THE LYMINGE NEWSLETTER

December 2000

Produced by

Community Matters

What a Wonderful Year!

Where has the year gone! But what a wonderful year! Lyminge certainly knows how to celebrate - there was something for everyone this year. It is difficult to pull out highlights, because inevitably they will be from a personal slant - but I will anyway! I thought the Millennium Eve celebrations were magical and it was great to see so many people during the procession. It was such a shame that the weather was so misty we could not see our Millennium Beacon. The weather was a complete contrast - a warm, balmy evening, when we processed around the village to see the Dramatic Society's Promenade Plays; with every emotion drawn from the audience; it was a unique occasion. The village hall resounded with laughter, music and song at the variety show in the autumn (what would we do without Mike Chisnell - a first-class Master of Ceremonies!).

……and we still haven't finished!…… Liz Coleman (Chairman, Millennium Committee)

Saturday 16 December - Children's Millennium Christmas Party (for those aged 2½ to 7) and Disco (for those aged 8 to 11)

By now, every child between the ages of 2½ and 11, who lives in the Parish, should have received an invitation for either of the above events, which are being organised by the Lyminge Millennium Committee as part of the programme of Millennium celebrations this year. If your child does not attend any of the playgroups or the school in the Parish and would like to come, please could you contact Liz Coleman (863197) as soon as possible.

Meditations for Advent (Church of England)

During Advent we are holding meditations in preparation for Christmas in Stanford and Lyminge. On Tuesday 5th and 12th December Rev. Gill Mack will be holding meditations in Stanford at 8.00pm. If you are interested, please ring for the venue on either 268523 or 862432. On Wednesday 6th, 13th and 20th, Roger Davenport will be holding meditations at Lanfranc in Lyminge at 3.00pm. On Tuesday 7th, 14th and 21st December, Rev. Peter Ashman will be holding meditations in the Parish Church, Lyminge at 8.00pm.

Christmas Morning, St. Mary and St. Ethelburga Church - Toys and Joy at 10.30am (no communion)

A short service for families and children of any age to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ - bring a favourite toy or present and be prepared to tell us about it and show how it works - with carols in between.

New Year's Eve (the real start of the New Millennium!)

  1. "2001, A Church Odyssey". Lyminge Churches Together invite all friends to join them in the School Hall at 11.00am for a service led by Rev. Peter Ashman and Terry Preston.

  2. We plan to bury a time capsule in land adjacent to the Lyminge Car Park, near to the Library. Everyone is welcome to join us at 8.30pm to witness this and then to process (with lanterns - get them out of the loft again!) to the Village Hall Car Park, where our Millennium Beacon will be lit again and there will be a short burst of fireworks to mark the end of the year. The celebration will be finished by about 9.30pm, so it will be ideal for all ages. Please look out for posters giving further details, or ring Liz Coleman on 863197.

Handbell Appeal - Almost There

The Lyminge Handbell Ringers can now confirm that thanks to the continuing interest in our appeal for donations we are now within reach of our target figure of £3500. This means that our bells will be completely refurbished. Rehearsals for the Christmas season began on the 12th of November and bookings are being taken for the festive season. We shall ring at the Crib service and the Midnight service and outside Haxtons on the 23rd of December. Should you have a special occasion or gathering, at which the sound of traditional handbells would be welcome, please give us a call as soon as possible and we will do our best to come along. A minimum donation of £40 would be appreciated for our attendance. Evenings and weekends only. Call Liz McNaughton (863983) or Ro Edmond (863201).

The money we raise will be used to bring a little happiness into the lives of those on their own, or who are less fortunate than ourselves this Christmas. Last year we raised over £2600 and were able to provide hampers, fuel vouchers, tins of sweets and biscuits and electricity stamps and cards for many local people. If you would like to help, or need any information, contact Richard Cowling on 840544.

Notices

Lyminge Primary School
Fund-raising Update

The School aims to raise sufficient funds to build a new block to house Early Years children and a new, larger staff room. At the same time improve-ments to the internal plan of the school are hoped to be made which will create a computer suite and enlarge the library.

