August 1998

Community Matters

Community Policing
During August road checks will be particularly aimed at non-users of seat belts - don't forget to strap in your children. Previous road checks have resulted in drivers going to court for a variety of offences. Complaints have been received about speeding motorists in Brady Road. In the built-up area it is a 30mph limit and those caught at speeds in excess of 30mph will receive a Fixed Penalty Ticket. Neighbourhood Watch week was in June and if you are not in a scheme, but are willing to set one up for your road, please 'phone me on 01303 289176 or the NHW office at Deal, telephone 01304 218151. Pc 6272 Richard Lester.

The Basketball Court
The Court is now ready for play! Thank you to everyone for their tolerance while the surface was "going off" and being marked up. The basketball nets should have been erected on 28 July. For details about practice nights, please contact Shi Topaz on 862261.

A Plea From All Animal Owners.
If you intend letting off some fireworks to celebrate some auspicious event (e.g. American Independence Day), we would be very grateful if a note to that effect is put in the Newsletter prior to the event so that we can ensure all our pets are indoors (and sedated if necessary).

The Ethelburga Well Celebrations
Plans for the celebrations continue apace and "Wish" pennants are beginning to be handed in. Please ensure your club or society's pennant is completed as soon as possible. "Offcumduns", have been booked to perform Morris Dancing and Music from 11.30am to 12 noon and again at 2.00pm to 2.30pm. The Parents and Friends of Lyminge School will be having an apple stall - apple dunking and bobbing and apple pies. There will be other entertainments as well as the blessing of the well, which will be dressed in magnificent finery! More details will be given in the next Newsletter.

Be Nice to Strangers!!
Lyminge is still being reviewed for the "Kent Best Village" competition ("Best" not "Most Beautiful"!), so you may see people around the place with thoughtful expressions and clip-boards! We will know our fate at the end of September.

This month's Newsletter has been kindly sponsored by:

Library News

Thank you to Jean Brown for the exhibition of her beautifully worked embroidery pictures at the end of June. They were greatly admired and marvelled at by all those who saw them. The exhibition by Helen Burr also caused much comment and some very lively debate. During August pictures in oil and water-colour by mother and son artists, Yvette and John Grandfield will be on display.

From July 26th until October the Education and Libraries department of KCC is running a competition for children, when they can become book critics and write a short review on each of four books they have read. Forms will be available at Lyminge and other libraries in Kent. The Grand Prize is a term's free tuition at the Stage Coach Theatre Art in Canterbury.

Come along to your local library - it's all happening there!

Reports

Age Concern, Elham Rural
Our grateful thanks to all those who helped by collecting for Alexander Rose Day and a big thank you to everyone who responded so generously to our appeal. The results of the collection were:
Lyminge -£356.89
Etchinghill- £44.17
Postling- £55.01
The overall sum raised this year was £884.48, which is £82.54 up from the last year.
I should also like to thank Joan Catford, her helpers and the people of Rhodes Minnis, for supporting the Garden Party Joan held on 8th June. The sum raised was £201.00, a splendid effort.
Sheila Woods.

Sibton Park Cricket Club
The inclement weather of late June and early July has not been kind to our outdoor 'summer' game. However, our teenage batsmen, notably Martin Wren (85 and 44 runs), Terry Dunham (51 runs) and Stuart Murrell (55 runs) have impressed in both Midweek friendly games and Woolwich Kent League games. Paul McLeary (56 runs) has ably supported them, but only Colts; Manager, Nigel Arnold (6 for 20) has had success when bowling against Elham.

In the Godden Cup Final we lost rather heavily to Folkestone CC, but lessons will have been absorbed for success in the future.

Our Matchball Sponsors for July were Six-Mile Excavators, Lyminge Dental Surgery and Gill's Hardware. We thank them for their support.

100 Club winners for July were; £25, L. Bloomfield; £10, A.G. Kirk; £5, Mrs. L. Woods.

For bookings contact Bob Williams (863170) and for cricket information contact Peter McKen (Secretary) on 862697.

Lyminge W.I.
Our Horticultural Show went off very well. Our thanks to Mrs. Joyce for judging it. The winners were: Preserves, Mrs. Hodson; Cookery, Mrs Harris; Garden Produce, Mrs. Jordon; Flowers, Mrs. Jordon; Handicraft, joint winners Mrs. Norton and Mrs. Harris. While the judging was going on Mrs. Norton read a true story about Sweet Peas.

