Lyminge Association News
1. The Annual General Meeting
The Speaker at the Annual General Meeting will be Peter Eustace, the Site
Co-ordinator of Sibton Park Development (Holiday Property Bond Management
Ltd.). The meeting will be held on Wednesday 29 September at the Village
Hall, starting at 7.30pm. There will only be a short amount of business
before the talk. HPB started to convert the house into 13 apartments
create 28 cottages in the ground at the end of last October and
Bondholders should be able to start holidaying at Sibton park in January
2000. Leisure facilities planned on the site include the existing swimming
pool, tennis courts, a grass bowling green and a pitch and putt course.
This will be your opportunity to gain advance information and to quiz Mr.
Eustace on any points of concern. Refreshments will be served.
2. Bulb Planting
The Lyminge Association is masterminding a bulb-planting day on Saturday
11 September. If we plant bulbs then, they will flower for the first time
in the Millennium year. We have allocated a number of sites around the
Parish, which we think would be brightened by daffodils and narcissi, and
are currently seeking the permission of the landowners to do this. We have
the promise of a very generous donation of bulbs to start us off, and the
Parents and Friends of Lyminge School have kindly agreed to purchase some
(we very much hope that the children who help plant the bulbs will
remember this Millennium effort), but we would be very glad of donations!
If you happen to see "buy one get one free" or similar offers in
the next month or so, please bear the Parish in mind! Please give Liz
Coleman a ring on 863197 if you can help - and watch this space for more
details next month!
3. Local Clubs, Societies and Associations
An updated list of local Clubs, Societies and Associations should now be
in the Library. The Association is very grateful to Mike Foxon for all the
work he has put into this - it has been a mammoth task - and you can be
sure that it will be out of date already! Please let Mike have all the
corrections and up-dates, and particularly, when your club's committee
changes. Mike can be contacted on 862073.
Parish Council News
1. Road Junctions
The Parish Council is increasingly concerned about the parking of vehicles
close to road junctions. The vehicles obscure the sight-lines of motorists
entering and leaving the junctions. Vehicles should be parked well away
and off the road if possible. The Police are aware of particular
black-spots, but all we ask is for common sense to be used. The same
applies to vegetation which overhangs pavements and roads.
2. The Parish Hedgerow Survey
Work has started on the Hedgerow Survey, but more volunteers would be
appreciated! For more information, please contact Patsy Philip on 862983.
Thoroughly Wood's thoroughly destroyed!
Monday 28 June is not a date Lyminge is likely to forget in a hurry!
Never had we seen so many fire appliances in the village at any one time.
The fire started at 11 o'clock when a fluorescent light tube exploded in
the paint shop and the resultant fire spread quickly into the roof space.
Everyone (including a gerbil) evacuated quickly, but leaving personal
effects including tools and car and house keys in the building.
Fortunately the file containing details of work in hand and future
orders was also rescued - but nothing else. The only thing that remains of
the Lyminge Thoroughly Wood is a sign, which has now been erected on the
bulldozed site, which had been used previously at Etchinghill Golf Club,
where the firm had sponsored a hole in a recent match!
It is to the great credit of the Fire Brigade that damage to
neighbouring property was minimised - and it was fortunate for some
(including your Editor's family!) that the wind was a westerly that day.
Concerns have been raised that the Brigade had difficulty in locating fire
hydrants, and indeed it was a matter discussed at the Parish Council
meeting that night.
We understand that the Water Board and the Fire Brigade have been
working together to locate all the local points. If there is a hydrant
near your house, perhaps you should "adopt" it - keeping an eye
on it to check for damage and to ensure it is kept clear of vegetation.
Fire Hydrants are the ultimate responsibility of the Fire Brigade.
A Trust Fund has been established for all those who may wish to
contribute to the replacement of the tools owned personally by Thoroughly
Wood's young staff members, which were not covered by the firm's
insurance. Contributions can be received by most of the shops in the
village. Any surplus to the funds will be given to the Lyminge Millennium
fund.
Temporary premises for Thoroughly Wood have been found at Unit 5,
Martello Industrial Estate, Neason Way, Off Foreland Avenue, Folkestone.
Telephone 251900. Mark Linham ("the boss"), wishes to convey his
sincere thanks to all the local people for all their concern and good
wishes and he apologies for the damage which has been caused. The firm
hopes to be back as soon as possible, in specially designed, thoroughly
suitable, premises.
Letter to the Editor
The authors of the following letter (dated 12.07.99.) wish to remain
anonymous. Readers are reminded that publication of any letter does not
necessarily mean that the views expressed are those of the Editor or the
Lyminge Association. Letters to the Editor (which should be less than 200
words) are welcome on topics of local interest and rights of reply are
given.
"Many of you are already aware that outline planning is being
sought for a house and garage to the rear of Normandy, 19 Station Road,
Lyminge with its access onto Nash Hill. What is not generally known is
that the existing property and land is also for sale and that the deal is
to include Planning permission within its grounds.
"We have good reason to believe that negotiations are in hand
between the owners and a proposed purchaser with a view to further
developments of a business nature.
"Notification has been received today from the local Planning
Authority, which states that even ahead of the hearing outline planning
will probably be granted despite the numerous objections.
"The paring problems caused by excessive office development in
this locality can only be exacerbated if in fact this goes ahead. The
Planning Department informs us that car parking on this site would be
severely restricted and so would not provide the solution to any future
parking problems caused.
"Has there not been enough infilling and office development in
this village already? No account has been taken to date of the concerns of
the residents on Nash Hill, or of the considerable dangers to our senior
citizens and children who use the Greenbanks walkway and hill en rout to
the shops and local school. How will the Emergency Services reach anyone
in need whilst construction is in progress?
"If common sense is to prevail before the heart is completely
ripped out of this village or another even more tragic incident as
recently occurred in North Lyminge happens again, we all need to say NO to
this now!"
"Start by writing to our local parish council and ask them to
support the village community this time before it is once more too
late."
Editor's Postscript: The Parish Council discussed this matter at
their meeting of Monday 28 June, the minutes of which are displayed on the
notice board near the Post Office.