Through various grants, the funds have been found for the new-build, so the fund-raising is now concentrating on the internal work. The Parents and Friends have committed to raising £20,000 and other sources are being sought to raise the further £21,000 which is required. The Parish Council have been approached to ask whether these funds could be found by a raise in the precept on the rates. We hope you have all had the opportunity to see the display in Lyminge Library which shows the proposed plans.

Lyminge Youth Dramatic Society

SORRY! SORRY! SORRY! Due to increasing demands on the leaders time this term, we have had to close the Club meetings for the rest of term. Both Cheryl and Gill are involved with "Wind in the Willows" and we would have had to close early because the Hall is to be used for other events. We were glad to see many new faces as well as our regular members and do hope that you will return in January. We will put the date in the next Newsletter, so watch this space and in the meantime we hope you all enjoy "Wind in the Willows" and have a good Christmas.

Meriden Park, Etchinghill

"I do hope the youths who felt it appropriate and necessary to throw flour into the porches of residents' homes, over their front-doors, flowers, drives, and cars on Halloween night, feel completely elated and satisfied on their destructive achievements. I am sure they are unaware of the difficulty in removing solidified flour from the car trims, window rubbers, below the grill of the bonnet and molecules left in a black soft-top roof.

"It appears parents of those youths have no idea of the distress and suffering their children are causing local residents when they allow them out on Halloween. I do hope when these children own their own homes and cars, they too will not appreciate such stupid pranks."

Reports

Royal British Legion - Elham Valley Branch
2000 Poppy Appeal

We have done it again! An extra £354 in the box collection, which was partly achieved by the sum of £201 being collected in Etchinghill. Many thanks to Mrs. Hogarth, Mrs. Peel, Mrs, Holt and Mr. Huggins who responded to my plea for collectors.

A big "Thank You" to all the collectors who braved the most atrocious weather conditions to achieve in the last ten years, the highest box collection of £2,196. Also to the business community and the schools for their contributions. The total amount donated amounts to £3,000, which includes box collections, donations, the Church collection, wreaths and the Branch donation. In addition, the proceeds from the Summer lunch and tombola stall held at the Elham Flower Festival have already been sent to the Legion's Poppy Appeal.

As John and I are leaving the Valley, this is my last year as Poppy Appeal organiser. I am pleased to advise that Mrs. Helen Lipton, assisted by Mrs. Dorothy Edgeley, have agreed to co-ordinated the Appeal in future.

On behalf of the Elham Valley Branch, thank you very much for your magnificent support.

Finally, on a personal note, I wish to thank everyone for their co-operation and friendship over the years and for making my task easier.

Yours sincerely, Pat Neumark, Hon. Poppy Organiser.

Etchinghill Residents' Association

The Association held its AGM on Friday 10th November at Etchinghill Village Hall. A new Committee was elected with Wendy Preston standing as Chairman, Barbara Collins-Newing, as Secretary, and Judith Lansdell, as Treasurer. The retiring Committee was thanked for their support and hard work. Three new members were also co-opted onto the new Committee.

A review of the past year's events was held with a great deal of interest being shown in the Toad Watch that had been organised during February and March, the Barbecue during the summer and a number of events in conjunction with the Millennium Committee. The meeting was very well supported by local residents, who raised a number of issues concerning the village, namely the Lyminge School rate precept, tree, planting, speeding within the village, planning applications for a Motor Cycle Training School, vandalism and safety risks in the Meriden Park area, which are being explored. It was hoped to organise a number of social events within the area to enable new residents to feel welcome in the community. A "Thank You" was extended to all that made donations to the Association.

The annual subscription of £1.00 per household is now due, and anyone wishing to pay this should contact Judith Lansdell on 862498. Anyone wishing to raise any local issues at the next Committee meeting should contact Barbara Collins-Newing on 862873.

Sabre Conservatories, Windows and Doors
We manufacture beautiful double-glazed PVC-u units in our own factory to exacting standards. We can also boast of being only one of five companies in the UK manufacturing the fantastic slim-line Marshall Tufflex system Vertical Sliding Sash Window, which caries a severe weather rating. So, if you have old box sash style windows and believe PVC-u would look out of place, think again! Maintenance free, sealed units, spring loaded balances, slim-line appearance and decorative 'horns' make our Vertical Slider one of the best on the market. Remember, we are suppliers to the trade both in the UK and Europe - they know a good window when they see one!
