick and Honor Hunt-Cooke did a fantastic job of feeding the 100+ ‘pupils’ and Brian Edmunds, Chris & Celia Jeffery, James & Ann Nichols, Mike Chisnall and David Monk were marvellous professors delivering the witchcraft and wizardry questions, which had been complied by Alice Monk. All in all, everyone had a fantastic time and the event raised a staggering £1504 to be split equally between Demelza House and the BBC Children in Need Appeal.

My thanks go out to everyone who supported the evening with such enthusiasm, but especially to those named above and to our sponsors without whose help we could never have raised such a wonderful sum of money for two very deserving causes. What a wonderful village we live in. Thank you. Gill Monk

Part Two of “Collections Towards a History – Lyminge Park , by Duncan Harrison

(If you know of any errors or omissions – or can add anything, please let the Editor know.  Part 1 was in October’s issue)

After 1535 conveyances of land by one particular method, known as Bargain and Sale , had to be enrolled by one of the central courts of law, or with the locally-kept records of the Quarter sessions.  The most popular court for enrolment was that of the Court of Chancery and their indentures were records were enrolled on the back of the Chancery Close rolls.  So that we find on the fourth roll for the 2nd year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth ( 17 Nov 1559-16 Nov 1560) an entry for Dame Affrea Aucher granting to Edward Aucher “The manor and park and advowson of the church of Lyminge , Kent ”  [PRO: C54/569 item 27].  I haven’t consulted this, but it should contain full details of the land being transferred.  The advowson was the right of appointing the clergyman to the parish. The right of advowson is historically the survival of an originally much more extensive control exercised by the feudal lord over the churches on his estates.  This right for the parish of Lyminge is now vested in the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Affra or Aphra was the daughter of William Cornwallis and had married Sir Anthony Aucher of Ottringden, knight.[1] This is Otterden parish in Kent ; I was going to see what Hasted had to say about this family only to discover that the parish is only written up in the first edition of Hasted and was omitted from the 2nd edition.  Edward Aucher of Bourne Place , Bishopsbourne was Affra’s son.  His grandson Sir Anthony Aucher of Bishopsbourne (buried there 24 July 1637 ) with his wife Hester leased the Park and other lands for 21 years to Robert Rogers of Godmersham gentleman and Hamond Videan of Lyminge husbandman.[2]  The were leased, “All that park warren and grounds called or known by the name of Lymedge alias Lymindge Parke and also all and singular the lands grounds and soile and hereditaments whatsoever parcell and belonging to the said parke and warren called Lymedge alias Lymindge parke or esteemed or reputed parte parcell or member thereof ... in the parish of Lymedge alias Lymindge ... except all such woods woodland copices and grounds reserved for fellable woods.”  They had to pay £140 per annum at Bourne Place , Bishopsbourne and within 12 years they had to erect and built a stable to the mansion house on the premises and to enclose and fence the same park.

Thomas Philipott in 1659 [3] said that Sir Anthony Aucher of Bourne Place lately sold the manor to Sir John Roberts of Canterbury .  This presumably is the Sir Anthony Aucher (1614-1692) who was created a baronet.

William Lambard, writing in 1570 [4], lists forests and parks in Kent . Among those noted are Westenhanger and Postling but no mention of Lyminge.[5]  The first reference to park is in  Harris who tells us that “in the 21st year of Edward the first (1291/2) I find the Archbishop of Canterbury had a warren at this place; for one John son of Peter de Hardress was accused before the Justices Itinerant for hunting here.”

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards.  We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating.  So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again!  Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market.  Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