Senior Citizens' Club
The Senior Citizens' Club had a most enjoyable afternoon in June, when Mercy Foster tested our brains with her quizzes and competitions. We also had some very nice cakes for tea supplied by Hayward's Bakery. In July we are looking forward to having a talk given by our local bobby.
D. Longley.

W.W.A.M. (World Wide Advent Mission)
Once again, members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Folkestone, wish to thank everyone in Etchinghill, Lyminge, Elham and surrounding district for their generosity during our annual house-to-house collection for 'World Wide Advent Missions', which took place for two weeks in April. Leaflets were handed to everyone explaining the very worthy causes to which the money is distributed each year.

The final total collected from Folkestone Church members was £961, against £670 in 1997. Residents of Folkestone and Hythe district also contributed. The final total collected for the South East Conference of Seventh Day Adventists is £280,000. May God bless those who gave and those unable to give.

Lyminge Village Hall

Lyminge Day finally broke the mould! It didn't rain (well not much) and the sun shone! Villagers and visitors enjoyed an entertaining afternoon, mediaeval-style. "Cut and Thrust" put on a demonstration of knights in armour battling for glory and musketeers duelling for honour and also showed a captivated audience how their protective gear was worn and described the various weapons they used.

All this noise and commotion did not distract Duchess, fine pedigree cow, who had more important matters on her mind. A large grid was marked out in a fenced corner of Jubilee field and at an appointed hour Duchess was ushered into the area - and then nature took a hand. The person who had "bought" the square where Duchess left her mark, was the winner of £50.00! Congratulations Mr. Taylor! Congratulations also to the Rev. Frank Kent and to the Gredley Family who share the prize for correctly guessing Duchess' weight (750kg).

Other attractions included archery, china smashing, darts, skittles penalty shoot-out, hoopla, pony rides, tombola, raffle crafts and bric-a-brac and local traders' stands. All the catering "outlets" did a roaring trade - and Christopher Willcox's candyfloss was a sight to behold! The best view of the village was definitely from the church tower, which was also open for the day

The evening's barn dance and line dance was well attended and young and old alike danced until they nearly dropped! The very versatile Big Ian Petrie Band provided the music.

Lyminge Day made in the region of £1,000, which will be used to help finance the proposed kitchen extension and improved storage facilities and the Village Hall Committee would like to thank everyone for coming and particularly all the "workers" who helped make this such a successful day.

The sun shone on the Gardening Society members as they strolled around the allotments and Bert Fagg's vegetable garden, sympathising with the potato crop spoiled with blight and admiring the healthy look of other crops. Thank you to Bert and Peter and also Jill for the coffee and biscuits.

Garden Tips for August
With our unusual weather pattern many flowering plants are trying to (or are) set seed early. To keep plants flowering, 'dead head' them regularly, that is, take dead/dying blooms. The same conditions make for more slugs and snails, greenfly, whitefly and brown spot on roses. Spray to control pests. If you don't like chemicals, use soapy water, from domestic (not toilet) soap.

Nature's Weather Signs, a note from Mr Godden
I discovered the following Natural Weather Signs in Johnson's Dictionary of Gardening published in the USA in 1875. Having followed them it is surprising just how accurate they can be. The signs can be adapted to your location and environment, e.g. if you do not have a waterfall handy, the sound of trains/traffic will do the job just as well.
RAIN MAY BE EXPECTED WHEN:

  • The sounds of distant waterfalls are distinctly heard
  • When the sun rises pale and sparkling
  • When the sun rises amid ruddy clouds
  • When the sun sets behind a dark cloud
  • When there is no dew after heat in the summer
  • When there is much more frost in the winter
  • When mist rests on the mountain tops
  • When snails and frogs beset your evening walks
  • When gnats bite vigorously
  • When animals are unusually restless

FAIR WEATHER MAY BE EXPECTED WHEN:
  • None of the signs of rain just given occur
  • The sun sets red and cloudless
  • The moon's horns are sharp
  • The stars shine brightly
  • The smoke rises easily
  • Moths and beetles appear in numbers