Lyminge Football
Well, the Season is only about 6 to 7 weeks away! The training is a bit
slow at the moment, as many of our players are still heavily involved with
Cricket!!! Paul McLeary (alias Macca) is to be this season's manager, so
hopefully the team will be run and organised even better this season. We
have arranged the following friendlies this August:
1st v. Magpies (Div 1)
8th v. Harveys (Div 2)
15th v. Arcadia (Div 2)
22nd v. Harveys.

odd blankets - a bit beyond my life span I guess! But I'll be doing my
best. Daphne Wrathall.

Our meeting on the 13th of July was our Horticultural Show. First we

Shilton, Mrs Childs, Mrs. Lofty and Mrs. Hughes.

The outing to Paddock Wood went well and the weather was good. On 7th
July a coach party of 52 friends and members enjoyed an afternoon drive

Ship at Pegwell Bay. A lovely cream tea awaited us at Oak Tree Tea Rooms.
On 14th July Liz Coleman came to the Club and explain plans of future

Elham Valley Twinning Association
Andrée Sladden stepped down as chairman of the Twinning Association at
the recent AGM. Yvonne Parry, the new Chairman, outlined plans for the
future, which include the construction of a 'petanque terraine' (boules
court) on the village green at Elham on one of the old grass tennis
courts. New members are always welcome - and you DO NOT NEED TO SPEAK
FRENCH to join in - a willingness to be friendly and welcoming will give
you a very good start! For further information contact the Lyminge
representative, Colin Auld (862607), or the Membership Secretary, Betty
Doy (840320).
Gardening Hints for August
Vine Weevil eggs hatch during August and September, so now is the time
to apply a biological control. Take cuttings of tender perennials. Cut
back hardy geraniums and alchemillas to encourage new growth. Trim back
young growth on pyracanthus to give a good winder display of berries. Trim
leylandii hedges. Reducing the height by a third will do no harm and
should also please the neighbours.
Congratulations!
Many congratulations to Mr. D. Godden, who represented Lyminge in the
Federation of Horticultural Societies at the Kent Show at Detling in July.
Despite the fact that he did not enter as many classes as usual (being a
Judge for most of the Floral Entries), he gained a total of 12 points.
